It's a highly destructive beam of raw power. He can obliterate mountains with a glance. So it's got great offensive capabilities, but besides that, it has no other use.

What's more interesting is Scott's talent for spatial geometry. Has there ever been an explanation as to WHY he has that ability?

The only theory I could come up with is that because of the head injury which prohibits him from "shutting" the blasts down, his mind is linked to the dimension where the energy comes from. It overlays with 616, thus Scott's perception is shaped by geometric patterns.
