It's a little early to tell.
It's not just the one animal, there are a lot of general spooky happenings that seem to be attracted to him.
Bunnicula seems to want to not only protect his owner from any actual harm, but also from being frightened. The second part of the episode, the cat moved Bunnicula into action by saying that the spooky happenings would "scare" Mina, not hurt her, he just said "scare". And the thought of her being afraid was apparently enough for Bunnicula to move her away from the happenings. So it would seem that while the animal isn't always the cause of the weird shit, he does actively keep his owner from seeing any of it.

But again, it's a little early to tell.

THIS. Fucking THIS post sums it up. The concept in and of itself just isn't interesting even if it followed the books to a T. Bunnicula's concept is just as uninteresting as Rare's Dinosaur Planet. Even if that game's concept was respected and developed as intended it doesn't erase how uninteresting it really is. As a result it would gain no traction and just be forgotten (aka fail).

It starts off with Chester and Harold already being acquainted with Bunnicula, so already the first episode doesn't actually feel like a first episode. The book was appealing because it had a sense of mystery to it. Chester and Harold slowly begin to notice that there's something off about the bunny, and there's some funny shenanigans that go on with them solving the mystery, but this is essentially just a dull monster of the week cartoon with a wild card character that makes annoying babbles. He generally fucks things up at first, but saves the day in the end while Chester and Harold flail about. Oh and there's a girl too, but she doesn't do much of anything.

I loved these books as a kid. What is this shit.

First of all: never focus on the rabbit. The rabbit is just an Entity that lives in the house, kind of spooky and unknown.
This would have done better with a more realistic art style. The cartoon style doesent gel with the books original spooky yet harmless atmosphere.
Also, Harold was smart yet easygoing. Making him stupid is a fucktarded decision. He needed to be smart, because if he wasn't holding Chester back, Chester might have actually hurt the bunny.
Making them both ineffectual ruins that.

When I read the book the best part, for me at least, was the mystery. I was a kid at the time, but was old enough to have read other books and seen countless episodes on TV with the morale "don't judge a book by it's cover", "people who seem weird or even evil can be nice" or, my favorite, the "everything has a logical explanation" routine.
But with that book I wasn't so sure. I kept trying to predict the "it was just your imagination/monsters aren't real/don't judge someone without knowing them" ending, but kept asking myself "could this really be a vampire bunny?"

Of course, that was all a long time ago, and I was a kid, so I may just be looking back with rose-tinted lenses. But still, a little mystery would be nice.
It would also just work better as a story. The first episode of the show was full of Chester just spewing exposition: "If I want to lock up Bunnicula the rabbit who is a vampire I will need Mina's key because that was the key she used to unlock the strange crypt inside the cellar some time ago from which Bunnicula came".
It was just really awkward storytelling.
