I think this belongs here and not on /k/, by the I could be mistaken. I am wanting to make an alcohol powered mortar to fire a saltpeter base smokebomb. Do you think a simple denatured alcohol propellant would be enough to push a 15-20 gram projectile decently far?

Depends on your idea of "decently far", but considering similar things have been used to launch potatoes, probably.

I'm sure I could try gasoline, it might be a little extreme for what I need, I'll try in a couple days and see how it goes

I desperately need some ideas. I have a stupid tiny laser and I'm trying to engrave some cups. The problem I'm having is that the 'lathe chuck" is too small for them. To fix this, I can use the outside of the jaws to grip the cup, but I don't know how I can align it so the cup doesnt wobble and is aligned correctly. Any ideas?

Post the other end of the fucking cup.
>>
>>1178443
Make a sabot like fixture that is indexable and repeatable.

Something that clamps around the cup, buy has a tail that will fit your chuck
>>
>>1178444
Thank you sir. I just left my shop to grab food and beer. Really stressed out right now. On the other end is the bottom of the cup. Too small of a space to use a centering cone thing so I had to take that off. My only option is using the chuck jaws to push on the inside of the open part of the cup.

I bought a traffic sign in Aruba identical to the one in pic related. However, it was wrapped in saran wrap to protect it when I picked it up from the company so it wouldn't get scratched on the flight home. I took the plastic wrap off and mounted it on my wall, but it still has some plastic wrap residue left over on it.

tl;dr: Will I ruin a traffic sign if I clean it with contractors' solvent?

let me get my crystal ball out...
wtf is contractors solvent? contractor of what exactly?
what is the sign made out of?
why can't you peel off the wrap off? was the paint still wet when the wrap was applied?

is the edge double folded? try some solvent on the back where you won't see it fuck up. rub it the same as you would rub the wrap off when you are testing it too.

>wtf is contractors solvent? contractor of what exactly?
Pic related. It's a degreaser that claims to be safe for nearly anything and one of its primary ingredients is orange oil.
>what is the sign made out of?
It's made out of a metal base with a highly reflective piece of material stuck on the front where the sign portion is. I'm not sure what the main sign part is, but it feels kind of like plastic-coated metal.
>why can't you peel off the wrap off? was the paint still wet when the wrap was applied?
I peeled the wrap off just fine, but there is still a notable film of residue left.

Signs are designed to weather outdoor temperature and ran abuse I dont think some light solvent will hurt it

Tiny(ish) House
House is 8x6 meters, anybody have any advice on things that I should change? Any rough estimate on the cost for building (excluding the cost of any furniture or appliances, just framing, flooring, electric, plumbing, etc)? Is this do-able by a single person with a moderate level of experience with building if I just get people to come in to check my wiring and plumbing?

The door to the bathroom shouldn't go through the laundry area. I'd turn the bed 90 degrees, with wall to wall cupboard on each side...
>>
>>1178402
I put the bathroom through the laundry room (I considered reversing them, but want to keep the bathroom away from the kitchen, even if I will use the bathroom more than the laundry room/ pantry) in order to save some space so I don't need a hallway with the doors. I also considered having the door to the bathroom be through my bedroom, but I don't want people having to go into my bedroom to get to the bathroom. As for the bed, I think I'm going to put it flush up against the windows as that's how my current room is set up.
Are you saying I should have wall to wall cupboards in my bedroom or in the kitchen?

To estimate how many 2x4s I need for a shelving project could I add up the lengths of what I have planned then divide since the only variable is it's length?

I need some help /diy/

There is a street musician that plays across the street form my apartment.

He plays for hours on end and it's not even a real instrument, he just bangs on fucking buckets.

Lots of people have complained but he keeps coming back, cops won't do anything, I've thrown his sticks in the sewer before and he just comes back.

So I have a plan. Next to where he plays is a metal pole. I want to attach a device similar to pick related that I can fill with stink bomb juice and activate with a remote.

I feel like this is something I can rig up with stuff from radio shack. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Collect a few signatures and show up at your mayor. As soon as he sees that many people have this problem he will have to act, otherwise you can write a report to your local newspaper and that would damage his rep.

Can't you threaten to sue him btw, i doubt he has officially rented that spot?

I would make a secret shipping container bunker to secretly work on a shipping container boring machine to bore a tunnel with shipping container walls which would be welded and depressurized to allow a shipping container capsule to travel hundreds of miles per hour out of the island to an underwater shipping container base with a fleet of shipping container submarines which would transport me to my shipping container floating fortress/rocket pad from which I would take off with my shipping container rocket into orbit to avoid detection or interception and then plan my descent with my shipping container capsule into American soil.

Nobody will ever suspect anything, except maybe for the stream of shipping containers going into my property.

Is it just laser engraved, or is it actually engraved with some depth? If it's laser engraved, you could probably just use electrolysis (super easy, Google it, use a wet sponge on it). If it's got depth, don't.

I mean, assuming there's a good reason not to just lightly sand it.

So a cherry tree in the vicinity of my house broke apart this morning due to internal rotting, heavy fruiting, and a rainy not very dry week.

Spent several hours collecting near-ripe cherries for jam, and then spent a lot longer sawing a large piece of trunk to haul off before the local council starts breaking it down and mulching the lot to clear away. (The saw I borrowed from a neighbour and had to give back afterwards..)

So I have a 10ft long, 15inch wide 200lb log sitting at home, and I have neither the tools to really *do* anything with it.

I was thinking of making cheese-boards, just simple diagonal cuts, but that seems a little boring. Planks would be nice to make a shelf, but hard to do because it is still wet (meaning planks would warp after cutting), and I have no circular saw or modern sawtable to create accurate pieces.

Some extremely basic tools and ideas guys. My budget is $50.
>Also the log is basically sitting in a non-obstructive, but not secure place near the street. Anyone could make off with it, so my time is *kind* of limited.

>I have no circular saw or modern sawtable to create accurate pieces.

i'd just sell it, check what the going price for a cherry log is approx and put it up for 3/4 of that, first to offer 1/2 gets it
>>
>>1177827
The tree *technically* belongs to the local council, I simply made off with a piece of it before they could assume disposal duty of it, so selling something I acquired in possible questionable circumstances doesn't sit right with me.

I wouldn't know where to start, desu, craigslist isn't very active in my town and it could be weeks before an offer came along. I'd really rather just turn the wood into something useful.

$50 could get an okay saw I suppose. Not the best, but functional.
>>
>>1177825
Maybe have a crack at carving wooden spoons, salad servers and other stuff out of it?
Cherry is a very nice timber for that and you can carve it wet I think

"It is intended to be a shelter of extremes, open or closed. In order to feel cold, you have to feel hot; in order to feel safe, you have to feel at risk. Contrast is the true measure of a complete experience.."
so there, yi cunt. Its actually well-architected solution to the spec - site is windy af, they wanted open to nature, but easy to secure when not there, etc. 'richperson thing' - sure, but, the ideas maybe adaptable for a garden workshop or something, that opens maybe 1/2 sides, its legit. Hey guys.
I have this cheap second-hand led tv : Waltham WLHD32D17B. It was working alright for several months but today it broke down.
The red led lights up and then blinks when I'm trying to switch the tv on. But after a few blinks, the screen is still black and there's no sound.

So I opened the thing but no component seems damaged though I didn't look at the at welds on the back of the circuit boards yet.

How can I know what's up with this tv and repair it myself ? I don't really have any electronic equipment like a multimeter or a soldering iron but I could buy the stuff if it's not expensive.
11 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
The blinking light is usually an error code. Try to find the error codes for Waltham TVs and it'll lead you in the right direction. If the TV is more than a two-three years old, it's unlikely you'll find spare parts except from a donor TV. If the error code indicates a failed screen, it's not worth trying to fix, as panels often cost as much, or more than the cost of replacing the TV itself.
>>
>>1177663
Alright thanks I'll look into this.
>>
>>1177650

I would recommend buying a simple multimeter with AC and DC voltmeter settings, as well as a ohmmeter setting.

I would start by looking at the yellow board on the right in the picture. I would check capacitors on the board to see if they hold voltage when power is supplied. Also for the electrolytic ones, I would check resistance. Remember polarity for these kind of caps. Red to +, black to -. If the resistance isn't increasing slowly, especially for the electrolytic caps, I would replace the cap.

I had a similar problem with my LED TV recently. If I'm right here your tv isn't leaving its standby voltage due to a component failure on the power board. Luckily, this kind of problem is an easier one to fix.

If you can find a model number or serial number on the power board, then you can find a schematic for it. Now I'm thinking your specific component that failed might be a polypropylene film capacitor at the top center of the board. It's one of the blueish-gray rectangular components next to what appears to be a transformer of some sort (coil of wire that is exposed). I would go ahead and disconnect the power from the board and let these caps discharge for awhile before you do anything though. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MEASURE/IDENTIFY circuit problems with power connected. Especially with problems specific to the power board. If you have to measure potential (voltage) across any capacitor, LET THE POWER CHARGE THE CAP AND THEN DISCONNECT POWER CABLE QUICKLY.

I'll see if I can find any schematic for this board. Godspeed fellow /diy/ brother.

Concrete sink diy question

Instead of making a mold and all that I was thinking of using the left over tiles and build a sink and coat it with cement or something else. So what should I use to cover the sink with? Also, will a tile sink covered in cement or similar be sturdy enough to use?

Concrete is gonna be hard as hell to clean out, prevent water leaching, and the lime leaching into the pipes is gonna be nanners. I'm very interested in you keeping a record of the lime buildup over time so I can compare it to porcelain and steel, if you would.
