Im going to make a computer case because Im unhappy with the corsair 300r i have. I know its fairly easy to make one out of wood, but metal, thats something thats thinner, better at disipating heat and is overall nicer looking when powdercoated. How hard is metalwork for one, ive never done it before. And two can i get some layout advice? Im looking at current cases that all follow the same design trend. I dont mind blocking off the pcie and pci slots on my motherboard as long as the top two are available (gpu and wifi card). The main thing im looking at is easy access to hard drives, coolness (cold) and silence. So for hard drives especially Is there a way to have some sort of stable sata+power connector that wont move when a drive is taken out from it, OR is there a way to add a switch between the power and route it to the front near the drive? Also with the gpu, it runs decently loud, so is it possible to mount a different style of cooler to it? Probably using noctua fans i imagine on a 212 or something

Sheet metal brake + spot welder.

Spot welding aluminum requires a good spot welder, so use thin steel.

You could tig weld together thin sheet metal but then you need a good tig welder ($500).

sheet metal brake + thin gauge steel + $100 harbor freight spot welder

Let the tongs cool down before you unclamp them from the metal or it will pop a divot of metal out of the weld and look like garbage.

also let the tongs cool before starting on the next weld, industrial spot welders have water cooled tongs.

Yes. It's called hot swap bays, good to have with RAID.

Hey /diy/, I was wondering if any of you have had experience in making resin toys, and if you have advice for someone just starting out?
(I've watched youtube videos on the subject, but a lot of them aren't really...that great)

I already have super sculpey (and experience with clay), and clay shaping tools, but I was wondering what kind of resin I should use, tips to make the sculpt not full of a bunch of finger prints, lumps, etc

You should 3D print it, even if you only want one and it's faster and easier to sculpt by hand. 3D printing is the only way to make anything :DDD
>>
>>1186911
no it can be done this way.
OP- once sculpted you could put a layer of mold release compound (or just some separating layer) on the sculpture and as far as resin almost any will work the difference will just be hardness and color and glossiness and such

If u make a mold i have had PERFECT luck with 2 part castable plastic. Ez-flo 60 on amazon.

Shit gets hot and sets up fast.

DO NOT get that shit on u.

Mix quick and pour. Anywhere water could get out this will. Seal up that mold good.

Hey anons, so ive been looking into bitcoin mining for a while bit havent really seriously considered it. Is it a good source of revenue at low tier? If so what rigs would you recommend?

It's probably only worth it with ASICs since you need to be able to get more money out of it than you spend on energy.

Would a laser cutter and a wooden plank be enought to faithfully replicate something like that ? I'm afraid the nuance of grey will translate badly.

>>

I suspect you are talking about laser engraving, not cutting. Yes, a laser engraver would be able to do shading BUT it will depend on your wood AND how much time you put into tweaking gradient parameters.
>>
>>1186625
Alright thanks.
>>
Are you trying to use the laser to engrave the pattern on the piece itself, or to make the block for making the print?

So, i got this badass heatsink witch i cant fit into my new motherboard.
I tought about turning it into a solar heat collector to blast with a parabolic mirror to heat water.
If i make a framework that can hold a vaccum and some pipe to pass water trough the dissipator, and obviously paint the collector black it would be done right?

Incorrect device for that purpose. All you need for that is black metal pipe and a P&T valve. You don't need a specialized collector and you don't need a vacuum. Also, the through put of such a small collector spot won't give you very good flow for making hot water.

If you really want to use the heatsink for something, get a Peltier thermoelectric module. You can use the Peltier as a heater, a cooler, or as an electric generation device. All you do is slap a heatsink on them. You could actually use one to make hot water and cold water at the same time. They can also be used in solar applications by heating one side and cooling the other with the heatsink to create electric.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/12V-60W-TEC1-12706-Heatsink-Thermoelectric-Cooler-Peltier-Cooling-Plate-Module/565254255

If you are still needing hot water from solar, look into making a solar box oven with some piping running through it.

I'm looking to repair apple phones on the go, can work out of my subaru trunk.
My 1 real problem is i can't find a 12v heat gun.
i would really not prefer to have to buy a 1000w inverter to plug into cigarette lighter, then run my 120v heat gun from that. I only need about 200~ Celsius so 12v should do that with 2-300 watts? Do you guys think that would be alright on a 175 amp alternator?
is there a torch method i could use(just asking cause that would simplify everything, not sure if one could output heat that low, mebe something like a steak torch attachment?) also im really poor rn, so the simpler the better unfortunately. thanks

P.S. To be clear, this would just be fore loosening the adhesives on iphones, not replacing cracked glass screens. so really the heat gun is only on for 2-3 minutes max at a time

I have a record player from the 80's.

There is an orange neon bulb 12v above the platter.

There are slits in the platter.

There is a light sensor underneath the platter. Depending on what patter of light is coming through, the player will know what size record is on the platter.

Pic related is the player. One of those three sets of slits is open (other two are just for decoration symmetry). The light for the lamp comes out of that semi-rectangular cutout on the left side at the back of the player.

Luxman P-102 // Marantz TT530 (same insides)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McG9IC9zibQ is some guy fixing one. You can see the lamp working at around 6:30. It's the one sticking up like a spotlight at the back.

If I can't find the OEM bulb, or even a close enough match, can I use a different type of bulb? (LED?)

Thanks. I'm not a tech dude, just fixing my dad's old shit so I can use it for myself. But I enjoy learning about it all.

Here is the schematic of the power supply section, including the bulb. The part number in the schematic is 65e02013s01, but that doesn't bring anything up on google. The bulb in the video looks like a generic indicator bulb that you can find on ebay and various online shopping sites.
>>
Can you post a picture of the bulb itself?

Also, please do a quick test: tape a torch/flashlight where the bulb should be and test with different sized record, just to test if the LDR portion (the detector) is working. Just to be sure.
>>
>>1186351
The schematic can be found on Vinyl engine if you need the rest of it. To answer your LED question, to do that you would need to find somewhere else to piggyback the LED in another part of the circuit that has lower voltage and DC current, since by the looks of the schematic it is hooked up directly to the 120v center tap on the primary of that transformer. Neon lamps require higher voltage to glow than LEDs

The most straight forward and simple way imo is just to get a neon lamp assortment like this, and find the size that best matches the original.

So I was sitting at my desk just now when I feel something run across my toe, obviously I jumped the fuck up and it was a huge cockroach.

What are the best ways to kill all of these bastards asap short of burning my house down? I've spread some diatomaceous earth around but I am not feeling satisfied with this, I want them fucking dead.

I'm talking, long term pesticides, releasing spiders into my house, I don't care. The only thing worse than these bastards is bed bugs.

Unless it's a german cockroach, I think you're overreacting. Take care of any water leaks or other sources of moisture.

If german, consider calling a pro.
I'm not usually a buyfag but I've warred with those bastards before and a pro would be better equipped to kill them without also poisoning you.

Is there a simple way to figure how wide it should be and how long its forward legs braces should be?

My monitors are too low and I want to raise them higher, but I have a fairly small glass desk, so I can't use any clamps on it and it's too small to put two monitor risers on. So I want to make a freestanding rail for a monitor arm to clamp onto capable of holding up two 24" 16:9 monitors (about 24lb altogether). Full outstretched the monitors will probably be out about 12-16" though I never expect it to be that far after the initial positioning.

I'd think the gloss would throw off the chroma keying but never tried it so can't say for sure. Would be relativity easy to test.
>>
>>1185370
The other anon is right. You don't want gloss because any point of light will have a highly specular response off of the material

Proper green screen materials are smooth and matte so that light hitting it is diffuse

hi guys, I live where there is little to no water at all (yeah, we're in a drought) So my idea was collecting rainwater in the most cheapest diy way possible. I've looked up some things online and they all mention purifying rainwater to drinking water. I only want it for showers and washing dishes...

Originally I was just thinking using tarp, a tube and a shirt to collect and filter said water, but seems like I'm going to need more than that... Any tips...?

(Yes, there will be pics of the build.)
>pic not related..

First look up your laws because many places have laws against collecting rain water, especially during droughts. Second, if you want to collect rain water without fucking over any soil that desperately needs it (as if there was a drought or something) I would make several smaller rain collectors that feed into pvc pipe that feed into a large container. It's a good idea to filter out the shit from your water but you probably want to use something better than a shirt. A window screen cut up and layered several times would work for all the big stuff.

To purify, you'll just want to use chlorine. You can put chlorine in water enough to purify it but also keep it safe to drink. You could boil it but it would take a long time to heat up to boiling point then a long time to cool down. Also de-oxygenated water sucks to drink for any extended period of time.
>>
>>1184692
I have pic related, only much larger, like a "fema" coffin (around 1000l in volume), connected to my gutters in my back yard, it's 3 meters over the ground, over a wood beam structure that also serves as a tool/broom closet. I have a hose running down from it into a tap.

I use the water to water the plants and wash things. You don't need to do much maintenance, only removing the sediment after a couple of years.
>>
>>1184715
Well if OP is in a house the roof is prime space there for rain collecting.
