Hello. I bought a cargo van a few years ago, and I stopped using it for contracting about a year ago. I have since finished paying off the vehicle loan, and I own a big empty van now. I drew up plans to turn it into a camper van, and the wife thinks its a good idea as well.

What do you guys think?

How do fpgas work? I've always wanted to use one for crypto currency mining but I don't know anything about electrical engineering.
>>
Field programmable gate array. Its a programmable array of logic gates. Unlike a computer processor that has things like a dedicated arithmetic unit, cache memory, io control, etc that you interact with by giving it op codes. An FPGA allows you to directly program how the gates function, something CPUs don't allow you to do. This means they are very good at doing a single thing very fast. I guess an easy way of pitting is that CPUs are engineered to be pretty fast at most things, whereas you can program an FPGA to be the fastest at one.
>>
>>1185308
An FPGA is still much slower than any ASIC at that single task.

So the outer layer of my chair has started peeling off

I wouldn't give a shit about it but it scratches the underside of my knee and is causing rashes

What's the proper way of fixing this? Has to be comfortable to the touch, looks do not matter so much

>Has to be comfortable to the touch, looks do not matter so much
You're not looking for the proper way to fix this, you're looking for the easiest and cheapest way to fix it while being just barely good enough.

Depends on your skill set, the types of tools you have available and the types of material you have available.
We need more information.

In general, if it's causing rashes on your skin, the obvious solution would be to make it smoother. Maybe some well placed duct tape would be sufficient.

Or to just sit differently (and lose some weight).
>>
>>1185224
Fair enough, the chair was cheap as shit, I got it for 40 bucks brand new so I guess I got what I paid for. Still the structure of it is surprisingly good for my posture.

For tools I have a heatgun, hot glue gun, epoxies, and plenty of electrical tools that are most likely useless for this. I don't have any new fabrics that can be attached onto it except for old cloths, and possibly a felt cloth I'm considering hot gluing to the leather above it just as a temporary cover.

I've found some ebay "leather liquid DIY repair kits" and other Vinyl adhesive type kits that seem like they might not make do the job, but what the hell maybe they're worth a shot.

The whole point of posting was to see if anyone knows a decent permanent or semi-permanent fix for this kind of material.

Losing weight won't help at all, I'm 65kg.
>>
>>1185226
Just a layer of epoxy or hotglue might help, but I assume it'd need to be smooth. Hotgluing a piece of fabric onto it might create new scratchy surfaces at the point where the fabric ends. Though that depends on the fabric and how well you choose the position where it ends.

I'd say it's worth a shot.

Anyone done Silicon casting, or the likes?

I need some smell free poured silicon/resin, for a modded computer build.
Basically, there's an area in the bottom of the case that I'm going to cut out for fans. Unfortunately the surface isn't even, so it'd interfere with the fans. So, I've figured that pouring some viscous silicon/resin into the bottom of the case, to raise and even out the bottom of the case, is the easiest way to solve the problem.

So, is there any smell free, and cheap silicon/resin?
The stuff I find is $50 for 1kg, and I can't find anything less than 1kg, I'd only need maybe 100grams... This is in Sweden, if there's any swedes that know where to buy the stuff in small quantities, it'd be very much appreciated.

You mix two liquids to make the silicon, then it cures over time... Can you even have molten silicon, won't it just burn up?

Went bed shopping.

Everything looks so cheaply made.

Side rails only 5/8 thick, woth small 3/4×3/4" "rail" made of wood.

Mystery woods or "asian hardwoods"

I looked at stuff that was in the $800-$1800 range.

If you have woodworking tools, you could build a solid bed with $100 worth of pine/fir/cedar boards, and then stain it any color you want.

Hello /diy/
A year ago I picked up this set from a carboot sale.
I have not been able to get much life out of it.
As soon as I power it up it blows its fuse.
I've wired it in series with a 200W light bulb to stop it drawing too much off the mains and all the low voltage side appears to be lighting up happily.

I cannot get a wink out of the high voltage side and needless to say no picture or sound.

Does anyone know where I might find some documentation on the set?
I have spent months searching the net and turned up nothing.

What I'd do is try replacing every electrolytic capacitor. Are you able to determine their values?
>>
>>1184171
I don't think you need a specific manual for your tv. Most TVs are designed the same.

Divide and conquer. Maybe it has a power board that you can disconnect and test separately? Maybe this part of the circuit could use some more modern components/design? Perhaps you could guess at the output voltage of the psu by looking at the required voltage of the tubes.

Definitely replace the electrolytics. You can also remove the tubes and test each of them. Generally, I would dissemble it and do a complete overhaul. Replacing wires, reflowing connections, making sure there are no shorts to ground.

There are probably methods of testing the picture tube itself too. If that is shot, there is no point in continuing.

I have a VCR/DVD combo unit with a broken DVD player. The device allows you to convert a VHS to a DVD. The dvd player is a PATA/IDE so I should be able replace it with a dvd drive from an old PC and get it working again. But then I had another idea

Hi I have a ltitle puzzle in my new apartment and it may be more of a /g/ question.

There are Rj45 jacks and the coax outlets wired in my apartment. They all lead to a switch box in the 2nd bedroom walk-in closet.

I would like to use the cat5 J
jacks for my living room media center and part of my overall home network and partly becuase I detest using WiFi for any kind of streaming and to rely on it for things like my automated aquarium controler. If the hardware and infrastructure exists I'm paying enough rent to take advantage of it.
Sadly the building landlord idiots and even worse comcast (which I have no choice in using becuase my building is wired ONLY for comcrap) have absolutely no idea it exists or how it works or is wired. I assume no one cares becuase most of the normie plebs clog the airways with wifi a anyway.

Now I opened the switch box and I switched where the coax splits and what seems to be a hub or sorts for both data and another for the conventional telephone.

I've tried testing these jack and it only works port to port (ie if I connect my modem/router to a wall jack I will only get conectivity to the terminus on that weird hub in the switch box). Obviously an actual switch/hub is required and whatever that box is, it's just an organizer.

Make things even more confusing on that data hub there is labels for living room, 1st br, 2ndbr and also a "feed" but to what?

the company that makes that is called open house but google hasn't really turned up much other then products for smart homes.

Sorry I didn't properly rotate the image . So long story short of anyone here know what the fuck I'm looking at here by all means inform me.

It would be great becuase I want to use my guestimate bedroom as a home office and part of my walk in closet space to put a server rack in.

If you connect the router to the feed port on the hub it'll probably work like you want it to

is there a question here?

no utilities know or give a shit about because its behind the demarcation point.

you are looking at 4 twisted pairs of wires in a cable assembly, most commonly referred to as Ethernet cable, and some coaxial cable.

just use it already, or dont.

So a while ago i picked up a nice ocarina from a Songbird booth at a convention that i wanted to learn how to play on, but in my excitement i forgot that i lived in apartments with paper thin walls.

I've decided that while it has looked nice on my shelf for the past year i actually want to learn to play it but i still live in apartments and need something to dampen the sound otherwise i might get hit with noise complaints.

I'd like to make some kind of fold away sound dampening booth since i dont have room to set up a dedicated space, every tutorial i've found is only for making your recording environment better, but i need something to block the high pitched shrill sounds of a novice ocarina player from making my upstairs neighbours hate me.

Any advice?

sure, why not. the relay is a solved problem, it's 180 year old technology, it's impossible to fuck up.

what i don't trust is chinese power ratings. one horsepower my ASS.

Anybody do any body work here? Haven't done much myself, but I'm restoring an old farm truck that's got some rotted rust holes, looking for suggestions for a decent MIG welder that won't break the bank and get the patchwork done. Thoughts on Harbor Freight or others?

Was looking at this one

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/81540/10002/-1

Also tacking an aftermarket 3 inch exhaust together. Backup parts and enough wire to do the job, I wanna say budget is around $300-350 since it's not a regular thing, but willing to fork out a bit more if absolutely necessary. Have gloves, brushes, and clamps to start.

This.

Check craigslist for something used.

Nicer units (Miler/Lincoln) offer features like multi-voltage plugs and better duty cycle ratings.
But a basic garage-sale buzz box will generally get things done to an acceptable level, if you're just looking to make two pieces of metal stick to each other.

Also, might consider TIG instead. Does a lot better for thin sheet metal.
A lot more expensive too, unfortunately.

So I asked /sci/ if they could help me and got a friendly response suggesting I come here and an aggressive response telling me to fuck off.

I think I have a viable blueprint for a hoverboard motor but don't have the supplies to test if I can get enough power. The only issue is, I have no money for prototyping.

Can someone make a powerful, compact electrical coil, diameter approximately 1-2 inches, hook it up to a frame so it stays in one place while spinning and see how fast it spins against a neodymium magnet when powered by the most powerful battery you have access to?

Alternatively, if you know of an accurate and cheap (see: free) simulator where I could run this without spending money, that would also be awesome.
