Why do reactionary comics always have such awful art
>prose stories about a universe where superhumans are real
>The first Trans superhuman
That's a pretty big fuck you to Rebis.
>You guys are harsh, that art isn't that bad.
>Superheroes who consider coming out as LGBT but need to tell the public that they exist at all before that
Is this just sloppy storytelling or a metaphor for the invisibility of LGBT people?
There have been not-quite-trans characters since the 40's (Ultra-Humaite), but the first trans hero was Sir Tristan in Camelot 3000 in the early 1980's. First trans super human would have been Walter "Sasquatch" Langkowski from Alpha Flight who died and was reborn by magic as a woman in a stroryline in the mid 80's.
>Men who magically reincarnate as women whether they want to or not
This meme has to stop.
I understand, but that's still bullshit.
So does that make everything DC has done since Nu52 "The First" in comics now? Is Aquaman now "The First" aquatic superhero?
How fucking arbitrary.
If they believe they are the opposite sex how does it not fall under the umbrella, other than it's not possible in real life.
There was also a reformed superheroine from a recent Astro City. That story has a nice swerve to it, but I can't remember the details.
Why are modern journalists so quick to claim something as the first of its kind? Is there a rule against using Google Search that journos have to follow or something?
> First transgender Superhuman
What is a shapeshifter? for $500
> the leaders of the U.S. have used in their unrelenting jihad against America
stopped reading right there
Their mind, not their brains. Of you are reborn as a woman, your brain is all configured to be like a woman brain.
Trans people have a small part of the brain, configured for the other sex, that keep telling them that they are e the opposite sex. Its a physical issue, a small part of the body that was configured as it was from the other sex. It woudn't be there if it is just transformation, or if the character is reborn.
Well yes. If you change the body and the chromossomes, the brain changes its configuration too.
its magic. you don't know how their brain is configured. if they SAY they are, then they are.
Many of these characters go to great lengths to say how uncomfortable they are in the opposite sex's body. Magically trans, but still trans.
They do not consciously self-identify as female prior to the transformation, their transformation is not a purposeful result of that identity.
If anything, they accept that they're female because they have female bodies, which is basically the opposite of what it actually means to be transgender.
They reinforce the ideas that it's not possible to change one's gender in real life, and that your gender is designated by your body, which are completely at odds with what it means to be transgender in real life.
The fact that it can't happen in real life really ought to be enough to disqualify comparing these characters to real people whose experiences only overlap in the most remote, abstract sense possible.
doctors diagnose you because they get mad money from the pill industry, why do you think 90% of the recent transgender people are american? Nothing is more profitable than selling a life long treatment to a white middle class man.
Reactionaries tend to be batshit crazy and have no talent except for their crazy, same for extreme radicals. With a few notable exceptions of course.
Also once something exists just to support someone's psychotic ramblings about the government coming for their teeth it's not going to be good in a traditional sense anyway so why bother. Only other nutcases who want to circlejerk will buy it and don't give a shit about the quality.
A shapshifter isn't necessarily transgender, not even necessarily "non-binary" or "genderfluid", because they might be quite confident in their gender identity despite their ability to change sex at will (alternatively, they might be totally confused about it for the same reason).
The Doom Patrol had a genuinely transgender member at one point, Coagula. You'd think DC would dredge her up for some diversity points. Maybe they just don't want to pay her creator.
>It's never a guy who used to be a woman
literally the only thing wrong with the costume is the stupid spikes
there's plenty ELSE wrong with that portrayal of Midnighter but the costume itself, aside from that one element, looks fine
There's no money to be made in retractions. Even "legitimate" journalism publishes retractions only when they absolutely have to, and then only in small print somewhere people won't likely notice.
How about Hughie's childhood friend from The Boys? He was a male>female transexual who fought off a very large woman with garden shears and, ironically, got his junk cut off in the struggle.
Remember when we had the first Heterosexual Superhuman couple?
>it is never a pre op tranny just a guy that got magic'd/scienced into a women
It completely defeats the purpose by making it an instant swap with no draw backs. Does earth X thor count as trans?
It would be more dumb in a setting with magic for a tranny to NOT use it.
The exception would be a street-level spidermanesque one with just as much teen drama as superheroics.
Honestly I'd read that.
God damn man i didnt want to believe that these people writing this shit don't read funny books but this is so far away from the truth
Shameful is what this is
Fuck you /co/, He/She fucked alien lesbians and doesn't afraid of anything.
And to skip over the "shape-shifters don't count" Xavin's default form slowly changed from male to female over the course of the comic.
Remember when we had the first Black Superhuman?
>LOOK AT THIS FANTASTIC CHARACTER
>What's great about them?
>Oh, no thanks
>WHAT ARE YOU A FUCKING BIGOT
Getting tired of this shit. If the main draw of your character is something like sexuality or race or religion then that tells me the character is boring and contrived.
I know right? Its the current year! Why fans still have to come up with their own representation?
he was the first "True Gay" character in gaming, afterall!.
let's forget all the japanese games that handled Gay characters so subtlety and so well!
my problem with all this is that it boils the character down to his "gayness" or "transness" Dorian didn't exist outside of the scope of how gay he was.
I hated everything about Dorian
>Bioware hype up gay character
>Character is a snarky quip machine with a twirly mustache and his side quest is literally DADDY ISSUES
I fucking hate Bioware so goddamn much
I also liked this.
>Looks like a woman while still looking different from most other people
>Extremely feminine but that's okay
>Men who desire her lose interest when she explains her genital situation
>Has a lot in common with gay men but can't completely relate to them
Because the writers never get that these male characters who magically become female are more like transmen than transwomen.
They're portrayed more like women who just need to accept the fact that they're women.
Sounds like garbage trying to get some controversy buzz. I genuinely want more diverse characters, but how about making something actually interesting about the character in the first fucking place? I'm not even going to Google this shit. Maybe if they described the character in any interesting fashion I'd care.
Wasn't there already a better character of this nature in Demon Knights, they just didn't make it the whole focal point of the character/book, just a solid element of the story?
I played as a gay dwarf in the first Dragon Age game (which was okay, I liked the dwarf noble shit, can't remember if you could have a gay character as a dwarf without mods), but I haven't touched Bioware since the various disasters that were Dragon Age 2/Mass Effect 3/SWOTOR/etc. That almost tokenism thing they have going is obnoxious and the writing is just cliche after cliche.
>It completely defeats the purpose by making it an instant swap with no draw backs.
Especially when it's by people who don't want to swap to begin with.
It's like the exact opposite of what real life transsexuals go through. People who write these characters are just looking for a quick pat on the back.
>Look up androgen insensitivity syndrome
This is something that affects male (androgen) sex hormones.
Of course it skews men having some physical secondary sexual characteristics of a female.
Because it pretty much exclusively effects men.
A woman is going to be unaffected.
You are wrong on it tho.
Because in universe, tehse characters are NEVER treated as trans, or classified as such.
Its just fans that do this, even on thid thread there is discussion regarding if genderbending a character with magic makes them automatically trans.
Not all genderbend moment on a comic or cartoon need to have something related to trans people. Most writters arent thinking of it when they do this, it is mostly for gag because its funny or hot, or for the sake of playing with concepts.
Not everything needs to be related to identity politics.
It's just a meaningless distinction. Dysphoria is just the feeling of your body not matching up to your brain. Like, if someone identified as female, but wanted a more masculine appearance, that's dysphoria on just a way smaller scale.
>Dysphoria is just the feeling of your body not matching up to your brain.
Does it go both ways? As in, a guy with a slender/petite frame wishing they were more masculine? Or a butch woman wishing to be more feminine? Or does that kind of thing not count because it's "re-enforcing socitial norms"?
Dysphoria is an actual medical condition. It isn't a feeling. It's measurable and quantifiable.
Just wanting to be the opposite gender because "reasons" isn't gender dysphoria. It isn't a condition.
That this is a thing is annoying.
"Today I don't feel like doing feminine things"
That's not what gender is you fucking clod.
Transsexual refers to someone who has undergone the sex reassignment surgery. Transgender just wears the outward appearance. If it helps, gender is based on social understandings of sex where sex is biological.
What the fuck.
I didn't watch it but I'm pretty sure Shezow! featured a boy who turned into a girl and later on a girl who turned into a boy.
Super-Transgender was the point of the show.
What are "reasons"? If someone is willing to take hormones or undergo surgery, clearly they feel strongly enough about it because of the dysphoria they're feeling. You're just not understanding the concept of gender as a spectrum and not a dichotomy.
No in that case they're doing the whole "I can understand women too, see, I have written a story about a man who becomes a woman, hence putting myself in your pretty shoes". Fishing for feminists instead of trannies.
I remember about 15 years ago there was tons of shitty "Christian" edutainment that was a cheap pastiche of whatever was in vogue with popular culture at the time. Now it's the nu-Left making all that stuff, except it's to promote progressive values instead of Christianity.
This story that I linked for example, Ranma, and Guy Gardner in the 90s, and Guy Gardner again - before the author changing some of his story because of backlash - were all example of doing it for the sake of humour, or at least avoiding identity discussion.
Hell, the poor writter of Justice League 3000 get shat on because people were saying that he was obligated to focus on trans drama regarding Gardner.
There are a few. I can help a little tho.
What? I want to see your examples them, of it being done as some sort of political statement.
I can only think on Jonnhy Bravo, and maybe that episode with Timantha, but the last isnt quite feminism, and more regarding "you can like whatever you want".
Actually, I think it was implied that Xavin actually identified as male. That he at first thought he could just become female permanently to be with Karolina, but later found out it wasn't actually that simple. Because of this he took every excuse to take his male form, for example to be intimidating. It got him into a bit of an identity crisis. Even Molly, normally naive about these thing, saw through this and confronted Xavin about it. I think deep down all of the main cast knew this, but were afraid to say it out loud, fearing that this might make them guilty of ending the relationship between Karolina and Xavin. In the end Xavin realised that while he really had come to love Karolina, he couldn't be with her forever as he couldn't be himself, so this made the decision to sacrifice himself and take her place easier, as this way Karolina would remember him fondly, and he could save his love.
I don't see what makes those mutually exclusive though. The strong feelings are the outward sign of the dysphoria. Gender also just isn't like that. Non-binary and genderfluid people are completely legitimate.
I dunno if that's how they localized the title wherever you're from, but are you talking about "Soon I Will Be Invincible", bu Austin Grossman?
If so, A+ post anon, that book was great.
Also, it might be relevant that this was printed right before the Molly confrontation
Tumblr, most of special snowflake genderswap aren't real.
Genderfluid os not a real thing. You are just a man that lhes to pretend to be a woman sometimes, or a woman who likes to act according to what she thinks is "manly". Usually I just seems people relroducing stereotypes.
>you can'tem be a tomboy! Youtudo gender must be a demiboy/girl!
> I am this goddamn stupid
Go read pic related, pleb.
>can't remember if you could have a gay character as a dwarf without mods
You could but the only character you could have a gay relationship with was Zevran. or be lesbians with Leliana and Isabela. You can also have a bi-orgy with these characters.
Then in Dragon Age 2 they made everyone be bi.
DA2 was a joke but still
>shitting on Jams art
You has no hearth buddy.
God fucking damn. It's 2016, there's no hoverboards and people are arguing about what dangles between the legs of fictional characters. There's not even the option to freeze myself to skip this stupidity.
YOU GUYS SUCK, THE FUTURE FUCKING SUCKS.
Looks like the last boss in resident evil dead aim, right down to the electrical powers.
Reactionaries are just the SJW of some time ago.
In some years, people will call SJW reactionaries too.
And reactionaries are always wrong for reasons.
What is there to explain? Why is the vast majority of transgender cases MtF? Why is the rhetoric in western countries that straight white men are evil and any straight white men who choose to become women are now "absolved" of all sin like a religious person.
Not him, but I don't either. Could you explain what the difference is between a man and a woman on a non-physical level? Is there any kind of definition for what exactly makes you a man or woman?
It's how you identify. For example, is a muscular guy with a beard more of a man than someone without those traits? No, because your identity isn't tied to your outward traits. Gender exists as a social construct and not a biologic definition. However, aspects of your biology tend to influence your identity one way or the other generally through brain chemistry.
But what makes you identify one way or another? If I were to say "I am a woman", does that actually make me a woman? I mean, do we know that people who identify as a man and a woman feel different in any way? There must be some kind of difference other than just people saying they have a gut feeling about something that isn't even defined? There must be some agreed upon way in which a man and a woman universally differ psychologically, right?
>a weapon that the leaders of the U.S. have used in their unrelenting jihad against America as they seek to wipe out the nation and culture
>What is there to explain?
How "Why is it always MtF?" relates to "Why do women want to emasculate men as much as possible?"
I don't understand how the second question follows the first.
Wouldn't sir Tristan in Camelot 3000 be considered transgender? I guess they were superheroes.
You just discovered why "it feel like I am other gender without having dysphoria" is bulshit, and not different than being a otherkin that thinks that he is a hamster or cartoon character.
There are certain brain structures that appear more or less depending on whether you identify as a man vs a woman. Truth is that there's a lot of shit we don't understand about the brain, but we do have the evidence that transitioning does help people who are feeling dysphoria. The problem is equating "feel" with "passive whim" when it's really a foundation of your being and identity.
20% down from 70%. Still massive. but, also progress.
Its actually dropping as well, as procedures are improving, and treatment is improving.
much of the high rates post transition was from inferior srs, hormones, and "too late" transitions in the 70's.
suicide rate post transition for NEW transitioning is pretty stable.
Unfortunately that's not the case. After transitioning, suicide rates for trans people fall to the same as cis people of the same gender. Also, an overwhelming majority of people who undergo hrt or srs report an increase in their quality of life
I miss xer so fucking much but comic limbo xe wil remain. Fucking SUCKS.
It's not physically detectable. Those brain structures don't define your gender as far as we know, they just tend to appear more/less in one gender or another, but that isn't a rule.
Star hawk can be a man one day and a woman the next, that's the type of shit these people love. I hate this click bait shit, when will it end
At least in that issue the dude isn't in her body. They did fuck though.
I don't know if that is really the truth either. You know it seems a lot more girls pretend to be boys in their youth. Not that they don't exist at all but that's probably not an accurate measure.
Outstanding. That is the sort of groundbreaking examination of sexual issues and gender that I want to see explored in my comics.
For the same reason that most progressive art is terrible. They're so busy pushing their shitty radical agendas that they don't care about bettering themselves as artists and writers. They prefer shouting at other people and calling them shitty human beings instead of turning their criticisms inward in productive ways.
That guy in the OP is far-right, you idiot.
>Looks like generic hot comic book bimbo.
Not only is it decades too late as many people in this thread have pointed out but I doubt whoever is writing it will do anything interesting with the concept.
Just a cheap marketing gimmick to appeal to the tumblr-set.
But they're really shitty representations of trans-men, since none of them actually acknowledge that they're trans. Instead, they pretty much all just decide "Well, I've got boobs now, guess I'm a girl".
I know you're joking, but I really would have loved for Marvel to use Ultimate Jessica to explore gender and sexual identity issues stemming from being a different sex than what you've been identifying as for all of your life. There was a lot of interesting shit they could have done with Peter in a girl's body, and they just ignored all of it to make her completely comfortable in her new body.
But sasquatch was Transgender. When he was brought back and put into snow birds sasquatch form.
