Most of the questions people ask about the plot are explained quite clearly in the games themselves. Hell, the series very frequently has moments of blatant exposition where characters stand around explaining everything that is happening. If it makes you feel any better it's not uncommon to see Sora shipped with female characters from other franchises. People see "Cross over kid" and they go crazy because Sora travels worlds.

Reminder hearts are not just objects that help you feel emotion. They are the manifestation of one's feelings during their experiences and memories they share with others.
All Nobody's act like Zombies at first due to their heart being gone, but as more experiences Coke, so do more feelings during those experiences, and so they regain a heart.

It's a not so subtle metaphor for people going through emotional tragedy, then, if their will is strong enough, moving on.
