>Teenage Rebecca Sugar writes fanfiction about Invader Zim getting redeemed, realizing humans are good, and making friends with his former enemies
>when she gets TV show she makes a character that kind of looks and acts a lot like Invader Zim
>After they are the villain for a while she has them getting redeemed, realizing humans are good, and making friends with his former enemies
Are there any other examples of artists creating characters that are essentially wish fulfillment of already existing characters?
The only one I can think of is Bendis literally being able to write wish fulfillment stories about his waifu Kitty Pryde.
>Are there any other examples of artists creating characters that are essentially wish fulfillment of already existing characters?
Hell, a lot of ancient Greek plays and later literature connected to mythology or legend (say the King Arthur stories) was LITERALLY fanfiction wish fulfillment about existing characters.
But I imagine there's much more of this going on then we'll ever notice.
>artificial construct reared from creation to be absolutely subservience is captured for a few weeks, wooed by some idiot fat kid, turns her back on and insults her lord and master
That is atrocious fucking writing. Way to build up tension just to rip it out.
OP, just wait until you realize that almost everyone's acting is really just a re-hash of some older actor's acting.
We all of us grew up with vaudville characters, even though vaudville was stone dead by the time our grandparents were born.
To be honest, I think there are nothing but examples.
Basically everyone who creates something is building off a criticism of something else they like. In Sugar's case, she liked Invader Zim but not its cynicism and negative portrayal of humanity. So she made something more suited to her tastes.
Ruby and Sapphire don't act like Edd and Eddy. However, I think it does come from a belief that opposites build the strongest relationships because they're those attracted to one another and they go greater lengths to make it work. Shit, look at Rose and Greg. One's from earth with his head in the stars and the other is from space with her feet firmly planted in earthly reality. Connie and Steven despite getting along exceptionally are vastly different as well.
I think for every single Usagi Yojimbo story that Stan comes up with himself there's at least one other that's him doing an homage or retelling of something. The man wants to take every samurai and Japanese folklore story and turn it into comic form (Stan if you're reading this: shine on your crazy diamond).
Also Terra was based on everything Wolfman and Perez thought made Kitty Pryde unbearable.
Seeing Sugar makes me happy that Jhonen didn't give a shit about being "progressive" and instead cared about obesity jokes.
I wish I owned the first two New Teen Titans omnibuses that collect everything from the start up to Judas Contract. I got them from a library and read those over two days and it was one of the best experiences.
I think it worked. Peridot loves to talk and thinks she's smarter than everyone else. She probably thought her conversation with Yellow Diamond was going to go like:
>"I have some ideas on how we can better utilize this planet's resources."
>"I am excited to hear these things, Peridot! Tell me all your ideas, and also my shirt opened?"
Basically yeah, Peridot has a huge ego and when YD didn't masturbate furiously to her brilliant ideas right then and there she just thought, "fuck this." She probably hadn't interacted with her before and could believe Homeworld valued her amazingness, then she finally talks to YD and she shits on her, and Peri also sees that YD is kind of illogical and simple-minded ("gggrrrr me smash planet") from her POV which shatters her faith.
It's like if Zim was allowed to be a little less crushingly stupid, and actually accepted that his mission was a lie AND that the Tallest are retards who only care about stuffing their faces with snacks, maybe this might happen.
Given the angle of the pic, its hard to determine whether or not they touch. So what's the verdict? Is it gay porn or not?
>mfw I realize Peridot x Ronaldo would literally be ZIM x Dib
So was that actually a name Rebecca used back then? Cuz in that AMA she did she said she was Scraps, but I thought she was just joking since there was a shitposter in the SU threads that went by that name.
JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth originated from Norse fan fiction he wrote in which he and his wife were characters.
Except Dib is a thousand times more enjoyable and endearing as a character than Ronaldo.
I never bothered to watch Steven Universe and most likely never will.
Is Peridot really just a female Zim or is it a baseless complaint?
Essentially these. Once people realize it's literally impossible to create anything original any more (and that now everyone's aware of this due to the total media saturation the internet has brought) they can relax and stop getting mad about unoriginality.
It's not a 100% comparison but pretty close. She never came to Earth to hide among us in order to conquer us, and she's not as flat-out stupid as Zim. Her problem is mostly being socially retarded and not understanding the nuances of human interaction, which she's slowly picking up.
Her personality is pretty Zim-like, though.
Direct quotes like pic related make it clear that the creators are very aware of the resemblance, but obviously her character is moving in a very, very different direction now. I don't think the resemblance is a problem, just an interesting side note.
(And yes, I realize GIR said it and not ZIM, but it's a very recognizable quote from the show and overall the scene was very ZIM like.)
Art inspires art, so probably every major character is in some way inspired by another.
When you take from one source it's stealing, when you take from many it's research.
Dunno about him but I feel breddy gud.
tfw fapped to Tak and Zim, currently fapping to Peridot
>implying that doesn't make it hotter
Virgil's Aeneid is essentially a fan sequel to Homer's Iliad.
First wave of invading alien species accompanied by brute (who is defeated in the initial encounter) that later becomes a tentative ally and begrudging friend to the hero. Seemingly loyal to space alien boss, eventually tells boss to fuck off and joins the good guys. They're both shorties. The show takes the time to make them the butt of jokes at points. Only differences are color scheme and certain personality traits (Vegeta's not really a technician like Peridot is). Their role in the story and relationship to the hero is pretty much the same. That said, there's much less of a rivalry dynamic between Peri and Steven.
"Nothing in common" is blatantly false.
I've not watched a lot Steven Universe but this thread make me understand that Peridot is inspiration from Vegeta and Invader Zim but Garnet is gay Edd Ed & Eddy but instead lesbian? I am very confused.
Everyone loves a good redemption stoy if it sticks- problem is they always revert back to being villains in the west strangely enough (not in eastern animation though, ex-villains always stay good, must be a difference in taste)
Hopefully this one will. They've spent a significant part of the season building it up, and Peridot burned the hell out of that bridge to the homeworld. Even if she does regret it and decides she really doesn't want to side with the Crystal Gems anymore, she doesn't have a choice.
Exodus is a retcon to make the Israelites look more legitimate.
When these people fled from Egypt, they were likely listed as a small bunch of Canaanite slaves who only heard of Yahwe after they ran across the Sinai and mixed into a group of other Canaanite dissidents who then became Israel.
Later writing is mostly about getting their monotheism on track and erasing the thousand local gods their people still worshipped. Like Yahwe's wife...
>The only one I can think of is Bendis literally being able to write wish fulfillment stories about his waifu Kitty Pryde.
I keep hearing about this but I never get to see any panels or explanations. What's this about?
>Vegeta's not really a technician like Peridot is
Not in the scientific sense but as far as fighting goes Vegeta is thought of as one of the most strategic and "technical" fighters of DBZ. Him overthinking in situations was actually pointed out as a kind of weakness in DBSuper.
The first Crisis on DC was "planed" since the author was a child playing with his toys.
Its actually something really common, that most people here would actually do.
>Teenage Rebecca Sugar writes fanfiction about Invader Zim getting redeemed, realizing humans are good, and making friends with his former enemies
If I remember correctly, Vasquez had that ending planned out for a while.
Zim and Dib were going to have a planetary fight, similar to that one episode where they used planets as their weapons. It was going to end with Zim befriending Dib and him revealing he was an alien or something of that sort.
Yeah, pretty much.
I mean, I still like the show, but this is just such an obviously bad, fanfiction-y plot development. And it does not help that misguided fans are trying to defend this as good writing.
They were a regular race of sexual dimorphism before they started being made in tubes. They smash together their equivalent of XX chromozones enough that you see females in the mix. Jhonen said they are an asexual race now though, reproductive parts have been disabled.
Don't touch my faggot-ship with such impure ideas.
>Vasquez had that ending planned out
At first it sounded like a shit ending, but:
>and him revealing he was an alien
That DOES sound very IZ, Zim making his dramatic reveal, Dib facepalms, Gaz sitting in the kitchen keeps slurping her juice and playing vidya, and GIR freaking out in disbelief.
>tfw you like the show, but only in the exact same way you like really cringey diabetes inducing fanfiction as a guilty pleasure
>deviantart cringe crones are making tv shows now
Better list what SU is NOT a fan-fiction of. Of course, not everything is a perfect fit, but I think these are undeniable influences:
>energetic, enthusiatic boy goes on magical adventures with his harem of mothers
Kid Goku meets Sailor Moon? I know Ian admitted they've played with harem tropes
>being the blue girl is suffering
Every anime ever, Evangelion and Utena come to mind. I'm half-way through Utena, but the brown-blue girl seems to be artificially built like Rei, so it would not surprise me if SU dwelled into Lapis's purpose and imprisonment, and the people who controlled her life
>indian love interst
>magical sky sword-fighting arena
Utena, and one fighitng scene was directly lifted from it
Utena, pedal to the metal
>Color scheme, ROSES FUCKING EVERYWHERE
>a space-faring race, their power unchallenged throughout the cosmos, all powerfull tall leaders seen as the epitome of the race, mass produced conquerors
Invader Zim. The gems are a non-joke Irken empire, though it's simplyfied as planetary destruction instead of economic imperialism that lets the others live
>the tinfoil is right, he's just too loud for his own good
Ronaldo is a love letter to IZ's Dib
People say EE&E, but I don't know enough to talk. I do know about Sugar's yaoi turned yuri, though
what am i missing?
>Ronaldo is a love letter to IZ's Dib
Ronaldo is a parody of Dib, if anything. Ronaldo's entire shtick is that he completely misinterprets the truth and all the mysteries and conspiracies he believes in could be completely solved by asking people who live in the same small town as him.
>a space-faring race, their power unchallenged throughout the cosmos, all powerfull tall leaders seen as the epitome of the race, mass produced conquerors
This also reminds me of Transformers. I feel like SU and Transformers have a lot more similarities than SU and Invader Zim
That's mostly my understanding of it as well, except for one detail: As I understand it, there was no *literal* flight from Egypt; the proto-Israelites were never physically slaves IN Egypt so much as that their Canaanite culture was a vassal state to Egypt and so they construed themselves as sort of metaphorically slaves to Egypt. The peasant-folk of Canaan rose up against their feudal lords and killed them for serving these Egyptian foreigners, thus escaping Egyptian "slavery" and also "destroying" Canaan, creating their own monotheistic version of the previous religion including, as you allude, getting rid of the worship of their god's wife, Asherah. Though interestingly if you look closely enough, you can still find a number of interesting artifacts of that polytheistic version of the religion embedded in the early part of the bible. Heck, right at the beginning of the bible you have their god saying "Let us create them, man and woman, in our images." And only slightly later you have a magical talking snake trying to persuade Eve to eat of the fruit of wisdom, which is MUCH later retconned as being the devil, but who is never explained in the actual text of Genesis. This makes a lot more sense once you realize that god's wife, Asherah, was a goddess of wisdom who's holy symbol was a snake coiled around a tree.
Rebecca Sugar has stated that Lars and Sadie came from an older project of hers. There's a rumor that they were originally Original Character Do No Steels from one of her Ed, Edd, and Eddy fanfictions.
I have a feeling piccolo will show up sometime soon
George Lucas uses the prequels to do pretty much everything he couldn't do in the first 3
it's weird shit like Boba Fett's helmet which was gonna be originally be a type of stormtrooper, but then he couldn't because of budgetary restraints. So he gets back by making all the clone troopers Boba Fett
There's tons of other shit to it too. I recommend reading Dark Horse's The Star Wars if you want to see just how much of a crazy person George was
goku is rose because they are both dead but not really
garnet is picollo because perma-fusion
yamcha is pearl cause they both start out kinda cool and end up thirsty and alone
i have no idea for amethyst, yajirobe?
If you want to get technical, the gems are genderless.
But Pearl is totally gay for Rose.
Ruby and Sapphire are the gayest ever.
Garnet is a physical manifestation of gay romance.
Peri is either going to go gay for Lapis or Amethyst.
>Comparing Rebecca to Bendis
That's a low blow, even for a /sug/ hater.
Yeah but peridot is autistic levels of devoted to being rational. Assuming that gems, being inorganic rocks, don't suffer from autism, she's clearly some kind of programmed/brainwahsed and you think hw would prioritize sending loyal agents to a rebellious world.
The gems are technically incapable of being gay as they're monogendered. But it's a pretty safe bet that Sucrose used this as a loophole to safely place lesbians on a primetime kids show.
Basically, nobody is actually gay, but they may as well be
Also there's Steven, he's often openly feminine, but that's to be expected consdering his upbringing and there's Connie for him.
Autism is an issue of the brain and the mind, not the body. It's safe to assume that the gem is the "brain" of the body, where all the thinking takes place. Pearl's clearly somewhere else, neurodivergent is a good word for it. I wouldn't place Peridot very far away, if not further along the path. They're both autistic as all hell imo
>Ruby and Sapphire are Eddy and Edd
>That technically means that aren't gay
No it doesn't. What do yo think the definition of gay is? If the gems are all women, and they are sexually attracted to each other, they are gay. They are attracted to people of the same sex. That's the definition of homosexual.
If they only have one "gender", that technically means they don't have a gender.
They don't produce offspring via sexual reproduction. They may have characteristics that we associate with human females, but they are not sexually differentiated within their own race.
They are not gay because they have no gender. They are neither male nor female because the distinction doesn't exist for them. They aren't even biological.
You do realize that gender and sex are commonly used interchangeably in modern English, right?
But let's do definitions. Those that make distinctions use gender to mean "social conventions associated with the male or female sex" and sex to mean "either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and many other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions".
Sex is the state of being biologically male or female. Gems have no sex. Just like how bacteria have no sex.
This got me wondering. What do you think is the shortest amount of time after a work's creation before it's acceptable to use a character from that work in your own thing. Take something like Frankenstein or Dracula that tons of different works use just because they like the character? Is it the public domain or can it be sooner? Excluding possible legal trouble that can be waved away as parody.
This is what happens when parents aren't allowed to beat their children till they either die or straighten up.
Way too easy to brush things off as "kids will be kids!" but those kids will be adults one day, and they'll carry their retarded ideas in to adulthood if they aren't corrected. No matter how hard the last generation tries, the new one will take over. Even if they have to wait till the old shits up and die.
>Reduce all characters and stories in to single sentence descriptions
>Shocked when everything looks the same
>Asherah, was a goddess of wisdom who's holy symbol was a snake coiled around a tree.
Ahaha! I now change my head-canon of reality to Western medicine being an Ashera cult.
That makes things so much more logical when you look at religious nutjobs refusing treatment.
Steven also is openly fusing with a chick into Schrödinger's pants
we have to assume there is and isn't a pussy in there.
Which suggests that when Steven and Connie hit puberty now, Stevonnie will change physically. Which could go strange places.
Will it be male and female traits, or a completely androgynous being with mighty Quartz hair?
Here you go, this explains it rather well.
I honestly want to see what happens when these two meet.
Heh, and here I thought I like Steven Universe because the worldbuilding is above average, the character interactions are engaging and funny, and the actual OST being great.
Wow... it was bad this whole time!
Sugar has done gay porn/shipping of a bunch of characters but most of that stuff is off the internet now.
I think I still have some shit from my old computer from her livejournal that I'll upload one day
besides the ocean, the moon, the spaceship, the jungle, and the extraspatial rooms inside the temple? yh just the beach and a few floating temples.
But "worldbuilding" doesn't refer to literally nothing other than creating fictional geography - even on /tg/ - and you know that
If you see "gay" stuff from fans 95% of the time it will be projection. The word "gay" has never been used once in the series, and there is no "gay propaganda being exposed to children."
There are two perceivably female minor characters who have affection for each other and fuse to create one of the main characters. People like to believe that the act of fusing is meant to be a parallel to sex even though the argument is very loose, cherrypicked, and implies that it's perfectly okay for little kids to fuck each other silly. Take that as you will.
- Gem physiology: That they aren't organic and don't have literal 'skin' or even organs, for that matter. Completely hollow on the inside and they cannot be killed unless their gem is destroyed.
- What certain gem types typically look or behave like, where they are made, and how they are made.
- Even more gem culture: what early Earth gem colonies were like, some 'basic' economic details, caste systems, etc.
- Gem techonology more in-depth: computers, long-distance communication, (phones) more electronic weapons, etc. Whereas before it just seemed like they were 'magic' and had 'magic rooms' but there were no electronics involved.
- The reveal that monsters are corrupted gems, where previously it was unknown where they came from or how they got 'corrupted'.
Among other things...
It's not exactly parallel to sex, but obviously Rebecca is aware of the undertones and puts them there on purpose.
I like how people act like show creators themselves aren't massive shippers. The creators now were once the fans.
>The word "gay" has never been used once in the series
It doesn't have to. There was stealth gayness in the latest episode with the green one shipping 'Pierre and Percy" from some tv show.
>People like to believe that the act of fusing is meant to be a parallel to sex even though the argument is very loose
>two midgets laying together on the ground
>"so, um...did you say I was...different?"
>red one nods and then asks
>"And you hadn't before?"
>"of course not! when would I have ever~"
>"...I'm so sorry"
>"no,no, don't be!"
It's pretty fucking obvious what it's supposed to be
Closest example I could think of, Johns grew up to write his fanfiction into canon
>Gem physiology: That they aren't organic and don't have literal 'skin' or even organs, for that matter.
Which doesn't make sense since they can eat and expel liquid through crying and saliva, and Greg wouldn't have been able to dance with Rose as easily as he was able to since Gems are supposed to be heavy and hard.
>What certain gem types typically look or behave like, where they are made, and how they are made.
We know how quartz are made and nothing else.
>Even more gem culture: what early Earth gem colonies were like, some 'basic' economic details, caste systems, etc.
They didn't have a colony on Earth. And what do we know little about their classism
>The reveal that monsters are corrupted gems, where previously it was unknown where they came from or how they got 'corrupted'.
They squished that into a small part of an episode and had Amethyst say "oh yeah the monsters used to be like us kek"
Not sure what most of this has to do with world building. Barely any of this had development either, it was just told to us by a character through exposition
That's true of Zim too, to an extent. He's surprisingly competent in his own self-centered way. such as when he was sent to the boot camp planet, or when he was imprisoned by that mall cop... how many episodes did he show-up Dib in the end? The water balloon one comes to mind, but I'm sure there were others. The best example of Zim's strengths and flaws is the episode with the time piggies, because he was consistently effective in that episode... until he unwittingly went too far and was undone by his own hubris. A similar case could be made for Peridot, who probably would've won her fight with Pearl if she hadn't goaded her.
They're fucking magic. Their bodies aren't rock. They're magical energy projections. It's been repeatedly shown that they are whatever shape, size, and weight that they want to be. They even automatically adjust their weight to suit different gravity.
Maybe it's not that the show doesn't have world-building, maybe you just need to learn to pay attention.
And also, you should probably learn what the phrase world-building actually means, because you blatantly don't know what it actually means.
>they are whatever shape, size, and weight that they want to be
Not really brah. Gem projection size seems to be equal to gem power. It's why when Amy gets 2swole for 2long she get spaghetti arms and was the whole point of Steven's Birthday.
>They're fucking magic
They're engineered rock aliens.
>Their bodies aren't rock.
If not actual rock, then at least as hard and as heavy as rock according to several episodes.
>They even automatically adjust their weight to suit different gravity.
Of different planets, not whenever they want.
>Maybe it's not that the show doesn't have world-building, maybe you just need to learn to pay attention.
There are many female-coded characters that have strong emotional and physical connections with each other. There's nothing overtly sexual, but if you showed someone the scenes without any context, you'd see a bunch of girls in romantic-ish relationships with one-another.
>Which doesn't make sense since they can eat and expel liquid through crying and saliva, and Greg wouldn't have been able to dance with Rose as easily as he was able to since Gems are supposed to be heavy and hard.
Their bodies can only perform human-like functions like eating and sexual reproduction when they choose to shapeshift the necessary internal organs. [You can pick this apart like why do they cry/blush/etc. because these function also reflect the presence of internal organs, but you know.]
Otherwise, I believe their bodies *feel* organic and human even though they are not. They have skin and hair and body heat and all that.
Because childish things can still appeal to adults while still being childish, and still being primarily aimed at children.
Also, liking a thing a lot isn't the same as being obsessed with it. If you are an adult obsessed with a children's cartoon, you are mentally ill.
What would be exceptional world building? Non-/co/ also welcome, and bonus for intrige
SU's world reads as fan-fiction, but it's done a better job at having me play it frame by frame to catch something, or rewatch episodes when new lore surfaces to pick up on interactions I didn't notice before (and many different times with the same scene).
Other media I enjoy, off the top of my head:
- Invader Zim: I loved the world-building, the Irken empire, the Earth's ways, but nothing was a head scratcher. All you got from paying lots of attention were hidden references to other shows, or cameos
- Samurai Jack: Loved the premise, but everything was on the surface
- ATLA: idem. In fact, lack of subtlety in many cases. idem for Korra
- Fargo (the tv series): well thought out, and the first season really built up to the second one, but it was very in your face. These weren't *subtle* hints to an earlier event
- The Idiot (Dostoevsky): great story, great characters, great tangles, great shenanigans, very well thought out... wait this actually had quite a bit of nice forshadowing, but the setting itself was just Russia. And most great reveals were thing you just didn't know until you knew them. When myshkin says he's a prince it's a surprise to the other characters, not the reader. The plot had forshadowing and symbolisms, not the world-building.
- Stuff by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Timeline): Very nice ideas, but he straight up told you everything. There wasn't much left for you to connect the dots
why did i write so much. My point is, as weak as it might be, the way SU drops subtle hints of lore really does it for me.
>Military Alien race who are artificially created in mass numbers with the purpose of concurring planets and serving their empire
>Social hierarchy where height plays a massive role
>Leaders are ridiculously taller than subordinates
>No empathy for other lifeforms
>Small, green, low status in hierarchy
>Supposed to concur earth to please leaders
>Worships their leaders who don't give a shit about them.
>Reliant on technology to defeat enemies
>Shouts a lot , dramatic and childish, thinks they're the smartest and better than everyone else
>Very ignorant/naive about earth and its properties
>Uses weird alien descriptions of body parts for comedic effect
>Same speech manners and ways of addressing people - The Dib human, the Steven etc.
There are a lot more similarities. Peridot is obviously inspired by Invader Zim, which Sugar was a big fangirl of and produced both art and fanfic for in the early 2000's. Pic related is her IZ self-insert with Dib from her now defunct dA.
I don't consider it necessarily bad or a complaint though, just interesting.
>Otherwise, I believe their bodies *feel* organic and human even though they are not.
Why did Ronaldo shatter his hand when he tried to punch Pearl then?
>They have repeatedly, explicitly been referred to as magic
No they haven't?
>It's a children's cartoon, not hard science fiction
When you specify how a species works and then you break those rules, that's called bad writing, my memeing friend.
>Because childish things can still appeal to adults while still being childish, and still being primarily aimed at children.
But it's written by adults and has themes a child wouldn't understand.
Funny how insecure you are that criticism of this cartoon is akin to mental illness to you.
As an autist, Peridot reminds me a lot of myself. I think that's where Rebecca is drawing her inspiration from.
If she was still that into Zim, wouldn't she have contributed to the comic book at this point? I know she's contributing to MST3K.
Peridot is a higher rank than a pearl though, who's taller than her. And sapphire is a rare aristocrat despite her height.
The gems use shapeshifting, like how rose shapeshifted a womb in order to conceive steven. Also Gems definitely arent as heavy as rocks. rose was able to float slightly while in the air when she met Greg. They are made of hard light.
We have this discussion all of the time. Fusion is not sex, but there are obvious parallels.
>Lewd dance moves leading up to some fusions
>Garnet literally spreading her legs so Amethyst can jump into her
>Gems acting very flustered/excited when presented with the option to fuse
>Fusion being partly treated as a deeply intimate experience and a way for two gems to express their love and 'become one'.
>Pearl fusing with Rose with a very intimate dance in front of Greg to make him jealous
>Pearl covering Steven's eyes while Amethyst and Garnet fuse as she's blushing herself
>The way Garnet was trying to help Peridot - "it's okay if you aren't ready".
>Ruby and Sapphire lying in the grass talking after their fusion and how Sapphire had never 'done it before'.
These are parallels that are made to go completely over a young audience's head, but become very obvious as an adult.
Fusion is sometimes a tool to become stronger, but is also used way to express intimacy and love in many cases. That love can also be be friendly love or childish romance, such as in Steven and Connie's case. It is a lot of things, and the show treats it a such.
>It's probably like how there are female kryptonians despite the race not needing to breed for hundreds of year.
It's funny you write it like that because I'd piciture the opposite: there are no more males after breeding is rendered obsolete.
The fact that Sugar hasn't made this canon is a hopespot that she thinks ZADR is shit.
I hope so, at least, because it is a really shitty romantic pairing. If you wanted to get Homoshit up in here, at most it's be a Black pairing, with no actual sex.
"It's always sexual" implies that little kids fucking is treated as 'quirky but normal' (which is pretty fucked up), and saying that it isn't explicitly sexual but sometimes a form of mutual trust and intimacy between gems is what I was already saying.
I've never seen anyone refer to fusion as explicitly sexual unless it's for a joke or something. Clearly it is a lot more complicated than human sex, and the purpose of it varies depending on which gems are fusing and why.
Well on the one hand I'd say Peridot was a legitimate threat to the planet earth who was stopped by the Crystal gems who crashed her ship and dropped her threat level, compared to Zim, whose own incompetence made him a threat only to himself, and occasionally Dib. inb4 listed number of times Zim actually proved competent/dangerous. Lets not get into that. Regardless of exceptions, the point of Invader Zim was that he was an alien who was shit at invading planets and sent to Earth just to get him out of his superior's hair. Peridot herself is not a strong adversary, especially robbed of her weapons and superior technology, but she does represent a an invading alien force that legitimately has ill intentions for the Planet Earth, as opposed to the Irken Empire who really don't give a damn about this backwoods mud ball.
So no, I really don't think Peridot was designed as a Zim Ersatz simply for the purpose of recreating fanfiction into her own show.
On the other crazy fan theory hand... one must admit it IS suspicious that both the Irken race and the Gem race have a strange hierarchy that is based, at least partially, on how tall an individual is. I mean it was just speculation before but... I mean look at the damn Diamonds. They're big as fuck!
>We know how quartz are made and nothing else.
No we don't and that's wrong.
>They didn't have a colony on Earth. And what do we know little about their classism
Bruh if you don't watch the show don't pretend like you know
Doubt it. Now that Peridot is basically a child it would give some unfortunate implications if they fell in love. Peedee X Peridot is more likely at this point.
Also, I don't think there will be another human-gem romance, it would undercut the uniqueness of Rose and Greg's relationship.
>No we don't and that's wrong
Now explain the creation of Pearls, Peridots, Rubies, etc
They didn't have colony. They only completed 5% of what they planned to do before Rose and friends kept them from finishing
And we know nearly nothing about their caste system.
It's also noteworthy that the main character is literally the author's shameless self insert.
I'm not the only one who thought that Peridot's arc has been really bad, right? It just seems that way because /sug/ is full of spergs, right?
>rebecca draws her self insert character chained up, half naked and being held captive by zim
>she's dibs girlfriend and they're sexually active
>this isn't even the most perverted thing she's drawn
what is that naughty girl masturbating to in private I wonder...
I'd like to see another human-gem romance, but one that actually ends up in a breakup or ends in failure somehow. I think that would emphasize how special Greg and Rose's relationship was. I could really appreciate how Jamie's crush on Garnet was shutdown. And I think that human/gem relationships just seem really cute. I also generally like it when shows have relationships that don't work out 100% and end in marriage just because characters like eachother.
I think the arc's been great but I recognize that's only because I'm extremely biased because I like seeing Peridot so much. I'm a little disappointed that eventually the show will have to move on and stop revolving around her.
I respect your opinion anon
>I'm a little disappointed that eventually the show will have to move on and stop revolving around her.
Not to be mean anon, but your opinion is what really bugs me about the reception of this arc. I'm fine with people being obsessed with a certain character, but when the creators of the show get too obsessed themselves it becomes a problem. SU is about Steven, but lately it's seemed like the Peridot Show.
Maybe if I have the time, I'll write a long autistic post about it to better articulate my thoughts.
Honest question: do you think Peridot will be part of the Crystal Gems? Do you want her to be?
And by part, I mean like a new main character of equal narrative standing to Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl
I think she will be allied but I think the majority of the main narrative will still focus on Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, with occasional appearances from Peridot. The show is still largely about Steven and his Mom, and since Peridot didn't really know her, Peridot will have less importance in future episodes. Right now the show is going to be focused on her integration, though.
I don't know. Maybe? I don't really have expectations for her. She's not gonna dethrone anybody else. The show's about Steven, Pearl, Amethyst and Garnet. At most she'll be supporting cast like Connie and Greg.
>But don't you think that would upset the character dynamics that have already been established in the show?
This is the main reason I don't think she'll be a permanent cast member. Either she'll have infrequent appearances or she'll be killed.
Either way she's not getting upgraded to theme song status. They're not going to tack on "Oh, and Peridot too" there. Assuming she's around long enough for a revised opening, we might see her hanging out with Greg and Connie.
>But don't you think that would upset the character dynamics that have already been established in the show?
SU has already demonstrated numerous times how it doesn't give a fuck about maintaining the status quo.
No offense taken. I might be enjoying this immensely, but I can still recognize that this is not and never was what the show is supposed to be. And like I said, I know it's going to have to move on eventually. I do have to say that I was not nearly as interested in the show before Peridot showed up, and if she doesn't stay a permanent main cast member and eventually is taken out of the show I'm not sure how that will effect my opinion on it.
Pfft, it's lower than mere art, it's *verse*
the only way it could be lower is if it was comic books or cartoons.
>since Peridot didn't really know her, Peridot will have less importance in future episodes
I actually think Peridot brings an important new asset to the Crystal Gem team specifically because she didn't know Rose. She's the only one with an outsider's perspective who can step back and look at a situation objectively without feeling obliged to suck Rose's cock, and I think that is a very useful trait for the other crystal gems to have in a team member.
Even though I'm on the opposite side anon, I get how you feel. I really liked Season 1, and Season 2 just hasn't been measuring up to for me. But during the season 1 finale, a huge influx of new viewers came in who had a very different idea of what made the show good, which makes me feel frustrated and isolated.
Basically, when a show changes direction, fans who liked what it was originally become displaced by fans who like it the way it is now. This has happened with other shows before and I'm sure it will again. Who know? Maybe another change will happen and both of us will become disillusioned with SU, while a whole new group of fans comes in
The allusion is clearly intentional, but the reason Ruby apologizes probably not out of some notion of virginity but due to the transgression of fusion across the social boundaries, i.e. with a gem of another type, which she initiated and broke the prophecy.
Great kabedon, Garnet. Very impressive.
she succeeded in getting the communication diamond back and doing what she wanted to do
she's like half responsible for building the huge ass drill that's going to save their asses
she's competent when she needs to be, she's just a goof
After all this build up it would be bullshit if she wasn't. Also its pretty mcuh a given at some point 9especially now that YD is pissed) that the gems will eventually have a war with home world. It can't just be the 4 of them forever. I'm anticipating what her crystal gem design.
It's interesting you say this because the show has been very good at subtly showing how each characte goes through their character arcs simultaneously.
We've gotten a lot this season on how steven is being forced to come to grips between his human self and gem self.
desu I've loved the peridot arc, but it's made me realize how important the humans in beach city were in breaking up the character arc centric episodes. I use to really get anxious whenever a episode didn't foward the plot directly and was more about fleshing out the humans, but I'm starting to appreciate what they did sinc this arc. Again I loved this arc, but I think coupled with the hiatuses has made it feel draggy at times or like we've been at the barn too long. Hopefully next steven bomb we finally tackle the cluster.
You can very effectively mine German for metaphysical concepts and Japanese for oddly specific tropes.
the fear of being too close to a deadline to reach the intended goals.
horizontally striped blue and white panties with a specific stripe breath of roughly 8mm
Yeah. She basically pushes for a quartz stack.
How is it bad? She stuck her guns, everything she's done was believable for her character. Are you one of the people who thought she was irredeemably ebul because she stepped on a robot?
No, I just thought it was annoying how Peridot was
a. A walking exposition machine
b. Deus-ex-machinaed into being kept around despite being very annoying to both the gems and the viewer (while the writers were under the impression that this was "cute")
c. Having her redemption being built up and then suddenly happen much too quickly and neatly
Yeah. Save it for rip offs that are blatant ala Chinese Bootleg.
Actually, scratch that. You're better off channeling towards laughing at that crap. There's no point getting angry about this shit anyway because it's insignificant.
It designates all facial hair. English is in the minority group that treats facial hair as two separate categories for basically no reason.
I think most other languages define a word for facial hair and then just build subcategories.
In German, for instance, the moustache would be generally referred to as an upper-lip-beard.
She is fucking adorable. And this was entirely Steven's doing. He pushed for keeping her around and the rest just barely tolerated her initially.
Things grew from there and then she told YD to fuck off which was about as much of a declaration of allegiance as they could have hoped for.
So you're saying she had little to no moments that showed what her character were and she was mainly there to explain things...despite most of the arc being about her having to learn things
Deus-ex-machina doesn't mean what you think it means. Also this contradicts your last statement of her being an exposition bot. You basically admit you just didn't like her character (which is fine) and chose to ignore them.
This is literally an oxymoron. You can't build up something to suddenly happen. If it was built up then it happened when it happened.
It is pretty much over.
She is not fully integrated, but the redemption part was when she proved that she had absorbed their appreciation for earth.
What is not over is Peridot's character arc. And it likely won't just end, either. She will develop and change for the duration of the show.
I should have known better than to try and reason on /co/. Fuck me, why are SUfans so anal when it comes to anything with a hint of "filler" and then will play apologist for anything their favorite character or muh lore? It's hopeless to try and change anyone's mind.
I should probably just take a break from /co/ for a while. Respond, rage, post (You)s, whatever the hell you want. I need to cool off.
>that fucking pic of them in LoZ cosplay
>Nick sword piercing Dib
She had a sense of humor even then.
Also fuck if I were her I would probably drink bleach after people found these. I couldn't handle that shit. I'm fucking glad I never put anything embarrassing on the internet as a kid.
>I need to cool off
Did you really get that worked up over people not agreeing with you, anon?
Sugar grew up like the rest of us, with the same stimuli, only she went and did something with her life.
Think of all the basement-dwelling nerds drawing gay porn that DIDN'T become cartoonists!
Oh wait that's the entire animation industry.
It's both facial hair. One is just a specific position.
Other people just say you have a beard on your lip instead of acting like it's somehow unconnected to the hair growing around it.
She'll get less focus than the main 4 but still pretty close. Same goes for lapis and jasper. The homeworld gems will be secondary main characters, somewhere along the lines but a bit more than connie and greg. Steven is recruiting friends in the same way Rose did
Well I hope somebody on the show has their gem smashed at some point. It's a bit annoying when a show is about a war but there's no opportunity to feel any real sense of loss because the characters never actually get hurt.
Looking forward to a future episode where garnet, pearl, and amethyst have to go on a long mission and so jasper, peridot, and lapis have to take their place at the house with steven. but none of them really know how to be like the crystal gems and so steven has to teach them and also teach them how to look after him and use the microwave
Because then the characters would never stop being sad about it and the whole tone of the show would change. It would be too big of a deal. I mean, if you want that cool, but it sounds very very unlikely. Especially when they worked so hard to fit her in to things
But, those poor, unfortunate souls!
So sad! So sad!
Yeah death in the cast is tough.
And killing a little girl like Connie would completely sour the mood.
You could have Greg sacrifice himself in a pinch, but why would you?
I have a question
so I just started watching the show seeing the last few episodes and im wondering
Has anyone ever asked Greg why he had sex with a space rock
He wanted to fuck it. He didn't even know she was a space rock.
Which is why Gems being gender less feels like a copout. They are clearly designed to be seen by humanity and the audience as female.
He has a giant woman fetish. It's pretty much cannon because Marty says "oh here we go, how big was she?" Greg is an amazon chaser, who else would he want to fug but the tall, thick bbw Rose? Who cares if she's an alien
Greg's former manager told Greg that he should give up on trying to fuck one giant woman and instead focus on fucking many smaller ones, but I guess that's not the same thing.
>Has anyone ever asked Greg why he had sex with a space rock
Well, anon, wouldn't you?
Why wouldn't you fuck an agendered being that looks like the woman of your dream?
>saviour of Earth, so you are fixed with top notch salvation
>hot body (if that's what floats your boat... oh, wait, she's a shapeshifter! so make a request!)
>requires no feeding nor taking care of
>you have fun together
>makes the thin one salty
>likes your music
>likes to fug
>will be with you forever
>no risk of pregnancy
what could go wrong?
>the show isn't Greg Universe, the tale of an aging has-been never-was widower that's desperately trying to stay connected to his son and his roots in a dead town with no real future.
There's Oscar Bait there I tells ya.
Steven is either Gohan or Goku depending on how you want to look at it.
Smurfs and Namekians weren't fucking groping each other and dancing erotically while staring longingly into their partners eyes and asking was "Your first time fusing good for you, too?".
Basically, they weren't intimate so it didn't fucking matter.
when I found about homosexuality I felt it was a innately wrong and disturbing thing even though I didn't even really understand my own sexuality at the time
maybe I was on to something
I'm not even talking about fusing though.
I'm just talking about people that seem to be angered by the idea of a race that is sexless while looking like a single human gender like those examples it's not exactly a new concept in fiction but it wasn't until SU that I have seen people bitching about it.
Transformers fucked up because it said they were sexless and then created a distinction between supposedly non-existent robot sexes.
nobody has any problem understanding that Gem are agendered. We all see the shows and clearly understand that there is no place for sex nor gender in gem standards
But then we have Pearl thristing over Rose, and you cannot help buy wonder if they look suspiciously femenine, and if it's a coincidence that the creator masturbates to Rose-themed yuribait like Utena. Take your time.
I found out about homosexuality because I had relatives that were gay and I never really cared or had a problem with it.
Ironically it's all the push in the last few years to make it socially acceptable by putting it into the limelight and filtering everything in creation through a gay lens that is making me really start to lose my patience and want to tell gay people to fuck off.
Oh I have no doubt that sugar is a fujoshit and that was probably her aim but I also feel that within the context of the show nothing about Pearl lusting over Rose necessarily conflicts with the idea that gems are sexless since obviously gems don't fuck as humans would, fusion may be the gem equivalent of sex but it serves a different purpose than what sex does for humans but both share a similar psychological draw probably to encourage gems to get stronger in fights much like the euphoria of a orgasm is to encourage reproduction in humans, makes sense.
So yeah Sugar is definitely doing it for yuribait but I guess it just isn't as distracting to me as it is to others, I'm sure lots of things happen in fiction purely because of the creators fetish but are still not jarring enough to derail the work.
>Ironically it's all the push in the last few years to make it socially acceptable by putting it into the limelight and filtering everything in creation through a gay lens that is making me really start to lose my patience and want to tell gay people to fuck off.
>why do these people want to be treated as humans
>fucking gay people REEEEEEE
Where do i go to meet her and pound and intensly fuck suger in her fan girl pussy? Also, i look like an older versioon of the anime character she wants to fuck, so would that help me get sugars tittites?
The Crystal Gems are like the only ones who give in to lust and shit it looks like. Homeworld doesn't seem to give a shit about emotional attachments and stuff. Fusion exists for combat to Homeworld.
The Crystal Gems are rebels and they deny everything Homeworld teaches so they run with romance and shit. Pearl is in love with Rose, Ruby and Sapphire are in love and use fusion as a way to express that, Rose loved Greg and voluntarily decided to do what humans do when they love each other.
She didn't need to, but she did.
I'm still not sure she told Greg that having a kid was going to cause her to stop existing until late into the pregnancy. In the video she made for Steven, Greg seems pretty happy for a guy whose significant other is going to effectively die soon.
what fucking idiots.
>spend months complaining about leaks, with people taking pics, video, and straight up cracking the videos on the servers
>your network shows some "oops spoilers xDD" mildly funny moment as a disposable credits scene
>crystal gems attack on homeworld
>lots of destruction, cool monsters coming out of cages and eating people, fucking awsome
>ruby and sapphire get seperated from their garnet fusion
>suddenly, ruby turns around
>its one of her old teammates on her squad of rubys
>sick spins start to occur
"Pretend you're Rose"
Beach city people ignore it, the gems have always been there so they don't question them being space rocks or having magic-esque powers. But yeah Greg was nailing a giant warrior space goddess who shapeshifted a womb and reverted back into a space rock to give birth to his son, and no one ever mentions how fucked up that is ...
>To Homeworld population, Crystal gems are a bunch of perverted abnormalities who have constant orgies.
>Leader of crystal gems practices inter-species sex and even reproduces freak offspring with a life-form considered much less advanced than her own.
>TFW ill never get a chance to impreganante a hot alien with my seed
Why even live?
Still doesn't seem like it works.
Peridot could have just said threw Lapis under the bus, claimed she was stranded from Jasper engaging Lapis after she had a psychotic break, and took the ride home.
The way that episode ended, the CG's are still fucked, because a ship is still going to be sent, but now to capture Peridot so she can be broken.
I think when Steven hung out with the cool kids they sort of started to get the gist that Steven's life was fucked up with him mentioning how he is his own mom, but they didn't seem to quite grasp the whole story.
The beach city residents know Steven is here now and his mom is not, but without being told exactly what happened I'd bet they just think Rose died in childbirth the way some human women sometimes do. I know that's what I thought when I first started watching the show.
She seemed pretty aware those could be remotely detonated, and even if she wasn't, there's no telling she didn't just get poofed.
They might just abandon her to die with Earth, though.
Remember when this thread used to be about fanfiction?
>They might just abandon her to die with Earth, though.
Since she expressly said she intends to destroy the cluster, they can't take the chance she might actually succeed and cost them their new weapon toy.
Then yeah, she fucked up by not just accepting her tongue lashing and going home.
Now a ship is going to come, and since they're down at least 1 Jasper and 1 Lapis Lazuli (That informed Homeworld CGs remained uncorrupted on Earth) they'll probably send the "Kick Your Shit In Squad"
Either way, if the gems succeed in destroying the cluster homeworld is probably going to notice. If they're not already on their way after Peridot's message, they'll be coming once the cluster is fucked.
I'd watch it. Has to be on HBO or netflix, and it has to exist in a world without SU
It'd be hard to find them. They are at the bottom of the ocean.
Or you know, just have Jasper or Lapis find em and give them to her.
They flat out said that she's a Crystal Gem in the past two episodes. Steven says she's one now that she chose to protect Earth over obeying Yellow Diamond, and Peridot herself says she's one in the following episode before having a breakdown. Then she complains about if she's going to need a star on her clothes now.
They could just as easily write her off at the end of the season, either through her dying or going back to Homeworld. However, they've given her character so much focus that I sincerely doubt they would write her off. She just had an entire episode told almost entirely from her perspective, which is something that only Garnet has done so far.
I'd rather we get Jasper and Lapis joining the team as well so that we can have a new intro. Yes, Jasper makes less sense than Lapis, but adding two members instead of three feels weird.
My guess is that they do a new intro for Season 3 (we're in the middle of Season 2) with all the new members.
Poor camera work but I wanted to know if the idea of peridot and garnets combined weapon just being a floating ring of fists behind them
>A minority wants to be represented in media, hopefully helping other people of said minority feel better about themselves
>annoyed about this
Ironically it's all the shitposting by anons like you that is making me really start to lose my patience and want to tell you to fuck off.
>>rebecca draws her self insert character chained up, half naked and being held captive by zim
This only makes my dick stronger. Ya know, these wouldnt have been so bad, if it werent for the god awful anime eyes.
They don't have to kill her or send her to Homeworld to write her out of the show. They could more easily just have her decide move to the barn permanently instead of coming back to the temple and then have her only come back every now and then.
Fuck, the last i heard that was when i won that job promotion and had the ber sex with my wife ever. Then i found out i was in a computor program in an alien spaceship....
I DON'T want to write Peridot off the show, I think she's fantastic and funny. I'm a sucker villain-goes-good stories. She also works as the team's tech person in the long term.
I'm just a pessimist that looks at ways that this could possibly be ruined. Having her permanently join the team is a big status quo shift, and it's rare to see a Western show do that (though it's become more prevalent).
But we need a status quo shift, before she came in SU was gegtting stale and boring. What they need are more gems, and different organic or mechanical aliens to fight/ befriend as allies with.
Right on, pearls are for making fun of and fucking.
But i thought tumblr loved rebecca sugar. Arent most of tumblr closted pedos anyways, and just act like stuck up sex hating bitchs to live out fantasys of being doms to their sexist male oppresers?
But isnt that like a small minority? Most of tumblr is shipping retards, and even dont hate men and love sex, and that small community makes me question why i waste my time on this shitposting site for chinese cartoons.
>Steven is somehwere between Gohan and Goku
>Amethyst is Krillen
>Pearl is Bulma
>Garnet is somewhere between Piccolo and Tien
>Now Peridot is basically Mr. Satan (though she'll be more Videl when she learns to fight)
>Yellow Diamond is clearly Frieza
As for the other two, I'm kinda hoping it goes
>Lapis is full on Piccolo, sticking around and caring for/protecting Steven/Gohan but mostly being by herself and meditating freely
>Jasper is Vegeta, being full on antagonist for the most part, siding with the good guys only when in the face of a bigger threat (while still being violent and hateful towards the good guys), and slowly being won over by bits of the good side and their rivalry with one of the members in specific.
Tumblr is a large internet community made up of different individual people who have differing opions on things. Just like any other community.
Now most of those people are of the female, neoprogressive sort, but there will still be disagreements in that.
Mordecai is wish fulfillment maximum. Literally JC Quntiel but instead of getting none of the bitches, he gets all of them despite being kind of a weirdo.
Also usually fixes his best friends mistakes, rigby the screw up that mordecai always has to take care of.
Neoprog shit heads can't agree on squat.
Their demands are so retarded and contradictory, they are bound to disagree with each other and everyone who has a sensible position on anything.
Feminists get fucking excommunicated over indicating that there could be boys with problems and that battered husbands are a thing.
