Good evening owls of /co/,
I have many useful appendages?
Oh shit, we missed a Heroes for Hire crossover issue? Gotta fix that later...it's not in the folder, poo.
Clint, you are a dork
How are you owls tonight? I got fuck-all done today, BUT I GOT REAL SLEEP so I don't care
thanks for mashing one of my big emotional buttons here, Busiek
dat Gyrich flat top
>How are you owls tonight?
Well.... Y'know, I bitch about how Graviton is a lame villain, but truthfully, making a decent antagonist is not easy. I keep trying, but I keep coming up with fucking nothing remotely satisfying.
>How are you owls tonight? I got fuck-all done today, BUT I GOT REAL SLEEP so I don't care
I worked out today and now I feel like I'm going to die or puke (or both)
hopefully soon I won't be so out of shape that I feel awful when I exercise!
Seeley linked to a nice rebuttal of the anti-Grayson stuff
I was gonna go today but 1) sweet sleep 2) apparently it was overcrowded anyways
That was well done, and the focus on how 'this is problematic' is being used as a weapon for "I don't like this" is very important to keep in mind.
the inability to live and let live wrt tastes in fiction is annoying, too
Apparently Marvel is trying to fight monthly attrition with... recap variants!
I'd be inclined to go with the sleep first, too
a friend has some workout videos that she apparently really likes so we've been doing those in her living room
Just randomly browsing Twitter, I see
>Okay, but how much better would DC/Marvel's straight white hero comics be if they were written by more women?
I mean...maybe? More women writing is good, less "one dude writing four books he's been handed by Editorial" is good, but eh, whatever
I guess I can say that I look forward to the day when more women are part of the reliable hack writer stables of the Big Two, there.
OH YOU NAIVE FOOL, you invited Karla in to talk?
Yeah if you have a bunch of women writing what editorial tells them to then it probably won't be good.
Writers are usually best when writing their own stuff, can control what they're writing, and are on characters they like.
Like >>78675693 said, Bennett is pretty bland and inoffensive but Bombshells is her best work since editorial doesn't give a shit about it.
Karla, you truly are top-fucking-tier.
OH, there was a follow up tweet, this makes sense now
>I mean if we have to have them, think of how many of those heroes wouldn't be such sexist dicks if women were writing them.
>What I'm saying is that DC should hire me to write Jason Todd.
there's this weird Batfanon of Feminist Jason Todd idea floating around out there, IIRC
I would like to see more women writers in general, and I would like to see them not restricted solely to writing female characters, but "wouldn't these male hero solos be better if women were writing them!" seems like a different thought process
Yeah, this is a "we're all free to like what we do" zone, explanations of why you like it are even better, and at best some gentle mockery may ensue if you're really into what, I dunno, Xanth novels.
I think there are probably tics some readers are super-sensitive to that women are less likely to write, so that makes sense.
Jason truly has some of the worst fans.
Not as bad as Dick but he's certainly up there.
I do find it funny how little fucks DC really gives about Jason despite the fact that he's gonna be in a movie and will probably be Loki 2.0. Like damn give him to somebody who isn't Lobdell or Snyder Jr.
I get what the poster is going for now, at least
I am thiiis close to starting a "document the Batfanon in the wild" project that would take a huge amount of time and be pointless but gratifying, so that there'd be something to point at when it pops up
> I would write Jason Todd to take down street harassers while telling them exactly why misogyny is toxic shit.
that sounds like a thrilling comic, yes. And yet I could do with less thoughtless sexism in my comics--save it for when it's a deliberate character choice.
I love you, Karla. Graviton is such a fucking loser.
>Yeah, this is a "we're all free to like what we do" zone, explanations of why you like it are even better, and at best some gentle mockery may ensue if you're really into what, I dunno, Xanth novels.
I like Artemis Fowl and Frozen. Frankly, anyone who has a problem with that can kiss my soggy ass. Tired of this "everything is shit" attitude.
You know, despite the ladies, I still haven't seen Frozen?
and I don't like Idina Menzel's voice/technique :(
It's more that I think the song itself is strong, but I don't like how she's on the edge of belting the whole time. Too pushed/forced.
I feel the same way about Kristen Chenoweth: it's painful to hear her sing "Glitter and Be Gay" compared to the classical ladies (she also mugs, and less is so much more in musical comedy)
Less is kind of more in comedy comics, too, isn't it
I LOVE YOU KARLA
True, that's not really trying to have a story at the same time, though...well, it kind of is, but...
So has Graviton ever met Magneto? Considering he's got a god complex over controlling one of the four fundamental forces of reality, I'm curious how he'd treat someone who controls one of the other four.
I keep hoping he'll take a break and bust out another Vertigo title
it's kind of New Weird, lots of grotesquerie, tends to be grim
I don't actually like that that much! Apart from Embassytown, which is pretty great. For weird urban fantasy (and even SF) I am more of a M. John Harrison guy - but Dial H is really good.
I just want to say that people who bitch about recommendation threads because they think the people requesting comics are lazy or aren't REALLY interested, are the fucking worst part of this board.
That's my vent for the night. Thanks for the thread again, OP.
>This is what I've trained for since I was a teenager.
You've trained all your life to deal with physics raping idiots who occasionally threaten to break the world in two because they decided to have a spaz attack?
...... Actually, that's a fair description of what you do. Carry on.
Yeah, she fought Zemo in the annual and Cap was all "hon, lose the padding, I know boobs when I bump up against them"
Really, who in the X-Men hasn't gone crazy and tried to fuck the world at least once?
is this before or after Archangel went all metal-armored dude?
I don't really watch TV or movies
Anon, with Big Two comics, if they want to read a certain character, they may have appearances in other books.
Or there may be a book that's horrible that they're in (see: Waypool)
>I bet my eyeteeth on it.
What the hell does "eyeteeth" even mean?
>to give something one considers very precious, usually in exchange for an object or situation one desires
Hm. Okay then. Fucking idioms.
Thanks, X-books are also not an area I am read in
I watched the 1992 cartoon first run, though
Hawkeye's arms...those are some arms...
Hallie's had a lot of shocks in her short life.
Because if you cared, you would've just Googled it. Why do you need advice from a bunch of assholes who hang out in the worst shithole on the Internet?
>Anon, with Big Two comics, if they want to read a certain character, they may have appearances in other books.
>Or there may be a book that's horrible that they're in (see: Waypool)
Whether something is bad or not is for the individual reader to decide. Some people like Waypool.
But Google doesn't really tell you shit in terms of "read this for this character in this style". And if you ask here, people will often say "Read this if you like this", and those chains of association are useful.
Since he became a fanon mouthpiece, I guess
I love this kind of "we know who the other person is but we're pretending not to" keikaku
also, this is far from the worst shithole on the Internet
>But Google doesn't really tell you shit in terms of "read this for this character in this style".
Which is where bit of independent research should begin. But that is apparently too much effort.
Neither am I, believe it or not. But I read Reminder's Uncanny X-Force, which takes place after this, and I have a general knowledge of the original Apocalypse arc from X-Factor.
Since his character is constantly getting yanked around and so instead of settling on a specific personality fans just mash various traits together and then use him as a mouthpiece.
Now you're just being cranky to be cranky. Do you get mad when I get all "Tell me what was good this week?" :(
The arguments on this site are pretty sensible even though I get some major red flags (neopaganism does trigger me, and I hate this "problematic fave" shit). I also like the call-out to JKR not focusing on black Hermione but on, no, JKR absolutely did not fucking write that character as black and you should not credit her for that.
Seriously? I can think of five more vile and abusive sites right off the top of my head.
Here's the problem, Anon. Not everybody is willing to stick through shit to get to the gems, especially if they're new to comics. For instance, when I read Hellblazer (took a few months between my job, but I managed), I found it a chore to get through the original Delano run. If I didn't know for a fact that there's good runs after, I wouldn't have been invested enough not only to stick it through to the good runs, but force my way through the bad ones to see the story to the end.
Jason has like 5 or 6 different versions of his character that barely flow with one another (precrisis, angry Robin, Winick, Morrison, Lobdell) so it's just easier to make up shit or flanderize what you do like and get mad when writers don't use it.
>complaining that people are not reading comics is killing this place
That's crap. The comments section of Youtube is better than 4chan. At least those idiots don't take outright PRIDE in being the most toxic assholes they can possibly be.
I put the subreddits where dudes post pictures of upskirts way above /co/ in terms of being shitty. MRA blogs with an active commentariat.
>Not everybody is willing to stick through shit to get to the gems
Too bad. Life has good things, but it's mostly filled with garbage. If you're not willing to sift though the trash, you don't deserve any treasure.
>That's crap. The comments section of Youtube is better than 4chan. At least those idiots don't take outright PRIDE in being the most toxic assholes they can possibly be.
what about people that post in comments with their facebook profiles, those people don't give a fuck how retarded and awful they are
/co/ still isn't THAT bad, you really think we're worse than stormfront or those shitty MRA sites? being an asshole about comics is one thing, being a complete piece of shit in every other area of your life is another
If someone comes to me and says "I want to get into Verdi", I'm not going to fucking tell them to start with Oberto.
No, complaining about being helpful to newcomers is killing this place. You know, when I was knew to this board, I didn't know much and asked a lot of questions that, in hindsight, were kind of stupid. And you know what? People just answered them helpfully. To see that board culture go away honestly breaks my heart. And to see you just shit on the concept of being helpful to others is making me angry in ways it's hard to articulate.
Shit, I love giving recs. Someone coming back later and telling me what they thought, don't care if they loved or hated it, really, it's just good to her
forget it, cranky anon is going to be cranky and there's nothing you can do about it
Fuck off to /a/. There you can be in your secret club complaining about about newfags wanting to be spoonfed. Or fuck off to /mu/, where you can complain about how everyone else is less sophisticated than you are. Just fuck off, because you never have anything thoughtful to say.
Back when the Crossed fandom was still burgeoning there was this anon who thought that me giving recs for arc was a bit fascist...I was just sharing what I thought was good.
Reddit strikes me as extremely variable, but the lows are very, very low.
guys DC kinda listens to us!
one day i''ll get to those sci-fi/fantasty books you've recced
>And to see you just shit on the concept of being helpful to others is making me angry in ways it's hard to articulate.
That's because deep down, you know I'm right. I don't want to be right about this, but it's a fundamental fact that compassion is wrong. You're just letting people take advantage of you, and that's sad.
>you really think we're worse than stormfront or those shitty MRA sites?
We have /pol/. We're worse by default as we deliberately host on amalgam of all that shit.
We can storytime though.
Mostly useful for discussions of older comics -- it's hard to get a conversation going about, say, Busiek-era Thunderbolts or Archie Legion if you're just relying on people that read it at some point before.
Here, let me show you the worst MRA/PUA site I think I've found, tinyurl'd so it won't show up by name:
they're mixed on my amazon wishlist with other books so now i'm not sure what all there is and am embarrassed by that post
one i do know from here is
The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories
Man /pol/ is REALLY, REALLY like reddit MRA boards. Like you could sample random posts that weren't just gibberish and you probably wouldn't be able to easily tell. I imagine there must be a huge userbase overlap as well.
>it's a fundamental fact that compassion is wrong
holy shit dude
>We can storytime though.
oh that's a good point, at best on reddit you'll get a few pages with no context
VINTAGE FALCON COSTUME!
I'm gonna sit you down and make you watch Parsifal with me, anon.
So gardening in this climate is weird, in that I'm cleaning up beds etc., and I have to go "Is this dead, or dormant?" and can't tell with plants I got recently and don't know how they behave.
Also it's supposed to be 36 tonight and will be 71 by Thursday
I love Hawkeye's face and judgement here. Also, this isn't topical at all
There's kind of been a bit of a turn around on this PUA stuff. Like you have Neil Strauss, Tucker Max turning around their old opinions into 'use this as a way to improve your own sense of worth, be the best you you can be' and shit. And female commentators in the market like Arden Leigh.
This is kind of a Kirby Cap-style plot thematically, isn't it
I think that's probably an improvement
but the one I linked, read the comments, do. it's gross.
Oh, weird. If you actually WANT to read the site, google H-e-a-r-t-i-s-t-e
since we're talking books
k but it's a mismash of junk, most of which i can't remember why i put them there but i'm trusting past me.
3C2L4JLYC93ZQ be gentle
i don't understand the question?
Well, it's true. Helping people for so called "altruistic" reasons only ever ends badly. Either someone was taking advantage, or your efforts ultimately amount to nothing. Not to mention the concept of altruism is a complete myth to begin with.
Din get mad at me for pointing out the obvious.
OH, was that the guy who posted a list of nothing but, like, onaholes?
>or your efforts ultimately amount to nothing
I mean...it's just recommending.
Not gonna take a big part of my life to say "this is good, check that out"
Especially when I made a pic for that purpose either.
>What about intimacy in a relationship? What’s the rule of thumb for her/you initiating non-sexual intimacy?
>What about intimacy in a relationship? What’s the rule of thumb for her/you initiating non-sexual intimacy?
>Omega Men may not have as many readers as Batman or Justice League, but the ones it has are dedicated and weren’t shy about sharing that dedication on Twitter and Facebook. The outcry was instantaneous and loud, and when DC later reversed the decision and said they’d be giving The Omega Men the full twelve issues that were originally promised, so was the celebration.
I choose to regard this as a small personal victory
Man there is nothing to be ashamed of there. I grew up on Wyndham, Banks (at least the books you got there) is good. Chesterton and Atwood are great. I'm not gonna be gentle because I don't have to be.
>i could be that insane about like LOSH or Wally West but I'd feel too bad openly shitting on creators like that.
sometimes I feel that insane about certain characters/things but I try not to be shitty about creators to their faces, even if I talk shit on /co/
Hey look, it's evil (rule 63?) Sneckie.
>I mean...it's just recommending.
And? It's still wasting your time to do so. These people don't care about comics. They'd have looked it up themselves if they did.
Why? Because I don't want to be a dick to people doing their jobs even if I don't like how they do them? It's just comics no matter how worked up they make me, I don't want to be a huge asshole over them.
>And alright, he's been ignoring me all thread anyway
That's because you had the utter gall top compare me to pirates, Dave.
How fucking dare you equate me with those filthy sub-human pieces of shit? Kiss my ass, dude.
>redeemed heroic earth mother character
ugh ugh ugh ugh
i just want a good creative team on Flash
Ostrander Suicide Squad Ivy, dammit. Venal, but with good taste in boytoys.
Anyway I decided to buy you some shit. Wouldn't been comics, but while I was okay with your books I was super not interested in your comics. Hope you enjoy a late Christmas present.
oh fuck thanks man!
fingers crossed. King on GL like people are hoping is not the cosmic book I'd want him doing but be good to see him working up the ladder.
Honestly it's hilarious to me at this point how much he gets benched
>Honestly it's hilarious to me at this point how much he gets benched
I know right
Has he even showed up in the past couple issues after merging with Black Racer?
Though perhaps closer to his movie date he'll get a digital anthology...
GL is fine, L.E.G.I.O.N. would be "The universe listens to me?!"
Suicide Squad had a great Ivy. I hate when people think her "I'm doing it for the plants and women's rights" thing is legit and not a bullshit excuse.
There's no such thing as friendly pirates.
The closest you'll ever get is one who shoots you in the back of the head instead of the front. Either way, your family is only getting your lifeless body back after they've paid the ransom.
GL would be a good fix-it, or at least a "get the ship back on course", the toys aren't broken so much as just dirty.
I'm still behind on current JL
my other goal for the year is to read all of Cerberus. I know a kind anon storytimed it, but it's the kind of thing I'd either need to run, or sit and read at my own pace. Wouldn't mind finding a phonebook or two.
(I've read some parts of Cerberus, just not the whole thing as a whole thing)
Hey, you know how you were talking about how you couldn't think of a good villain? How about somebody who does terrible things and justifies it because they say the world is terrible, totally ignorant to the fact that they are what makes the world terrible? Someone who sings the praises of being cruel and heartless, but gets defensive whenever they are called as such? Someone who calls people who believe in being good to others naive, but keeps claiming that they are a good person?
One of the dudes made a fortune off medical tech, that was mentioned
Says the man decrying helping people read new comics in a thread dedicated to helping people read comics they never heard before. I think the reason you're having a hard time writing people is because you have no awareness of people or the world around you.
I want to see the girl get a serious beatdown, at least of her self-image
>you have no awareness of people or the world around you
Pfft. If only that were the case, I'd be a lot happier.
Honestly, I don't understand why you're so passionate about this. Pretending for a moment that your method of getting new people into comics works (it doesn't, but we'll pretend) what the hell benefit is there to this? What, you WANT to bring in more people to endlessly bitch that everything is shit and how other websites are ruining the comics that suck anyway? .....Sounds great.
No one is holding a gun to your head and making you be here, anon.
Then be sure to practice firearm safety when you do it?
Yes. I want to bring more people into comics, because comics have made me happy and I think there are a lot of people who would be happy about them too. I wish there was a way I could make you happy, but I don't think you want to be.
>No one is holding a gun to your head and making you be here, anon.
It's like that everywhere though. That's just how nerds work now. Nobody likes anything, regardless of any recommendations you give.
Yeah, Dave. Talking about comics sounds like a nice time, in Candyland. Here in reality though, a conversation consists of a bunch of idiots bitching all day about how everything they supposedly read is garage.
Hooking people up with the right comics for them is the same glee I get when I go thrifting and find the perfect thing for someone (especially when it's $1.29 a pound)
B-but, clearly people here have come to like the Legion after we read it
and Jared, who the fuck would have thought Jared Stephens would ever have fans
Thanks for reading and discussing, good owls. More tomorrow--is there comics-related TV tomorrow?
>You'll pay! You'll pay!
What, no "We'll meet again, Thunderbolts!" or "I'll have my vengeance soon enough!" or even a "Next time, Thunderbolts! NEXT TIIIIIIIIME!!!!"?
You may as well indulge in ALL the cliches at this point.
Yeah, but notice the keyword "we", as in us in JSA Storytime. We are pretty much the only people on /co/ who read or even acknowledge to existence of the Legion or Jared. And we are the only threads that actually engage in civil conversation on a consistent basis. Everyone else just comes here to bitch and moan.
BTW, we're about to shift over to FabNic, but we're just going to keep going because I am totally into this run.
>I've been in civil threads.
And so have I. We're in the only one on the board right now, and it's helpfully labelled every night.
What the fuck is with you and Crossed? I don't even know what the hell that is. Nor do I care.
>Crossed is an edgy horror comic that nonetheless has a reasonably cheery fandom on /co/
Sounds like shit.
Sounds like intentionally retarded shit. No fucking thanks.
You know, when I see recs about something I actually am familiar with they're generally pretty decent. Sometimes bad, sometimes blatant trolling, but it's generally a good starting point. and no, a quick Google won't really help.
No, that isn't until she takes over Reed's Ms. Marvel run.
