So I was already slightly tired of the MCU a long time ago, and Ant Man was the final stroke for me. I think it was good for what it was meant to be, which was a traditional Marvel flick, but thats exactly why I was so bored of it.

Marvel stumbled onto a great formula with Iron Man 1, and since then they really have not change it. Every film and every scene feels like they went through a checklist to make sure they had all the boxes ticked. I also feel like they too often throw away any gravitas a scene has with a quip. I know "quip" is a very common dismissal of MCU films but I think it really is a serious problem.

One thing that does give me hope is if CW can replicate the Winter Soldier. I think thats the best MCU film to get the balance between humour and tension right.

I think the MCU is pretty much unstoppable now, but I do see people, especially people my age who have watched all the movies getting fatigued with how similar they all are.

Strange I am currently cautiously hyped for, pending more info.

Truth be told the "formula" meme is designed to be as vague as it sounds. It's a blind criticism of a successful franchise. And when a franchise with 11 films in 8 years main criticism is something as vague as "formula" it really is a compliment.

For starters you can slap "formula" to just about anything. From Star Wars, to James Bond to Oscar Bait to Indie flicks. The phrase is banal when talking about the quality of a film.

The only real truth to using "formula" across the MCU that actually makes sense is this: Heart, Action, likable characters, a love of the source material, and most concerned with the audience having a good time. This is generally true across all MCU films to varying degree.

Except both GotG and Avengers are basically instant classics just by the sheer charisma and timely existance, even though they are more flawed than Cap2 and AoU, respectively. Also, Thor 2 is one of the prettiest along with GotG even though it's not good. I'm a sucker for the marvel colorful nebulas. The funeral scene is awesome though. Avengers looked like shit, even for Whedon's other work.

I don't think photography was an issue in any of the phase two movies.

Cap 2 was slick (the rooftop chase, for example), although it seemed to need a bit more rendering time at times, it looked blurred-ish.

IM3 was beautiful. all CGI was fucking perfect.

AoU had a couple of blemishes, though. Thor at the begining, Ultron/Legionair grabbing the sceptre and the last Iron Man Armor looked pretty shitty.

I am conscious that Steve won't come out victories in Civil War, his life is tragedy and him basically getting shat on one way or another so I am not expecting him to win just to never stop fighting, inspire some people along the way to never give up, and have him and his team give Tony and his team a humiliating whooping until the time comes when Steve is taken down.

I mean there's that scene in the trailer with Steve and Bucky owning him with the shield, I liked that, but there is no way Steve himself is even a match for Tony in the suit, Tony went toe to toe with Thor and his armor can take getting manhandled by Hulk.

There as also a scene that a reporter from EW saw being filmed that involved Tony flying down at a high speed and hitting Steve making him fall down leaving him dazed and disoriented, so he can take down Iron Man by himself.

I don't get why they keep trying to oversell the franchise. The Star Wars brand sold itself for greater effect (the movie wasn't even that great and everyone loved it), and I'm pretty sure Marvel could do the same to it's own smaller scale. A lot of the spectacle works better as a surprise.

I liked that part in Ant-Man. It all happened off-screen, but they set it up for them being a couple by AM&W. They didn't rob you of any of your time but they established their version of one of the oldest Marvel couples.

Now they only need to go and have an adventure movie in the quantum realm trying to find Catherine Zeta-Janet and let her become bipolar from being suspended conscious in time for 30 years (like Catherine Zeta-Jones is irl and Pym is in the comics), slap Hank Pym's face and become red queen (like Hope in the comics), making it the most meta movie ever.

And if you think about Winter Soldier it was more of a bittersweet one but Bucky was alive and you had the hope of Steve and Sam finding Bucky.

If you are a big Batman fan I can see you thinking that. It does the best with the character, being an origin story it would be a travisty if it didn't.

Fight scenes still suck though and they took an interesting villain and striped away everything that was interesting about him.

Yeah it was a bit of a bummer at the time, but it works great with the rest of his movies and it even manages to connect to the Avengers despite Whedon's best efforts to turn him into the weepy Malcolm Reynolds.

If Civil War is as good as James Gunn said, Cap is preparing himself to have one of the few trilogies where all the films have similar (positive) quality without any major stinkers. The only other one I can think of is LotR.

the skyfall fight is great because it's one single take and you can tell exactly who is fighting who. it's perfectly shot by roger deakins as well.

the watchmen fight is great because it tells you everything you need to know about the character(his old-school boxing stance, the way his left arm is guarding his face) against his opponents. the score also gives it a very good emotional impact
