I recently got a subscription to Marvel Unlimited and I'm kind of regretting it. I keep looking for recommendations but nobody can give me anything. I don't want to turn this into some DC vs Marvel shitfling, but DC has some stories that are pretty well known as 'must read' Superman stories, Batman stories, etc. It seems like Marvel doesn't really have many 'essential' stories or runs besides big event stuff.

I tried reading that new Ms. Marvel, and the first few issues actually weren't bad. Then it started getting really overbearing with the whole WE MAKE STARWARS REFERENCES CUZ WE'RE NERDS, SHE WRITES FANFICTION CUZ SHE'S A NERD, ISN'T THAT KOOKY HOW SHE WANTS TO #REBLOG THAT SHE MET #WOLVERINE

THERE ARE HASHTAGS CUZ THAT'S WHAT USED ON THE INTERNETS AND WE'RE ALL NERRRRRDS SO WE KNOW THAT.

if you're looking for a good teenage book, read Runaways or New Mutants v2/New X-Men v2.
Or original New Mutants if you don't mind Claremont.

I know this is a late reply, but really I'm fine with just about anything that's considered exceptionally well done. Preferably more adult than teen oriented, and relatively self contained. I'd like to avoid big crossover stuff like Civil War until I've read some of the good stuff for the individual characters.

Like, I have no idea what I should read for the core Marvel characters. Cap, Thor, Ironman, etc. I'd kind of like to start with them. I've already read a decent amount of Spider-Man and Deadpool but that's it as far as my Marvel history goes.

I've also heard that X-Men is kind of a huge clusterfuck as far as continuity goes, and for anyone besides Wolverine it's hard to find a good story you can enjoy without already having read a bunch of other X-Men stuff. So if that's true I might just put off reading anything X-Men for a while. Any good self contained stories are fine though.
