Bleach was pretty great in the beginning. A cool Urban fantasy about samurai fighting evil spirits, Ishida was cool, Chad wasn't useless, the school kids were part of the character drama. Even the anime was good, had a great soundtrack
Yeah, I dunno, I think I'm just bound to never be fully satisfied. I believe Kubo went on the record of saying something like "Well if you can do it better, show me" in regards to criticisms about Bleach's plot direction.
It started off pretty neat, though. I don't know where I expected it to go, but I'm tired of main protags having a secret forbidden mixed bloodline of ancient power.
Ichigo was a weird kid with an odd ability that got sucked into something larger-than-life (or larger-than-death) and through his sheer bullheadedness found himself becoming better at adapting to the bizarre circumstances than anyone expected.
Okay, this works.
Now he's essentially just another Naruto with super special blood or some shit.
Any cartoons reference Jojo?
japan has a blood line culture though. not as prominent as it was before ww2 but its still there for pretty much anything important. (western culture still has it too but to a lesser extreme).
no one can achieve true greatness on their own merits, it has to be because they were the illegitimate bastard child of some great powerful guy rather than through their own merits.
After the Espada and Aizen is imprisoned. Just pretend the story is over. Eveythign else is filler tier that Kubo obviously just made up to extend the series.
After the Soul Society the plot should've stayed in the human world for most of the time having the Arrancar come to them, THEN go to Hueco Mundo. Hueco Mundo was too long and all those enemies were wasted because they werent planned to stick around like the Soul Reapers
That is sadly the case with Jump style Manga. They either get canceled and have shitty rushed endings over half a dozen chapters or live long enough to become unrecognizable trash. You can't really blame them because they spend all this time making a really great story good enough to get them published but eventually what they planned comes to an end and they have to keep coming up with endless content until it becomes so unpopular it gets canceled, all while still doing 16+ pages a week.
I didn't even know stories could end until I started reading books 8 years ago. I grew up on endless manga with shitty endings and comics that were just tiny arcs over and over again.
This is why i'm surprised One Piece has lasted. Even at its lowest points I dont think any part of One Piece could be considered bad, except maybe Fishman Island. Everyone but Hody and Vander Decken were completely forgettable with shit designs
Admittedly, some manga do the long game well. JoJo manages to keep things fresh, though that's probably because they change characters for every part, so far I'm loving the hell out of Berserk, which stays good by never updating.
I think the big problem with Shonen Manga is that the longer it goes on the more powerful the characters become, to the point where anybody that doesn't start revealing secret demon heritage becomes irrelevant.
You see a similar thing happen with some Western long running comics like TWD and Invincible, though they suffer more from a problem where a lack of status quo becomes a status quo.
Jojo doesnt count. Each part is a completely different story. Berserk is still good but I miss the grounded dark feudal fantasy feel that slowly went away after the Lost Children arc
Panty and Stocking has loads and loads. For example, there's one episode where they turn into Transformers and the animation looks like the G1 cartoon. It even had the Autobot/Decepticon logo spin that the show did between scenes.
Nah, Tower of Conviction was after Lost Children, and that arc was GOAT. But yeah as Berserk is right now Guts seems woefully out of place with all the children, mermaids, elves and shit running about.
It wasn't sales of the anime. It performed on par or better than the others for most of its run, it's just that the studio was tiered of creating filler.
Chances are revival when Kuno announced ending year
that was the last time I ever watched anything ben 10 related
The best part about this reference, is that a fair amount of people had no idea what JoJo was back when this aired, in America.
Billy and Mandy knew how to do references right.
Does this look like a modern move design to you?
The show as a whole over the 5 years has done a huge amount of homages and references, some more subtle than others
S5 had background references to planes, trains and automobiles, 'lucy's' psychiatry booth with a bunch of peanuts looking characters walking past and a not so subtle namedrop of 'winter is coming'
Also a character parodying lady gaga with digital music and autotune and everything if that counts as a homage
It's not so much 'closet' as it is 'no need to talk about it unless it comes up and is relevant'
MLP threads stayed in a bubble here until /b/ ruined everything.
This is why Rurouni Kenshin is the best Shonen Jump manga. Power levels are kept to suspension of disbelief-level normal, good fight scenes that actually have lasting impacts on the health and emotions of the characters, and the series lasts only 28 volumes. Enough for all the main characters to get fully developed and for all the loose ends in the story to be tied up, but not padded past its usefulness. It was written with a clear end in mind, so it's able to keep a good pace all the way through.
Each batman show has one, but this one was my favorite.
yup that's why i decide to stop watching long-running series. if it has more than 80 or so episodes I don't even bother anymore. status quo never changes, characters become flanderized, female characters are purely for fanservice, even if it's completely out of character.
I think the only other SJ maga that has not completely fallen apart over its length has been One Piece. Mostly because it set up a world Oda could fill in later.
Naruto and Bleach have fucked up because they started with limited premises they then threw out because the author could not expand beyond what he had set up, which was not much.
Compare the clumsy escalation of power level in Naruto and compare that to how One Piece completely circumnavigates that issue by making characters almost impossible to compare for the most part.
Not to mention the rise of the Strawhat Pirates from provincial nobodies to minor players on the world stage over years with an ever-expanding network of interlinked pirate crews and their fates, marine command, the revolutionary army, world government and many more.
The wrongest Anon that ever lived.
I'm still waiting for Pearl to do this.
If a fighting Pearl in love with Rose is not perfect for a Rose of Versaille reference, then I don't know what is.
>People mention Steven Universe referencing Utena
>Don't really belive it
>Look up a scene
>It's like they lifted the fucking frames straight from Utena
I dunno, I just can't get past the whole guys-who-say-murder-and-pillaging-is-wrong-but-call-themselves-pirates thing. Like how in Naruto they call themselves ninjas but wear incredibly conspicuous outfits and act like subterfuge and assassination are deplorable.
One Piece does have a compelling, in-character reason why Ruffy considers himself a pirate and not a roaming hero.
Because heroes are selfless people who will share their meat with others. And he won't share that meat with nobody.
Naruto started with super-powered ninjas. And then just devolved into beam-spamming sayans.
Yeah it's a shame that it's non-existant in US but that's because he shot himself in the foot by naming 90% of the characters after western bands and songs.
Also because it's whacky as shit. I love JoJo.
It;s just depressing how even if the series is brought more to the states, it has to be heavily altered just to make a bunch of musician's lawyer's happy, like the name of their fucking band or song is going to steal money away from them. It's so frustrating that America will never have Jojo in it's complete form, if at all.
>Transformers is a anime though
Nope, although a lot of episodes were done by Japanese studios, and there were later, Japanese exclusive seasons. The original cartoon was an american production, albeit one based on Japanese toys(with character designs largely done by a Filipino).
>tfw Medaka Box never got bad
Sure, it wasn't great for the first 50 chapters, but it was never bad either.
The official VIZ manga translate the musicians names fine but Crunchyroll butchers everyone. They renamed J Geil as Centerfold and all this other nonsense.
TAKE MY LOVE, MY PAIN AND ALL OF MY ANGER!
I don't think Araki cares; one of the most frequently needed to be changed references are those to Prince, since he's very sue-happy. Yet Araki continues to name things after his music, including the Stand of the protagonist of part 8.
That's what the internet is for anon; the US may not have it in paper but at least it's available online. ASB had that workaround though, in that the subtitles had silly names but they kept the dialog unchanged. Sure the subs say "Zipperman" but Bruno says "Sticky Fingers" regardless.
Araki does care though, at least he used to, since there was that whole situation with one of the games trying to be brought over to the west, but Araki refused to change any of the names, or something.
I can understand if they are forced to change Stand names, I mean I think it's fucking stupid to begin with that copyright law is so assbackwards that even the names can never be used, but changing character names, like fucking Polnareff, I mean yeah it's a reference to the musician, but his whole name isn't the musican's name. You can't fucking copyright a last name.
As far as I know...
Once again proving that DIO is forever the best villain in JoJo.
DIO is just too fun.
I know I'm in the minority but I really liked the Pillarmen the most
>mfw Rikiya Koyama won't return to voice Kira in the anime
>we won't get his BITE ZA DUSTO animated
Theres no denying DIO is fun, but Kira is just a better villain. DIO will always be a great villain and character, but he is pretty white bread in terms of Jojo villains, and the only person probably lower than him is Diavalo, and only because a villain you have to take a jackhammer to to understand is kind of a shitty villain.
Honestly, I can't think of a single Jojo villain that isn't solid gold.
Diavolo's probably the weakest just because of translation, but even he's great.
My favourite is still America Man though.
i want josuke and rohan back
honnestly its better like that seeing how shows that got influenced by it gone forever (naruto, bleach, one piece) and went downhill, its cool to see that because of its lack of popularity jojo stayed great except for part 5.fuck part 5 at least there is beach boys, mista and bruno.it even dodged a bullet by going seinen.
to be honnest what happened to bleach was ''nothing''. it never changed beyond the rukia arc.it always remain the same thing
>ichigo friend get kidnapped by new groups that defeats him
>ichigo go the group location
>previously defeated opponent rejoin his party
>he train and defeat everyone like it was a beat-em-all
all of this with uncreative asspulls.
I worked on a couple of episodes as a cleanup artist on this show. This most likely wasn't intended and was a bored artist who given a vague direction to insert high school students here.
Oh. No no no.
It wasn't even the first time that exact shot happened in DBZ.
Piccolo sided his head when Gohan fired a beam at him during training.
I only happen to know this because I've watched the ocean dub so many times.
It was more probably a Mars attacks! reference
Yeah but he has a point. The bike slide has been in so many things it could easily be a reference to a reference without even thinking of the source material. It's just been that prevalent through the years.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MY NAME IS TIGER MILLIONAIRE
Paul used to wear clothing similar to Steven prior to the having the cellphone, but I couldn't find a good picture.
A lot of changes could be even more subtle without ruining it and still being completely safe. Could have changed it to Stealy Dan. A lot of the Stand names in ASB could have just been spelt different and it would have been fine.
Christ, just put some thought into it and you don't have to ruin everything forever.
As far as I know, outside the name controversies, the translations are fine for Jojo, and in the first two parts there aren't really any name changes, since theres not a lot of references.
>that fucking Speedwagon voice
I can't stop vomiting
The Batman "Artifacts"
they even name drop DKR
>Billy and Mandy knew how to do references right
They really did
>makes AOT clone
>has AOT joke in one of their own shows
I always felt this was more Jojo than DBZ, but it's hard to say
>mfw talking to a dumb cunt who kept on trying to argue that SU WASN'T influenced by anime
Fucking swear to god, some people insist on being stupid.
I'm a massive Platinumfag so I just saw a Platinum Games boss fight right there.
Christ, that would be the sickest shit.
Doesn't SU have a homage to that very same episode with that episode where Steven and Connie really want to go see that movie with the dog?
Teen titans go has like a thousand. Especially those ones where the art changes for parts of the episode.
Nigga, I want to Bromance of Josuke and Okuyasu back
I'm hype as fuck for Part 4
Too bad TTGo is shit and the "homages" were more for parodies that fell flat.
Dude, Character Action Game as Garnet would be some baller-ass vidya
It's alright. Scalebound probably won't be a straight up character action game anyway and we have Nier: Automata coming out this year.
It's going to be alright, Anon...it's going to be alright...
Nah that's pretty clearly Jotaro and Dio's first exchange of blows.
It could only be more obvious if one of the punches slipped through before the oras/mudas.
Who's to say it isnt a reference to both though.
I watched that episode I just didn't bring myself to remember the title, yeah it was cute but the majority of this show is just Johnny Test tier screaming and everyone being dicks to eachother.
Dan Vs. The Cat Burglar had a rip-off of Cowboy Bebop's Tank song during its chase scene.
Man I miss that show.
No one's questioning that. But they do alright parodies and homages Far above JT when an episode like that is on
I just wish they'd stop being butthurt over people hating the show. They have like 3 episodes to that. JT never got that pathetic
This is going to sound really weird, but I really appreciate that sort of fandom, you know? The sort of gamer who's really into character action games, is a big fan of TBFP, etc.? You know, the sort of person who's REALLY into vidya like that. That sort of person is fucking based, and has great taste, dude. You know what I mean?
My nigga. Glad we're on the same page.
>tfw loved TBFP but now I can barely make if through a video.
I enjoy the Podcast and love Plague though. Just, Matts changed so much, Liam's become barebones and doesn't talk as much about some random weebshit for me to look into, Pat and Woolie are somewhat consistent though.
I love TBFP still. They're not as good as they used to be but occasionally, they'll put out a video or a series I'll enjoy.
Recently, I liked Matt and Liam's Devil's Third playthrough.
Also this is going to sound autistic, but I hate it when they play fighting games and they go so deep into the lore. Like, to me it's just like...who cares?
Yeah thing is, as much as I like them, they have fucking shit taste in comics and capeshit. They generally don't like capeshit as much as their weebshit and they're Marveldrones on top of that.
He never was my favorite but he used to be alright. I miss the fun loving guy into Suda 51, Deadly Premonition, etc.
I thought the Until Dawn play through was alright even if I dislike the game a bit.
I love fighting games and most of their lore but they're not very good and sometimes aren't even correct.
I love Plague in general. I use the DS play through as back ground noise, putting me to sleep, and just actual entertainment
Eyeshield 21 ended in a good spot. 37 volumes, ending with a football game of Japan's best high school athlete's versus America's. It felt right.
That said, I'd like a short spinoff of the new college/work teams.
Oh no, the Zaibatsu fucking LOVE the plots and characters of various fighting games. You should watch some of their Friday Night Fisticuffs videos. They go so deep into the lore and shit. I wouldn't even care if >>78850935 like I said here, they didn't know shit about capeshit and generally seem to not care about it as much.
That's not my point. They get so passionate when they talk about the lore of KoF or Guilty Gear. It just annoys me somehow.
That fucking bike is probably the most iconic bike in pop fiction. I've seen so many references to it in so many shows over the years, including the infamous skidding bit. Even now it still pops up every now and then.
You facepalm and yet I do the same with "Fooly Cooly" because I watched it before it came to the states. Furi Kuri, yo. In general, it doesn't really matter, there's a meaning behind all of the different takes on the title.
I'm not pretending it's obscure, I just never expected it to show up in a cartoon. Cartoons weren't sneaking in homages hardly at all back when Billy and Mandy first aired.
And in terms of the general viewing audience for the show, it is pretty obscure.
The pacing of the final arc wasn't so hot. It felt like it deserved more build up and more payoff, because it didn't feel very hype at the end. Never mind that
they didn't win,I can stomach that. It didn't feel like the kind of moment the whole series was building towards.
I honestly didn't know there were people who cared *that* much about fighting game plots outside of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Tekken I guess.
Of any video game genre, the plot of fighting games has always been something that mattered the least to me. I have never given that much of a fucking shit about what was going on while playing a fighting game.
Guess I'm just different.
Some of the recent chapters feel like fluff. They aren't building that ending mystery well enough, and a lot of times I fail to care about the struggles of the people on the island they land on.
Doflamingo's arc go pretty intense there though. Minus Luffy's new level of powerswell.
Dune. The box holds a needle that forces you to feel extreme pain and your not supposed to remove your hand to show that you are stronger than your instincts, which is why Mindy loses points for pulling out her hand. The white robe is n't supposed to mean anything.
Here's the sense from the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG5yKNTvVg8
Trust me, I know all about Dune. It's my favorite sci-fi series. The movie didn't even come close to doing the book justice. I was just surprised they would put that reference in a kid's show. Even for an older audience it's obscure.
Speaking of Dune, remember this episode?
>The movie didn't even come close to doing the book justice.
This is true of every book-to-movie translation ever. Everyone who read the book of a movie is always disappointed.
Do you have any specific complaints about it though?
I could go on for years but sure.
>bald Bene Gesserit
>pus warts all over Baron Harkonnen
>milking the cat
>revealing Navigators too early in the movie thus ruining the mystique of the spacing guild
>Paul being able to raise his hands and make the planet rain at the end
Those are just the ones off the top of my head.
Drawn Together had a Fat Albert thing, plus 100 more references. The final episode had a crowd shot with dozens of old characters.
Panty and Stocking was actually inspired by Drawn Together. They couldn't actually put as many characters from other shows into theirs, though - that's what did the first episode of Osomatsu-san in, because Japan has less parody law.
Rurouni Kenshin is the only Shonen Manga I legit think is for the most part perfect, at least until Shishio dies. Jinchu has a few things I disagree with, but even Kenshin's flashback to the bakamatsu is amazing.
No, I mean it honestly reads like a retarded guy like Chris-Chan came up with it. It sounds like fucking Sonichu. I'm not doing it for "meme points" - it seriously sounds fucking autistic.
Giorno and Rohan apparently survived the Universe reboot, Giorno because he has the arrow and Rohan because he was too busy working to notice.
So they'll show up, probably to find a way to get Josuke to punch everything back to normal with Emporio.
The difference is a lot of that needless detail is lumped onto ongoing manga to keep it going forever and keep some deep revelations happening so readers will keep caring. I don't see the motivations as very similar.
Oh. I got the toku inspiration but it didn't seem all that Rider-ish to me anyway.
Someone described the Batman of Japan as being super tokusatsu-ish and I felt like it was pretty toned down.
I expected some henshin bullshit, got something only kinda reminiscent of that.
It's the scarf and pose
Everything is autistic to you people.
You wanted say "This is bad" without giving a reason.
Megas XLR is filled to the brim with references and homages. It's practically Giant Robot and Japanese Mech References: The Show. It's like 50% of the reason why you watched that show.
That shit was fucking based too.
REAL and Vagabond have been going for over 15 years now and are amazing. That author is just great though, he also created Slam Dunk - probably the best shounen manga of all time. It subverts the trope of the main character doing something for a girl so well.
Basically when Slam Dunk starts, the MC starts playing basketball only to impress a girl. But by the time the manga is ending, he barely cares about her anymore and is almost entirely focused on basketball. Plus, it's got obvious comparisons of Rodman, Jordan, and Ewing and other NBA players.
The Clone Wars really liked to do homages in the later seasons, but here's an early season example: the Zillo Beast.
Design and name loosely reference Godzilla. The plot of the Zillo Beast two-parter is almost exactly King Kong, except instead of being consumed by some sort of lustful desire for a human woman, the Zillo Beast is consumed with raw hatred for Palpatine after Palpatine treated it contemptuously in captivity.
Well you might as well call Peridot Dan too.
Teen Titans had that one episode with Invader Zim and FLCL references as the plot
It's like Seth Green doing Hammil's Joker.
>Mfw this was actually foreshadowing
I'm currently rewatching bleach (I had a dream set in the first arc despite having watched it like 6 years ago, woke up and figured I'd give it another shot)
It's painfully obvious that they establish a colourful cast of fun characters, intending to use them, but then forget about them because they have a super cool shadow the hedgehog protagonist with a super awesome big sword holy shit lets have everyone job to big him up.
There are a lot of legitimately awesome characters, Chad is interesting with interesting abilities that are never gone into, Ishida despite being an autistic fuckboy had a pretty unique ability set and backstory and would have made for a good rival character.
But no, fuck them cos they're not the fucking gingernut designate protagonist.
>I'm currently rewatching bleach
Enjoy your filler mixed with even more filler...
Welp. I guess they can't all be One Piece.
>mfw realizing haki was there from the very first issue
>Shanks staring down that sea snake
Perfectly symmetrical violence never solved anything.
Loved this homage to the old Cab Calloway segments of the Fleischer cartoons.
That motion creeps me the fuck out...
Sorry but all I can think of when I see that is this dog
>tfw will never have a Drawn Together Meets Panty and Stocking spinoff movie
>post shows bits replicating the bike slide in Akira, though mostly in other Anime
>responses point out other, namely western shows with a similar scene AS A HOMAGE to Akira
>DURR TALKING ABOUT ANIMAY GUIZ
Mcfucking end yourself with a side of fries
no way, kira was the best. that whole arc topped everything jojo. you got the one joe who has this obscure ability going against kira who has this insane and seemingly invincible ability. he wins against all odds, and kira did have a questionable lifestyle. dio is just a dick because he was an orphan boy.
>Nah that's pretty clearly Jotaro and Dio's first exchange of blows.
Clearly fucking nothing.
Jojo didn't invent fist blows like that, god I hate how bad the Jojo fanbase has gotten.
It's like when you faggots see anyone with an outfit like picture related you think LOLJOTARO
Or like when you're ignorant about the fact ORA was a Japanese battlecry long before Jojo was around
>get really into Godzilla movies in high school
>watch every one I can find
>around this time the Billy & Mandy TV movie airs
>THIS FUCKING SCENE
They even included the obscure fuckers like Gigan, Gamera and (just off screen) Angirus.
Sugar is a Kunihikofag. In an interview, here https://youtu.be/l9rQlh0KxYo at around the 1:20 mark you can see a miniature Himari from Penguindrum laying on her desk. She's a huge weeb.
Never was really that heavy into Bleach, but I'm sad the dynamic between Rukia, Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, and Uryu were lost. Especially Chad his personality and design are uncommon for most "foreigner" characters in anime
Eh, no worse than ninjas or bandits. They don't follow the law but have their own ethic code- like many pirates actually did back in the day (Yes I know, not all of them but still)
