My suggestion on where you should start solely depends on your commitment to it. Starting at 252 is the easiest. Starting from the beginning is a long painful, but more rewarding journey. The most recommended way to get into it that I've seen is to read from the beginning til you get tired of it, then skip to 160.

If you do decide to check out the pre-reboot stuff, the best advice I can give is don't get too attached like I did.

The lawsuit happened in part because one game (Sonic Chronicles) was heavily inspired by comics from a previous writter (several characters were equivalents), and that writter claimed to have the rights of the characters he created.
That was as far as comic characters ever made into the games, and now it seems less likely to happen.
Because the thing got out of hand, the comic dropped all characters from previous writters just in case (the ones from the cartoons could stay and get redesigned, such as >>79066634 and >>79068979 )
Those characters from Sonic the Fighters were made for that game, but haven't appeared in any game since, but did so in the comics and a lot, so it's easy to associate them with the comics more.

Out of all of those, Rotor is the only one that makes even a little sense.

And I don't think that ever went beyond some light flirting on her part and him nervously gulping (Nicole was still just a disembodied voice in a computer at that point).

Slutting it up with Sonic was what ALL the girls did during that point in the early 2000s, so Nicole was just another victim of the era.

Espio was totally random bullshit. Shard was just as random, except it came with the baggage of her liking him just because she slutted it up with Sonic during that bad time in the comics.

Sonic has had a monthly comic for 20 years, time enough to build a dedicated consumer base (not just a fan base) who will continue to support the book until they're in the grave.

Mega Man was essentially absent from the American market, games and merch, for that length of time. At this point, trying to jump start the franchise is too little too late.

There are not enough existing fans to create a consumer base to get it off the ground.

Well that was pretty much Ian's fault.

The existing fans picked up the book because they wanted to see the characters from the games. Because the only fans that existed were fans of the games.

Instead, the game arcs got quarantined to rushed 4-parters whereas all of these Original Characters got 8-12 parters dedicated to them. There was nothing to attract the existing fans who gave the book a shot because it was just an outlet for Ian's OCs and nothing more.

Add to that the fact that because he took so fucking long to adapt the games, even as measely 4-parters, there were barely any Robot Masters to work with. So just to appease fans who didn't want to wait 10 years to see Centaurman or whatever, we kept getting all these time travel one-shots or arcs just to get them in the book for an issue.

It was a fucking mess.
