For example

Drawing a thing I find appealing makes me feel better, and makes picking what to draw less stressful when I feel like just doodling. Also, making other people happy with my drawings is second priority, or else I'd be overwhelmed by trying to make a real job out of this.

So the comic that the entire thing is meant to fund doesn't count as "something in return." I mean, it's not as if that's what the entire thing is going off of. People donate the money and, in return, the comic gets made when it otherwise would not. Sounds like somethings being gained in return to me.

Not to mention there's never a guarantee you'll get anything in return from Kickstarter either. There's been several stories of Kickstarter campaigns taking the money and running. It actually seems less likely here since Pizzabagel would still hope for commissions in the future and not following up on something like this (if the money is raised as needed) wouldn't exactly help in that regard.
