SJW as its used here can be seen as more of a blanket term, covering shows that focus more on sending a political message rather than being just fun and entertaining with a sense of normalcy. steven universe is a prime example of this: fat acceptance, LGBT shit, genderqueerness, crossdressing, designated shitting girlfriend, burger king kids club cast of friends, mostly strong women and useless or retarded men. there are very few themes in that show that fall to the norm, maybe greg/rose. by association it also extends to the myth that a cartoon cannot be good unless it features some deep and "epic" storyline to the point where any episode that is just raw fun is regarded as filler and a waste of time.

star is a welcome breathe of fresh air from this. it has an overlying plot, but its more the exception than the rule and episodes that dont necessarily advance the plot in any way can be seen as good. there is a diverse cast, fat kids and nerdy kids and normal kids. the only villainous girl around marco's school is a snobby asian chick. marco is not incompetent, in fact, hes often times been shown to be just as able to hold his own the same level as star but without magic. though its clear star and her people are oppressors, its both played for laughs and touched upon seriously without sending some sort of hamfisted "evil white people" message like SJW universe would.

Marco's acceptance of Star and his character growth as a modern young male is great. Especially with the SJW mad relationship world playing out in the background and Marco trying to tune it all out. Marco has "feminine" traits that can give a wrong impression about him being an insecure pussy, because deep down he is capable of being a badass. But he first needs to be triggered, and in some instances learn how to cope with the world around him. Star acts as the trigger in part by subjecting him to emasculating treatment, while also pushing and testing him to go further, and Marco doe change as a result of Stars feedback. But she is still skilled in subtle manipulation.

But ultimately I find it telling that Marco's first criticism of Toffee was that he was boring after being called a disappointment. That is telling of what happened after the precious cinnamon roll hung out with Star too much, He does not want to go back to his old boring life before Star, and she helped him realize this.
