Well, we don't really know how being a Maiden works. We know it's "magic", in that it's not like Aura/Semblance or Dust and seems to not have any hard limits on use like either, but at the same time, it was clearly limited by Amber's ability to like, aim and control it.

She might have won the fight if she'd started off at full Maiden rather than wait for her Aura to burn down first.

I feel they really need to explain exactly WHY and WHAT makes a Maiden much more powerful than the average hunter. Sure, Amber can control the weather, but we've seen tons of other super powers in the show; Ruby has super speed, Pyrrha controls metals, Yang can hulk out, Blake, Sun and Flynt can all create clones, Nora can absorb electricity, Jaune can make a super armor, Emerald can make hallucination, and Weiss and Glynda's glyph almost seem broken with how powerful they can be, Weiss in particular with how she can implement them, from casting Haste, to creating giant blocks of ice, and she'll eventually gain a summoning power.

So what makes Maidens special?

Well, as far as we know, there are 4 Maidens at any time. And the only way to lose track of the mantle of power is if the girl thinks of an old lady or a guy and we run the roulette.

Cinder and co attacked Amber - when one presumes they could arrange to attack any of the four, they're supposed to be out spreading gifts to the world or whatever - even in secret. So they probably picked Amber because she was the least experienced, powerful, or skilled. Or her abilities regardless of the power were something Cinder could plan to counter.

We see Amber's Aura visibly break, then she continues spamming shit until she takes the arrow to her back.
It's likely that prior to being a Maiden, Amber was just that. Average. She also seems fairly young, so it's possible she didn't know the extent of her powers, or wasn't very proficient yet.
Cinder and co targeted her for a reason, and I doubt it was just luck.

Well, M&K kind of covered this on the livestream. Aura and Semblance come from the same source - the soul or whatever. So presumably if your Aura is beat to shit, your semblance will probably not go as smooth. Depending on the type of Semblance there's also a lot of concentration involved and it burns your stamina up fast.

Dust is a substance which, while narratively functional as magic, isn't magic as it has it's own specific rules and functions based on the type, and is at least somewhat used up over time.

Magic is something else, a power which isn't linked with Aura or Dust and doesn't appear to have their limitations, nor does it necessarily run out of power. We just don't have enough experience with the subject to understand if it's properly unlimited, and the only thing holding Amber back was as much power as she felt she needed to use, if it's only unlimited in the sense that you can use it as long or as often as you like but you can only output so much at any one time, or maybe even if the different Maidens have different powersets.

Given this is a global conspiracy, we're unlikely to get those exact details until somebody in the cast actually goes 100% Maiden.

They repeatedly SAY how badly the faunus are treated, but it's almost never seen going on. If they had shown something, like signs around town saying NO FAUNUS, or separating their seating in the arena, they wouldn't even have to say it and we'd get the message.

Another example, Cinder's plan. There's no indication what the fuck she's trying to pull because they're not giving enough information. It's clear why they wouldn't want to say it up front, but they could show us something- like if her plan is to take down the com towers, show blueprints/maps of them, or if her plan is to assassinate Ozpin or someone, show her spying on her target- some kind of hint as to what she's trying. To their credit, they did it with Penny when she was shown looking over her technical specs, so we can assume that she'll be involved somehow.-and that worked, and it's paying off because it's got most of us pretty hype for the next ep.

Long story short, if you're going to imply something, you need to give enough information for the implication to be made and RWBY just doesn't give enough information, even with the WoR shorts.

Okay, there's a couple different interpretations of the theory. The idea is to make a more immersive story and not bog down the reader (or in this case the watcher) with unnecessary description and exposition which detracts from what you're actually trying to do.

Your analogy is good, that's what Hemingway meant with his "iceberg theory", the author can plainly state few things but do so in a way you can tell and even get the deeper implications there. People just tend to take this as literal creative writing gospel.

From what folks have said, monty had "plans" that was the exact wording for 10 volumes worth of material and that the three seasons we've seen so far would make 1 "volume". The thing is we don't know the exact details of that, or how much he really fleshed out. Judging by how much scrambling M&K did when they mentioned writing for rwby, I'd wager Monty did not leave much beyond a few major plot points and an outline.

We don't know the antagonists' plans, we don't know the rules of the superpowers everyone has, we don't know why people are participating in an inter-school fighting competition, we don't know why the Grim are such a threat, and we don't know Ozpin and Ironwood's beef beyond "I don't approve of having an entire air fleet over Vale".

Honestly, I always picked up that the implication from the show (backed up by Blake commenting on the nature of the White Fang becoming more militant - that their methods were apparently working) is that we're past the "NO FAUNUS" signs stage and into slightly more subtle oppression.

Blake makes oblique comments about exploitive practices at SDC, and isn't comfortable "coming out" as a Faunus. Velvet is bullied in school by CDRL (who are 1st years) and nobody does anything about it. Weiss makes her own snarky, slightly racist comments. Faunus apparently feel poorly enough about their lot in life to show up en masse to White Fang rallies and listen to Roman of all people.

Sometimes people don't get that "show not tell" doesn't mean that you can't tell your audience facts.

Telling them basic information about the world, such as Faunus being looked down upon, and then including subtle hints of it such as graffiti or segregation in crowds would do wonders to reinforce their writing.

Personally I like the idea of WoR, but I do have to admit that it is a poorly utilized format since they are either completely moot, or reveal stuff that should have been covered in the actual show.

I think they would be better used to expand on things talked about in the show, but nothing necessary to the plot, so if you don't watch them you aren't missing anything. For example, let's say we have one on Atlus, all the important things that matter about Atlas would needed to be explained in-show, but the WoR for it would be an expansion on that information, unnecessary for your understand of the plot, but if you want to know more then here's something for you.

Yeah, I didn't watch any of the WoR vids until this volume and I felt like I was missing a lot. Even if they wanted to use these shorts as a means for exposition, there is easily a way to work it into the episode.

Look at the the time Pyrrha told the story of the four maidens, it was clearly in the WoR style but worked its way into the episode. If they'd do that more often it wouldn't be as much of a cop-out. It'd be sloppy as hell and not remotely professional, but at least it'd be incorporated
