It just made the most sense for how they were establishing her character. She was still mindlessly loyal to Homeworld but growing to like Steven and the CGs. It wouldn't really have even been a betrayal since in her mind she was always loyal and just formed a temporary alliance to save her skin.

But then she'd realize that she actually liked the CGs against her better judgment and turn around to save them.

Anyway, what we got in the end was close enough. She almost betrays them but stops at the last second and even after it's over she's conflicted and doesn't understand why she did it.
