The reason Pixar/Disney when so often is huge ignorance on animation for much of the voting audience. It's likely the only animated movie they see, and most people's skills and knowledge base have absolutely nothing to do with animation.

However Kaufman is likely a film they will go see, and it's more mature themes might take them by surprise.
