>>79167378 Anybody notice his Joker voice is a little similar to Ledger's? Not enough to sound like an impression or anything, but both seem to kind of sound like the back of their throats are tightened. Leto has a little bit more of a lisp thing going in, though.
Really liking Leto's Joker so far. I think after Ledger people sort of gave the role a lot of mystique that it doesn't really need. "How could Leto possibly play the Joker? He's such a dark and complex character, no way he'll pull it off." People said shit like this, but the Joker isn't that complex, and Ledger's Joker was almost absurdly simply, no past, and no desires besides creating chaos. Leto's Joker looks like he's gonna be a lot more personal, rather than a concept.
The thing I'm most disappointed in is Harley's accent or lack thereof. I wish I knew what the logic behind it was since Margot did a pretty good Harley in Wolf of Wall Street. I hope it's not something dumb like the accent is too silly for this movie about tattooed murder clowns and crocodile men.
uh, Reddit is where they've elevated The Dark Knight to Citizen Kane status and Ledger's Joker is known as the single greatest film performance. Where they came of age fetishizing TDK as cinema's highest achievement. Leto will blow him the fuck out over the course of multiple films and give us the definitive cinematic Joker. Morrison's Thin White Duke of Death realized.
>>79167492 High-pitched, constantly-giggling looniness hasn't been scary since The Silence of the Lambs. Buffalo Bill and Hannibal Lecter both redefined what's considered genuinely frightening insanity, so it makes sense that whenever The Joker isn't a cartoon they play up the lines where he ISN'T cackling or screaming.
>>79173582 I hope so. The variety of stories is what makes the comic universes interesting in the first place. I don't like the homogenized greyish blob that MCU has become. It's a shame- I was rooting for them for a long time
>>79168855 It also love looks like we are getting the Clown Prince of Crime with the bright Pink Lamborghini. I also think he will become the definitive Joker. He called Grant Morrison for hell's sake.
>>79176474 I like how the TDK one is kind of highly abstracted. You can reduce it to two black circles and a red line and it's instantly recognizable.
I don't wanna use the word "iconic," because a lot of the time, we throw that word around post-hoc at anything that has become familiar to us and that we're used to. But the symbolism in the Ledger Joker is pretty tight.
>>79176474 How can you compare them TDK is so much better I wasnt a fan of the heath ledger jokers appearance at first (especially the scars) But this new thing is terrible i mighy have been able to forgive the tattooos except damaged across his forehead which is retarded but those teeth are too much It's really too bad too becuase without the face tattoos and the teeth jared leto could be a pretty spot on joker
I don't mind the look of the new Joker THAT much yet. I like how he looks like a creepy clown toy almost. Jack Nicholson just looked like a normal guy in clown makeup, Heath Ledger looked like a crackhead, Jared Leto actually looks like a clown so far IMO. I do admit that I'm not a fan of the tattoos though, if they were cool tattoos then I wouldn't mind them as much, but his current ones are just so fucking bland. Not sure how I feel about the metal teeth yet. Maybe the teeth will be a good replacement for Ledger's scar smile, or maybe it will just make him look like a stupid gangster, not sure. Overall, I think it all depends on how well Leto plays the character. There's things I like and don't like about the design so far. I do have high hopes since he looked pretty cool in the new trailer, well at least better then he did in the first trailer.
>>79177056 Leto looks like Die Antword meets Batman, but DKR Joker's plan having no plausibility at almost any part is still worse. Good acting can't save a bad script.
I also can't stand the fact he was not frightening, and only funny by mistake. The bomb and the dress was not a Joker gag, it was just something he didn't think about that the audience saw and found amusing.
>>79177131 On the contrary, I believe good acting can make a bad script bearable. It's fun to watch the actors try to play the parts. If it's a movie with a good script and bad actors, I think "why didn't I just read the comic?"
>>79177081 >Maybe the teeth will be a good replacement for Ledger's scar smile, or maybe it will just make him look like a stupid gangster Ah, I finally nailed down why I don't like Leto's Joker.
He just looks like a kid. A young punk. He looks like he only became the Joker a month ago while going to college. Ledger Joker looked like an old fart, but he looked like he'd seen some shit. Nicholson looked like a gangster that had gone off the rocker. Leto just comes across as some undergrad who spent six months in Guantanamo and broke.
He could work in a Batman Year 1 story, but the DCAU is trying to hit the ground running and take place in a world that's been putting up with crazy shit for a while now. and in such a case you would expect Joker to be a veteran supervillain by now but Leto still looks green behind the ears, no pun intended.
>>79177165 Exactly Jared leto could have been a perfect joker he has the right look but they added pointless things that ruined it i could even tolerate a few tattos on his body like the dead bird on his arm which im pretty sure is for when he killed robin but the facial tattos especially damaged across the foeehead is ridiculous and goes completely against the jokers character in his eyes its all a big game hes having fun he knows he is different and even that people will call him crazy but he would never believe that he is damaged
>>79177322 The only way i can accept this joker is if its a variation of the red hood and its actually jason todd or atleast one of the previous robind i think that would work he would be more of a punk and more interested in tattoos and stuff It would even have a nice symbolism with the dead bird on his arm tattoo of robin is dead now he's the joker
The best way I saw someone say it was Leto is a modern updated version of the classic Joker that was "crazy clown gangster." The main thing being he's a modern day gangster with the tattoos and grills and what have you.
>>79177419 I also like his arm tattoo with the clown smile on it. You know how Batman sometimes covers the lower part of his face with his cape, well this feels like that's the Jokers response to that to mock Batman. Hell, I don't even mind the tattoos that say "hahaha". I really am not a fan of the other tattoos besides the bird one you mentioned.
Honestly I still think the tattoo's are a mistake, they're a design choice and I can go with that but at this point it's only because of how small they are.
If they were larger, like the "infamous" DAMAGED tattoo, it would be a bit of an improvement cause with most of the scenes we've seen him in he isn't exactly sitting still, it'll be next to impossible to even read half of them so why bother.
I can barely make out whats on his face in OP's pick.
>>79177406 But it does detract from the character. One of the best things about the joker is he is timeless. In 1940 he was a psychotic clown and he is a psychotic clown in 2016. But this version is too generation specific he looks like wannabe gangster with a clown theme in 2016 and in 2046 He will look like a wannabe gangter with a clown theme
>>79177081 >Jack Nicholson just looked like a normal guy in clown makeup, > Jared Leto actually looks like a clown so far IMO.
What, pray tell, is the difference between looking like a person in clown makeup, and looking like a clown. Who the fuck do you think is under clown makeup?
>>79177131 >I also can't stand the fact he was not frightening, and only funny by mistake. The bomb and the dress was not a Joker gag, it was just something he didn't think about that the audience saw and found amusing.
This Joker didn't, like, tell knock-knock jokes or something, but he was still funny enough to be The Joker in his mannerisms. Like, when he meets the mob, and Gambol is like, "you think you can steal from us and just walk?" and Joker just innocently says "yeah." Or the part in his semi truck where his driver gets knocked out, and Joker pushes him out of the way and is like "move over, I wanna drive." Just the way he delivers it is comic gold. Or what about "never start with the head..." or the magic trick?
I think a lot of the humour also just came from how Joker almost had a Looney Toons-esque nature to him, the way he'd constantly frustrate his pursuers, the way Bugs Bunny always gets the better of Yosemite Sam. Like, the sheer absurdity of that scene where he's dressed as the nurse, and despite the fact that it's a shoddy disguise and he's clearly The Joker, Dent doesn't recognize him until he pulls of the medical mask, at which point he starts freaking out. Like, in a cartoon, where a character wears those glasses with the nose and mustache or something. I think that was meant to be funny, but not everybody got that.
>>79177491 I only mentioned the bird becuase it was the only one i felt really added something but i dont hate some of the other ones he has frankly i could even live with the small J on his cheek (fingers crossed thats for Jason and this isnt the original joker)
>>79177081 Jokers teeth are metal because he's had them punched out and gotten his jaw broken several dozen times fighting Batman over the years. They're not supposed to be grills or anything like that, they're a replacement for the teeth he's lost.
I like the first Burton one and the first two Nolan ones.
Hell, I even like Returns and Rises. But with Returns, I recognize that it's a muddled narrative that just has some good stylistic and thematic stuff going for it, and with Rises, it has a lot of problems with internal logic and not developing some themes well, but it still functions as a pretty satisfying conclusion.
So yeah, overall, I'd say Batman has had it pretty good at the cinema.
>>79177633 How DOES Joker always manage to keep all his teeth? I remember in the Mask of the Phantasm movie, he lost one getting punched out by Bats, and then he had a full head of teeth again in all future appearances.
I mean, if you think about it, regardless of the continuity, it's a miracle that he always manages to keep his teeth. His teeth should just be entirely silver or gold in The Dark Knight Returns.
>>79171009 I wouldn't mind it if the tattoos weren't "this was picked out by my cousin in 7th grade" level of edgy. He's got a bunch of huge pieces and I can't imagine the Joker laying down for like 6 hours for any of them, especially since they're more like stupid makeup to say HEY LOOK GUYS I'M THE JOKER. I feel like it would make a lot more sense, if we were to have a tattooed Joker, for him to just have a bunch of random shit that he did himself, that only has meaning to him.
>>79177772 >personally i think it would be a nice twist Yeah i would think it was a nice twist too after ramming my skull repeatedly into a rusty metal pipe in my basement. Doesn't mean it would be a good twist though.
>>79178823 >>79178832 >The devils are girls with Van Gogh's missing ear >You say what you want but filth is all that they hear >I've got the jigger to make all you bigger >Ladies und gentlemen >So drop your pissroom mate, and make sure you're not late >You tramps and lunatics >Here's a trick that's gonna make you click
Here's the thing, "band of misfits and criminals who have to learn how to work together to save the world" is an old concept, and GotG is hardly the first to use it. In addition the settings are completely different, and the characters on said team in GotG aren't played to be the "worst of the worst" with rap sheets that include things like cannibalism. The team dynamics feel a lot different.
I hate the way a shit trailer can seem interesting just because of good editing with a really good song. It's deceptive and Jewish and I hate it and it'll probably be a good movie but stupid shit balls I think certain bands should not be allowed to have their music used for trailers.
>>79179175 Not too sure, but isn't the part with him holding electrodes when he meets Harley the first time or so? Should be before he kills Jason I would think and he already has the metal teeth then.
>>79178127 Yeah, everybody keeps on going, "But it's Bowie, tho!" and while I can kind of understand the Thin White Duke elements, overall, it's leaning WAY MORE in the Manson direction. It doesn't have that kind of aloof debonair of TWD-era Bowie.
>>79178252 The ink in the water is the colors of the shirts they were wearing. Joker had a pink shirt on when he jumped in and we've seen Harley with a blue shirt on in set photos. The colors bled out and died her hair.
>>79182919 >First part of the movie is Waller recruiting the characters >Second part Joker kidnap someone and Waller send the Squad to fight against him and his gang >Third part the main plot >Fourth part the end >Scott Eastwood is playing Robin who is send to Belle Reve to investigate Waller's actions >Katana is Flagg's bodyguard against the metas
>>79185229 Nah I can't. I honestly think the only thing about Joker I hate is the Damaged tattoo. The others I can live with. That Harley bit with the "voices" better not be in the movie, or transpire differently. Cara Delevigne or whatever is the most terrible thing about this movie in my opinion. Will Smith actually looks pretty badass doing that weird shooting pose with his monocle. Should be at least fun.
>>79168338 >Leto's Joker looks like he's gonna be a lot more personal, rather than a concept. Leto's Joker is reportedly set up as the Hannibal Lecter type, he'll provide intel and all. The Hannibal to negroess Clarice.
The Joker being a concept will still be there, if that is true.
>>79168338 >Really liking Leto's Joker so far. I think after Ledger people sort of gave the role a lot of mystique that it doesn't really need. "How could Leto possibly play the Joker? He's such a dark and complex character, no way he'll pull it off." How underage are you? don't you remember 2007? people were saying the same about ledger and jack.
>>79185705 >Perhaps they didn't want to make the characters seem like caricatures >in a movie where the Australian is a violent criminal, that drinks beer, and throws boomerangs I understand what you mean, but that's still a dumb statement.
>>79184108 There's silly looking, and then there's just plain dumb. Most versions of him, like his early days, have a refined look to him, while having odd colors and face paint which makes the whole thing look ridiculous and silly. Heck, even The Batman's version of Joker wasn't that bad, despite being more primal. This and faceless joker are just plain awful.
