There's a male dwarf character and a female elf character but they didn't interact much. The elf-girl was more a love interest and the dwarf interacted more with the cleric dude. Though it's been a while since I saw it so I might be forgetting some stuff.

This is a good example of a comic that should not have started with an origin story. Despite the art being excellent and the character design being on-point, the actual comic has managed to be a lot worse than the short comics he used to hype it up.

Those preview comics were extremely impressive. They were short and varied but had a great tonal consistency and promised an exploration of a weird, dead world by a mysterious MC without much exposition. The actual comic has been nothing like that - it's been filled with exposition and we are immediately explaining the origins and powers of the MC without getting the weird dead stuff that was so interesting.

It's like the author saw those previews as teasers that had to be elaborated on, when actually they were teasers that people just wanted more pages of that comic right the fuck now. It isn't helped by its update frequency and the various changes because of the irritating formatting of the read-through on the comic's website. I know Jake Wyatt was looking at print and other mediums before confirming this would be online, so I think he's struggled to figure out exactly how he wants to do this story and unfortunately that means it's started as much weaker than the sample comics showed it to be. I am still hopeful and will still be reading but I worry about whether the comic will ever hit those beats as effectively now that we're having this intro.

I'm trying to think of the counterpart to this that wasn't afraid to start things off with a bit of mystery and worked better for that. Battling Boy is maybe an example. In terms of a novel, Use of Weapons is a good example because it's a very good sci-fi novel that would have been a mediocre/good sci-fi novel if the author had stuck to a conventional plotting and structure.

He would never stoop so low and Orson the berserker from Lodoss War was a softy with a heart of gold who's only wish was to shed the spirit of rage which governed his mind when pressed into emotional struggles so he could protect the girl he loves.

Woodchuck was just a dick-ass-thief though, a well-meaning dick, but still a dick.
