>>79690295 I marathoned ATLA and LoK a couple weeks ago for the first time. The only real complaints I had with Korra were the fact that she lost entirely too fucking much. She's an Avatar who frequently gets beaten by normal benders but that sort of bleeds into the second complaint. The second isn't so much the fault of the character so much as it is the fault of the show's production cycle. Never knowing if another season was coming and having to write each finale as the series finale makes the show seem really scattered and makes each new antagonist seems disproportionately stronger as they always followed each finale that was already wrapped up.
>>79690514 I think Korra got beaten more than Aang because the show was "darker" and she was older, so they could afford to show her getting beaten up more. The pattern the show sort of followed was that early in the season Korra would run into a new type of enemy, they would beat her and then steadily over time she would get better and lose less and less to them (after her first encounter with the Equalists none ever beat her in a 1 on 1 fight).
And as much as I liked the show, they knew since before book 1 started airing they were going to have three more books, so it doesn't really excuse them for not having more coherent writing.
>>79690244 B-b-but anon, she BLUSHED when Asami complimented her hair!
I swear, people who argue in favor of the lesbian build-up likely have never seen girls interact in real life. And if it hadn't been shoehorned off-screen at the end by the author, everyone would write off Korrasami like they write off every other slash OTP (because let's face it, both are wishful thinking by shippy minds).
I mean, good for the shippers who got their pairing made canon, but suddenly anyone who doesn't see the nonexistent buildup has "heterolenses," and that's just insulting.
>>79691863 >because let's face it, both are wishful thinking by shippy minds See the thing is, Korrasami was a crack ship before book 4's ending. NOBODY, not even the most adamant shippers of it, thought it was going to happen, and the most commonly spoken wish from them wasn't they hope it would happen, but that Mako and Korra wouldn't get back together so they would have an easier time shipping Korra and Asami. If even your most diehard shippers didn't think it was going to happen even with all your "hints", you're the ones who did something wrong.
>>79692299 Yeah, I can remember as book 4 got closer and closer to its end a lot of Korrasami shippers were saying things like, "oh well at least we had the letter and the blushing", and nearly every episode had them asking where Asami was, why wasn't Asami involved, those sort of things. It's disappointing and annoying as someone who is bisexual that so many people have turned around and started kissing these two straight guys' asses because one of them used tumblr's own stupid narrow-minded mindset to embarrass and shame anyone who didn't see Korrasami coming.
>>79692416 I'm a very avid slash shipper and a sane one who recognizes most of it is made-up cutesy headcanon for both girl/girl pairings and male/male ones. I didn't watch Korra until it was all finished, so I already knew of the twist ending when I marathoned it.
I could completely see how the ship was brought up (two attractive girls, awkward relationship that goes to rocky that goes to friendship). But as of the fourth season, I couldn't see anything that could be canon. And then I read about the writers' responses to people's hesitation with the ship, and it was completely soured for me.
>>79692522 That part was one of many missed opportunities to build a stronger case for Korrasami. Korra herself didn't even know why she only wrote to Asami when all she had to say was something like, "I never knew what to say but I thought Asami would be able to understand me when I did". And Asami apparently had nothing to add that line of conversation.
If everything in book 3 and book 4 between Mako and Korra was supposed to be 100% platonic, there was literally no reason why they couldn't throw in a few more lines between Korra and Asami about how much they trust each other.
>>79692550 Yeah, when it comes down to it the most annoying thing about this is how Bryke will only surround themselves with people who will kiss their asses for the ending. They've already started copying JKR and have confirmed Kya and that Red Lotus guy from Zaofu are LGBT, but the fandom has been suspiciously quiet about that.
>>79690636 >And as much as I liked the show, they knew since before book 1 started airing they were going to have three more books They knew Nick told them they'd have three more books. Just like Nick told them they'd have four books with ATLA. I don't blame them for distrusting Nick here.
But you are absolutely correct that they planned jack and shit and it showed. Her one character arc kept replaying season to season and she learned nothing.
Amazing character design and plot setup, and a followthrough that signaled exactly how much ATLA depended on the writers they refused to rehire.
>>79692719 I flat-out dislike the guy(s). The fact they had to accuse the audience of not seeing it because they're hetero is what got to me: it's was like reading a thirteen year old defending their first yaoi/yuri OTP, and that's just NOT for a professional should approach things.
>>79692729 I didn't mind Rowling's, because it didn't feel like such huge pandering and Dumbledore's sexuality has 0% to do with Harry's quest. Bryke were just playing with the ships they very well knew existed in the hopes that it would bring a last gush of interest to the series, in an attempt to remain relevant a tad longer.
>>79688922 The Gospel of Jesus Christ is that he died for the sins of his people and rose again 3 days later. 40 days later he ascended into Heaven and will return again to judge the world and restore the creation. The time to repent and submit to the will of God and to believe that Jesus is the Messiah is now.
>>79692938 I was referring less to that and just to Korra as a whole, I guess.
Cause it's EXACTLY the same thing that happened with George Lucas. He has plenty of people in the original trilogy to tell him when his ideas were fucking stupid, as opposed to the sycophants who were too fucking scared to say he was wrong when making the prequels.
>>79692983 >they had 3 seasons planned out from the start incorrect The amount of filler in the first half of S3 came from the writers believing they had another season, and then suddenly the pace got breakneck when they didn't.
If they're saying otherwise, it's because Nick had its foot on their throats (e.g. never shit-talking the movie because Korra would be axed if they did).
>>79693046 >Cause it's EXACTLY the same thing that happened with George Lucas. It is very good that Bryke got rich off this enterprise because their reputation after S1 as writers is burned and gone. They will continue to work in the industry if they so choose, but they won't headline a project without crowdfunding retards to finance it.
>>79692896 I can't remember the exact source, but last I saw it was still on the wiki so it hasn't been declared non-canon by Bryke.
>and what's suspicious about that It's kind of hard to explain. Going back to the JKR comparison, a lot of fans have started to criticize her for revealing all this new information about characters that just happens to pander to the fandom's wishes as her trying to make it seem like HP was always this super progressive story when really, she didn't think about any of this shit when she was writing. It's usually considered weak representation and more about the author wanting to keep their story in the spotlight for as long as they can than it is them wanting to have good representation.
So it's peculiar the fandom that considers itself to be super progressive doesn't seem to care that two more characters (one of which is likely dead) were confirmed to be bi/gay in what was probably an offhand remark from the creators.
>>79693517 >but effectively sabotaging any chance for there to be anything Avatar related in animated form AGAIN. Eh, Nick wasn't exactly treating Avatar well when ATLA was airing. I really think it was actually the movie that made them realize this wasn't the kind of series they wanted to support (book 1 of Korra would have already started on by then). What's a shame is that they won't sell the franchise to someone else, they could make a lot of fucking money doing that.
>>79693761 >Why did Nick give them the ability to make the show then kinda shit on them while they were making it? It made financial sense. ATLA's legacy meant that LoK was basically a guaranteed hit. Greenlighting just a thirteen episode season was cheaper than the 24 ep order that all three ATLA seasons had. Basically, they just needed to produce the episodes ordered. Then Whoever was the showrunner for Nick's programming decided that shitty live action was the way to go and relegated LoK to this weird limbo of still being in production but essentially being cancelled.
>>79693940 I'm probably remembering this wrong, or maybe it's just an urban legend made up to explain why Nick was so weird about book 3, but supposedly Bryke wanted there to be less "filler" episodes in book 3 and even planned on doing episodes about the lion-turtles, but Nick told them no. That apparently has something to do with how it's easier to air self-contained episodes out of order which extends the show's airtime and helps it make more money.
>>79694015 That's always been a thing. Networks like episodes they can just toss up in any order. Writers not so much since it limits story. Part of the reason Netflix does it in batches. Bigger stories and the writers get more room to flex.
>>79694805 Let's be real, Asami would have been shuttled off by anyone else who knew how to write well and didn't keep characters around just because they happened to like them without actually having a plan for what to do with them. And then Korra would have gotten together with Opal, as it should have been.
>>79690514 >. Never knowing if another season was coming and having to write each finale as the series finale makes the show seem really scattered and makes each new antagonist seems disproportionately stronger as they always followed each finale that was already wrapped up. The last three seasons were greenlit while the first was airing. This was a legit issue in the first season where Nick sprung like eight extra episodes on them out of the blue but for anything after that there's only their incompetence to blame.
>>79695185 >Asami's character was more than workable, unfortunately Bryke are autistic. Oh yeah I agree, I just like to exclude Asami from as much as I can because I like to remind her fans how irrelevant she is, because I am spiteful.
>>79695424 Well I do feel bad for the Asami fans who just wanted her to be relevant in ways that didn't involve who she was fucking. I don't feel sorry for the Asami fans who drank the "Asami Sato is the real hero you're just too dumb to see it, just wait" kool-aid.
>>79695324 >Asami will never be the antagonist in Book 2 trying to avenger her father after Korra imprisoned him >Pulls a Zuko in book 3 and finds her road to redemption >book 4 is her allying herself with the avatar against the deadly machine army she helped create in her state of grief while also falling love with korra
>>79696355 Zuko was made into a cunt who's view of honor was twisted by his father. With the help of a loving uncle he grew into a stubborn but awkward young man who found what honor truly meant for him.
Mako wants to protect his brother and loves the ladies. He's also kind of a cunt and whinges all the time.
>>79696101 Did you even watch the series past those episodes?
Because I highly doubt you did. Or you have early signs of Alzheimer's or some form of amnesia.
I can name plenty of Korra tracks.
Jinora's Light Squeaky Rags Air Tight Hittin' on All Sixes Before Fresh Air Greatest Change War The Legend of Korra(finale ending song) Balance(Book 4 trailer song) To Heal Red Lotus Theme Kuvira's Theme Destroy the Colossus Prologue Service and Sacrifice(Jinora ceremony song) Credits song
Here's what I can name from ATLA:
Theme song Tsungi Horn The Last Agni Kai Peace the Nomad Songs Lion Turtle Theme Leaves from the Vine Credits song
>>79696672 So he can- what? Continue to be a pacifist? Aang was already being nice to Zuko. What, was Aang going to try and chat it out? >Hey you're the grandson of this guy I know and he was a cool person so maybe don't do the thing that would get you your old life and "honor" back and let you see your home and family again, kay?
>>79696738 Remember the episode where he transformed into Kyoshi? He could literally summon Roku and tell Zuko to stop fucking around and trying to kill the vessel that's carrying his grandfather's spirit.
>>79696803 Well King Bumi showed that benders tend to live at least slightly longer lives than nonbenders, so it stands to reason that female benders are fertile for maybe an extra ten-fifteen years compared to our current rate.
>>79697182 She was like 250, but Aang would have live much, much longer had he not spent so much time in the avatar state. So he would have, presumably, tapped out at 170 assuming he had lived his life as the avatar normally.
>>79697553 >If Nickelodeon sold the rights to Avatar, the next studio could have the whole thing be a weird spirit fever dream of Korra's as she wakes up as little kid still desperately trying to master earth bending
>>79697765 >Bumi could've been this ass-kicking nonbender general that everyone always underestimates but he stomps their shit in with guerilla warfare bullshit- and it could've played into the divide between benders and nonbenders as Amon grew in political power >nah he's a stupid goof who can't do things right LOL nonbenders, am i right guys?
>>79697836 Sokka and Bolin have absolutely nothing in common besides what the fandom makes up. Yeah they're both "the funny guys" but that doesn't exactly narrow things down, at the end of the day they're both pretty different guys.
>>79697848 >LOL nonbenders, am i right guys? Yep. Non-benders are boring as hell and are forever doomed in the setting because there will never be guns.
>>79697070 No it wasn't, it was first announced in 2010. They began hiring staff for the production in April, the original name "Avatar: Legend of Korra" was trademarked and leaked in May. The officially announced the Series in July.
>>79697553 They officially ordered The Legend of Korra as a miniseries. It would be one, 12-episode Season. This was all announced at SDCC 2010.
In 2011 it was announced that the title had been changed to The Legend of Korra and that the premiere would be delayed until 2012. In March 2011 it was revealed an extra 14 episodes were greenlit.
After Book 1 did so well, they added 26 more episodes.
>>79697937 >besides what the fandom makes up. Sokka is the comedy relief in ALTA. So is Bolin in LoK. That's not some tinfoil nonsense. That's objective truth. They serve the same character function in their respective series.
>>79698057 Why the fuck can't the shitty writers come up with new characters?
Did somebody else write Varrick's character or something? Or was he a fluke? Did they just ACCIDENTALLY write someone unique and entertaining while ever other character was a cardboard cutout and/or ripoff?
>>79698063 Ah, when I said boring I meant they aren't very interesting to watch fight, not that they as characters are boring. As scary as Amon was, I don't think he ever had a real fight before the finale.
>>79698104 Varrick is such a good character mainly because he seems to operate outside the confines of the universe. He's a douchey villain who never really gets punished for anything but he is strangely charming. He is what happened when they gave up on the idea that Bolin would be Sokka 2.0
Sokka was flippant, sarcastic, and generally made light of very serious situations. Bolin was this exact same fucking character-type. Even their pattern of speech and delivery of jokes is the same type.
Varrick on the other hand is a totally different type of humor. He's like a mad scientist who's too rich to actually have to worry about the science. He's selfish, not really caring about profiting off others, or ordering around Zhu Li. He talks incredibly quickly and often is bizarre analogies.
If you seriously think Bolin isn't "Sokka: But Worse Edition" you're fucking wrong.
