I remember when the complete fucking debacle of the arc with Becky's dad was going on, you had droves of people on /co/ submitting criticisms on the message boards, and probably less than 1 in 100 were ever approved to be posted. Hell even people from the comic's facebook were complaining about it.


This is the problem with writers like Willis. They treat any and all criticism (even constructive criticism) like it's a personal attack.

It's amazing how many of the comments are just repeating thing of "I want Mary grievously harmed/killed". All because she's willing to actually expose Ruth's incompetence/infringements if Ruth doesn't just leave her alone.

David Willis has stuck with the same cast of characters across four different comics. My theory is that each different character represents a different facet of David Willis' overall personality, similar to stories such as that in "Inside Out" where the five Emotions are literal personifications of their emotional concepts.

For example, I'd suggest that Daniel Walky is David Willis' idealization of himself, right down to the fact that the two share the same initials.
Another example: Dina is possibly a representation of Willis' latent Asperger's Syndrome, what with her obsession with dinosaurs and his obsession with Transformers.

I'd say that Mary is possibly representative of Willis' Christian upbringing, as you suggest. In Willis' simplification, there likely isn't much more to it than "I am Christian. If you are not Christian, then I do not like you." Or something along those lines.

Mary is mai willisfu, and I'm glad she's there to be a recurring antagonist. Without drama the strip's dull as dishwater. Not everything can be cute!

No, Mary is a decent villain (the only one in DOA so far) because she is somewhat competent and, contrary to what this person wrote, is not a complete mustache twirler despite Willis' best efforts to make her one (that will change soon enough because Willis but hey, enjoy it before he goes and ruins a good thing again). It seems like the majority of even the pro-trans side has no idea what gender dysphoria is. Most seem to think it means that if you want to do girly shit like wear dresses and be treated the way society treats women, which isn't the case at all and just pushes back gender equality by several decades by defining "male" and "female" by their stereotypical gender roles.
