Oh he's going to show up the instant that Katia gets out of Kavatch and rob her of everything again. Remember that ring that he took? Every item on that list Dimitri thought of sending Katia was made entirely to fuck her over (Wand of silence, Ring of Firewalking, and Amulet of Reflection), so the cards were stacked against her from the beginning. Any of them would make any fire mage weep and since Gro-Upp can't remove the ring it's pretty much guaranteed we're fucked when he inevitably shows up again.

Nah here's how I would write it:
Katia completes her objectives involving Sigrid in the flash Katia: Ivade in some roundabout way.
Katia decides to be brave and goes back to Anvil without ASOTIL, Gro-upp shows up.
Gro-upp is about to be arrested by Gaius but luck saves him by dropping an oblivion gate at the poor captain, killing him but pointing Katia to where she can find more about the nightmares.
Katia flees and most of Kvatch is destroyed (this is the part where bartender dies).
Katia decides to live up to the name 'Katia F. Managan' and storms in the gate, retrieving the sigil stone in some roundabout way.
Katia is the hero of Kvatch, walks to anvil wearing confidence and chainmail.
Katia tries to find Quill but is told she went to visit her friend in Chorrol.
Katia leaves the book at her house and departs to seek her nightmare source (either in Cyrodiil or in some other province)
Katia meets ASOTIL on the road and hijinks ensue, fun times
Katia has her own horse now, nothing can stop her
Katia and ASOTIL stumble upon an Oblivion gate, ASOTIL tells Katia to flee while he holds the bad guys off
Katia runs to get help, finds Quill's body on the way.
Katia has a breakdown

Partly because of fan perception, QW has become part of the "main cast" despite not actually having all that much paneltime. So it makes sense to use her in side stories and author messages to kind of keep her relevant.

That's why I only said "partly". QW definitely has an important place in the story. But if she was replaced by a slightly less "marketable" character like say Aggy, the fans wouldn't have gracitated to that character as much, and the focus would lie heavier on the quest itself vs disappointing the quest-giver.
