I usually suggest starting with TRIUMPH & TORMENT, and DOCTOR STRANGE: THE OATH. I also like DOCTOR STRANGE: SEASON ONE, but some don't.

FLIGHT OF BONES isn't bad, and neither is the Waid STRANGE: THE DOCTOR IS OUT mini. Stay away from the JMS STRANGE mini, tho. It's garbage.

Seriously beyond that Marvel has pretty much had no idea what to do with Dr Strange for decades at a time because frankly he's got Mcguffin powerlevels and telling Magic + Cosmic powerlevel comics are hard and Marvel is typically staffed by lazy slackers.

I fucking suggested Strange Tales from the 60s and a graphic novel from the 80s you fucking knob.

I've read plenty of Strange and for the most part Marvel treats him as a magical mcguffin (ala Bendis or the fucking Infinity events) or do stupid shit with him like power him down for long periods where he has to rely on Rintrah or Clea.

If you want an origin story, read Strange Tales #115 (1963), Doctor Strange #169 (1968) or Uncanny Origins #12 (1997). Then after you've read one or more of those, you can read Doctor Strange: Season One if you want. Wong is is a bit different there from how he was originally portrayed, but I think it's great and would love a younger Wong to be more like that if he's ever introduced in the movies.

The one great thing about the MCU is that you can count on them reprinting a bunch of shit that otherwise would never have seen the light of day anytime the character gets a movie or show coming out.

Hopefully that means they reprint Into Shamballa, because fuck me if finding a copy of the original graphic novel that's of decent quality and doesn't cost obscene amounts is at all possible.

Strange really is one of those characters that lends himself better to the silver age of comics which spawned him.
So for the past 15 years or so, like every other character from the silver to bronze age, writers have been trying to reinvent him for the modern day and people either love it because they can't into 'old comics' or hate it cause not muh character.

It's sad to watch because once the movie comes out all the Strange fans are going to polarize themselves and anyone that like old Strange, but dares enjoy ant new iteration of the character gets 'No True Scotsman'd' because clearly never liked him in the first place as far as they're concerned.

Had to buy that shit off eBay, barely touched but still showing some age (not kept on a vacuum sealed bag). Unbelievable art, good story. Worth the purchase. But yeah, they need to reprint that one.

Otherwise, I second Triumph and Torment and the Oath. Great stories to get that Strange vibe. Then read the Eternity Saga by Lee/ Ditko. Then go for whatever else you like. The Sise-Neg story is cool, The Dracula story (Montesi Fórmula), and Into the Dark Dimension and the intervening "Don't pay the Ferryman" trade are fun reads too

Also, agreeing with everyone that the Englehart run is great, though I personally prefer the Stern run. The Montesi Formula is some of the most fun I've ever had from reading a comic.

It's just people recommending what they're familiar with. A lot of Strange's older stuff is out of print, so the modern minis are easy to get. Plus, I think a lot of newbie readers want stuff that's got more modern sensibilities in terms of dialogue/art. Never mind the fact that the original Shuma-Gorath arc is baller as hell.

Of course, with that stated, I find it's easier to give hew readers the modern stuff first, get them hooked, then ease them into the classics. For example, Triumph and Torment mentions that time Dr. Strange killed all the vampires on Earth. They read that, maybe they'll be interested in checking out the Montesi Formula. Trying to start newbies off with Lee/Ditko often doesn't go over as well. At least, that's been my experience.
