To answer your question it has god tier writing and characters. It's written by the same guy who wrote Veronica Mars and Party Down so that's no surprise. Since it's on Cw, a lot of people started watching it because they were hot for Liv. Everyone stayed because it's legitimately good.

She regularly feeds on brains thanks to her job as a medical examiner for a police department.

Zombies work rather differently in this iteration. For all intents and purposes, so long as you keep yourself fed, you're the same person you were before you got zombified. There are some psychical changes, your hair turns white and you become a lot paler, anything other than severe head trauma won't kill you, and there's a fight or flight reaction where you go berserk and gain enhanced strength. Most importantly you gain memories, personality traits, and skills of the bastard who's brain you ate. It's what she uses to help solve murders.

There proper zombies, though. If you go too long without feeding you go feral and start to rot, after which point feeding won't reverse the segregation.

It's not The Walking Dead by any stretch, but as far as procedural dramas with some kooky hooks go, it's pretty good. It's also loosely based on a comic, hence why it's kosher to talk about it on /co/

The skills bit isn't as important as it seems. It's mainly used in conjunction with the personality adoption for comedic effect. Like there's one episode where she eats the brain of a murdered special forces veteran and she mainly uses it to dominate at paintball.

It's a clever take on the police procedural with light horror and comic book elements.

The main actress gets to explore different personalities instead of falling into a boring rut.

The writing isn't 10/10 but it is often funny and snarky.

The relationship crap is done better than normal for CW, with the love interest having an actual role in the plot (going Rambo at the end of S1 for instance) instead of being tween bait.

Also has some creative turns, like the horror movie episode.
