Roman was going through his monologue and being incredibly negative on just about everything in general; his future, everyone else's future, the reality that the majority of heroes are all dead, in the history books and nothing more, etc. All that negativity is probably what tempted a Grimm to come on down.

It's not the worst death scene but the whole "Lie, steal, cheat, and survive!" bit makes me think they're going to pull something off where Roman lives, because the irony/joke of him saying that what he does best is survive just to die immediately after is so cliche and played out in all forms of media that I can't seriously believe even RT would go that route.

But when Ruby almost falls off and panics about nearly dying immediately a Nevermore breaks off and comes for her. Then when Roman goes on his negative tirade a Griffon breaks off and comes for him. Their spikes of negativity briefly lured the Grimm away from their main target.

Grimm are naturally predisposed to just attack humans on sight, but they're drawn to negative emotions. If there's a happy girl picking flowers in a field and a village of sadness they will probably end up ignoring the girl and rush to the negative emotion hotspot.

A concession, but as said before, Roman wasn't completely negative - sure, he went on about how all the heroes are dead the world's a mess, but he certainly seemed positive about his own prospects.

It could be a case of negativity doing him in, but even then it's incredibly convenient that one Grimm just happened to be nearby when he started monologuing.
