How is it a guy who worked on one of the best cartoons around still emulates hockey anime tropes and cliches?

Some of the weeaboo moments in Steven Universe are just flat-out embarrassing, it comes across like a 15-year old drawing kawaii faces on bad doodles. I'm still grappling with the fact that people that grew up watching the things I grew up watching are making television shows professionally and mining my childhood for inspiration and parody.

It's the most surreal fucking thing to see a legit unambiguous reference to Sailor Moon or DBZ in a children's cartoon or a similarity to anime in general beyond a hacky attempt to simulate the art style.

But I will say, even for a slap stickish show like this the dojo scene kinda showed of some action choreography, even if it was silly. Like posts above, I'm glad nerds who watched anime are taking some aspects like fight scene/drama/and humor from it.
