Why are people so divided about this show?
What are the good aspects of it?
How is the fandom different on here than on Tumblr/Reddit etc?
The show is okay. I could do without the chiptune music and crying, though. As far as the fandom is concerned, it's all toxic as shit no matter where you go. The only question is, which is worse, the Undermeme fandom or the SU faggots?
I hypothesize it has to do with the perceived "social justice" aspects on the show during a bad political time (the overemphasis on political correctness in Western countries). Which causes people to be biased towards hating it or finding negative things to botch about when others just want to discuss the damn show. When I started watching it (I.e., when it first aired) I didn't think it would blow up so much or that /co/ would feel so much as shirt from this innocuous show.
I think something good about the show is that it cares about character dynamics and laying out meaningful themes. I don't consider myself part of /sug/, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some overlap with r/stevenuniverse and Tumblr.
The "why people hate it" part is on the money, especially last two parts.
I think the final nail in the coffin was that incident from last year when Tumblr's portion of the fandom organized attacks on some teenager just because she drew Rose Quartz as thin woman and it nearly led to the kid's suicide.
Even after the ordeal, the people responsible for it were acting smug and self-righteous about it and when Rebecca Sugar and Ian JQ called them out on it, the Tumblr fandom called them pedophile and rape enablers just because they stood in defense of a traumatized kid.
Seriously, fuck SU fandom.
It has themes of body positive, space lesbians, genderfluid, ect ect.
So naturally, it attracts a certain group of insufferable people.
Take all that away though (and i really don't see any problem with any of those themes by themselves since they come naturally to the storyline) and it's a highly developed and realized show with probably the biggest heart on tv.
It's divided because too many threads were made.
You make a lot of threads about something and anons will complain about it, then they complain about the show, then anons defend it and it turns into a massive pissing contest of who can go the longest, then other anons see these anons being dumb as hell and make assumptions about the show based on that.
>How is the fandom different on here than on Tumblr/Reddit etc?
If you don't know the difference between 4chan in general and those places, you must be new here
And new is not welcome
People like it because it's the best cartoon on tv.
People don't because they are contrarian faggots and hate anything popular. They hide this fact by going "muh tumblr!"
>/v/ STILL bitching about Undertale
>When there's zero discussion besides retards shitposting about how terrible it is now
Christ I can't even escape this on /co/
It's not everyone's cup of tea, it's popular so it has a vitriolic hatebase because people that get assmad about children's cartoons have a hard time escaping it, it's somehow tumblr even though I personally can't even begin to comprehend why you'd think that if you watched more than the first few episodes, and the first few episodes are some of the worst visually and Steven-y in the whole series, thereby immediately turning off some people.
I also find it incredibly odd that shows where the creators or crew have been confirmed to browse/post on 4chan get called tumblr, even when they actively distance themselves from it.
I hate the place as much as the next guy, but these "muh tumblr" threads should be a fucking bannable offense. If you want to bring up Steven Universe, either make it a strictly discussion-driven thread or go to >>>/trash/sug/.
It's a nice show that's subjectively brought down by a shitty fanbase trying to project themselves onto it and make it something it isn't. Try it out for yourself; the rest of this thread will do nothing but turn you off from it.
It a really great show I'd recommend to anyone. It's nice eye candy when it comes to color choices and character building.
It's a good show, therefore it obligated to have a negative side to it's fandom. That's anything that's a decent show and popular. In this case, it's tumblr, an easy ass target, being super defensive about this show because it's showing actual good morals, and has a lesbian couple that has more than once kissed ON SCREEN. Not to push away other already LGBT cartoon characters but this is a major milestone for cartoons.
Cartoon media has declared showing gay characters showing that they actually care about each other is a no-no. Because television censorship is too much of wimpy dicks and pussies to deal with bible humpers wining that their children are being exposed to gayness on facebook.
So of course, the sjw side of tumblr has to treat this show as their cinnamon roll covered child and hiss at anything that isn't "progressive" in this show. Its fucking stupid but thank god Rebecca doesn't give a shit those idiots and does what she wants. Seeing this show shut down due to it's obnoxious fanbase would be the worst.
In short: This show is really good at showing important subjects without being super obvious about it. I always tell people to ignore the fanbase and give the show a chance.
they aren't even comparable.
SU is a show made for kids and teens that has acceptance as it's main theme. SUX (SU extremists) will attack kids and teens who draw characters that slightly deviate from the bodypositive worldview by making a character slightly thinner or shipping them as a straight couple or something. Want to see a midtwenties mentally ill person tell a 13 to kill themselves for making fat people feel bad, then join the SU fandom!
UT has furries and people posting in character on youtube videos. It has sjw as well but it's not even remotely as bad as SUX.
>IF YOU DON'T LIKE ME SPERGING OUT AND BRINGING UP THIS GAME TO RAG ON IT EVEN ON A FUCKING CARTOONS BOARD GO SOMEWHERE ELSE
Kill yourself you fucking faggot, Jesus Christ can you even hear yourself
>Used to be, MLP has taken a nose dive in quality over time.
Not really, the recent season has been the best since S2. The only dip the show ever took was back with S3 and even people blow that out of proportion, it just went from being good to being mediocre and that season was hardly a full season anyway
SU feels a bit more grounded in reality and there is a deep sadness in the world that makes the sweet moments feel more profound and natural. FIM feels a bit too sugary for my taste to really get emotional payout but then again i only watched the first season years ago.
>SU is so progressive and inclusive
>not a single fucking East Asian in sight
Fuckin' Jew coalburning bitch.
>/sug/ relocated to /trash/
>/co/ still gets 3+ SU threads at any one time instead of just taking it to the general
Fair enough, I watched like five episodes of SU and didn't care for it mainly because I found all the leads to be some level of annoying aside from the black one, who was just kinda there
Yeah, the Transfandom...which they later realized was less than ideal.
You do realize you're likely talking to a teen who was still in diapers when those fandoms existed, right?
I consider myself a fan of MLP and Steven Universe but the word fandom is pretty cringe, I like these cartoons because I like them, I don't want to be grouped with another bunch of people who also like them and given a dumb name like fandom.
Yeah basically, liking something is personal to me, it's cool to talk about things with people but it shouldn't become part of your identity. I understand identity is big deal to young people which let's face it, these shows are designed for, like subcultures, etc, fandoms seem similar to them but yeh, basically don't want any part of that.
>but it shouldn't become part of your identity
This is the biggest problem. It just encourages people to take dissenting opinion as a personal attack and leads to console wars bullshit.
/co/ is guilty of it a lot, too.
Yes, I know. I acknowledged that. And I said not all asians have to be east-asian. I argued that it is better to have an Indo-asian, since it breaks the idea that all asians are east-asian.
It's because east asians are almost considered white since they have (usually) pale skin. And why would Steven Universe add a whitey into the mix??? sm h f a m that would b problematic
>I don't want to be grouped with another bunch of people who also like them and given a dumb name like fandom.
Only...it isn't new, like at all, it's the general word for any group of fans since like forever, it isn't some new slang term or something. Stop being fuckin' dumb kid.
>It's okay to be hateful and close-minded because-
No. Don't even start the process of justifying that kind of behavior.
>that attempt to tell a mediocre overarching storyline in an 11 minute format
It's a funny show if you're a kid, but I have been stuck inside this fireplace for two days and no one is coming around to help me, it's cold and I'm starving, ate some dirty chimney snow to quench my thirst and it's the most disgusting thing ever, please send help
Undertale has a close-minded fanbase?
I've never delved too much into the Undertale fandom, but I liked the game a lot. All I saw was /v/ going from "Hey, this game is good!" when they first got into it to "Forget this, it sucks!" when it got popular.
No, it's made by an international group of people for an international audience. The point still stands, Connie and her family were created as an intentional counterpoint, to feature an ethnicity other than Japanese or Chinese.
I think people generally agree the show is decent to good. It's just morons from /sug/ and tumblr act like it's the best show ever and spam their shit everywhere so people on /co/ hate SU now.
Yes and this just got in:
Seems Hasbro finally got its priorities straight after the failure that is Equestria Girls
Nah, Undertale is the flavor right now, and it's even more sad than bronies.
Shitty music, goofy characters and a bunch of crying is all you need to make a successful product these days.
Seriously strawmanning aside, I can tell you three main reasons without going "muh tumblr" why the show is at least overrated.
The drama is okay but it does become a bit formulaic. Pearl having separation anxiety from Rose makes her needy and leads to a psychotic break, Amethyst feeling insecure because she wants to be a firebrand against conformity but deep down wants to be accepted and will conform to others/reject them. Garnet being seen as the paragon but in actuality her fusion is actually hard knock life and being the strong but caring bear.
It's not bad in itself but it normally goes something something feels, gems can't process and breakdown, steven's hug/love snaps them out the funk, gem defeats problem, steven or gem laughs or looks at/off camera and fades to starry black. Gets kinda boring once you can predict the plot less than a minute in the show.
Second is the time slots. For what Rebecca wants I honestly can't see it being done right in 11 minute episodes without becoming hollow fluff. There is canon contrary to other's opinions (which I enjoy) but unless the episode is a season finale or maybe a slight backstory episode, nothing really feels meshed together. It feels like a lot of life lessons are shown but never really learned and have to be repeated with a slight twist (especially S2 episodes).
Thirdly is the concept of Steven as a whole. I'm okay with an annoying kid who's just living their life but he normally comes off either as a kid who just stumbles into saying the right thing to a young adult that knows what's going on and can formulate his own plans and enact them to teach other people lessons. Now you could argue that this is being a kid but it comes off kinda hollow to know that this kid can think and act like an adult when it's needed but we have to wait for the gem/steven breakdown for him to show up rather than seeing him be proactive and use previous life lessons to prevent at least some of the problems him/gems gets into.
>a cartoon about tiny magical pastel-colored horses es and marketed to little girls has pretty pony princesses in it
The show's like five years old and yet people keep on expecting it to be Dark Souls: TAS.
Please tell me you just made that up and that it's not an actual widely-used term.
And as for the thread topic, I love the show. Will never understand fandoms in general and why they take themselves/the show so seriously. It's like you can't genuinely like something without joining a weird cult about it where only a single opinion is accepted
like it was with MLP before the show went to shit and I dropped it.
I've only ever seen this show shitted on here T.B.Q.H. The show is pretty good, if disproportionately popular. However a VERY vocal minority of 4channers can never shut the fuck up about tumblr and SJWs and they'll never let anyone forget that it's a show made by people from tumblr, so you have all the shitposters on /co/.
