A brand new season of Samurai Jack is being made for Adult Swim Toonami. Coming in 2016.
Last week was our first week back from the marathons, and ratings were a little flimsy. This week things just get worse. AgK barely touches the million mark, and Parasyte hits a new series low. The pain doesn't stop there, Champloo takes a huge dive and poor numbers follow for the rest of the night. A bad week or a new trend? Only time will tell.

>No more bantz
>marathons save money so we can do less :^)
I'm glad ratings are dropping
Shame about the ratings but it's been worse,I suppose.
>what do the viewers want?
>well at minimum something somewhat new that hasn't aired on TV
>FUCK THAT LETS PUT AN 11 YEAR OLD SHOW THATS RUN BEFORE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BLOCK
>that may not be good for rat...
>MUH WATANABE STOP CRITICIZING ME
These ratings please me. It's a shame the only way to get through to Demarco is by killing the block though
>Kek la Kek did better than One Piece
Thanks for airing that filler Demarco, exactly what OP needs to succeed
These ratings is the target audience's way of saying "Demarco's a faggit".
Maybe they should have gotten this instead of Samurai Champloo.
>Show about economics with a side of cute wolf bitch
Come on man, I like the show too, but people watch this block to see niggas get wrecked, not listen to a treatise on supply & demand in Renaissance-era not-Europe.
This gets funnier by the week
>post yfw Demarco gets the block canned before Jack is ready so they have to shove somewhere on Sunday where it will fail
>all but a single show can be watched in its entirety/most recent episode on Hulu
I hope the other "big" shows for the block are exclusives because this shit is killing the ratings
Is anyone else nervous that CN/Toonami is going to go back downhill this year? Remember: the "sixth" year of a decade tends to be the apocalypse year, or the "666" year.
In 2006 (pic related)...
>Shows such as Cow and Chicken, Time Squad, Looney Tunes were removed.
>Jim Samples went senile.
>CN aired the Re-animated movie.
>Saved by the Bell ran on Adult swim for April Fools'.
>Commercials with terrible characters like Fred Fred Burger and Cheese were spammed to appeal to middle schoolers.
>Inuyasha, Teen titans, Justice league unlimited, and others ended, severing all ties with the early 00s.
>CN really pushed that Ben 10 shit, even though nobody liked it.
>Adult Swim stopped the chill Japan bumpers and replaced them with clips of their characters doing wacky/lolrandom things.
In 2016, something will happen, though nobody knows what.
I've seen Champloo plenty but I watch for the sake of the block (and to post best girl, of course)
>that feel when you haven't been watching Toonami and are contributing to the ratings decline
I miss you all :(
Health issues are making it so that I can't watch the entire block, and sometimes not even at all.
>Adult Swim stopped the chill Japan bumpers and replaced them with clips of their characters doing wacky/lolrandom things.
>replaced them with clips of their characters doing wacky/lolrandom things.
That never happened and you know it. And if it did, it happened in 2011.
I only watch Toonami for DKZKai and Parasyte. I only watch DBZKai because the only saga I saw in its entirety during its first run was the entire Majin Buu saga -- other than that, I had only seen a smattering of random episodes that were the original Saban/Ocean/Funi dub. I watch Parasyte because it's interesting and different. The rest of the shit I don't care about. Kill La Kill was okay, though. I missed on some other stuff, but whatever -- if I'm really interested in something, I'll just look it up and watch it subbed.
I actually never watched Champloo, it's always been on my backlog but not really something I was super interested in, so I'm glad to finally get an excuse to watch it, even if everyone else's already seen it.
And this is the issue Demarco pretends isn't one. The lineup sucks ass, but Demarco thinks the viewers will watch whatever the fuck he throws on. For awhile this did work, but since there is no hope of the block improving, people are less inclined to watch the shit
Not responding to your copypasta, but holy fucking shit did this shit make me detest Billy and Mandy. Basing the packaging of the entire fucking channel off ONE joke was infuriating
Picking up Champloo is a real display that he has no clue what the viewers want, or just molds the block into his own personal taste dumping ground
Anyone who believes the Fujiko Mine cover up is retarded. If KLK was slowed down by network worries when no actual nudity occurs, there's no way they spent more than 15 minutes with Fujiko Mine
Nothing, samefaggot. Fuck off back to reddit.
Three people posting within a few minutes with short little "I agree, you're absolutely right" messages without actually discussing what they think should replace it? Yeah, totally not the same person.
With KLK the issue was, "how much of this can we air unedited?" Assuming Fujiko was legitimately considered, I'd imagine the issue for that would be, "how much will we have to edit, and will it be worth our time to do so?"
>And they did discuss what should replace it, literally anything else
Here you go. This is the future you chose.
I'm not even dissing Naruto and One Piece fans, but we have to come to terms and understand that Toonami runs on one day a week, and having long running shows that literally have no end (One Piece) and shows that have endless filler with little to no hype (Naruto) will not fare the block well. Not to mention that viewer interest will wane, you can't just skip 300+ episodes and begin in the middle of buttfuck nowhere with a foreign show and expect people to flock to that shit. Not to mention it has a shit slot next to its long-running companion.
I understand Naruto on the block but I really cannot justify One Piece's existence on the block. We literally only have 3 and 1/2 hours, and to have 2 slots filled with polarizing content is not good. I understand when DBZ Kai ends they should switch in Naruto, but where the block stands right now they would be better off just replacing it. I'm not even trying to bait or piss anyone off but its just reality.
I'm willing to bet that long shows make more fiscal sense.
Look at what happens with the shorter series like SAO or Attack on Titan; you have to reair them multiple times (which nobody wants). They don't have the budget for new shows in their place which means reruns in order to make that money back. With a long running show that's circumvented, but that means that part of the block is going to be taken for years on end.
So I guess the question is what would you rather have, reruns of average shows over and over, or mediocre long runners?
>I want good shows.
Then get to torrenting. Most of they companies that would do business with Toonami are smart enough to know that the vast bulk of A-List stuff is for Blu-Ray release, not for TV.
That's wrong, it's the distributors that do the damage. Aniplex paid Toonami to air SAO, and gave SAO2 for a fair price.
Funimation raped Toonami on AoT and fucked them on Hellsing, which forced AoT reruns.
3am is always gonna be a rerun, Demarco is too cheap to get something new there when a rerun does just as good
Demarco has said before long shows cost right about the same as shorter ones. The reasoning for longer shows is some form of block stability
and laziness to cycle in new shows and make fresh bumpers etc
Between Naruto and One Piece the series that should go really is Naruto. The series is already over in Japan, and the anime is literally repeating the endless filler that they did when the first series ended. (There's at least another year of pure filler planned, right in the middle of the fucking final fight.) One Piece only has a couple of small filler arcs left before it resorts to only padding out episodes, which is better than endless LET'S ALL SING THE FROGGY SONG for years on end.
plus if viz wants to stay on the block it means hunter x hunter more likely than not, and that's like a good naruto/sao/dbz/hikaru no go/presidential election in place of terrible naruto
It's a tough issue. On one hand, One Piece loses filler, but padding becomes even more prevalent. 7+ minute recaps become the norm. Naruto has tons of filler, but minimizes watching the same shit 2-3 times in recaps and flashbacks
From a popularity and ratings standpoint, One Piece loses on both fronts, atleast on Toonami.
Lastly, Naruto is 3 weeks away from airing episodes never seen on TV before. There's no way we toughed it out for 2 years just to cut it loose now
Dang it, we toughed out all that filler in the first series to drop it right before getting to Shippiden, so we can drop it before getting to new to TV plot relevant episodes if we want to!
>Lastly, Naruto is 3 weeks away from airing episodes never seen on TV before. There's no way we toughed it out for 2 years just to cut it loose now
Not to mention Demarco is a huge fan of Naruto.
This block is honestly fucked unless we started over from scratch with no Demarco.
He is a fan of both, don't know if he has a favorite.
Remember, Demarco's own preferences are more important that viewer desires
>tfw I have baited Demarco into using this image about 3 times now
You all have really bad opinions and assumptions about Toonami.
"Let's replace One Piece with Spice and Wolf or Fairytale! :DDDD"
"Dude Champloo sucks xD Rating are tanking"
Just shut up and watch tv.
>Between Naruto and One Piece the series that should go really is Naruto.
But nobody is watching One Piece. Hell, when they gave it the early slot with Kai it still bombed in ratings. One Piece lost it's chance to be something in the west the minute 4kids got their hands on it. I have accepted this and so has a few others. It's you guys and Demarco dragging it into the unwarranted limelight that need to let go.
>"Let's replace One Piece with Spice and Wolf or Fairytale! :DDDD"
I'd prefer Trigun or Kenshin or better yet; YuYu Hakusho.
>"Dude Champloo sucks xD Rating are tanking"
Yeah, but I'll watch it anyway.
You bet it is.
>"Dude Champloo sucks xD Rating are tanking"
Champloo is good, but the ratings are crap because most of Toonami's audience has seen it already. DeMarco of all people should know better, but he's too busy gushing about how it's one of his favorite shows.
It is, especially when compared to a year ago.
Nah, it's all good.
Age of the internet and you shit cunts still care about what plays on tv? :\
>replace OP with S&W or Fairy Tail
Literally no one is saying this not ironically.
>Champloo is tanking
One week isn't something to go on, but have a look at this weeks ratings and you see that has some truth to it. All the cheap shit Funi has and they pick a rerun because MUH WATANABE.
People may say M&H was boring, and I don't really disagree, but it pulled respectable numbers every week because most of the viewers haven't seen it before. In the Internet age, being a rerun block will kill it quick
Hey look, the guy in charge doesn't have any worries!
i guess no one showed him the ratings for this week!
Yeah, but he fucked up when deciding to rerun it at the beginning of the block, instead of putting DBZ Kai there when it arrived.
Also, any word on Funi planning on dubbing the Buu Saga of Kai? We've got another year before the end of the Androids, and no more English Kai
>From a popularity and ratings standpoint, One Piece loses on both fronts
Uh....then what's this?
Damn, actual dialogue in threads, you got me there.
Yeah literally anything else would do. I don't understand why they'd show shit they've played before.
I feel like the people who vie for shows on Toonami are the wrong types who take the time to go through the Adult Swim forums
and RWBY fans.
Anything classic or anything new and not poorly written like Space Dandy would pull a straight 180 for Toonami.
Probably embarking on actual adventures.
What did One Piece do to you, bro? Kill your dog? You take your Saturday Night Rerun Hour too seriously.
Thanks Americans. Now we'll never get our own giant Shirahoshi waterslide.
Fags like you make me sick. I bet you're one of those morons that thing K-on or some shitty slice of life might make it.
Yea that's true, that choice is on him
Anyway, one would assume that dub is in progress, however there hasn't been a peep about it in years which is concerning. If Kai does end without more being dubbed, it's almost guaranteed Demarco starts it over from episode 1
You mean it was painstakingly handcrafted by the wealthiest, most successful, and most dedicated comic book artist in the world at the expense of his own health?
He literally works himself into the hospital to please the adoring masses.
Did you not see this image you absolute retarded fuck?
Do you have no reading comprehension at all? ON TOONAMI AND ONLY ON TOONAMI One Piece is failing ratings wise. It doesn't matter that the manga sells well IN JAPAN. In regards to this shitty dubbed anime block, One Piece is a failure
>there are people in this thread actively defending One Piece even when these abysmal ratings
I bet you guys aren't even watching it either. Why keep it when we could have better shit with reasonable ratings?
>sells well IN JAPAN
Try the WORLD, chuckles.
>Plus, I think you mean the best selling "Manga" in Japan.
One Piece is the Guiness World Record holder for most comic books sold worldwide by a single author. Could at least use google to make sure you're not saying something stupid on 4chan?
We aren't seeing the proof.
>2:30a One Piece (r) 664 0.30 386
This isn't the ratings of a world wide seller. A rerun of a less popular series just beat it's premiere here. That's like saying Family Guy will be a ratings hit in Japan because of it's ratings here.
>This isn't the ratings of a world wide seller.
No, but it's the ratings of an episode that everyone saw 8 years ago airing at 2:30am on a fucking Saturday.
How fucking stupid are you ratings-watchers? Who gives a shit? It's just a block of anime that you've all seen already.
Those fans are dead. Early on when everyone hated it except for a small few they were a pretty easy going group provided you didn't mention the 4Kids dub, which to their credit a lot of them were able to laugh at, but when the Whitebeard War arc started up and all the bandwagon jumping began the ship was sunk.
Oda himself even admitted that the series Naruto is more popular than One Piece in other countries. That came straight from the Horse's mouth. One Piece is a smash hit in Japan but everywhere else it's considered mediocre.
>Its the most pirated
>Gold Roger's treasure is hidden in the internet
It was free to watch legally for the longest time dub and sub too. One Piece's ratings are low because these episodes are eight years old and its fanbase doesn't give a fuck about supporting a TV airing when they're busy fighting other battles like convincing Bandai to release games or trying to get FUNimation to license the older movies.
You are a real dense motherfucker, aren't you? Any other circumstance would get One Piece booted off the air. You should be thankful Toonami is made for the fans because if this was a business deal like other networks/blocks, One Piece would have been taken off on it's 4th run at most. What is it about this you are not understanding? So you better care about the "stupid" ratings watchers because if it falls too short you'll this show cut if some suit says to.
>being mad that Oda is a multi-millionaire from drawing comics about pirates
>being mad that Oda has a mansion bigger than most movie stars' homes
>being mad that Oda is married to this
>being mad that Oda has children that love him
>being mad that Oda is one of the most respected artists in the world and can make any woman's panties soaked in an instant
I mean, COME ON ODA, IT'S 2016!
Stop making millions having anime, theme parks, restaurants, and stage shows made of your ugly ugly drawings! Because anon on 4chan said so!
Everyone's just being a big baby about hopping on board the One Piece ship, like Franky was.
Once we crush their balls, they'll come around.
Hey man, it's fine if you like shit, no one is saying you can't like shit. But you should at least know that it's terrible looking.
If japan has taught me anything, it's to assume that any person they take a photo of is actually a man. So I'm going to say that that is a man, mostly because it looks like a man.
>people get so uptight that their show, that they've already seen all the episodes of, isn't doing well in its time slot, and is being suggested as being dropped.
holy shit, are your normal threads this autistic?
What's wrong with One Piece? Have you ever tried reading it? It sells well for a reason.
I don't get what their problem is either. They already watched all the episodes subbed. It being on Toonami should be small fray on their agenda. I can understand wanting it on Toonami for exposure but that phase has already flown by with what it's showing with it's ratings.
Ok, then why do the other equally or older shows in the same circumstances pull decent ratings then.
Reminder that the timeslot isn't to blame, OP started out 90 minutes earlier but had to be moved down gradually due to subpar numbers
Nothing that gave us Space Dandy is a mistake, anon. In fact, for all the shit it's given us, I'd say that it's worth it for:
>Reviving Jack (I think Toonami existing as a platform for it is part of the reason it's happening)
>Some fucking hilariously awful moments in shitty anime like SAO being laughed at as a group in the General
And honestly, overall, there's been quite a few straight-up good shows on the block since the revival, and personally, I'd never seen many of them before (Soul Eater, Michiko & Hatchin, Casshern Sins, and currently Champloo, for example), so that was a good experience.
Are you implying these episodes of One Piece aren't in the same boat?
Look, the main issue here is OP will NEVER end its Toonami run. That slot is gone forever. Swapping it out for shorter shows helps combat stagnation, and with its mediocre ratings not many will complain
Dandy would have happened anyway. Intruder 2 was a mediocre disappointment that was just used as a canon excuse for Demarco to do less work. Jack is probably the only thing Toonami has helped with, and we have no clue if it will be good or not yet
>Are you implying these episodes of One Piece aren't in the same boat?
You could say that, but they really aren't, since the idiots are literally asking to be nostalgia pandered.
>Yu Yu Hakusho
You fucking serious, mate?
>Look, the main issue here is OP will NEVER end its Toonami run.
Toonami actively helped fund Dandy, if I recall, and got a really good Simuldub to go with it. Without Toonami, it may not have had as much money, and the dub would definitely have come out a while later (if at all) and might not have been as great as it was.
Guys I think I have found a pattern. OP pulls shit ratings weekly, but has done slightly better than KLK so no one really talked about it. This week KLK did slightly better, and the thread is in an uproar. The same thing happened when AoT was doing better than OP.
Sure most of its bait, from both sides, but when the show after OP pulls higher ratings, shitposting increases immensely
I don't accept what one fag posted for the block as what the whole thread ones. People suggest that nostalgia shit for every slot, and as we see with Champloo, it kills the block
No, both sides are responsible today, not only for casting bait, but for taking it too.
>NEVER EVER CANCEL ONE PIECE JAPAN LOVES IT EVEN THOUGH THIS ISNT JAPAN AND THE RATINGS SHOW AMERICANS ARENT FOND
And as you said, the typical 1 peace sux bait with no substance to it that people are still taking
This is a very accurate picture actually
>Toonami was in the grave
>fans do necromancy to bring it back from the grave
>Demarco does everything in his power to put it back in the grave
As a neutral party on the issue, here are my observations
>they are fans of the series
Pretty obvious, if it's your favorite show you wouldn't want it cancelled.
>they think it airing will be its big breakthrough in the west
I don't know how people can still hold on to this hope, it's airing at 2:30am once per week, and in 3 years has not shown any signs of finally getting that western breakthrough
>they figure it blocks something worse
Let's face it, if they do pull it, 1 of 2 things happen. One, the block gets cut again. With the recent ratings for the entire second half, I wouldn't be surprised. Or 2, Demarco being the cheap shit he is, grabs another long runner, more than likely being Fairy Tail
That's about it
You know how every week there's people who assure the entire thread that TONIGHT will be the night that One Piece is amazing, and every single time it's mediocre as usual? Those are the people who want it to stay. They mistake hype parts of the manga, that usually happen within 12 pages, will be decent in the anime, that has to make those 12 pages into 22 minutes
Because even at the anime's grueling pace, it's still easier to get through on an episode-by-episode basis than Shippuden, which is only really enjoyable on those rare occasions when a canon episode gets a budget boost.
On a related note, it's funny how people always give One Piece's ratings such shit, but the drop between Shippuden and the show before it has always, ALWAYS, been drastically larger than the gap between Shippuden and One Piece. Granted this week that's a bit deserved since KLK scored higher, but you never see anyone calling for Shippuden to be removed despite steeper ratings drops.
Every time i look at Oda's life i wanna die.
If I'm being completely honest my wanting the show to succeed in the west so that it insures games and other merch gets localized is the only reason I even watch Toonami.
Yeah, I've seen those episodes, but I've seen all the other shows as well already and don't even care that much about them since casuals will insure Attack on Titan and Naruto swag for years to come.
And I'd honestly even rather watch its filler than Shippudens. I watch the full block each week and fuck if I can tell you what, if anything, happened on Naruto last saturday.
Well, before being moved down to give the short premiers a better air time, Shitpudding used to pull semi decent ratings, One Piece has done mediocre since day 1.
I don't know why it's even a talking point, the only way either show will be pulled is with absolutely abysmal ratings since Demarco will protect both of them as long as he can. Gonna take a higher up intervention to get either one off the air
But to this day, we don't even know who has the rights. Funi lost out, so I'm thinking that it's in a Hitman! Reborn situation where there is no dub, but streaming rights, which explains how Netflix has most of it.
>he thinks a 2:30am airing on a shitty block will result in companies localizing merch
I'm laughing so hard right now, it'd need to do 1.5mil and up every single week for those companies to even turn their head this way and consider localizing
I dunno, when you factor in that Oda is a workaholic who only gets three hours of sleep, barely spends any time with his family, and has worked himself into exhausting to the point of where he's had to be hospitalized several times last year alone, it's kind of hard to envy his lifestyle.
The rights were sorted out a few months ago. Viz got Hunter x Hunter 2011.
Other equally or older shows have nostalgia on their side.
Look I know it gets thrown out a lot and dismissed just as much but 4kids fucked up One Piece's chances in the west really bad and Toonami didn't help things at all, even when it was back on prime time. They have no problem saying going "Naruto is Uncut Now!" but comparatively it wasn't cut even a third as much as this show was.
There's a reason that people still make meme jokes about the 4kids BITE OF GUM GUM dub every week. That was the first impression, and first impression is the strongest.
And yes, also the art style isn't traditional "anime", so all the kids with deviantart pages and yaoi fangirls are turned off. And those are rather huge chunks of the anime supporting public.
Oh fuck, thanks for correcting me. If I was Funi, I'd be pissed off. They would've been able to get YYH fans to buy the blu-rays and have been okay.
This. In hindsight, they should've started off from episode 1 to shake off the reputation that it had, but that probably would've been worse for everyone longer-term. From the work that Oda has put in, it really seems like OP has more heart behind it compared to Naruto, but such is life. You think this is the last year or will it get snuffed out when Jack finishes?
>>NEVER EVER CANCEL ONE PIECE JAPAN LOVES IT EVEN THOUGH THIS ISNT JAPAN AND THE RATINGS SHOW AMERICANS ARENT FOND
Are you telling me you're NOT fond of One Piece?
Honestly both options would have fucked it, episode 1 would have put us millions of miles behind, there's already no hope of catching up from our current spot. But starting midway through, no one formed any attachment to the series
Anyway, Toonami has its ups and downs. Ratings are bad this week, but nowhere near panic tier. If these numbers are a recurring trend, that's when it's time to worry.
That said, I do think Champloo will be a liability its entire run. Whatever they announce to replace AgK is really gonna have to hit it out of the park to get the hype train moving again
Personally, I'm enjoying One Piece's run on Toonami. I'm a big One Piece fan, I don't have to stay up too late, and I actually think it's a really good dub, so it's good background noise.
I mean, the only show I really paid full attention to on Toonami was Michiko and Hatchin, because it's the only one I haven't seen before. Well, and Akame ga Kill, but I'm really not interested in it.
Oh god it's true OP fans are fucking delusional. I really thought it was just fun to troll while pretending to be a OP fan.
I still don't know how to feel about the fact that despite the manga being so popular world-wide, I just can't fucking enjoy it. Everytime I try and go back and get into it, it's like when I tried to force myself into Homestuck
The fucking people in here who still think it's going to catch on the west any Saturday now or that watching it on a non-Nielsen tv supports anything.
I'm not comparing it quality wise. I'm comparing the fact that both have loud fandoms that praise it, yet any attempt to bring myself in leads me still not liking it.
I've tried for years. I think every year I make an attempt with the manga to see if this read will get me hooked. Then I close the tab and remind myself I probably will never like it.
The tone, the art style, the feeling that it may be a never ending series like Detective Conan. They don't make me hate it alone, but they don't endear me to it And for whatever reason, the first few chapters just don't hook me. And yet I'm told I can't skip around with the series.
>mfw I have a Nielson box
>I make sure my TV is off during One Piece every week
Well, what kind of tone DOES appeal to you? Because One Piece has it all.
>And yet I'm told I can't skip around with the series.
Who told you can't skip around? You can skip around all you want. If you want the story to make sense and want to know and love the characters, I don't recommend it.
>the feeling that it may be a never ending series like Detective Conan.
It's definitely going to end. There is an ending and the journey is getting there.
Oda's wife has bigger milk motels than your wives.
Don't fight over One Piece. Just appreciate it.
The 8:30 slot seems to have some other major problem that causes it to do terribly regardless of what's on there.
Just look at this week, it did 150k less than the slot following it and both were King of the Hill. That's just not right, I tell you what.
>banned saturday for telling /pol/ to fuck off
please anon, who is this qt?
>shit is tar black
go to a doctor anon.
>doesn't know chain
I have been slacking on my Kekkai sensen posting
no worries anon, just that I'm shit. Looks like fun
good show, it would be perfect for toonami
sadly a lot of great shows have yet to reach toonami
Toonami needs more milfs
not necessarily this one though I'd like it
>Start watching subbed FT
>like it more and more with each passing episode
You know what fuck it. Ive seen more action, comedy, story, etc.... In the first 50 episodes of Fairy Tail than One Piece/Naruto combined in the past 2 years. It may be more cliched but its entertaining as fuck. Maybe DeMarco should beg Funi gor Fairy Tail.
Careful anon, don't
become overly confident in your abilities by attacking a far superior opponent thus leading to your decapitation at the hands of said opponent and also losing the tatsumibowl
a shame, she truly deserved to live. If only she weren't in such a shit show
I like alot of tones, but OP just seems too goofy.
Anons on 4chan, randoms on forums, heck you just told me that I'm not going to get attached to characters if I skip around. But I'm already not attached to Luffy and Nami after 10 chapters (though I do like Zoro)
And One Piece has already outlived Naruto, I know Oda said that getting to the ending is what motivates him to keep writing, but the massive amount of chapters doesn't do me favors in wanting to get into it.
But when anon, WHEN? Toonami needs some Ikuhara in it's veins.
wow now anon, never said waifu. You'd be nuts to waifu anyone in the show
Don't compare to a year ago, compare to the rest of the short block nights. This was one of the lowest rated non marathon nights. Could be an off week, could be a new trend caused by Champloo. When we get this weeks numbers next Tuesday we will know
it just looks so terrible, not only that but the action and gags clearly ape off of dragon ball, but is done in such an over the top goofy way that makes Dragon Ball look like a moody angst piece.
>Not waifuing qt ice warlord that draws her own fanart
I personally Love OP and even I can understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. Not that it helps that Oda trusted the worst animation company in japan (barring that one company that made gundo Musashi, I guess) to animate his series.
Has One Piece actually won any awards? Has Oda actually won any awards for it? I've read people in this thread say that he's the most respected or liked, or whatever artist in Japan, and at times it kind of seems like they're just making stuff up.
you people need to stop being so damn uptight about this stuff.
Success isn't respect or admiration for the author though. As far as I could tell One Piece won one award in 2012 and that's really it.
Really I'm just wondering where those comments come from of his being greatly respected or loved, or what have you. Specifically from his peers, since I think we all know that fans are more often than not a detriment to creators.
Toriyama and him seem to be on good terms. Him and Kishimoto seem to have had a friendly rivalry going. That's all I really know.
Also I disagree. One piece has been the best selling manga in japan on several years. It doesn't really matter how many awards it makes. It makes a lot of money so I'd say it's damn successful.
Best girl in best outfit
But I never asked if it was successful, no where did I ask if it was successful, or say it wasn't. Awards are more a measure of critical acclaim, rather than monetary success.
To put things more bluntly and over simplified, as Oda made a Citizen Kane, or an Avengers?
oh definitely an avengers. I'm not even gonna pretend it's not. One piece isn't ground breaking. It's got a lot of flaws and it's far from a perfect series. But I doubt that's what he set out to do in the first place. One piece simply is one the many shounens in japan that seems to have its own charm to it. You become endeered to the world and characters but if you were to talk to me about how deep the characters are or how amazingly written or paced it is, I'd only say it's "Pretty good" or even just "it's not bad".
One Piece is a manga that simply succeeded in what it tried to do. But critically, I'd say it's nothing to special. To be fair, though. There's not a lot of weekly shonen manga I'd say are.
Did you really need to ask a question you could have had answered with one quick google search?
The One Piece manga was a finalist for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize three times in a row from 2000 to 2002, with the highest number of fan nominations in the first two years.
The German translation of its 44th volume won the Sondermann audience award in the international manga category, a yearly comic award given in seven categories by the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Frankfurter Rundschau, Spiegel Online and Comicforum, at the Frankfurt Book Fair Comics Centre in 2005.
In a 2008 poll by Oricon, Japanese teenagers elected it the most interesting manga.
One Piece was nominated for Favorite Manga Series in Nickelodeon Magazine's 2009 Comics Awards.
In 2012, One Piece won the 41st Japan Cartoonists Association Award Grand Prize, alongside Kimuchi Yokoyama's Nekodarake Nice.
Da Vinci magazine named One Piece number three on their list of 2013's top manga, which was voted on 4,619 professional book reviewers, bookstore employees, and Da Vinci readers.
On June 15, 2015, it was announced that Eiichiro Oda and One Piece had set the Guinness World Record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author."
Even though I appreciate One Piece's success and can understand it's high status in Japan and in the Anime/Manga community. The argument here is that to the western audience it's trying to attract has clearly no interest in it and that is shown with it's American T.V. ratings. But honestly, it being taken off Toonami is not going to dent it's popularity at all. If it's sales we declining in Japan that would be something to really worry about.
Though, I would say the reason it sells so much is BECAUSE it's paced and written better than every other shonen manga out there.
I'm not even gonna pretend that Dragonball, Naruto, or Hunter x Hunter have character moments or themes as well written as One Piece. Nothing else in it's 'demographic' even comes close, dude. What are you smoking?
I mean, it speaks volumes that American fans thought Fishman Island was lame because most of them let the themes and overall point of it go right over their heads and could only talk about the punching.
>No. 90% of the hate boils down to the horrifically bad and drawn out pacing.
I'd say that was it but you guys don't bitch half as much about Shippuden, you didn't with Bleach, and even DBZ Kai which supposedly has all the padding taken out, still hasn't actually blown up Namek yet.
So yeah, I have a hard time believing it's just the pacing. The pacing isn't great, but other shows get a pass on it all the time.
You know you have to use sources on wikipedia? That's what those numbers in brackets are in the articles.
And why would you trust 4chan shitposters for literally anything? How stupid are you?
I'd argue that Naruto is actually paced worse because when Naruto does filler, it gives him bullshit training arcs. Which never actually amount to new skills or growth, because they can't deviate from canon. One Piece does filler too, but at least they don't dress it up as the characters training new skills that they'll never use.
And it bugs me because Naruto had the potential to be the better series of the two by far.
Okay, fair enough.
>We were on a team for about a month and the whole time you spent it calling me an idot. Then you tried to kill me a dozen times. That makes us brothers! Remember that one time where I saw you sitting by the creek that was never referenced until this moment?
Naruto had better concepts but the follow through was FUBAR. Neji ended up being right and that's a narrative crime of the highest order.
Part of One Piece's problem in the west was the 4kids localization, yes.
The other part is that the tweens like edgy ninja-wizards more than goofy-looking light-hearted adventure pirates.
>In the first 50 episodes of Fairy Tail than One Piece/Naruto combined in the past 2 years.
I can barely remember any of the action in FT, that's how "exciting" it is. Your tastes is just awful.
I'd argue it's better than naruto, I guess. I'd say dragonball definitely has character moments on par with one piece although usually they tend to be smaller moments and not the main focus.
Here's the thing though. I'm not comparing One Piece to other Shounen. I'm looking at one piece critically as a piece of art.
Fishman island has a cool theme, but once you get into it, it's just racism. Like it doesn't really go much deeper than that and I'm not even sure if they could've. Hell. Super Mario Super show had a racism story. I like that Oda even had the balls to tackle a story like in a weekly manga for young boys and it does very well to set the tone for the whole arc but that's about it. The strawhats are basically simplistic stereotypes until the story demands their character have a strong opinion about something. Everything is very simplistic and easy to understand which is fine because it's made for young boys and big character moments tend to only come at times when it's necessary or changes something significant.
Fairy Tail has more fap bait though.
Actually now that I think about it that'd probably mandate a few edits and cuts, especially later on.
You know the series is heavy with the stuff when even the characters go "I've seen you naked a billion times, why are you freaking out?"
>someone actually thinks Naruto has better characterization than One Piece
One Piece actually gives you reasons to like characters other than 'they have cool powers'
She was the only assassin who actually acted assassiny.
But she crossed a line killing pybro.
Of course, AGK's subtitle might as well be, "Nothing good will last more than a week."
>plus if viz wants to stay on the block it means hunter x hunter more likely than not
Demarco will likely go after Sailor Moon than HxH. That show takes far too long to pick up and drags just as much as One Piece, its another show that gets overhyped.
I think even sonic fans hate sonic X.
That being said I'm sure they'd definitely watch it.
That's not fair. Naruto gives you reasons to like characters too. They're just not the main characters, so they only show up in filler or once every five years. That's the real problem.
Make the show about like, Shikamaru, Hinata, and Rock Lee. Then it'd be ten times better.
Sailor Moon is locked down on Hulu. Chances of a Toonami run are next to nil.
I'm honestly inclined to believe the Champloo pickup was Funimation dicking around and not taking their 15+ year relationship with Turner seriously anymore.
then you're not helpful to me.
so episode 329, a perfect number.
So here's the question. What should Toonami actually be? What is its main goal? Should there be an emphasis on newer shows, or older ones? Right now it's sitting at Three mainstay shows, one new show, and one rerun show.
As a viewer, this doesn't look very appealing to me. One could say that DBZ, Naruto, and One Piece are legacy shows. They're been airing since 2005 (or 1998) that it's tradition to have them there. But what this means is that, for the rest of Toonami's lifespan (however long it may be) you will only have an hour on the block to devote to anything new, half an hour if one show is always going to be rerunning of an older show. Toonami will die before it gets to the current episode of One Piece or Naruto. I'd rather have new shows in the place of the legacy ones, personally, but costs more than likely won't allow it.
Is OPM as hot an item for Toonami as Titan was?
The issue with long runner legacy shows is that we're really far behind in them. Anyone who cares about these shows is already caught up, or at least further than we are now. A smart network would at least skip filler episodes so that the story moves quicker. If toonami had the funds or pull they'd ideally be showing two of the mainstays nightly so that we'd catch up faster. Of course then it'd be on funimation and viz to start dubbing one piece/naruto/DBZ at the pace of a simuldub and considering how large the cast is for that, including one piece, I'm sure they're not in any hurry to do that.
one thing I'd like to add is that the long runner legacy shows have a lot of filler, and showing only 1 episode per week really slow things down.
I remember they used to show 1 hour of OP or Naruto per week, that sort of works, but when they had most of the night.
They could probably cut a deal for the DIC/Cloverway Sailor Moon dub. God knows it's better than Crystal and I'm sure they can get it cheap. Especially since it's money that Toei could make off a franchise who's big revival turned out to be a HUGE flop of epic proportion.
>They could probably cut a deal for the DIC/Cloverway Sailor Moon dub
BREAKING: Looks like we can rule Garo and Rage of Bahamut Genesis out for airing on Toonami any time soon.
When One Piece returned to Toonami, Funimation should have tossed in a couple of clip show specials recapping the series up to the start of the Toonami return episode as part of the deal. Air the clip shows as specials THEN start running the main series, to get everyone caught up. `
This. Until Funi shows otherwise we can't count on them for new stuff anymore. I'd even be genuinely surprised if we get AoT S2, because you know damn well the price will be even higher than the first
Also is anyone else getting 2 word captchas instead of house numbers? Been like this for a few days, cookie deletion didn't change it
The key to fixing these ratings is right in front of their face, why won't they take it?
We are going to make it you fuck. Just believe in the me that believes in me.
>You will never witness episode 34 with Toonami General
>you will never witness Nanami Episodes with Toonami General
>you will never witness the Ending of the Movie with Toonami General
It hurt like 1000 swords of hate
If AS even allowed you to buy 3 and a half hours of their airtime once per week, how far would that set you back? Atleast a couple hundred million I'd assume
I'd suggest just donating to Toonami, but that would still leave Demarco in charge who is the cause of most of the problems. Or would Demarco's love of shekels make you his pawn since you would be such a large benefactor?
>has Utena ever been on it?
Never, it would have probably never passed the censors (at least in America since it aired on a childrens time slot in Japan [Yes, even episdoe 34] and aired in some parts of Spain), but that's why I feel it's so perfect for it despite it's infamous dub (at least amoung the community, it's actually pretty standard for the time). Specially since it's kinda a "known but still cult" anime that came out on that generation of anime Toonami became famous for airing, so it has nostalgic appeal. And even if I don't wanna admit it,
it would be perfect to get those tumblr viewers the block seems to depend on.
>go to gas station for smokes
>line is long as hell
jesus christ, the lotto people are making bank right now, and the person in line told me that he went to another gas station and the machine was not working
It's still a "big anime form that Era" that a lot of Oldtaku love to talk endlessly about
(me included)and it did come out in DVD and was (relativily) pretty popular in that format.
