Do you write/read fanfiction /co/?
>>
>>79130452
The last thread had a surprisingly good run, have to say.
>>
>>79130452
I do, and I do.
None of that Slash/Yuri/Yaoi/SuperWhoLocke Tumblr-tier shit though.
I usually get into reading totally original stories, or stories that are written by authors who have a well rounded understanding of what they're wading into.
>>
>>79130570
Yeah it was really good, lots of discussion about various tropes and fics. Pretty surprising to see that actually
>>
>>79131093

Does not compute.
>>
>>79131093

I once tried to write harry potte fanfiction when I was 14. I didn't know bether and made a Mary sue. She was so unlikable thay years later when I opened my ff.net account I cringed and killed her In the most horrible way. I haven't written it since

But I still read fanfiction. Mostly marvel. loki/sif is my guilty otp unfortunately
>>
Forgot to say in the last thread

To the author of >>79099126, it honestly wasn't as bad as you made it seem. I mean it's pretty bleedman-tier crossover shit, but it had some nice ideas.

6/10, would've been nice to see where it went.
>>
>>79131325
Yeah, Marvel is pretty much fanfiction at this point.

>>79130452
I didn't really do neither for a long while but am now writing one (The Helsa fic linked in the last thread), and actually have sort of avoided reading any since starting it since I'm afraid of picking up bad habits.

When I did skim through some fics, I noted that there seem to be certain expressions or phrases that I've never seen elsewhere but are ubiquitous in fanfics for that fandom. Like using "orbs" for eyes or referring to a person by the hair colour.

It's sort of interesting, and also gets old really fast.

People who read fanfics, are there such staple phrases in your fandoms too?
>>
>>79130452
I mentioned in the beginning of the last thread that me and my gf read it together. Really, just about random pairings that catch our eyes. We read a lot of FitzSimmons fanfics together, but we've been reading Edd x Marie, Venom Snake x Quiet, Chris x Ashley from Until Dawn, Batman x Catwoman, etc. Some of them are actually pretty good.

I wrote edgy darkfic for anime when I was in middle school and haven't tried writing since, but I have a few ideas so when I get a new laptop I may try and get back into that. My writing can't be worse than a lot of the purple prose out there.

I mostly read it for the smut and have only gotten back into reading story/romance driven ones recently. I forgot how fun it can be.

>>79131457
I mean, I think I manage to accomplish that in my own writing. At least I hope so. The settings I write in are somewhere between their source material and a porn set. Where every woman is just a little bisexual, and every guy can cum on command.

The only character I think I've "bashed" is Mary Jane, and that was more neglect than anything else. Although she did die. Hm.

At last, my tests are nearly done, and I can do that Gravity Falls one-shot I've wanted to do for a while now.

Which reminds me:

>That fanfic where Mabel died of cancer in Dipper's arms, reminiscing about the good times they had together and growing up, before cutting forward to Dipper's daughter at her aunt's graves, asking her father why her name is the same as the one on the stone.

>>79131223
Totally original stories, as in, Batman stranded on Mars, instead of retelling the time Batman punched that one guy in the face lots of times.

Stories that smash the walls that keep a character bound to a certain setting, time period, or formula. In some cases, just the names are borrowed, everything else about the character is altered. Fanfiction takes on many forms, what I define as totally original are stories that don't build off of what's already been done.

>>79131242
I tend to lean toward DC Fanfiction, Star Wars, Power Rangers, DIsney Princesses, and from time to time I endulge my inner weaboo and read some anime based Fanfiction.

Nothing about sex though, sex scenes always read like the author is having cybersex with themselves.

Then again, for some of them cybersex might have been the only experience with sex they've ever had.. So.. Ick..

I will say that my stories are never based on "Oh, I think X and Y would make a great pairing!" It's more about how that particular setting and fictional elements would help initiate sex.

Like the symbiote bonding with Black Cat and feeding off of her "sexual energy," Supergirl finding herself, sexually, and struggling to find a mate that she wont pulverize, or Rogue exploring her sexuality through becoming a webcam girl since skin to skin contact is out of the question.

http://www.hentai-foundry.com/user/TheDjinn/profile I'm always looking for more feedback. I'm a whore that runs on attention.

I think it must be some kind of laziness? Or lack of imagination? It's easier to place the story in a familiar environment you frequent, and the high school dynamic with it's social customs if easy and familiar for most writers, I suppose. Whereas if you'd place the story in-universe or in a fantastic world, you'd have do more background work to make sure you have the details and customs right, or go through the trouble of making them up.

is father hulk here? I think I need a sin smashed.

no less than an hour ago I came up with a setup for a Brendan/Aisling smut fic based around Aisling goading Brendan into doing her on the grounds that she's a fairy and her very existence disproves Brendan's christian views, therefore he no longer has to live by monk rules, or something.

I write and read, but pretty much exclusively video-game related. I primarily do Fire Emblem-related stuff. Honestly, it's good practice. Started when I was fifteen, wrote MK/Avatar crossover. Too lazy to continue it, but came back four years later, started fresh. All crossover stuff, of course - there's a childish novelty/cool factor to it I can't ignore. But comparing my current writing with 2010 writing, there's an alarming difference.
>>
I'm not sure if it's ingenious or fucking lazy, but I read a Pokémon fanfic following Red deciding to climb down from Mt Silver and go through the new regions after beating the E4 again.
But the thing was, Red was written as completely silent, save for a few attacks ordered.
I wish there were more like that, or at least that it would update.

>>79135938
I think that this is a really important aspect most LoZ fics ignore as well.

I read fanfic every now and then of the romantic/smutty/homo variety. I even wrote some about a year ago and it was fairly well-received. I've been mulling over continuing it for shits, but I know it wasn't very good. I'd probably have to start drinking again to get anywhere.

That's 50s Batman in a nutshell. During that period he was traveling to other dimensions and alien worlds.

>A GF Pirate AU

Fucking why? You can do almost anything you want with the setting. Just have some magical crap happening in the woods, and there's the story, without any of this leap of setting bullshit.
>>
Fanfic is worthless garbage. It's masturbation, either intellectual (Mary Sue self-inserts) or physical (shipping, sex fantasies).

Not only is it shit, as others have noted it's lazy shit, just the same old AU settings, tropes, etc.

I really seriously think fanfiction stunts people and the culture in general. Instead of making new, ACTUALLY original stories you're just playing with the toys someone else made. It's just channeling people's natural creativity into these narrow little boxes.

If someone is capable of writing "good" fanfic, then write your own original damn stories and actually contribute to the world.
>>
>>79138374

My fanfic is devoid of self-inserts (hell, I think most writers are pretty paranoid of this happening) anything lewd, AUs, bashing, shipping, etc.

I write fanfic of my favourite shows because I LIKE DOING IT. You can say that original stories are good, and they are, but ultimately, I write because I like doing it, and when I'm writing about a show I already love, I love to write about it. My primary purpose in life is to have fun, so I'm doing that, not being ashamed of things I like.
>>
>>79138589
I write Simpsons fanfiction from time to time just to stick it to the writers and prove that Zombie Simpsons sucks so much that we could make better stuff than the crap they pull from their butts.
>>
>>79138589
Have you ever tried writing your own stuff?

Do what makes you happy, sure, but just think if the creators of your favorite show wasted their energies on fanfic and never made the show you love. The world would be poorer for it, right? Maybe you could bring something into the world that could inspire and move people like your favorite shows inspires and moves you.
>>
Sometimes I dabble, but it's only for 3edgy shit or if I crave a pairing that has no/complete shit fics for it. (Most m/m or het)
Otherwise I vastly prefer RPing. It feels a lot less like angrily jerking off in an empty room.
>>
I read and have written some fanfiction. I usually look for slash smut and I don't like reading pairings established in canon. Slow burns are good but I aldo like ones have sex throughout with the characters denying there feelings.

Like a lot have others have said it's really hard to find a good fanfiction and aldo can't stand the highschool AU and other tropes in fanfiction. As a slash fan I tend to avoid ones with seme/uke descriptions, since its usually a signal for bad yaoi tropes in the fic and I prefer switches.
Still even though I've stopped (I'm writing an original work right now so I can't divert my focus) I do get the urge to write more from time to time.
>>
>>79139014

Yes, when I was 14 I wrote a 150,000 word novel that I intended to make into a trilogy. Problem is that it took so long to make that the political values it espoused I'd 180'd on, and I kind of like to forget it happened. Never made the other two books.

Fan-fic is what got me back into writing, but I still do some poetry on the side.
>>
>>79138374

Calm down senpai. No one is writing fan fiction because they think it's some kind of intellectual medium.
It's either porn, which is always welcome, or it's an attempt to expand on characters/situations that don't happen in canon.
Which is especially awesome if the source material is meh-tier. One of my favorite series back in MS/HS was pretty bland and my favorite character got no screen-time. Fics actually developed the characters better than the original.

And why can't you do both? Most people who are serious about writing actually do more than just fan-work.
>>

I used to write fanfic back in the day. Some of it was cringe-worthy self insert bullshit, but other stuff was slice of life/ day in the life of minor characters, esp minor villainous characters.

I actually do like reading fanfic too, but I'm so picky that I've given up on trying to read most of it. Characters acting ooc? Dropped. Terrible dialogue / grammar? Dropped. Hamfisted romance? Dropped. When it's good, it's really good. When its bad, it's just awful. And it doesn't even need to be said what the majority of fanfic is.

It's too bad though, because I really do miss it.

I don't suppose anybody has recommendations for a WiR fic where Felix is an evil control freak? I've been toying with that idea for a while and can't be assed to search through 50 pages of turbo wankery in search of a fic where he just doesn't play that big of a role, and it's just fixit that's a douche.

I write graphic rape fapfiction. Got a fairly large following on Ao3. My most popular fic has 500 kudos. My reviewers are super flattering and positive. People write stuff like they thought something was so well written it really stuck with them and made them emotional, or that I'm their favourite fapfic writer and they like reading my stuff before going to bed. Really nice comments that boost my confidence.

But the shame... The shame anons. I can't admit it to anyone. Not my friends who even read porn fanfiction. I feel like such a fraud or something, sitting and listening to them discussing fic and trying to write their own while pretending I don't do any of that stuff at all. I also feel slightly disgusted with myself. People have always said I write really well and I should write some stories, and then I go and make this sort of shit? It's something I'm going to take to my grave probably...
>>
Does it count as fanfiction if I basically plagiarize the plot of Silent Hill 4: the room, writing it in the style of a bunch of diary entries?
>>
>>79139894

>>
>>79140075

Self-Insert is pretty self-explanatory. You put a character into a story (or alter the personality of an existing character) to do or say exactly what you would do.

Technically, every character in all media has elements of self-insert, but in terms of Fanfiction, "self-insert" usually refers to a kind of obnoxious character who hogs the spotlight and makes it pander to the authors personal views or desires for the franchise.
>>
>>79139856

This is only technically related to fanfiction, but today I was faced with a dilemma, /co/.

More than a year ago I started writing a fanfiction, mostly as an exercise in discipline; I update every week, tuesday, between 3-5 pm, like clockwork. I've only ever missed an update because FF.net was down, and I have a good number of fans that follow my weekly updates.

Today it came time to post my weekly chapter, but I absolutely fucking hated the ending. I'd psted work I was unsatisfied with before, but usually in unimportant chapters: this one was a key moment for the narrative, and I hate that I couldn't get it right. I'd rewritten it a dozen times over but still wasn't happy, and I was out of time. I decided to post it anyway to keep up my regular schedule.

Did I do the right thing? Should I have chosen professional or artistic integrity?
>>
>>79141260
Oh, but I think I got into by reading really bad Naruto fic on ff.net.

I can't bring myself to post material I'm not satisfied with. If I cringe at it even once, it goes in the trash. Which is why i never finish anything or update very often.... Keeping up a consistent update schedule is also an art, so if that's what your main objective is, don't feel bad about it.

I have a few journals of a single fanfic of Code Lyoko that never made past the first chapter. I kept rewriting it, for my whole sophomore year. It was tedious as fuck, and I never liked how I expressed what was going on.
I remember it being about a those kids being collage or young adult and having that Lyoko machine slowly come back to life.

Besides that, I use to read a shit ton Lyoko fanfic since the show went to shit after a few seasons.

I once read a Drake and Josh story where Megan stepped up her game and actually tried to kill Drake and Josh. Her first attempt was getting them in a car accident which they survived. The second I think is when she upright killed Drake. I forgot how(although I remember this one crazy scene when they tried to fight her off by kicking her in the breast and them commenting that's like kicking a man in the balls and that's what she gets). Anyways, It ended with Josh snapping and knocking Megan out than he ties her up in the attic and tortures her(beating her, threatening her with a loaded gun, drowning her, killing one of her friends right in front of her, hammering a nail in her ear), it ends with him hacking her the pieces with an Axe. The final scene is him leaving the attic where his parents come, Josh has already lost his sanity so he shots them and than the police instantly come knock the door down on top of him. When that happens Josh instantly regrets what he's done and shoots himself in the mouth.

And that's how it ended. Fucked up shit. Too bad it's deleted. Because I would link it.

one of the best fanfics I've ever read was a post-game Twilight Princess fic about Link travelling the world pining for Midna and Shadow Link getting revived.

Within it Link was willfully mute. There was a fantastic scene where, I think it was the barmaid, was watching Link interact with people, and the thought came into her head that maybe the reason Link never talks is because he already conveys so much through body language, that he doesn't talk because then he wouldn't have any secrets left, he'd express himself so openly people would be able to see right through him, and that scared him.

I've been trying to find that fic again for years as reference for writing my own mute character but I've never been able to track it down.

I'm thinking of having it be a mixed bag. Have the first chapter be the start of the origin story, then jump ahead to his first night out. have him develop a grudge against the first villain then jump back to the second part of the origin, then jump ahead to him making friends with the other local supers and making headway against the organized crime. Jump back to the part that ties the origin to his first night out then jump back ahead to him actually taking down the first villain. then the rest of the story moves linearly from there.

I'm someone who plans his shit out meticulously, but writing is still an organic process. If you plan on uploading shit as you go, do a few 'pilot chapters', sit on them for a week, then go back and review them. if you like 'em, do a few more and now you have a buffer. If you don't, go back to the drawing board.

If you plan on doing the whole thing and publishing the finished product, just write and don't sweat it. You may find yourself jumping all around the manuscript and that's fine so long as you still keep approaching that ending.

He dons some dark clothes and heads out at night. Years of police work make it fairly easy to get around on the city's roof tops. He steaks out in the bad part of town like that for few nights, until he overhears a few thugs talking about a meeting with 'the new boss' somewhere in the docks area sometime during the next weekend. He follows one of the thugs and approaches the guy in a bar. Now, Underhill is a pretty intimidating guy. 6'4, black, and built from his training, it wasn't hard for him to convince the gangster that he overheard he was with the gang and that he was looking to join in on the drug running business. The guy is a little bit skeptical, but tells him that there's going to be a sort of initiation/gladiatorial combat arena thing coming up at a warehouse down by the docks. The bosses way of showing new recruits exactly what was expected of them. Under hill shows up in gang colors to see exactly what he was dealing with. His plan was to call some of the cops he knew were trustworthy once he'd found out where the gang was meeting, but he didn't know exactly how big this thing was going to be and didn't want to send his friends into something that would get them killed. So he went into the warehouse just to see all who showed up. First villain makes an appearance as the gang boss, and when Underhill realizes he a super, sees that he's gotten in a little over his head. He tries to make his way out, but as chance would have it the gangster that had been sprung after the failed drug bust spots and recognizes him. He calls him on being a cop and Underhill is captured. They break his legs and leave him tied up in one of the gang's safe houses' basement. They decide to put him up for ransomed and he's left down there for three days. He manages to MacGyver his way free, knocks out the guard that was watching him, and uses the guards cellphone to call in his cop buddies on the safe house. Cont.

It's one of the biggest blows against the gang the police have manged in a long time, but Underhill's legs are jank, ending his career as an officer. over the next few weeks his life pretty much goes to shit. The gang knew his name and face, so he had to go into hiding for a while. He was staying with his sister who lived just outside town. First villain apparently held a stronger grudge than the thought, and sent one of his lieutenants to burn the house down. His sister died in the fire, and he was left with newly broken legs and nothing really left to live for. this made him a perfect candidate for a group called the New Salem Project. Back during WWII the German's had the Thule Society. This being a super hero setting they were actually somewhat successful and a legitimate threat to America. As such America had they're own group to study magic and implement it on the battle field. The New Salem Project was technically disbanded after the war, but enough higher ups were interested in their work that they still found the funding to keep doing their research, albeit in the shadows where know one could see what they were up to. They take people who are otherwise as good as dead and offer them a second chance as their magic guinea pig. Underhill accepts, as most do, and becomes the primary tester for the phantom cloak project, alongside Carl Sweiggen. He'll be important later. The cloak is a magical artifact that NSP found in some crypt. Supposedly it belonged to some legendary thief back in feudal times. The cloak allowed the thief to become intangible, invisible, and to float through objects. the biggest problem the NSP had was the the cloak was somehow attached to the soul of the thief. To anyone else it was just a white cloak. They placed some runic tattoos directly on Underhill's heart, that would trick the cloak into thinking he was the thief. They also fixed his legs while they were at it. Magic. Ain't gotta explain shit. cont.?

Its weird, fanfiction to me seems like its really hard to spot readers and authors. Nobody I know really discusses it online or off.

Well, you're an idiot then. It's not really up to you to decide what sort of content creative people should be allowed to use, or what sort of stories or methods of publishing count as "real". Fanfiction gives joy to the people who write and read it, it's enough.

It's also an excellent way to get into writing.

Yeah most fanfiction is fine where it is now. I almost think there should be a quest thread board however since that is what the majority of /tg/ threads are now.

Self-insert is a character who sort of represents you, or you identify with them, or write them as this wishful fantasy of how awesome it would be if these things were happening to you (and you were hotter and thinner and fit and popular and had an interesting name).

It's a little different from a Mary Sue (boringly perfect), but they often overlap into self-insert Mary Sues since if you're going to write yourself into the story under a different name, might as well make yourself awesome.

I think cherryviolets does a series of fanart based in a 1920/30s prohibition setting. I'm not sure how it would work as fiction but the art is great. it's like she binged Lackadaisy and GF at the same time and a whole lot of cool art came out of it.

>Totally original stories, as in, Batman stranded on Mars, instead of retelling the time Batman punched that one guy in the face lots of times.
Mah fucking nigga
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who appreciates those kind of stories.

I think that fanfiction has a lot bigger potential than people give it credit for. If someone devotes himself to expand a universe he loves and puts some real thought into it, the story will end up being a really nice expansion to the established canon of said universe.
And while each of those kind of stories are noteworthy achievements, I think the real potential lies in stories that try not to be an expansion, but a new entry in that universe. I'm talking about original stories that are bound to the core elements of established universes.
Take digimon for example. Even though every digimon series(Adventure/02/Tri, Tamers, Frontier, Savers, Xros Wars) is different from each other, all of them share some core elements: a universe that contains digimon, digimon-human interaction (bonding, conflicts, etc.), digimon specific combat (evolution, joggress, etc.), a bigger than life threat, believable real world as a setting, an alternate world where the digimon come from, factions. If someone does decide to write something completely new digimon related, sticks to those core elements and brings something original and interesting to the table, then he has done something amazing.
This is the true potential of fan work and I think it's a real shame that most writers just stick to smutshit and don't even want to try to reach it, or at least make a good expansion.
>>

>>
>>79150547
Advertise at /sug/ or even at r stevenuniverse , try to arrange a fic crit exchange, where you read and critique someone's stuff and they do the same to you.

Getting good feedback is hard though. From the normal readership audience, all the feedback tends to be ultraturbopositive due to the tumblr sjwish attitudes prevalent in the fanfic scene, stating that being anything but supportive is being an ableist hater or whatever.

Of course, considering that everyone writing tends to be an amateur which is obvious in the quality of the prose, it'd be awful for all the teenage wannabe authors if people would deal out actual critique, and sure it's great that people are encouraged to write and no-ones perfect when they're starting out or young etc. I get it.

But still, I feel the blind praise maybe sometimes keeps people from developing, because writing predicatable smut-fluff with jewel-toned orbs, burning cores and breaths they didn't know they were holding gets OMG THIS IS BETTER THAN PUBLISHED BOOKS YUO ARE A GODDESS tier rave reviews - so it's easy to stagnate and keep doing what you know, instead of trying something new and risk not getting your praise fix.

And also it can make people unwilling to listen to anything even remotely critical, even if there'd be a good reason for it.

(delete-edit since I effed up the spoilers like a retard)

Yeah, that's probably why they're so prevalent. People write what they know.

ff.net for some reason only allows the one empty line. I think it's due to people abusing blank space in their fics in the past.

The only thing I've thought of is putting a small mark, like . at the start of the line, then changing the paragraph again, so you'd get

.

this kind of space, which you can continue if you need the room. Or sometimes I've centred the period, or something.

-Shinji and Wharhammer 40k: best Evangelion fic togheter with Shinji and the Doctor. Sadly, the author is now rewriting the fic instead of pulling out other chapter. He doesn't even do that on fanfiction.net, or on another fic website, but on a fucking forum; it's barely readable
- Harry Potter and the Natural 20:honestly, I think the author just died.

Fanfic are like non-canon comics, a whole diverse range of people are writing about characters in already established continuities, like Marvel and DC, most of the original writers to most characters are dead, so we have people like Moore, Johns, Morrison, Loeb, etc. writing those characters instead, everything has been done before so nothing is original, mate.

I wrote a fanfiction about Captain America fighting in WWII.

He doesn't f Nazi Super Science or Red Skull, in fact he's the only super human in the world. He's sent to Italy to help break the stalemate at Anzio.

Throughout the course of the story, he realizes how, even with all his agility, strength and combat prowess, he's unable to make a big change in the course of the war because it's just too big.

He also becomes more isolated and disconnected from the men he's fighting alongside with, because they not strong or fast enough to keep up with him, and they die much easier than he can.
Coupled with the fact that his mind is not invulnerable to the effects of PTSD, he becomes more irrational and mentally unstable the more he stays in the fight.

I haven't finished it, nor have I showed it to anyone. I think I need to do more research on the battle of Anzio before I progress further on it.

>>oh look its the genderbent omega high school orphans outer space pirates personality swap au

Never understood the appeal of this. If you change the environment and characters themselves so much they don't even resemble anything in the source material, why write fanfics at all?

I can understand AU's like 'what if The Avengers were vampires!?' but making them teenagers, completely changing their personalities around and putting them in the 1800 century on top of that? Man, just write your own characters then.
>>
>>79134184

They definitely did, but it's more focused on the point that Cap thinks he can have a bigger effect on the war than he actually does and the Army is holding him back.

Basically his power makes him egotistical.

The problem I always had with smutfics is that it seems like the author is having cybersex with himself.

Left 4 Dead fanfiction adaptation, and it's sequels.
Starts off adapting original game, but as time goes on adds on some original stuff; yet by that time it feels earned, and it never goes that far out of the realm of possibility. Author also stopped updating at the exact moment it might have jumped the shark.

I still really enjoy reading fanfiction though- I'm not a fan of AUs or crossovers at all, I really enjoy seeing people take a world and adding more depth to something I already love. If it's OOC or set in a highschool for no reason, I really don't see the point of it being fanfiction- seems more like a lazy writer who doesn't want to have to explain their characters and environment.

Sonic the Hedgehog ran very quickly down the hall to where the fire was coming from. While running he ducked into a rolling spin and made a sound like "@@@@@@@!" so he could dodge the fireball lasers.

At the top of the staircase he stood up and shouted at the top of the staircase "Sephiroth!" The man with long hair turned slowly and with a flash of his sword removed Sonic's nipples from his body.

"OUCH that hurts1" cried Sonic, hurting. "Looks like I will need the power of the CHAOS CRYSTAL for this opponent!" and he raised up a handful of glowing gems.

The light from the jewels summoned all the legendary pokemon in the world together and they fused together into a Pyschic Ghost Dragon Pokemon. "LEAVE THIS TO ME, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!" it said in the voice a thousand monsters, and shot a giant Hadouken at Sephiroth.

Sephiroth bounced it back with a spin of his blade, and it hit the Psy-Gho-Dra-Mon in the face, crashing him to the floor and half-crushing No-Nipples Sonic. "This is bad!" said Half-Dead No-Nipples the Hedgehog. "It looks like we will need to call for that man, Psyghodramon!"

>>
>>79162148
"YES" he agreed, and used his 7 physic goat dragon balls to make a wish "SEND US THE CHOSEN HERO OF PROPHECY!" as Sephiroth slowly descended to finish them off.

Just then a bright light from the sky shone, and the Grand Master John Su descended from the moon on rocket powered rocket boots, with a beautiful woman on each arm. When he landed, there was a chorus and fanfare of trumpets, and he lowered his sunglasses and said "Yo."

"Who are you" said Sephiroth as he threw a ninja star at light speed at John Su. John Su turned and winked at the star, and the bright light instantly dissolved it into space dust. "Pretty good," said Sephiroth, "but your still gonna loose!" and he transformed into Super Saiyan 4 Sephiroth.

"Take this!" he screamed as he flew towards John Su. John Su flexed a single muscle, generating an awesome MANWAVE that overpowered Super Sephiroth and sent him flying into space, frozen forever in defeat.

"Thank you for saving us, John Su" said the world. "You are so strong and cool"

"I know," he replied, and jumped back up to the moon after resurrecting the 4th Hokage.

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them, now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships, daddy."
Dad said "NO! YOU WILL BE KILL BY DEMONS!"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson," the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US," said the demons!
"I will shoot at him," said the Cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons," he shouted!
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a Zombie.

I remember I went to a seminar where a guy who wrote scripts for TV shows told us about his career.

When he was asked how people can get on TV shows, he said the best thing is to just watch the show you want to work for, understand all the characters and their motivations, make up a script for an episode and send it to the production company.

So basically he told everyone that if you write really good fanfiction that isn't OOC, and can put it into script form, you can be a TV show writer.

That's because modern fanfiction more or less began with Jane Austen novels.

I used to write fanfiction. I feel kind of bad about it, but not for the reasons I think most people would.

I put a lot of effort into it, as weird as that sounds. I'd go over almost every line making sure it sounded perfect. Writing a single chapter would take fucking forever because of how many times I'd proofread and edit it. I had this whole long story planned out, and knew exactly where things would go and had the pacing and events all planned out.

I ended up writing about ten chapters and stopped. I feel bad because there was this small group of people that actually liked the story a lot, but I haven't updated in at least a year. It just took more time and effort than I can justify putting into fanfiction, but if I didn't put that much work in I'd feel bad about what I'm putting out.

Sometimes I wonder if I should just add a chapter saying that the story isn't going to update again, but then I wonder if it'd be better to just let it fall into the abyss than to get someone's hopes up just to see the story is cancelled.

Maybe this is smug but I think it wasn't popular just because it was an adventure/comedy story instead of yaoi shipping.

I don't think Elsanna is at all the largest, they're just the loudest and most fanatic. So their presence in the online bastions of fandom like fanfiction sites, tumblr or reddit may seem very high, but it doesn't mean they'd actually be the majority.

Heck, if I remember correctly it's Jelsa which was the most popular ship (when measured by the amount of fics, for example).

I think a lot of the younger writer, especially, can't tell the difference between what a character is like and how they personally view them.

So if they feel that a character is totally the worst, they don't maybe grasp it's just their personal interpretation and opinion and that objectively, that character might not be quite as horrible. So they don't understand they're maybe portraying them as OOC since "that's what they're like"

Sometimes yes, nowadays mostly oneshot fap fics. When I was younger I used to read all those chaptered 100k long as fuck ones, but now I don't have the patience/time anymore. I see fanfics as an alternative to getting off when I get bored of visual porn. Too bad the pairings I like now either have too few fanfics or a lot of them are badly written/have those weird kinks like A/B/O and mpreg shit.
>>
>>79178312
I'll probably regret asking, but A/B/O?
>>
>>79178343
>Alpha/Beta/Omega or Alpha/Omega (occasionally Alpha/Beta) is a kink trope where some or all people have defined biological roles based on a hierarchical system, with the terms originating from animal behaviour research. There may be werewolf, knotting, or other animalistic elements involved, or the characters may be otherwise purely human.
>Alphas are generally dominant and able to impregnate Omegas. Male Alphas usually have a knot when aroused.
>Betas are subordinate to Alphas and may or may not be able to impregnate Omegas; in some fanworks Betas aren't present and the trope is known as Alpha/Omega, in others they take the role and functions of Omegas and Omegas aren't present.
>Omegas are generally lowest on the hierarchy (although in some fanworks Omegas are rare and prized). Male Omegas are self-lubricating and have the ability to become pregnant, sometimes referred to as being bred or mated. Lovers may form pair-bonds with a special connection with telepathic or empathetic qualities. Paired Alphas may be jealous and possessive of their mate, while the Omega may become submissive. Omegas and Alphas may go into heat and need to have sex; this may be the only time Omegas are fertile.

Basically a lot of weird shit like sel lubricating assholes and male impregnation and animal characteristics. I guess I understand the appeal, but it's not for me.

fanfiction.net allows for custom forums. They don't have general forums at all, just fanmade private subforums.

They have guidelines about "all content has to be suitable for teens" and "forums are not to be used to post stories" etc. though, and they also hold the mod of the forum personally responsible for what goes on in the forum.

But it might be okay if people would post the stories they want critiqued in a pastebin or google doc or such and just link it (even though that's very difficult in ffnet as well) and post appropriate warnings so it's the fault of the meddling teens if they wander off and read it.

But an open crit / feedback forum would be nice. If someone makes the ffnet forum, please include /co/ in the name so it's searchable

a lot of fiction is people wanting to explore things that worry and/or fascinate them, but with a safe distance. mpreg stuff stems from simple wanting to explore pregancy, but projecting it onto males to provide such a buffer. yaoi is popular because unlike standard male/demale dynamics, male/male dynamics have both participants start from a position of sexual equality, something many women desire when the mainstream dynamic is that a man is more powerful than a woman. at the same time most yaoi reverts to seme/uke dynamics, which are a somewhat exaggerated form of heterosexual dynamics, because there's still the desire to explore, understand, and possibly learn how to subvert those dynamics. a typical yaoi story arc starts with the seme having all the power, but lose that power both as the seme realizes how helpless they are to resist their desire of the uke, and also the uke gaining power from understanding just how desirable they are.
'going into heat' which becomes prevalent with the flimsiest excuse, revolves around sexual agency. one person becomes sexually irresistible, and the other person becomes a slave to their desire for sexual conquest. Often the actual sex is essentially rape, but the narrative depicts both participants as blameless, but they then have to live with the consequences since it results in pregnancy. This is trying to come to some sort of conclusion about sexual objectification. If one is a sexable object, does that make the other a sexing object? by consolidating nature and nurture, the question of 'wjhy' is done away with. it instead becomes a question of if being sexually conquered is the only outcome, what to do when you've been sexually conquered, and how sympathetic the conqueror is after the fact.

combine all these things, you get A/B/O in which women use men as stand ins for their sexuality (physical and cultural), actual sexual experiences and potential sexual experiences, exaggerated to make it easier to analyze

This seems like an awfully wordy explanation of someone wanting to read about NarutoxSaskue porn
>>
>>79179016
Right? I always find it weird how people write entire essays about why girls like slash for example. Either it's "because they have intrenal misogyny and gay porn excludes women" or "because women want to read about a relationship that's equal and it's actually feminist because straight porn usually involves the woman being submissive".

Nah son, I just think two attractive guys going at eachother is hot. No one tries to explain why straight guys enjoy lesbian porn, it's just taken for granted. When it's women liking gay porn, it's because of a 2deep4u reason.
>>
>>79179083
>No one tries to explain why straight guys enjoy lesbian porn
that's because explaining why straight guys enjoy futa is more juicy
>>
>>79179101
If I had to guess, I'd say some straight guys enjoy futa because of the taboo aspect. You have a very attractive girl with big boobs and feminine features and then bam suddenly a big cock in your face. The weird/taboo aspect of it arouses guys that have been desensitized to vanilla porn.

I'm not a straight guy though, so I don't know if that's the explanation. However from my own experience with fetishes and hearing others talk about them, I realized people are just getting into more and more weird shit when they become desensitized to normal porn. You just start looking for more unusual stuff to get off to.

>>
>>79173571
Same. Some fiction with limited scope needs OCs to flesh it out enough to tell broader sorts of stories.

I also don't mind OCs that fit logically into the universe. For instance if its mentioned that a military force consists of 12 squads and we only see 9 in canon, I'd have no problem with decent, non-sue OCs filling in the other 3.

Okay, then I'm not sure what you want. If it's just fanfics set in SBURB that's like.. between the lines of what we saw in canon, then it's no wonder you're not finding anything quality you want.
>>
>>79180119
>if it's just fanfics set in Hogwarts that's like... between the lines of what we saw in canon

think about it for a second, anon
>>
>>79180126
That's apples and oranges though. Part of the reason why there's so many SGRUBless AUs is because there was world building for the Alternian Empire that we never got to see because the setting changed to SGRUB. In HP we're just missing ol' muggle England and we still saw that every Summer vacation.

Though, as I'm writing this I can see what you mean. We know the outcome of the SGRUB, but I haven't seen much of any fics set during their session, even if it is kind of limited on what could happen. Same with humans, like the Alpha!SBURB session, though that would just be relationship drama as their gameplay amounted to grinding and looting since their session was nul.
>>
>>79180224
How is SBURB less interesting than Alternia? Are you a teenage girl?
>>
>>79180236
I never said it was less interesting, I was just saying a whole other setting was briefly explored and dropped. There's tons of fics that explore SBURB, but with original characters where you don't know going in how their session plays out. What more of SBURB are you expecting to see with the canon cast in a fic that isn't also an AU where the scratch doesn't need to happen or any of the other shit that fucked up the sessions?
>>
>>79180265
>What more of SBURB are you expecting to see with the canon cast in a fic that isn't also an AU where the scratch doesn't need to happen

^^^
>>
>>79180277
Do you /do/ want a fic where.. say, Jack never got the ring? And the kids never had contact with the trolls because the SGRUB session wouldn't have been interrupted by Jack, and they just kind of do their quests on their planet, meet their denizens, and fight the Derse royalty and win as normal?
>>
>>79180338
>and they just kind of do their quests on their planet, meet their denizens, and fight the Derse royalty and win as normal?
what would have happened in such an outcome has already been all but spelled out in canon though
>>
>>79155092
Certainly are
>>
>>79180528
Exactly. That's why pretty much every fanfic about exploring the possibilities of SBURB use original characters because this at least gives new settings, class and aspect combinations, and possibilities for the session. The appeal of SBURB in canon is that it introduces you to the mechanics of the game and makes you wonder in what cool ways it could be played with, but being stuck with the main cast limits that creative potential. Thus fanventures set in SBURB.

Yeah, I've always thought it's something like that, it provides an avenue to explore all sorts of dynamics and power balances and whatnot without the baggage that comes with traditional or real-life hetero relationships.

And of course, it's smut. So I think it's a combination of inventing sex scenarios for amusement, and also maybe subconsciously exploring new and interesting scenarios. And because it's so unrealistic and fantastical, since those dynamics don't really exist IRL, people are more free to write whatever without being labeled as "romanticizing rape and abuse" or other such accusations that they might face from the tumblr crowd really quickly if they'd write about similar submission in a trad male-female relationship.

I think it's extraordinary that we've filled 2 consequtive threads with quality discussion. Normally the lone fanfic thread gets only a few responses and they fall off the catalog without ever hitting bump.

But seeing as fanfic isn't necessarily /co/ related, I think it's best to make a new thread when the old one has fallen off the catalog, or at least when it's at page 10. Also for the love of god don't call it a general so we don't draw unwanted attention.

Let's just discuss as long as there's something to discuss, and keep figuring out if there'd be a place to trade reviews or criticism or whatever?
