They do. We have quite a few people that use that style for water heaters.

As for producing electricity? Nah, it doesn't scale down well. Great when you have acres and acres of land in the desert, shit when you only have a rooftop. A rooftops worth of mirrors and pipes plus the equipment needed to turn the heat into power costs A LOT more than a grid tie photovoltaic systems anyway. It is also ugly as shit and produces less power when it is cloudy.

That's incorrect. Even in terribly unsunny places you can use solar pretty well. It just happens to be "better" in very sunny locations. Don't misunderstand that something "better" means "the only place you should ever do it", because that is wrong.

>>1165802
It is already done and being done more and more. Though, there's more single use for Stirling engines that use dishes now than actual steam engines.

Need some ideas for an automated ground coffee dispenser wich dispenses exact amount each time. I have SG-90 servos and a 3d printer at my disposal. Already tried archimedes' screw but the servo wasnt strong enough to spin the screw.

make a wheel divided into 4 quadrants
each is the volume of coffee you need
make 2 opposite sides closed
your hopper is the same size as the opening on the wheel and pressed directly on the wheel
servo turns wheel 180deg at a time, dumping & filling with each half

Black candle smoke.

But that depends on why you need dykem. Fitting parts traditionally used smoke or inletting black/blue

I actually do that when I'm working on my old shotguns but I use Dykem for fabricating. I coat the work and scribe on top of the Dykem.

The problem is the potential for asbestos. If it's not asbestos you can DIY pretty easily, if it is asbestos then it's worth it to just pay someone to do it for you and then they can worry about their lungs instead of you worrying about yours.

I was wondering how difficult it is to change a 2 prong outlet to a 3 prong outlet? I would only be doing this to one outlet, which happens to be directly above the main breaker box in my basement. Any useful advice would be appreciated
53 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Fairly easy. You won't have a ground feeding back to your service panel, but you can ground the outlet to the fixture.

Turn breaker off. Make sure to test that it's off, either with a multimeter or an appliance.

Swap the outlets. There's a gauge on the back of the outlet to measure how far to strip the wires. Make sure to get this right as you don't want exposed wires, or the polymer coating inside the connector.

Run electrical tape around the back end of the outlet to minimize shorting.

Flip breaker back on and test.

I'm guessing you're in north america, but some 1984 places like Australia require an electrician to do this.
>>
>>1173667
Also, the black wire is going to be your line voltage, white is going to be the common. The outlet will indicate which wire goes where.
>>
>>1173662
Changing an outlet? Easy as shit. Getting a ground to an outlet that doesn't have one? Possible nightmare.

You might be lucky though. There was a period before grounded outlets were commonplace that they would still ground the metal box the outlet is placed in. If the box is grounded then it is easy. Just run a ground wire from the box to the ground screw on the new outlet.

No ground in the box? Put a GFCI outlet in there instead and then label it as having no ground. In my opinion, a GFCI that is missing a ground is still safer than a standard outlet with a ground. I am no electrician, though.

For my power distribution system I'm just going to splice together 6 high gauge wires and then melt about 100grams of solder onto it such that it becomes a big heavy duty joint. Will this work well?

it will work yeas but since you need 5V for your FC you would need to add a bec why not take a PDB with a dual BEC integrated? will be cheaper better and cleaner... also you probably have a power filter on it which is better for your FC especially if you plan on using active breaking or even 3D mode..
besides its an ugly mess.

I want to get some 240v things for my shop. My compressor and air conditioner are currently 120 and I want to get new ones. My AC is on dedicated circuit on this panel, my compressor shares a breaker with some other outlets. Do I even have room to add the required breakers to do this? Why do slots 6 and 7 look the way they do?
25 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1176915
Each slot alternates which phase it's using so you have two left on one phase and one left on the other, so you should have enough space.
Check the motor plate of your compressor, you might be able to just change the wires to 240v
>>
>>1176915
Usually sub panels like that don't allow you to use the first and last space, I can see your last space has no bus bar. Why this is I don't know. Looks like your second to last space is that way to prevent two pole breakers but don't alright that as gospel. Just an educated guess. Looks like a 100 amp sub and I'd say you could move some things around to make space but your right at Max capacity if you want to avoid tying circuits together to add your two pole shit.

Couldnt find the answer online for this. We just ordered internet and are doing the self install thing but none of my three wall coax cables are working. I can find the splitter in the wall and connecting to the main one also doesnt work. I havent gone up into the attic to check yet if theres something up there. I went outside and all I see are three connections on the ground that look like this. Is that normal or is that some type of lock. I dont wanna end up calling a tech if its just a matter of connecting a single cable somewhere. Any ideas?

What weird planet do you live on where service providers allow unqualified, unlicensed plebs like yourself tack whatever the fuck they want onto their network under the guise of a self install?
>>
>>1176726

Usually the self install is hooking up the cable box for the tv and the modem for internet. Should only take about 2 minites If all the connections are good.

Drill a hole through the center
>>
>>1176626
if you drill, drill right below the top of the key slot, so the pins dont bind on the metal scraps. if you need to pick it, you need tools or a spare key that fits in there. if you can buy a key, file it into a zigzag pattern, then push in and out while turning slightly until it pops open. also, you could do the same thing, but get a hammer and tap the key while turning it. if you make a picking set, well trial by fire, and look up bosian bill on youtube after you have made a lock picking set.... this being said, you will probably fail a lot, its not like skyrim and it requires muscle memory and more than a /diy/ post on a korean square dancing website.

I have a built in speaker system in my new home. How would I get this to work?

You should not use a Rotary tumbler like in your photo. You need to use a Vibrating tumbler instead. The Rotary tumblers deform the objects you want to polish. That is why all the pros use Vibrating tumblers for everything. The medium you should use is, "walnut shell." You can also use hardwood medium.

Some people just use acetone without a tumbler for ABS, but results vary greatly.

Thank you for your kind answer. The thing is I already tried it with a vibrating tumbler and walnut shell because I read that on the internet. The only result after days of tumbling was my neighbors complaining about the noise. Thats why I want to use a rotary tumbler. I know its worse but at least its calm. I just need to know what medium I should use now after walnut shell didnt work so good.

Purchase amylase enzyme and lots of potatoes. Wash and cook and mash potatoes (no skinning). Let potatoes cool to ~150f and add enough strike water to match your target volume plus ~10%. Maintain 150f for 1 hour, then strain off your sugary product and ferment for 2 weeks.

Instead of amylase enzyme, you can also just add mashed potatoes to some malted barley and follow the same basic procedure.

The important thing is the starch conversion. You'll get a lousy fermentation if you skin the potatoes or have very soft water, but you can always add some yeast nutrient to counteract that. Distiller's yeast works best, since you want as little left of the original feedstock as possible.

If cheap bad tasting alcohol is your goal, sugar wine is better. Otherwise go lurk a brewing forum and learn the craft I'm afraid.

My local metal yard sells bars in 20 feet lengths, but will cut in half for free.

What's the best way to secure 600-800 pounds of 10' stock in the back of my 6 foot bed? I usually buy 40-60 feet and rest it on the gate, but i'd be worried about transporting any real weight on it.

Tailgate alone can support 600-800 pounds (think of 2 fat rednecks sitting on a tailgate at a football game).

I sold a big item on eBay and I built a sturdy wooden crate for it. The buyer is American and I'm from Europe.

There's a big problem. As I was hiring DHL to ship it to the US they told me I can only use ISPN-15 approved wood when making a crate. I simply used whatever shitty planks and plywood I could find lying around.
There's no way I can prove the wood complies with the regulations and there's also no way I'll dismantle the crate I built for 3 weeks and just cancel the sale.

What to do? I simply have no idea, this is the first time I've ever encountered such a problem. What the fuck, I have to buy "licensed" wood just for a fucking box that's destroyed anyway? The buyer is not paying me extra for the crate, since the shipping itself is like a thousand bucks.

I'm running into technicalities regarding welding aluminum.

I plan to build a live aboard sailboat and I'm considering aluminum.

Problem is, welding aluminum halves it's strength because aluminum is so heat conductive that you anneal it as you weld it.

Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?

I heard about how one yacht producer poured molten lead into aluminum keels without destroying the aluminum on boatdesign.net, they sprayed the keel with a fine mist of cold water throughout the slow pouring.

Would that work?

Or is it a good thing it loses half its strength?

This is an aluminum sailboat after collision.

Does the annealing make it more malleable and less likely to crack and fail?
>>
Why not do it the old fashioned way and rivet it?

Why does a boat even need hardened?
>>
>>1175645
>I plan to build a live aboard sailboat and I'm considering aluminum.

why?

if the answer to this is that you just have to much money and dime that this seems like a good idea then OK. But really you will be able to buy a boat for a 10th of the cost it will take to do this and all the kinks will have been worked out along time ago, well before you show up.

assuming because you are asking 4chan you are a first time boat builder, building a small plywood glassover skiff is probably more your speed.
Also if you plan on salt water that aluminum will corrode like fuck if it as much as looks at iron/steel tools,
