So I wanna replicate the desk in the picture but i don't even know where to start or what kind of wood to buy or what the legs are made of please help.
get slab of butcher block, screw on table legs
I'm guessing that's all they did.
>>1186479
>butcher block
Would they sell that at home depot?
>>1186480
Yes, but it may be unfinished. /g/ likes to get theirs from ikea.
So I have an ant colony in my room.
Fuckers are working hard in my walls.
I will exterminate them with regular ant baits but beforehand I was planning to build pic related and populate it.
Have you lads an idea how to build it?
The colony also has queens fucking around so reproduction should not be an issue I guess.

There's probably some kind of simple instructable with non toxic plaster and a large tupperware, since most kids go through this phase sometime or other. If you really want to make it look a bit more professional, you could order the set online from ebay from 15-150 bucks, athough they might bother you more and more until the actual terrarium gets to your house
larger pebbles and some sort of drainage in the bottom 2-3cm, sand on top
>>1185826
Your issue will be getting the queen to move in, and then sealing it up before putting out bait. The "good" ant bait is time delay, so they take it back and feed it to the queen = you only have to poisen the queen and eggs stop, so you don't have to keep up with egg production @ killing them.
hey everyone, First-time homo-ner here.
I need to upgrade the appliances and other DIY type things. I'm handy and can do a lot around the house, what are your favorite appliances, favorite upgrades, favorite everythings?
I'll attach pics of my place.
I like washing machines. Dryers can suck a dick.
Hey guys! I ripped up my kitchen floor to find half of the files were laid on mdf on top of the floorboards. The other half was laid on concrete because it is an extension...
Now.. how do I smooth this off without raising it too much. I know I can knock it down a bit but there are holes at the edges which makes me nervous that there is a shit storm underneath. So I would rather not..
Any ideas?
Pics to follow

Apologies for the pic. My phone being a dick. Better pics to follow.
Ok, I have straightened them up..
Hey guys, I have this old "police" flashlight with the heat lamp, guess everyone does. Ever wondered to convert it into an LED? Have you ever done it yourself? Any tips? I was trying to search for a project of this sort, but did not really find anything good. Maybe didn't use the correct words.
pic related, the torch
>>1184703
you can buy LED conversion bulbs from Maglite themselves
i've looked into making my own but you essentially have to force a high power LED into the form factor of an old xenon bulb. the little housing for the bulb is plastic so you won't be able to dissipate much heat and the center of the filament is above the base of the reflector so you'll need to deal with that. it's a lot of work when you can get a high brightness led flashlight with lithium cells for far less than conversion of an old maglite.
>>1184706
>the little housing for the bulb is plastic
LEDs are more efficient than incandescent lamps
in this case efficiency means conversion of energy into light compared to energy wasted as heat.
An LED with the same light output as the original incandescent bulb will therefore put out less heat.
a 6D maglite runs pretty hot, you can feel the heat on your skin from maybe 10-12 inches away. don't worry about the plastic melting.
however
unlike resistive elements an LED draws more current as it heats up, if it is allowed to run too hot it will try to kill itself.
if you can ensure thermal conductivity to the case it should be fine.
of course depends on the led you want. if you managed to squeeze a 100W led in there its not going to go well anyway.
>>1184703
you mean a maglite?
I have a 2C that I put a new led module into (and posted on diy about it) and it's the brightest light I have now....it runs off 2 18650s and provided you don't make the mistakes I did, it doesn't take all that long
it will take some modifying and you should get a glass lens for it
can post some beamshots later if insterested
Let's talk about wood turning and lathes in general!
I just recently rehabbed a Sears, Roebuck and Co Model 103.23070. It was sitting for about 2 decades with the parts frozen up. I completely disassembled it, installed new bearings (a bitch to find, by the way); and got an old washing machine motor to go with it.
>pic related, the lathe in the condition I got it in
>>1181917
When I bought it, for a whopping $20, the previous owner said he lost several parts when messing with it, and he never got it running.
The spindle was completely frozen on me, and I couldnt get anything loose without using a torch. I tried PB blaster initially but it didn't help much.
As you can see, it is an OLD craftsman, all cast iron. I was able to use the model number to track down a manual, and a parts list.
>>1181920
The parts list came in handy, considering the bearings were shot and the engineers that designed this lathe were cunts.
The bearing is nonstandard, so lolgoodluck finding it. After some research, I found out it is a 6203Z-3/4. As in, .75" x 40mm x 12mm. Because who doesnt switch between metric and SAE when possible.

You can literally go to a Home Depot or carpentry lumber yard and get everything you'll ever need
Am I missing something? Why doesn't this work?
press ON
>>1187245
The inverter turns on just fine, but once anything is plugged in the protect light starts blinking.
>>1187236
better hope thats gell filled and not liquid.
otherwise you shouldn't have knocked it over.
Can anyone show me an example of a product that matches the working mechanics of the pivoting point near his hand when he opens it
How it works is obvious, just watch each hinge point one at a time.
No product I know of uses this setup because it offers no functional advantages and is clearly a pinch hazard if you don't hold it properly when operating. Take your time to study it.
It's very cool art but not good for a security door because it isn't particularly strong.
>>1187137
Not very well, unless it's to keep out elephants. Even then they could probably breach the weakened hinge points.
Would have to be some sort of multi-axis hinge, most likely custom fabricated for the application.
Or possibly just a ball joint, which would be simpler.
I need some help here /diy/
I want to army build some of these woodcraft kit tanks, similar as pic related, I need to know if there is a site with scans for these woodcrafts as it will be eazy for me to make multiple copies of any given template,
Is there a site with scans of these kits
any militar kits welcomed
If this isn't the board for this, please point me out where I can ask this, I already tried in /r/ but I didn't get any help.
My powers been out for near a week and how much I care is dwindling incredibly fast. My sister is incredibly ill and the hot house is definitely not helping. When I told a friend this he gave me his portable generator but I cant power the house without backfeed.
I have a fan and our electronics connected to it with a surge protector but itd be nice to have the 4000w distributed throughout half the house.
You forgot to ask a question.
Why can't you power the house by backfeeding?
All you have to do is turn off the main breaker and feed the house through a high current outlet.
Never turn the power back on with generator connected.
>>1186824
he forgot to pay the bill, more like.
What the heck is this? I can't quite make it out in the picture.
Are the circuitboards embedded in plexiglass, or do you think this is a shadowbox of some sort?
I'm trying to come up with a plan on how to make something like this
>>1186707
>what is this?
>i wanna make it
it's just a bunch of old motherboards stuck together, some of them are a good bit older than others but all of them are obsolete.
Many of them are old server boards and it does my heart good to see ISAs again.
Circuitboards from computers glued to a normal table's top.
A slighty oversized sheet of safety glass wich is held up by putting transparant spacers with black rubber tops between te corcuitboards.
Easy to make, sheet of glass will be expensive, or get a hold of an old safetyglass window
Advise me on the purchase of a ~150mm+ max diameter lathe
It needs to be accurate and relatively inexpensive
I need to be able to cut metals as hard as 1545 steel and stainless.
I feel as if the best option is to buy something that's 20-50 years old but not too worn and clean it up
However I have no idea
>>1186698
>~150mm+ max diameter lathe
you want to machine 6" diameter materials?
>I need to be able to cut metals as hard as 1545 steel and stainless
you may have to do many passes with tiny infeeds but you can really cut anything with any lathe with the right bits
>>1186698

Yep that's the way to go. Lots of machinists don't really know how to use computers though, you might find better deals by word of mouth, i.e., call up a small machine shop and ask if they have any old manual lathes taking up space or if they know someone wanting to get rid of one.
Small shops sell old manuals to make room, that's how I got this Pratt & Whitney 16" x 54"
Also don't be afraid to look at government auctions and auctions put up by businesses looking to offload their old shit.
Now, if you find one you want to look at you need to know how to tell if it's not too beat up.
One thing to keep in mind though, they probably require 3-phase power and 220volt or 440v.
Most people don't have 3-phase power ran into their garage so a phase converter unit will be required ($$$$).
I can't find the video I'm looking for, but put an indicator on the ways and push on stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-94Oh2VgQo
run an indicator on the spindle nose too, should be less than half a thousandth of an inch 0.0005" runout on the spindle nose
>>1187040
here's a random POS in a 3-jaw showing like 15 thousandths of runout
Hey /diy/ I was wondering if there is a way to remove the ink labels off of cardboard boxes? I have about 400 of these but they all have random company logos on them and designs I don't need. Is this possible to accomplish? I just want the boxes blank
Tape over them?
paint over them
>>1186600
>I just want the boxes blank
>>1186688
>paint over them
Do you think i can use the ink from this pen, to tattoo my self.
And it says pure ink.
>>1186391
Do not tattoo yourself with any ink, from anything.
>>1186391
Stick and Poke thread?
Yes, the ink would work fine. Look at prison tats, they use bic pens so obviously it would work fine
So my toilet has been clogged the last few days, and nothing I do seems to totally work. I've used 2 plungers, hot water, soap, vinegar/baking soda...list goes on. It partially drains after all that, but only halfway and very slowly.
Catch is, it's a tankless commercial style, which I've never worked on, like pic related. My landlord is a deadbeat and keeps putting it off, so I'm trying to tackle it on my own. Any other suggestions, or special methods for this type of toilet?
>>1186346
Have you tried a snake?
>>1186350
Not yet...I was hoping to keep from buying one, but if I have to, I have to.
