Guardians of the Galaxy is leaps and bounds above the other two films, though Ant-Man itself is far superior to The Winter Soldier.

Guardians was a nearly perfect movie. Stood on its own, was massively entertaining, had a moral and a heart, it was a gorgeous action-comedy that worked flawlessly.

Ant-Man was a bit more muddled than that. It had a heart for sure, and it had something to say, but much of that got lost in the need to tie it all into the Marvel universe. The 20 minute or so fight with Falcon being the most egregiously unnecessary addition to a film in recent memory.

The Winter Soldier, in my opinion, is one of the worst Marvel films. While its problems pale in comparison to those of, say, Thor 2, it does almost nothing right.

Winter Soldier starts off strong as a noir spy thriller and mystery movie, but then hands the answer to the mystery to both the audience and the main characters within the first 30 minutes. After that it's a string of fairly boring and predictable action setpieces. For fuck's sake, they actually end the threat to the world with 30 more minutes of runtime left, sucking any and all tension out of the "climactic" fight that effects absolutely nothing and you know both participants will survive.

Seriously, I will never understand why half of /co/ slobbers all over Winter Soldier's cock. The first film was vastly superior.

Mystery I can give you, but no tension? As much as it's been hyped on this board, the fight between Cap and Bucky on the streets of DC was one of the most tense moments in any Marvel film so far. The fight aboard the third Project Insight ship was a great final fight for the movie.

A good performance could have hammered in those one dimensional lines and made him seem like a legitimate threat instead of a vague stock plot device. Tons of cape movies are forgetting that the heroes need to overcome obstacles to be heroes, getting the villains right is fucking crucial.

Far more problematic are the major flaws in the story's structure (revealing the mystery way too early, resolving the plot well before the climactic action sequence)
