No author worth his or her salt "avoids" tension. That's fucking asinine. If there is no tension, there is no story, period. You just have an inert sequence of meandering events. A story is built upon a continuous increase of tension until things reach a boiling point, culminating in the climax.

Tension can take a lot of different forms. It doesn't have to be as severe as a surprise murder; it can emerge from a simple offhand remark that sparks more conflict. But you can't do away with tension entirely, and immediately lopping off the tension from the end of the strip because "a bloo bloo bloo we can't have a character seem alone for literally one day" is beyond retarded.

I think Willis "hates" tension in the sense that he hates the character pets that the audience is supposed to sympathize with having to go through real, meaningful struggles that aren't instantly resolved.

It kinda bugs me how lately in webcomics when they have a trans character it's basically just a girl who says "Oh, I'm trans". I really don't have an issue with people who wanna transition. Literally no business of mine. But isn't it disingenuous to say "I support trans people" and only portray them looking exactly like chicks. Like yeah, there are some trans people who you wouldn't bat an eye at, but there are plenty of others where you're like "Yep, I can totally see that's a dude who's transitioning to a lady". If you're gonna handle a sensitive issue like this anyway, wouldn't you at least not want a character who, beyond hearsay doesn't look completely like a female? I haven't read most of the thread nor have I read Willis' stuff for well over a year, but this particular OP managed to catch my attention.

Conceptually, revealing that a character whose been around for a while is trans is a good way of having a trans character whose gender isn't the entirety of their character, but in practice Willis' characters aren't well defined enough for that to work. Maybe with any other author but I legitimately can't remember a single one of this character's character traits and I used to read Willis' work all the damn time

I feel like blaster nation doesn't really have "positive trans representation" in mind as one of its writing goals, though. Not to say Jenny is an offensive representation or anything - fucking far from that - but all the character from Fort Shadaloo seems to have started with the writer saying "here's some fun-loving but socially maladjusted dorks" and THEN saying "also one of them is black and one of them is trans" instead of say, Questionable Content or whatever Dumbing of Age where it's pretty clear they started from "here is the trans character."

Also from what I gather the Blaster Nation people aren't particularly concerned with the social justice stuff Jacques and Willis concern themselves with when writing. Which leads to a kind of funny situation where the people who aren't really concerned with "positive x representation" make more interesting "x" characters than the people who are, essentially, walking on eggshells.

This line of thinking is flawed, though. There's nothing wrong with starting at "I want to write a gay guy" and expanding off that. It's all in the execution and how much detail you add beyond the gayness.

I might have misspoken because I agree with you to an extent. I have no problem with writers setting out for positive representation of whatever group they feel needs it.

I just think it's amusing that Jacques and Willis are explicitly setting out to make positive trans characters and end up with kind of bland ones as a result of their fear of projecting any tangible flaws onto their token minority, wheras a comic that clearly has no real desire to make positive representation a writing goal has minority characters who are, arguably, a lot more interesting than Jacques' and Willis' by virtue of not being infallible people.

Well, wait. I'm writing a story right now featuring a bisexual character. It's pretty superfluous, I originally had him hitting on the protagonist as well as a female side character but ended up axing that because the whole "fuck anything that moves" angle on bisexuals is tired and stereotypical. Theoretically I could take it out. But why should I? I conceived of him as a bisexual, I decided I wanted to have a bi guy in the cast. I guess my issue is, whenever you write a character that diverges from "the norm" you risk that divergence being considered their only trait by a lot of people, even if you try to give the character more depth than that. Certain readers aren't going to see my AWOL sorcerer as a kind but cowardly figure who learns to value his comrades, they'll just see him as the Bi Guy and wonder why he had to be bi.

If that happens, I suppose it's on my writing more than it is on the audience, but I feel like a lot of people are very hard to please when it comes to this sort of thing, particularly the "did they have to be bi? Why did you bother making him bi if it's not one of the main drivers of the story?" reaction.
