Hey /diy/, I'm taking it to the next level.I am going to make my own Island.
My plan:
>Buy 50 ft tarp
>Buy a really buoyant material most likely Aerogel
>Create a 50 ft ring out of aerogel
>Attach tarp to aero gel
>take it to lake and test it
Twll me why I'm a dumbas and my plan wont work /diy/.

1. aerogel is expensive as fuck
2. Once aerogel absorbs water it just becomes regular gel
You can get big o' blocks of styrofoam for boat docks and do pretty much the same thing.

they will eventually rust if you piss all over them and don't clean.
>>1175542
stainless steel rusts?
>>1175545
Yeah, it's steel with a thin coat of chromium to protect against rusting. Once that thin layer is gone, it'll rust.

I'll have £4k to spend on a new printer next month. I currently run a Flashforge Creator Pro and am looking for something that supports build volumes of at least 20x20x20, ideally 30x30x30cm. Is the Raise3D N2 Plus my only realistic option? I'm not a fan of kit printers and need an enclosed space for nylon (all metal hot end out of the box would be nice so I don't have to void the warranty immediately).
Is methacrylate a good material for a printer? sure it's an acrylic but isn't it more rigid than a lot of materials?
So how would one going about building a jet engine? preferably one big enough to propel a plane but small enough to fit on a single person aircraft.
Would it be better perhaps to use a steam engine and a propeller?
Also it must use alcohol, reason being that in a post-apoc world gasoline and others would be scarce and alcohol would be the only reasonably acquired fuel
>pic somewhat related
also im not sure where exactly this fits in so I figured it might have some luck here
>So how would one going about building a jet engine?
You can't, it's complexity and materials can't be accomplished without spending hefty amounts of money.
> steam engine and a propeller?
Retarded idea, you've got to add the weight of the water to the weight of the fuel and the big burning chamber.
A pulsejet is the simplest engine I know of, not too powerful tho and a tad noisy, but runs on gas.
I think your best bet would be to use existing motors/airplaines until you can't find more replacement parts/fuel.
>>1181018
Thanks for saging, this thread is pretty retarded.
>>1181013
>So how would one going about building a jet engine?
You can't make a jet engine to the tolerances needed without precision industrial equipment. Jets in WWII (both the Nazi jets and the experimental ones other nations were tinkering with in secret) had huge amounts of issues (IE flaring out, catching fire, exploding, just plain not working) due to 1940s materials and manufacturing. Even in the 50s jets had problems.
Your best bet for caveman aircraft is as high a power-to-weight normal internal combustion engine as you can possibly go. Also note that airplanes are fucking huge. Even small, single-person craft are nearly the size of a bus.
Also alcohol has only a bit more than half the energy of avgas and can lead to other issues such as engine knocking.
Aircraft require infrastructure for constant use. In a post-apocalyptic environment you would have none of this. As they must be flown regularly to avoid deterioration, the limited fuel and maintenance resources remaining for aircraft would quickly run dry, rending the planes into sources of scrap within a few years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAdCt6qgj9k
im thinking of something along the lines of this and then maybe working it into something more. also it would most likely be used in an ancap society so the variables for fuel and infrastructure would be more accesible
Ill keep it short and sweet. I downed about 8 trees in my yard. Now i have stumps. I have no access to a stump grinder. Nor can i burn the stumps due to there location. I heard you can rott them by drilling 10 inch holes into them and filling them with chemicals. Guess my question is what would be the best chemical to use without it harming the surrounding area? (and rotts them fast ) If you have done this before id like to hear about it
>>1182608
Most stump removers are based on Potassium Nitrate. Drill some holes and put that shit in along with some water.
It's not super fast though, it will take around a month until it is rotten enough to remove it with a hoe.
The other option is to burn it. There are hundreds of videos and how-tos on this topic.
>>1182614
>Most stump removers are based on Potassium Nitrate.
In most places in the USA that is no longer true due to regulations for preventing meth cooking.
>>1182608
I ended up build a fire on it and having a cook out. It was okay since the nearest trees were over 200 feet away so there was never a concern about a root fire causing something else to catch on fire.
For the ones in the woods I drill a few holes and put in some chicken-of-the-woods mushroom plug spawn. Because you can't have enough chicken-of-the-woods.
>>1182608
drill the holes and stuff them with mushroom spawn
I need to charge an electronic device that has a micro USB port, but I only have mini USB chargers. Buying is not an option. Would either of these work?
- Cut off the head of a charger cable, peel the wires and insert them naked into the slit.
- Remove the battery and put it in the battery slot of another device with a mini USB port. The batteries have different sizes but the piece that makes the connection is the same, so it would fit.
People like you are the reason i've applied for janitoring.

Hey, /b/ called, they want their retard back. Would you be so kind to go?
I'm hanging a flag out for this memorial day weekend, i bought a brace that looks like pic related but im hesitant to drill into the siding on my house with screws, there's a lot of vinyl and the wood needs to be fixed so i'd rather not start poking holes.
will super glue hold it? the flag im using is about 5-6 feet long and i live by the ocean so wind/salt air...
so yeah, glue? some sort of other fastener that doesn't drill into the siding?
>>1181895
No, super glue has shitty shear strength.
You'd find it easier screwing the bracket to a wooden post, then securing the post with something like grab adhesive or some sort of quick clamp if feasible
>>1181895
i should add, the brace is plastic, not aluminum.
>>1181901
wow, so screw into a block of wood and clamp it to the siding? it's going on a post essentially, my house has these railings on the second floor porch
Hey /diy/! Not too sure if this belongs on /fit/, /adv/, or here - tell me if I should remove this thread and try the other boards and I will.
I've recently been doing a hell of a lot more drywall/taping since a month or two ago. I'm not super experienced, but I can do all tasks on my own (I have the extremely expensive equipment for it.)
I was wondering if it's normal, natural when doing this kind of work to start losing the ability to move my joints, shoulders, all those rotational parts of my body after and before getting to work. My knuckles don't go as far as they used to, my shoulders kill me every time I try to lift my hands above my chest, etc.
Should I worry about my health, or is this normal? I don't want to spend the money fixing my body if it will come back to healthiness normally. I am 29 years old for reference.

Op, this is the result of being out of shape and trying to do manual labor for hours. Look up muscle fatigue and follow the various home remedies and consider light medication. If it doesn't get better after a few weeks then go see you pcp.
The easy home remedies:
Icy hot rubbed on stiff joints and muscles.
Take a multivitamin.
Hot bath with Epson salt (don't need the expensive dented kind).
More drastic and expensive:
Get a massage.
See a chiropractor if massage leaves the muscles looser but back joints are still stiff.
Most drastic:
See pcp and get a prescription for muscle relaxers (some chiropractors can do this)
Hey guys my name is anon and i am a complete newbie on subjects related to electrical and electronic stuff, therefore i am trying to make circuits that might end up with me dying for electrocution. I am looking for a way to make a portable high voltage power supply so...
Would one/a few 12v batteries connected in parallel work for my circuit?
Is there any way to calculate the time of life of the batteries?
Thanks!

The idea is to make a taser to zap
myself and end up with smashed potato for brain.
just take apart one of these disposable cameras from Fuji or Kodak. they generate aprox 250Vdc for operating the flash from one 1.5V AA battery. no doubt someone's made a how-to guide somewhere on Youtube or Instructables. cost is like $6 new or $1 at the thrift store.

I want to build a CNC mill that can handle 3/16 thickness stainless plate. Any tips on where I should start? Is it possible to build something around $5k that is robust and reliable?
Start by CNC milling all the parts out, then putting them together.
Do you mean 3/16 in a single pass?
If so you are insane and should do some research first

How the hell do you release this type of knob. There's one of those indents on either side of the handle.
I know it's gotta be simple but I'm at a loss here...
It's not designed to be disassembled. Those indents are pressed into the hub the knob is attached to. It's chinese pot metal garbage. Just twist really hard.

What should my hobby for the summer be?
I'm living on campus over the summer cause of an internship so can't really hang out with my friends back home.
I was a boy scout so I'm interested in outdoors stuff and want to do something outside most of the summer.
Thanks!
