Hey /co/ I rolled a die to decide story time choices and this won!
I think it's an interesting enough read
It's extremely so-so, but it knows jackshit about the issues and culture it tries to talk about (Chinese Gold Farmers), to the point of absudity.
So if you shut your brain off you might enjoy it.
>comic by girls and for girls
>about gender again
Thank you, though. Let me know when I can enjoy a girl protagonist without having her gender define her and the story she's in.
To be fair her being a girl has no real baring on the story.
best female mc in comics
made by a man who is famous for his porn
Being a girl and playing video games doesn't make you special. You aren't breaking new ground.
The Senior programmer for Ultima online back in 1992 was a woman. Gaming was never a "boys club". Stop making up shit just to be offended.
>this complete failure to comprehend how video games and MMOs specifically work
I can look past the generic artstyle, the fat and bland MC, and even the shoehorned "LOOK AT ME, I AM A GIRL WHO DOES BOY THINGS, WHAT A REBEL I AM" crap to be entertained by a fun story. If it's a good comic, the rest is just niggling doubts based on appearance.
What I can't look past, however, is this level of inability to properly show and detail a crucial part of the setting and story. This comic's comprehension of video games is practically on the level of "Urban Hellraisers" or "Super Mortal Phil", in terms of just how absurdly far-off it is, and at least those had the excuse that the visuals and workings of the games didn't mean jack-shit to the plot/episode/etc.
If you're going to show and describe shit that's integral to the setting and plot, which is usually outside your comfort zone of hobbies and interests, be really fucking sure you know what you're talking about before putting pen/brush to paper, or you'll look like an idiot in your efforts to describe it even if you're normally-brilliant. This is like a mechanics-minded guy who's never been big on the natural world writing a story about robots, then factoring birdwatching in somehow as the means by which his characters interact, except he describes "birds" as long squishy things that wriggle through the soil and "birdwatching" as the process of smashing them flat underfoot.
All this said, including my prior assertion that I can look past everything else, holy fuck is this loaded down with "fat college girl writes her first 2deep4u story" crap. Fat protagonist, way too much emotional investment in shit that's small or doesn't even matter, MC prone to weird mood swings in public with no context provided to close friends/onlookers, edge for days from certain "cool" characters, and more. It even lacks any scope grander than "fat girl talks to normal people in real world, learns life lesson", which is 90% of these comics.
> I was one of the best gamers in the world
bull fucking shit you grind a fucking mmo
feel free to indulge your delusions of grandeur when you've actually fucking achieved something like Katherine Gunn
Oh yeah I did Oink a little bit ago. I adore that comic
ok, that got to me, I instantly love this
git that dolla
Why bis it a wanted this to end like one of my french comics? Why did raymond have to survive? Why does every ending need to be happy for the protagonists?
Thanks for being a good contributor to /co/
I kinda want to maybe someone could storytime gamergirl too
Ah hell here it is
It had some interesting ideas, but it was really brought down by the author clearly not knowing how MMOs work, at least not very well. I've only played FFXIV and it was really nothing like this.
I'm also still confused by the Liza character. Like, who is she that she's just randomly invited to a class? Is she someone that actually worked on the development of the game? It strikes me as really strange that she would be allowed to basically encourage kids to buy a video game on what is essentially a dare in a class.
>implying mexican is a language
is there people that actually believe this?
>I've only played FFXIV and it was really nothing like this.
Well yeah? Try playing other games like LOTRO. Being in a tight community was fun. Some elements reminds me of like killing gold farmers (In UO heydays. They weren't chinese multiboxers though. Just people taking up resources and I was just being an ass because I wanted the resources). It's mostly a fluffed up story but I don't think it really matters except to hardcore gamers.
no you mongoloid, mexican is a race, we speak latin american spanish, spaniards speak "castellano", how is this so difficult to understand
now, nahuatl, THAT is a dialect
I like the comic, but that was dumb
ANON WAIT. EXPLAIN THIS METAPHORICAL MESS.
TOO LATE THIS TRAIN DOESN'T HAVE BREAKS
>hired a private dick to find her family's lost shamisen
>never bothered to just ASK for it back from the guy that looted it decades ago
>instead she just fucking nicks it, and the sleuth is totally okay with this
This is silly.
The art was pretty. I'll keep an eye out for whatever Jen Wang does next. As for the story, well, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief about the MMO stuff, but if you want to talk about Chinese youth, their working conditions, and the role of the internet there, that is some extremely fruitful ground and it really felt like the writer didn't do much beyond basic research. Especially with the whole "white American enlightens the Chinese about the power of collective bargaining" thing. The intro claiming the book is about economics also had me expecting something more than "people make money on MMOs, and other people don't want them to".
Oh well. It was a nice change of pace, at least. Thanks for posting, Dan.
everyone wants to have sex all the time with everyone else you don't have to point it out and it is a bad overused joke.
>I'm thinking of having sex with you right now anon. are you a bottom? you are now!
>Ex-husband. He took all the goods, and left you with nothing.
>Closer, but still no
Hinting some part of it was true. So it might of then an ex. Like an ex-boyfriend or family member that took it away.
Not how logging out works
Why the fuck even make the MMORPG a major element if you don't know how they work. Fuck your creative liberties, learn how things work before writing about them ffs
>people just finding out that Cory Doctorow can't write
I wish I could go back in time and tell my highschool-era self to never read Little Brother, that was some of the dumbest self-insert bullshit I've seen in my life.
It was "youth culture" as written by a guy who's conception of teenagers doesn't go past the movie Hackers.
