I got this broken phone in a lot at a yard sale. It seems to work fine other than the screen. The top of the screen works (I can swipe down), but I can't unlock it because the bottom doesn't work.

Is there any way I (not the most technically inclined person) can get some use out of this?

I'm trying to use nail polish to put my own designs on Samsung smartphone battery covers. So long as the cover doesn't have an embossed Samsung logo, I can remove the paint and put something in polish.

The problem is I want the nail polish to match the cover's name. On this phone for example, once I remove the AT&T label, I'm free to scribble with nail polish, but I want the polish to be the EXACT same color as "Galaxy Note 3". I don't just want to eyeball the colors and have them look the same, I want some way to measure the color of the polish and make sure it matches what is already on the cover.

How do i do this?

Pantone color swatches.

Look online for common pad printing ink colors, see if there's one that's cheap, readily available from china, and close to the color you want... that's probably the one they used.

I want to add another ~400sqf onto my house. Should I even attempt to do the foundation myself or is this a thing I should pay someone to do?

Current foundation is: 6" brick outer wall with 4x4 posts every eight feet inside. It's not a particularly well built house and I was going to do 18" cinderblock outer walls with 18x18" cinderblock posts (pic related) every eight feet inside. It'd also extend about 6' below the ground, for stability and support (the current brick doesn't do this). On top would be a standard 8' lumber residential addition.

Where do you live? 6ft should get you below the frost depth almost everywhere, but we should make sure.

walls without foundation? what is this shit?!

house was built '47, standards were a bit looser back then. The builder at least used 2x4s in the frame though.

anybody here has experience with wraping foil ?

I wannaupgrade my roadbikes paintjob with some dazzle camo inspired details and was thinking about doing it via wrapping foil.

are there any specific brands I should look out for ?
anything special about the foil ?

You want vinyl wrap, plenty of vids on the youtubes about how to apply it

Foil as in kitchen foil? Fuck that.

Either get vinyl wrap online, or use HVAC tape.
Its like duck tape, but shiny.

I've got a bunch of old bricks, been taking the old mortar off with a chisel because acid is expensive as dicks and i don't want to take the beaten look off of the bricks. What are some convenient/ cool backyard things that I can make with a decent amount of brick? I don't want to do a firepit because we already have one.

Depending on how well the mortar was mixed you may be able to just give larger chunks a good whack with a hammer and it may separate cleanly
>>
>>1191960
I have no suggestions regarding what to do with em. But as someone who used to chi bricks to sell as reclaims I would recommend you use a hatchet to chip off the mortar. It's much faster and more efficient.

I have this old reciever that I got out of my grandparents barn, it should work as long as I reattach a power cord to it. It's been cut. So, I want to attach a power cord like this picture. Anyone know where I could find the part to put into the stereo, so I could actually use this cord? Or if it is even possible.

>mfw only a few weeks until I go for my training as a locksmith.

I'm panicking, /diy/. I want to actually learn the trade and do it proud, and I'm petrified I'm going to come away from the 5-Day course with information overload, and feel(/be) completely unprepared to start my business.

I'm in the UK, so there is no licencing or qualifications for locksmithing, but rather than being a relief it has me worried. The only training you can get is from existing locksmiths, usually half way across the country so they don't have to worry about stolen business, and it's 3-to-7 day courses (generally between £800-£2000). You come out as what would barely be an apprentice in the US, and have to learn the rest on the job. Apprenticeships are pretty much none-existant, and locksmithing might as well be a secret society as far as talking to anyone you aren't paying vast sums of money, or resources.

Any locksmiths or folks who know people in the business got any advice or tips, or anything to calm my nerves? I don't want to be a rogue trader, so I'm trying my best to soak up any and all knowledge and videos I can find online.

Don't most locksmiths just use pickguns?

Most of their job is just instant pickings with those, and drilling locks that can't be instantly picked. Sometimes they're called on to do other stuff, like replace or repin cylinders, copy keys, etc.

So considering the output and input always show 5V (in and out) and I want to know at any given time the current charge of the cell/cells inside a powerbank, I was thinking of getting a cheap voltage display (those that only shows the volts to the thing connected to it) and put it in parallel between the two wires that connect the cells to the powerbank's circuit board. Would that work? Would the display work even when charging / discharging? Would that damage it? Should I put it in series instead? Thanks.

>put it in parallel between the two wires that connect the cells to the powerbank's circuit board. Would that work?
Yes.
>Would the display work even when charging / discharging?
Yes
>Would that damage it?
No. A good volt meter has high impedence and has very little effect on circuits.
>Should I put it in series instead?
No, series is to measure current and would require a low impedence Amp meter

I meant something like this, to attach to the dash of my car (I'm not connecting it to the car's main battery, but instead to a powerbank that it's supposed to be hidden behind the radio):
https://www.amazon.com/RioRand-Waterproof-Digital-Voltmeter-Motorcycle/dp/B009XQKCQY/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1497198590&sr=8-10&keywords=volt+meter

And the setup would be like pic related
Instead of splicing the wires, I was thinking of soldering the voltmeter in parallel directly on the terminals of the circuit board, it shouldn't matter right?
>>
>>1191685
literally buy a $1 volt meter and connect the red wire to the red one and the blue/black one to the blue/black one

Hi /diy/, anyone suggestions on how to modify a manual water sprayer for higher pressure/range? Obviously buying a water gun would sound like a better idea but that's not an option right now.
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1191600
Im not an expert but I have a hypothesis about making the nozzle a bit tighter, this could make you shoot the water further away as you apply so much pressure but the surface area at the nozzle gets so tight that it shoots away the water with all pressure. The more surface area I believe you have on your nozzle the more pressure will be lost.

Btw wish you a good luck :)
>>
>>1191600
Also if you make the container/tubing larger And modify the lever by an increase in size you could infact apply even more pressure.

>Large Lever
>Large container of water
>Tight Nozzle

=

>Anon applies force on lever
>Lever pushes the water with a bit of air pressure
>Water shoots away some fts

>>1191600

Offtopic but somewhat related. Anyone know how i could turn one of those sprayers into an atomizer ? I also have a backpack sprayer if that would some how work better.

I recently went to visit my parents. My mom has a table that was made for her grand parents as a wedding present in the early 1900s. It was built in Lampasas TX by someone related to them. We assume that the wood was locally sourced but we have no idea what kind of wood they used. Can anyone identify this wood?

anyone have a concept ideas for a desk that is slanted?

I really want to be able to lean back while I am at the computer, but the problem is I don't how I could type comfortably.

are there such things as computer chairs with built in mouses/ keyboards?

anyone with any experience first hand with something like this?

Ill get to the point.

Is it woth it to join a place like techshop?

Cons price, tou have to jojn, and then pay a price for every safety

pro, access to tools nost could never own, like waterjets, cnc , ect.

I am planning on building a shop in my garage. But a 1 year membership is less than 1/3 the price of the saw i was looking at. And they have the saw i was going to buy.

For the cost of my shop i could buy a lifetime membership.

But it isnt "mine"

>>

Well you outlined the pros and cons yourself. In the end it will come down to the individual.

I wouldn't buy a "lifetime" membership upfront (don't know their terms) because no business lasts forever.

I'd say it's a better deal if you move locations more than occasionally.

Hey /diy/

Recent mechanical technologist grad looking to get into the field of building systems and HVAC. To a lesser extent plumbing, and gas work. Would like to help build homes wether it's design or sales- preferably somewhere I can work with people or get my hands dirty

Got any recommended intro reading? I'd like to get a better grasp before really deciding on it and It would be ideal to have some knowhow should I start applying to these kind of jobs.

Would love to hear if you guys have experience with any of this stuff.

I have a (hardy) fuchsia in my garden that's doing really well and I'd quite like to make it spread out a bit so it forms multiple plants and I was wondering the best way to do this.
I know with some plants it's as simple as pinning a stem under the ground slightly and it'll put down roots and spawn a whole new one from there but would that work with fuchsias or not?
I'd rather not mess around with cuttings etc as I don't really have the space for such things and surely these plants actually propogate in the wild so it must be possible.

>>1191247
I don't have anywhere to grow them when they are young. Unless they'd grow outside?
Also I am genuinely interested in how they propagate in the wild because they never seem to make seeds or suchlike.
>>
>>1191250
No, all plants grow up in tiny homes before they are sent off to live in the wild.
