I got this cabinet for free but when i got it home i found i can't get it through a bend in a low ceiling corridor. It's just too tall.

I'm gonna need to take it apart. What's the best way to remove a side board without damaging anything? obviously it already needs sanding and repainting but i don't really have time for that right now so i'd rather not make it worse.

I've got some woodworking tools around, but honestly i'm clueless.
help?

This is what i'm working with. Looks like the boards are stapled in place, if there's glue i'm not seeing any runoffs.
Who does that?? And how is it so fucking sturdy?!

are you slow? pull the staples out?

I'm looking at picking up a used metal lathe. I'm mostly looking to do small parts. I don't want something so tiny that its a toy, but by the same token I don't want a 12 foot turret lathe. I've been watching craigslist for a while but I really have very little idea about what I'm looking at.

Is a new import a better buy than a clapped out model from craigslist? What brands should I be keeping an eye out for?

What kind of inspection should I do before purchasing a used lathe? I know I need to look at the ways, listen to bearings, and look at the lead screw and half nut, but I don't really know exactly what I'm looking for (except for bearing noise) or if there's anything else I need to inspect.

Any advice for a novice?

Find Mrpete222, also known as Tubalcain, on YouTube. He has videos specifically addressing what you're asking. He's talking about buying used lathes if it matters, but you'll probably find a better used one than a current production one, for less money.
>>
>>1196022 There are a lot of different things to consider when buying a lathe.

1) What size diameter are the part's you plan on making.

2)What type of metal do you intend to use Brass, Aluminium, Steel or something else.

3)What types of machining do you intend on doing.

If you are just looking for something that will be able to do most things what you want is something like a 6ft bed 6" 3 jaw chuck student lathe (if you can pick up a Colchester Student that would be ideal).

When you inspect the lathe go in the headstock and check the wear and feel of all the gears in every speed, ask how much backlash there is on the handles, check if the threading gears work also make sure the automatic cross-feeds are both working ( x + z) ensure that the Emergency stops all work, see if the coolant pump works too that's always nice.

If you can get some free stuff thrown in that would be great, ideally you want both a 3 and 4 jaw chuck.

1. I don't see myself going much larger than a couple inches in anything but plastics.

2. Probably all of the above at some point plus plastics and small diameter titanium. I was under the impression that it was more the tooling and speed/feed that affected performance in different materials, is there more to consider?

3. Threading is very important to the projects that I'd like to do so power feed is a must.

Hello diy, i want to run 9 circuits using 1 inch EMT pipe using 10 awg thhn wire rated at 90 degrees using the 3 phase multiwire method with 3 shared neutrals so thats 12 wires plus 1 ground and sine i can run 16 wires on 1 inch EMT well i'm ok on that i been reading the nec 310.15 page that allow up to 9 circuits on a raceway with a derate of 70% wich gives me a derate of 21 amps, i'm using 20 amps brakers so again i think i'm ok there, but the question is if those 3 shared neutrals are considered current carrying conductors by the inspector or ill be fine.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1195703
i can't answer your question but i can give you a curious anecdote from UK regulations last time i checked you don't have to derate wiring run together if they are part of the same circuit. which to me seems retarded.

if its 3 phase how much do you expect the neutral to carry? if it is anything then is a conductor so i guess you count it. if nothing then why put it there?

i tried to look at the code you said but i gave up when i saw "ampacity" fucking hell.
>>
>>1195719
the problem with the nec, that it is left to the inspector to interpret it how they want to. so you can end up with 2 inspectors, giving you totally different answers, if you know who the inspecror is, ask them.
>>
Just from a professional stand point don't share neutrals. Break your self of the habit and you will have less problems down the line.id also run 2 1in or 3 3/4. Just to make it easier on yourself and leave some wiggle room in the conduit. What are you running the circuits for? 277 or 120?

Quick rundown: I inherited 10 acres in a gorgeous location. It has a ~ΒΌ mile driveway which runs along the property line. To the south of the driveway is a cornfield, and overall the cornfield has a gradual incline. There's a small ditch between my driveway and the cornfield. There are rolling hills which create a few problem areas where the spring snow melt causes the water to wash over my driveway and the erosion is significant at times. I've already identified two areas where I'll have to install culverts, but previous erosion has fucked up the ditch in a few places so that the water doesn't properly flow to the already existing culvert.

To complicate the issue, power lines travel down the edge of the property line, on the southern edge of the ditch. 2-3 locations where I would want to build a retaining wall have power line poles driven into them. How can I build a retaining wall with those power line poles a few inches behind the area where the retaining wall should be? Would I get in trouble if I were to use the power line poles as an anchor for the retaining walls?

What is the most pain-free method of carving the sediment out of the ditch so water can freely flow to the culvert?
Due to the rolling hills, I would only need a few sections of retaining wall. What are my options for creating an effective yet visually pleasing section of retaining wall?
I'll be paving the driveway with asphalt eventually. In which order should I handle these operations: building the retaining wall, landscaping the ditch with rocks, paving the driveway.
How much of this do you think I can do by myself? I know I'll have to hire someone to pave the asphalt, but everything else seems realistic for me to do.

Paving the driveway would be cheaper than both the walls and the culvert and would solve the erosion problem as well.

You need to think long-term maintenance as well. If you're having erosion problems that means your culvert will need to be cleaned out. If you don't put the proper time, effort, and funds into a wall it will fail on you.
>>
>>1195292
Thank you for your input. The driveway is the thing that is mostly eroding. The rolling hills sometimes erode, but that's on my neighbors land. Those eroding hills sometimes deposit sediment in our ditch, which builds up over time and becomes an issue. Preventing that sediment would be the job of the retaining wall, but perhaps I would need something else to manage that issue.

I'll probably have to hire someone for a consultation due to the complexity of this problem, but that wouldn't be the end of the world.
>>
>>1195331

I would fill in the ditch and let the stormwater sheet flow across the driveway, unless the topography is causing the flow to concentrate at a few points and/or you live in an area where temps fall below freezing for a significant portion of the year.

If you are still concerned about your neighbor's erosion you may want to Google permanent sediment control devices. You would need a linear device, not one that covers an area. I can't think of one off the top of my head but if I think of one I will come back and post.

Would something like this be possible/feasible?

Basically I want a raised bed garden in my back yard, but theres no water source. The beds would be 1x4 feet of winter vegetables so the water needs would be really low. I don't know anything about plumbing or irrigation but I came up with this idea of having a valved hose that would siphon water out of a giant jug which would run to an irrigation system that would water the beds. I figure I could just fill the bucket once a week or every other week and itd be enough since the beds are so small + i could mulch them.

I have an arduino laying around so I thought I'd automate that part for fun if I could figure out how to make it actually work.

Yes, but you only need a container of water and a cotton wick (rope). Just put the wick through piping when it is above ground. You can use lots of wicks to various locations, directly to the plant base.

There's also a system called "Ollas Irrigation". It uses a terracotta pot, buried in the ground near the plants. You just fill it up as needed.

On a serious note, I do put a great deal of passion into "real" woodworking, doing nice cuts, precision joinery, applying rich stains and endless coats of lustrous finishes.

Most of the time, I'm getting on with it like a man. But sometimes...

I feel.

I live in a brick building and there's a room with wallpaper I want to paint over with latex.
The internet sez I should:
>clean wallpaper
>cover with primer
>spackle wallpaper seams
>rub everything with sandpaper
>clean off sandpaper residue
>paint
...while my parents are saying that all I have to do is clean it, paint it and that the internet's advice is needlessly complex.
Will I be fine if I just clean and paint it? The wallpaper is pretty well-preserved except for certain edges, no danger of it completely falling off or whatever.

>>
>>1196618
Remove the wallpaper before you paint.
>>
>>1196620
But then I'd have to hire someone to spackle the entire room, I was hoping I could avoid by quickly painting over the wallpaper
>>
>>1196622
>hire
You can do that by yourself.
The main question here is whether you want nice-looking results or something crappy.

I have an AOC pc monitor, I only ever had it on when I was actively using it, so sometimes it would be off for up too a week at a time, went to turn it on a few days ago, and nothing, no power light, nothing from the screen. I tore it apart, and to me, the boards, and components look fine, if someone would like to look, in case I am missing something, that would be great.

The ice is in closed bottles anyway, so if it melts, it won't evaporate into the air. Whatever condensation builds up inside, was extracted from the air anyway.

I'm planning to build a bunker (out of actual materials) and I want to to look nice so I don't shoot myself down there. The plan is to have decent woodwork like pic related in the bunker.

Here's the DIY part. The plan is to have the hole excavated then build the floor and walls out of 4mm steel reinforced with square bars, which I would do myself. The tricky part is that because of the shitloads of VOCs and sawdust woodworking produces I want to build the walls and floor first, put in the interior, then put on the ceiling and do the concrete pour(s) so the air quality isn't worse inside than out and so I can get everything in.

Am I retarded or would this work?
26 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
You're retarded, just buy a pre made storm shelter or:
>Get somebody to check your soil
>Hire an excavator and dig your hole
>Get somebody to pour the concrete for the floors
>Build walls out of cinder, that's been reinforced with rebar and concrete
>Get professionals to sort out the ceiling and entrance
>Get professionals to sort out ventilation
>Have a single bed and lots of shelves
>Use your shelf space wisely (meaning only 1-2 guns that permanently live in the bunker)
>Never use it
