I marathoned ATLA and LoK a couple weeks ago for the first time. The only real complaints I had with Korra were the fact that she lost entirely too fucking much. She's an Avatar who frequently gets beaten by normal benders but that sort of bleeds into the second complaint. The second isn't so much the fault of the character so much as it is the fault of the show's production cycle. Never knowing if another season was coming and having to write each finale as the series finale makes the show seem really scattered and makes each new antagonist seems disproportionately stronger as they always followed each finale that was already wrapped up.

I think Korra got beaten more than Aang because the show was "darker" and she was older, so they could afford to show her getting beaten up more. The pattern the show sort of followed was that early in the season Korra would run into a new type of enemy, they would beat her and then steadily over time she would get better and lose less and less to them (after her first encounter with the Equalists none ever beat her in a 1 on 1 fight).

And as much as I liked the show, they knew since before book 1 started airing they were going to have three more books, so it doesn't really excuse them for not having more coherent writing.

See the thing is, Korrasami was a crack ship before book 4's ending. NOBODY, not even the most adamant shippers of it, thought it was going to happen, and the most commonly spoken wish from them wasn't they hope it would happen, but that Mako and Korra wouldn't get back together so they would have an easier time shipping Korra and Asami. If even your most diehard shippers didn't think it was going to happen even with all your "hints", you're the ones who did something wrong.

I'm a very avid slash shipper and a sane one who recognizes most of it is made-up cutesy headcanon for both girl/girl pairings and male/male ones. I didn't watch Korra until it was all finished, so I already knew of the twist ending when I marathoned it.

I could completely see how the ship was brought up (two attractive girls, awkward relationship that goes to rocky that goes to friendship). But as of the fourth season, I couldn't see anything that could be canon. And then I read about the writers' responses to people's hesitation with the ship, and it was completely soured for me.

It's kind of hard to explain. Going back to the JKR comparison, a lot of fans have started to criticize her for revealing all this new information about characters that just happens to pander to the fandom's wishes as her trying to make it seem like HP was always this super progressive story when really, she didn't think about any of this shit when she was writing. It's usually considered weak representation and more about the author wanting to keep their story in the spotlight for as long as they can than it is them wanting to have good representation.

So it's peculiar the fandom that considers itself to be super progressive doesn't seem to care that two more characters (one of which is likely dead) were confirmed to be bi/gay in what was probably an offhand remark from the creators.

It made financial sense. ATLA's legacy meant that LoK was basically a guaranteed hit. Greenlighting just a thirteen episode season was cheaper than the 24 ep order that all three ATLA seasons had. Then Whoever was the showrunner for Nick's programming decided that shitty live action was the way to go and relegated LoK to this weird limbo of still being in production but essentially being cancelled.

Sokka was flippant, sarcastic, and generally made light of very serious situations. Bolin was this exact same fucking character-type. Even their pattern of speech and delivery of jokes is the same type.

Varrick on the other hand is a totally different type of humor. He's like a mad scientist who's too rich to actually have to worry about the science. He's selfish, not really caring about profiting off others, or ordering around Zhu Li. He talks incredibly quickly and often is bizarre analogies.

If you seriously think Bolin isn't "Sokka: But Worse Edition" you're fucking wrong.
