Spider-Man has long outstayed its welcome for me, and from what I see now I was totally justified in my decision to drop it long ago. I feel like taking Mary Jane away from Peter and keeping May alive was their fall back to keep the series going when they ran out of ideas for the ongoing conflict of dual identities and the what-it-means-to-be-a-hero element which should have been long since dealt with. Tired of the angst, tired of the writers relying on May dying again and again to fill up issues until they have any good ideas, tired of the same internal conflict Peter's been dealing with forever.

There's just nowhere for the character to go. In the old Spider-Man comics, she had a purpose: she was Peter's only guardian, and she could keel over whenever, so she was kind of another source of angst. Then Peter grew up and got his own house, and now Aunt May's got nothing to do.

I hated Spider-man, no I literally loathed the motherfucker. He had a super-model wife who coddled him. An Aunt who adored him. He had a super-powered girl in leather who would do anything for him. I could never stand to listen to someone whine like that.

Then someone handed me JMS Ezekiel saga. And I was beginning to love Spider-man. He was being honest with his Aunt. Instead of being a 'freelance photographer', he was a school teacher.

It everything that had come before had led to an actual young adult. A role model. A flawed relatable one, but still a role model. And then Sins Past and Civil War came. And I watched with baited breath, how would this affect my adult Spider-man and his wife. Enter OMD.

OMD was it. I can't read Slotts run, with Parker back to being a man-child. I don't want to read about Miles 'look at me I'm black" Morales going through puberty and discovering girls.

The thing is, OMD could have been the perfect end to what JMS run stood for. Peter realizes part of growing up is accepting that you lose people. Instead he makes deals with devils and messes with the fabric of space time, jerk off.
