You can thank the CRTC requirements for that. A certain percentage of all media aired in Canada has to be either fully or partially made in Canada or by persons from Canada. Which means a lot of garbage gets the green light because "it's Canadian" and potentially good stuff has a lot more to compete with for air time or even being made in the first place.

I feel like shows from Canada need to be judged on a different standard

It's certainly not comparable to anything from CN's main lineup, but when put next to stuff like Sidekick or JT, where the unlikable characters vastly outnumber the likable ones, it's really not THAT bad.

With how the two aliens look after the kids and try to protect them (while still being annoyed by them), there's a sense of "warmth" that I guess the other shows I mentioned just don't have. Any time JT has an episode where Johnny learns to appreciate his family, it feels really cynical and forced.
