Fuck the future movie. They got rid of her old costume for that one reason.
Has any character been given as many chances to be something more than mediocre than Carol? This book is going to be shit and it's actually unfair that this lame is getting a movie instead of Monica.
>Carol can now punch meteors into dust
She's never been that strong....at best she's around Luke Cage level strength
she's sadistic, that's different. She likes seeing things suffer, not necesarily because she's punching them.
it's extremeley by-the-numbers. It doesn't do anything with the line width, bareley anything with light and shading, faces and poses also reek of relying to hard on the character sheets
what stuff has he done? the only thing I can ever put his name to is his She-Hulk run
>Body turning away from the direction of the punch
What the fuck kind of action pose is this?
Whoa buddy, Wonderman is up there in super heavyweights, Carol is around class 75 nowadays higher when she goes Binary.
There may be hope one day.
Tbh, you need to be a douche with an ego to be able to write and draw as well and to handle big name characters.
There are lots of nice people in comics, but without the douchebags comics would be shit. Well shittier than they are at this shit level. Basically we can only go up from here.
Carol is class 100 if we are using class OHTOMU classifications.
She's obviously not in the league of Black Superman or Gladiator or any Superman clone but they've increased her base line to where she can compete with Tony on an even level.
Nah, he's like full on /pol/tard at this point plus he's got a massive ego and wants basically full editorial exceptions.
Basically the opposite of Morrison and most of his recent books haven't sold for shit.
Carol is a fun character, unfortunately she's typically written awfully and her supporting cast is mediocre which is why apparently they have resurrected Alpha Flight for this book.
doesnt help that they erased her full personality when the book started so that the writer didnt have to learn anything about her but powerset.
as in they literally had her mind wiped story wise.
Never underestimate /co/'s autism for this sort of thing. If nothing exist linking the writers to tumblr or feminism one person will completely pull something out of their ass and spam it enouph times, without giving evidence, and people will eventually accept it as true
She's a flying brick with a military and intelligence background.
Basically she should be able to do spy type shit in addition to punching shit.
That and unlike Wonder Woman she has flaws as a character.
That doesn't make her fun though. It might make her enjoyable to you, but that's not the same as fun. "Fun" is what they've been trying to do with her the last few years, when she should be a gruff fascist with a drinking problem.
all have had decent character arcs and aren't one-dimensional. The core problem is that most of them have awful rogues galleries and Marvel won't stick with a creative team long enough to develop loyal readers.
Well those books don't sell very well.
From a business stand point, why keep up a book that you're most likely losing money on making?
>looking at KSD Captain Marvel sales
I understand WHY they did it, but it was still dumb.
Honestly about half of the Avengers are right on the edge of being fascists anyway.
Carol is definitely in the Tony might makes right camp alot of the time. I think only the fact that she's got some hero worship of Steve and Mar-Vell keep her from going full fascist.
Because Black is my favorite color and she used to be more thick while now she isn't a "cow" with muscles and boobs. A very disagreeable person in personality so costume is the only thing to like.
Trademark and the movie.
I think Marvel is afraid of those Carol Corps raising a huge stink if they canned the book. I don't know why, but there isn't much reason to have kept KSD on that book for as long as they did.
>boohooo flawed characters arent fuuun
ironman is a manwhore as well, and aaron stack is a huge alcoholic asshole as well both are fun with their flaws, if you want to have female characters with equal rights to the male ones they have to have the broad strokes to have several flavors of them, just like the males.
That includes having flawed characters. If all your characters are the same safe "comfy" shit, they soon become a moe like blob and have no actual edge to them, they are just comfortable balls of no narrative whatsoever.
also fuck you for making me write all of this shit you wont even read
Spider-woman, Captain marvel and black widow have no rogues galleries.
The closest time Carol came to having a real rogues gallery was back when Claremont was writing her, but then he took them and made x-men villains. Reed seemed like he was going to build a rogues gallery for her, but all the villains he introduced he either killed or got rid of in some other way, as if he were going to use them later on but the comic got cancelled before he got the chance.
Honestly Marvel could give away comics and still be making bank on the Intellectual property.
The reality is that it's no longer the 80s and pre crash 90s issue sales are virtually irrelevant to WB or Disney. It's just that there are dickheads in the food chain of both companies that seem to pretend that the publishing arm of the comics is in anyway relevant to licensing aspects of the comics.
If you want to build up new properties you build up some of the old B level heroes to a-list. It worked for Iron Man (who was B-level for decades but is now basically top dick for Marvel).
Spider-Woman has her 70s rogues gallery which is admittedly garbage but you can easily give her old Hydra foes like Viper.
Captain Marvel would make sense in a Cosmic book especially with Starlord and Real Nova on ice. But her in GotG and have her beat up on the Super Skrull and Ronan.
Black Widow is fine going vs Spidey level jobbers like Shocker or she can do super spy shit vs Hydra.
Shulkie of course gets to beat up on Hulk's awful rogue's gallery plus all the joke villains that somehow avoid getting killed by Punisher or Scourge.
Claremont and Byrne need to go off to the retirement home.
I used to love Byrne but he's a 110% get offa muh lawn crank now and it would be a pathetic trainwreck like Neal Adams Batman to let him on a book now.
The new outfit is garbage.
Since when is a woman's figure supposed to be unfeminine?
That's been a big problem with many redesigns: let's make her a woman by making her look less like a woman.
A bit counterintuitive, no?
>It worked for Iron Man
Iron-Man only worked because of the one/two punch of Civil War and the first IM movie (and RDJ). I can't think of any non-event story to come out that was notable for Tony. Also, don't his comics put up mediocre numbers? He's obviously a big movie draw, but he is only big in Events.
Hulk literally only has PH/WWH that ANYBODY knows.
Thor is probably the best written solo character out of all the mainline Avengers.
Hell, despite getting a movie, Ant-Man is still basically irrelevant.
I just feel like these companies don't know what kind of a goldmine they have.
Well let's be honest even Namor and Hercules wear more than a banana hammock these days even though both have absolutely no issues with Nudity and are basically indestructible.
Herc nude wrestling everyone would make for an awesome comic.
Thank you. The biggest leap in logic of Marvel feminism has been taking women and making them more like men. Yeah, let's embrace femininity by taking away all of their femininity! Makes total sense.
Working and married.
Femininity is a powerful thing that a woman possesses. To throw that out and make them bland and unidentifiable is disrespectful. More so than any skimpy costume.
Since they're making her the butch to Spider-Woman's femme.
Iron Man consistently gets top level creative teams these days. Yeah Bendis is a shitty writer these days but he still sells. Same with Cap.Thor normally gets a top level creative team as well.
Beyond that Spidey of course gets a top level creative team (I know Slott is awful but he still sells) and Wolverine normally rates a major team.
Beyond that hardly any solo hero can keep an ongoing with stable sales. Hawkeye generally manages about 2 years and Carol 2 years but beyond that you have a vast wasteland of people that don't rate solo books.
Oh I forgot Deadpool who somehow keeps getting a solo despite them being awful most of the time.
keks aside, a female character doesn't need to have a bigger dick than a male character. They can be sexy and sensitive as well as badass and grim dark.
The current mold for female characters is laughable.
I think Black Widow needs a rogues gallery. Not a classic rogues gallery, but recurring antagonists that she can't kill due to political considerations. There are enough unused merc and spy characters for fodder.
Claremont is fine, he just needs to work with a partner or a strong editor.
>Spider-Woman is even pregnant from a man's semen.
Lesbians who want to give birth usually do get pregnant from man's semen.
The reality is that Marvel really only has a small number of properties that are worthwhile anymore especially when you factor in the lack of licensing revenue available from the X-men.
Avengers (let's say 2 Books worth)
4 Avenger Solo Heroes (Cap, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man)
Maybe 4 Avengers that can support 24-36 issue runs: Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Shulkie
The Marvel Knights Tier
Luke Cage and Iron Fist
2-3 Xbooks + Wolverine and Deadpool
Literally those are about the limit to what can consistently sell in the current Market without doing constant reboots and renumbering tricks to boost circulation.
They made him a man child once they made him unmarried to MJ.
I used to love Spider-Man comics, the character grew up, in a comics sort of way, but he grew up and got married. Once the One More Day nonsense had him which his aunt back I stopped.
Aunt May dying should have been part of his growth as a person, but they blank slated him ( cough KSD Carol cough) and turned him into a manchild
Spider-man is doubly fucked by the fact that ASM basically doesn't crossover with any other book in the marvel universe so it feels like Pete is operating in a parallel universe to the 616 and the fact that both Slott and Quesada seemed to think that 20 year old manchild Peter was the only character people wanted to read.
Now we have Peter as Tony Stark lite
>Spider-Woman is even pregnant from a man's semen.
That hasn't been confirmed yet.
>got Peter drunk
That or alien energy magic are just as likely.
>You could lay the blame for that on Pulido art, though.
What do you mean? I thought it looked fine.
Has Peter ever gone out partying except that one time when Johnny was crashing at his place after coming back from the Negative Zone?
That wasn't alpha flight, it was Omega flight composed entirely of new characters and they were killed on screen. No classic alpha flight characters showed up in that arc.
That might be my absolute most favorite comic ever.
Makes me wish that they could do a Spider-Man cartoon where Peter and Iceman and Torch were living together as roommates and Bobby and Johnny are always bullying Peter because they keep coming home with Shiar and Skrull and Kree Girlfriends but Peter can't close the deal with MJ or Gwen.
She needs a throw down with cap or tony and a she has a rightous raged freakout, one of them gives her the we are not judge and jury shtick, she tells them to shove it, then fight tiem!
It resolves and whatever and she learns about her edge. Also I want her to throw the shield with two fingers into the top story of a building. Then Ther! Brings it down and talks her down. (But really they fight cuz she is tired of being talked down too)
>Makes me wish that they could do a Spider-Man cartoon where Peter and Iceman and Torch were living together as roommates and Bobby and Johnny are always bullying Peter because they keep coming home with Shiar and Skrull and Kree Girlfriends but Peter can't close the deal with MJ or Gwen.
so ultimate spider man before peter died?
dats what happens when you mess with them white wimmen
Peter had by far the most game of that group.
Wonderman has always been in the top tier spot next to Hulk and Thor. He's just not a fighter mentally.
Carol has always been in the mid range, below Iron Man and Thing. She can just fly and survive in space. But the Luke Cage spot is correct. She was equal to Mar Veil who got his ass handed to him by Thing once.
Only because based Mackey made him fun.
Nah, if he was they wouldn't have shown him in the trailer, the thing about Rhodey is that no one wants to use him in the comics and he is almost John Stewart levels of plain.
I'm most looking forward to Brand and Carol interacting more.
EMH Carol was great.
>that last panel
Is the Peak turning in to Mother Base?
Rough Bob cut. Powergirl's usual look.
Always thought this Bowen statue had the best look of the shorter cuts for Carol.
Originally the explosion just made just made Mar-Vell's DNA mesh with hers which is why Carol registered as Kree to a lot of aliens that checked hers.
Of course the whole reason for her mindwipe was so they didn't have to adress Marv or the Kree stuff anymore in her origin despite the fact that her whole costume is suppose to be Kree inspired and she uses their insignia which is the Stat of Hala (suprisingly only Bendis acknowledged this in his shit Guaedians of Knowhere story).
Was expecting more style and flair with Anka's art - but at least he'll be consistent with her appearance. These days however it appears only the fanart appears to give her personality and the editors are only interested in a blank-slate-self-insert thing with Carol.
They could have gone for a better cosplayer than Butch Hambeast for the cosplay alt. cover too.
Brand: "While we've been fine designing and building our own fleet of space fighter craft we need decent weapons to equip them with. Where are we going to get them from?"
Carol: "I know just the raccoon."
>introduce characters on a page where all of them are obscured behind barely permeable glass
Anyway. It doesn't make sense that Alpha Flight is now SWORD, but at least it's actually Alpha Flight.
At this point I wouldn't have been surprised if they had just taken the name and applyed it to some unrelated female team.
>Captain Marvel (2016) #1 Lettered Preview
ftfy because I posted before the official unlettered preview in the thread which the OP pic is the unlettered version of that issue's Deadpool variant.
Eh, I'm just looking forward to more Brand. I'm basically just going to treat this as SWORD book starring Alpha Flight and hope the Carol portions don't weigh it down too much.
At least Brand is still getting used.
So what is it with putting body armor costumes of invulnerable people?
That has to be some type of armor, otherwise Anka just slapped on a bunch of superfluous lines and pouches to the thing.
Apparently he liked the Warbird costume and incorporated the the lines of armoured bits into the suit.
Think it's a retrograde myself - McKelvie's version was excellent. Pouches on belt instead of just pure sash was bad too.
When i get home i may try
is only one issue
Back during Reed's run, Carol hired a PR agency to improve her image among the general public, so while she may be a right wing hawk with alcohol problems and prone to violence, presumably the PR agency marketed her to the public as being an inspirational figure or something. Plus, Kamala was apperently in a crowd that was under attack when Carol saved them, which is what got her fangirling for her in the first place.
Basicall, Kamala loves Carol because she doesn't know the REAL Carol, only the one that marketing and propaganda has made her think she is. Which is actually pretty meta if you think about it.
>Carol fangirls don't know the real Carol, just the one that Marvel has tried to convince them is the real one
I don't think there's anything wrong with Carol's current look, I just think most artists suck at drawing it. That and everyone has been drawing her as a man. Carol should have a feminine but muscular figure, not giga-butch.
She looks great in Ultimates.
They should make this one of their one-shots to introduce Carol with. Replace the nameless Col. with Rhodey. Have him and a drunken Stark out there on the tarmac waiting for the test pilot. They'll have to blow a third of their budget on VFX to make Cheadle and Downey look ten years younger of course (ala Gandalf and Picard in X3). Have it fade to credits on Carol's "I always wanted to fly" line and then the sound of the missile lock, low ejection, and crash as the credits play out.
In the Captain Marvel movie play out the rest of her origin in a flashback scene: injured Carol running security at Cape Canaveral, and hoping to get fit enough to fly again, then getting involved with the mysterious scientist doing 'geology' work nearby. Cave, Yon-Rogg, fight, psychemagnetron go boom, powers, goes to work for SWORD, who're using Titan as homebase. Rest of movie set around/on Jupiter, Saturn, Mars before the finale on Titan as Thanos and the Cull Obsidian hit it hard and the humans and aliens are forced to evacuate.
Kamala only knows the Carol who got mindwiped and then had her personality rebuilt based on what her fans thought about her, meaning that she has literally rebuilt her own personality.
It also means that the original Carol Danvers is effectively dead, with some other person living in her body, which is creepy as shit but will never be adressed because lol she's a role model now.
Kamala has been a fan of Carol since the lightning bolt costume at least, she only just met her after the mindwipe.
And pretty much no writer is even bothering to deal with the KSD's mindwipe, probably because addressing it would be unsettling as hell.
>she only just met her after the mindwipe.
yeah that's what I meant. I worded it poorly.
It could actually have been a great, humanizing story for both of them. Kamala meets her idol and discovers that behind all that PR and the flashy news reports Carol is a flawed, normal human being. Instead of course Carol is now as great and as uncomplicated as the mediocre stories she was in, because complexity and depth only make a character worse, am I right? The current Carol Danvers could be anyone, she has nothing whatsoever in common with the old Carol Danvers. It's a travesty that they parade her around like some triumph when in truth it's nothing but removing a character and replacing her with a new, less interesting character.
Keep in mind that Kamala only interacted with Carol for something like 30 minutes and were busy fighting bad guys.
Really though, with the then-current state of the Avengers titles the only real place to explore Carol getting mindwiped would be her solo title, which wouldn't address it because KSD thought it a positive, Ms. Marvel, which really could only focus on Kamala's reaction, or Spider-Woman, which at the time was so new that it'd mess with story progression and feel out of place. Which is sad, I think the Ms. Marvel team could have turned the mindwipe into a really good, if downbeat, story.
It's also noteworthy that it looks like Bendis is just casually ignoring the mindwipe for Civil War II, which would be very Bendis and will no doubt confuse and anger "modern" Carol fans. He also had her wistfully talk about her old career in the GOTG annual last year, so I think he either doesn't care or doesn't know anything happened to carol's head.
I think it's more that no one cares about KSD or what she thinks and, considering pretty much every other book that Carol has made an appearance in sells far better than Captain Marvel, no one has a reason to follow her lead.
That's highly doubtful as Bendis lacks any kind of range with his characters. Especially his female characters. Look at how he screwed up Laura despite how fucking easy it is to do spock speak.
The easiest answer would be that Carol has access to a bunch of telepaths and a lot of superheroes, along with a few government agencies, that are pretty well-versed in her history.
True. Superheroes casually shrug off these sort of things a lot of the time. No reason Carol wouldn't. And honestly, what's the point of having her if she has no memories of her past other than that given to her by others? You'd be back to what she became after Rogue stole her powers and she had no emotional connection to the past, which led to her leaving earth because she felt no connection to it anymore.
In fact, the KSD mindwipe is almost beat for beat a recreation of the Claremont Avengers Annual- Uncanny X-men story.
Except with less telapthic space-whales.
Classic version of her costume (and by that I mean the one used in the 80's) had a regular leotard bottom, not a thong. The emphasis on asses and tits which became a hallmark of 00's Marvel art was what tipped the costume over to becoming "slutty". it happened to every costume at that time, sadly.
Soy was the boy with the best take on her new costume. Just a pity he couldn't churn it out fast enough.
If they just took her costume, and covered her hips by connecting her boots to her body piece the costume would be fine. Could probably shorten the gloves, too. Mid-bicep is a little long.
Disagree. He even made the helmet/fauxhawk look work.
Wut? The whole "I'm punching dinosaurs so it must be Friday!" kinda thing is way older than Raul Julia's awesomeness in Street Fighter. It's an old touring band joke - getting lost in the days because of the busy schedule and constant travel - "We're in Memphis so it must be Monday..." or having the current venue's location written on the back of their guitars so they know which town's name to say at the start of a set, "Hello ... Springfield."
>It's a travesty that they parade her around like some triumph when in truth it's nothing but removing a character and replacing her with a new, less interesting character.
Why are there only two types of female characters in comics?
>quippy sarcastic female who's a bit organized but wants to have fun *insert quip*
>meathead I like punching things and I'm "arrogant"
One worrying trend is that comic book heroines (and some female protagonists in other media) are increasingly portrayed as quirky, silly, immature womenchildren. They're pretty much the same character as a manchild but instead of being derided and mocked they're celebrated. As if taking responsibility and being an adult are now negative things to women.
I'll never understand it, personally.
That's what happens when you mindlessly ape something without capturing the texture and nuance of it. Most trends start like that, you have an original product which people love, then they want to copy that product themselves and make various inferior spinoffs.
Bendis' whole career is basically this, aping the surface of things with no understanding of the underlying concepts of plot and characterization.
She went back in time to her origin and accidentally gave someone from even further back in time (Helen Cobb, basically Jackie Cochran) powers the same way Mar-Vell did to her
But then she got back to her plane which was a time machine kind of and undid it? It's been forever since I read that arc.
So how mad does this make you, anon
I JUST WANT A GOOD FEMALE LED COMIC FROM THE BIG TWO
Goddamn Prez is over and Valentine left Catwoman. Why is everything else with female characters so damn shit now?
I don't know, could never really get into Ms. Marvel. The slice of life teenage girl quirky style is not really my thing.
I'd love something more serious for once. Scarlet Witch is trying to do that, but I find it pretty boring so far. Great art in the last issue though, hopefully the plot will get more interesting.
Since it emphasized the female form, it's strengths in beauty. If Marvel really is a facist as they say though I don't s3e why she wouldn't adopt a more male outfit. Military clothing and the like of male origin emphasize the male role of the soldier, one of history's deadliest variants of human. Historically speaking lets face it, survival of the fittest and sexual dimorphism dictate the fact that mankind's coercive institutions have always been dominated by males. If indeed facism is an ideology Carol embraces then perhaps she wants to demonstrate heself as being part of that soldier class. Although I don't understand her approach, as a woman why wouldn't she prefer female fashion to show that the woman that she is has a role in these institutions.
It doesn't even make any in-universe sense because it's supposed to convey a more "military" role to Carol and yet she has never been in the military as the status quo in the comics.
By the time of her first appearance in 1968 she had already retired from the USAF and was running security for NASA as a civilian. Then she became a freelance writer. At no point did she ever go back to the military. It's her background, not her whole fucking life.
I hope it does well, but is completely different than what they want.
Because if it bombs, they'll be insufferable and call people sexist or whatever. Having them be proven wrong based on content and dollars is so much better to me.
If Rhodey gets killed because of Bucky and Steve they don't even need Crossbones to shoot Steve.
Though I doubt the relationship between Rhodey and Carol is even gonna last until her movie comes out, so there's that either. Does she have a "classic" love interest they could fall back to? You know like with Tony and Pepper, Thor and Jane?
I want to have a silly character that uses cute words and thinks boys are gross and occasionally mimics spider behavior that considers Danvers her best friend while Danvers barely puts up with her antics.
Yes, I love Everything is Jessica too, but that doesn't make for a good character in a movie. I'd prefer a more realistic womanchild Jess in the, "Christ, woman, get your shit together," mold as a comparison to the more straight-laced Carol.
It will if he kills himself by jumping off a building in a Carol costume after carving, "Carol Corps 4 Life" into his abdomen and having a room wallpapered with pictures of KSD with the lips cut out.
If she thinks CM is getting a bulldyke hair then she is sadly mistaken, Carol will most likely get a very feminine redo since Disney would like to market her to little girls and little girls don't like dyke.
Also I am sure the MCU people won't make the same mistakes the comic people did.
Well the script is being co-written by Nicole Perlman who did the first drafts from the GotG movie until Gunn came in and according to him changed everything (we only know rhat her script had Nasa Peter and Rich Rider in it and that it didn't have much humor) she loves doing research on characters and she did a lot for Guaedians but who knows how good her writing is.
She also gave an interview about her doing the Cap Marvel script and had this to say
>“We’ve been talking a lot about archetypes and what we want this movie to be about and just how to write a strong female superhero without making it Superman with boobs… Meg and I are doing a lot of brainstorming and we’ll catch ourselves and say, ‘Wait a minute, what are we saying [here] about women in power?’ Then we have to say, ‘Why are we getting so hung up on that? We should just tell the best story and build the best character.’ And then we have this constant back-and-forth about how to tell a story that is compelling, entertaining, moving, kick-ass, and fun, and also be aware of what those larger implications might be."
They probably will just use Mar-Vell as a love interest and kill him in the end of the movie or jave him fo away like in EMH for some Thor and Jane drama.
Carol had a lot of shitty love interests though and I doubt they will use any of them.
Avengers alliance got the hair right.
Yeah I can see her having hair like this, a bob cut probably but nothing shorter and much less the stupid mohawk thing.
Her outfit might also get some redos but who knows how they will do it, probably something that's not straight up leather since she will compete with WW who has the Princess look and they might want to diferrentiate her from Natasha and the gazillion spy or SHIELD female characters they have.
DESU I can see girls liking Wasp better than Carol, she has that tinkerbell thing going on and she looks cute and girly with a side of tomboy kickass, then again we don't know how MCU Carol is going to be but boy they need to revamp and work with her a lot.
Marvel/Disney must be creaming themselves in anticipation for all of the toy clothes they can sell for Wasp.
It's funny but I see more girls dressing up as female Cap (which Partt City has as a costume) and Female Thor or female Spider-Man than I see girls as Black widow.
On the DC side it's Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, and even Catwoman.
I guess spy lady with red in her ledger amd a troubled past isn't appealing.
>has clarified its plan for one of its two offerings for this year's Free Comic Book Day: The issue will contain a "Civil War II" prelude story by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Jim Cheung, along with a story by "All-New, All-Different Avengers" writer Mark Waid and legendary artist Alan Davis introducing an All-New Wasp. Poor janet.
Eh. Ok not the NEW comic outfit, but you get the gist.
Damn this looks....retro
>Look, like it says, everything is awful, i'm not ignoring that
Geez, it reads like a passive-aggressive threat to... aything, possibly
>Look, guys, they made us happy this time but we're still coming after all their shit
>Meg and I are doing a lot of brainstorming and we’ll catch ourselves and say, ‘Wait a minute, what are we saying [here] about women in power?’ Then we have to say, ‘Why are we getting so hung up on that? We should just tell the best story and build the best character.’
Uh, that's kinda reassuring
