Gunn humor:
>She has no idea. If I had a blacklight, this place would look like a Jackson Pollock painting.
>That dude there. I need his prosthetic leg.
>Well I wasn't listening then, I was thinking about something else.

Whedon humor:
>I don't see how that's a party
>.....he's adopted.
>Puny God
>>
>>64710883
Hey, both that adopted line and the puny god line where funny as shit. The party line is terrible though. And overall GoTG was way funnier
>>
I really dislike Whedon's humor. It takes you out of the scene with it's awkwardness.
>>
>>64710883
I can't tell what you're trying to argue here. Different writers have different senses of humor?
>>
>>64710883
>>.....he's adopted.
>>Puny God
What's wrong with either of these lines?
>>
>>64710883

'He's adopted' was fucking great, and 'Puny God' was half a sight gag.
>>
>>64710883

I heard the blacklight thing was Pratt improv.
>>
Pratts delivery on the Jackson Pollock painting line was so fucking perfect.
>>
I remember Cabin in the Woods being a bit better with the humor, I guess he's better with situational than purely written
>>
>>64711080
Cabin in the Woods wasn't directed by Whedon though
>>
Man of Steel humor:

I don't know what it is, it's just so by the numbers.

Puny god and adopted are basically the same joke in that

You weren't rolling in the aisles, laughing, when Clark went to church and talked about how he had to give himself up to save all of humanity, in front of a strained glass window of Jesus?

I must be 6, because that dif make me gigglein the cinema.

I suppose it's mostly due to Giamatti' ridiculous expressions.

James Gunn funnier than Josh Whedon? Perish the fault.

Fuck's sake, Gunn worked for Troma...Whedon did fucking Dollhouse.
>>
>>64711223
Just wait until DC and Marvel both do 3 movies a year each. We'll need a new board.
>>
>>64710883
It's not enough that we have console wars between DC and Marvel. We have to have threads where people shitpost about Marvel movies and say how Marvel movies are better.
>>
>>64711223

Yeah, no. /tv/ is the worst board on 4Chan. Yep, even worse than /v/.
>>

I'm sure there's at least a single funny line in MoS. I'll find it. I will find it. I WILL find it. I WILL FIND IT!!

I found it ON A FAAARM!

The "party" joke scene in Avengers would have worked better if Natasha didn't say the one-liner. It would've worked better with just Tony saying his line, turning the corner, giant Leviathan monster behind him. It could've been a visual gag.

I honestly don't even remember that, I must have turned off my brain at that part in the movie.

I can verify.

It mostly consists of people straight from /sp/ who are too dumb to swim in /co/, so they go to the most accessible board which is /tv/.
>>

And these movie threads and the people who make and post in them (you) belong there. Show some goddamn restraint.

Whedon also co-wrote the first Toy Story film, after all.

Wow, did you guys hate the party line that much?

I can't figure out why and It's fucking with me. Sure it was a little awkward but ya'll act like it ruined the entire third act.

Mods have said the comic movies can go in both places.

So it's still cool to be ragging on Whedon right now? How much longer until Age of Ultron until we start acting like we're the odd guys out who like him and start ragging on Gunn? I really need to keep up better with /co/ trends.

I really wish Guardians weren't connected to the rest of the Marvel universe. I know that's where half the ticket revenue directly came from, but I would be so much more confident in the property if I knew it didn't half to revolve around Tony Stark and Thor's faggot antics on Earth.

Guardians should be able to tell whatever stories it wants, not kowtow to fifteen other movies.
>>
>>64711262
That's part of the /co/nsole war. It doesn't stop at comics, and it never has.
>>
>>64711503
My entire point was there are no "console wars" between DC and Marvel here because unlike /v/, nobody is obligated to take sides and invest several hundred dollars into one thing.

It's usually some dude trying to force it.
>>

Oh hi. Welcome to /co/. You seem like an idiot. You'll fit right in here :^)

Eh I think the issue is not different sense of humour but GotG tried to be more serious and less funny yet had some really funny moments. Where as the Avengers comes off as trying to be funny/witty. /co/ was in love with him not too long ago. People were praising him for having Avengers be a good comic film that wasn't trying to be serious and actually did what it set out to do. Now people are mocking him like mad here. It's a fad, and it will go away after Age of Ultron. Everyone will act like they were never the anons saying these things now and have always loved him and his writing. happens all the fucking time.
>>
>>64711558
Oh you made another post! Ha. Ha. Ha. You're lucky if at least thirty percent of the catalog isn't DC vs. Marvel: Dawn of Shitposting at any given moment.
>>
>>64711668
fun fact, /co/ just buys whatever they want and it's entirely possible to keep track of both.

Stop making shit up and being contrarian, it's why /tv/ and /v/ are in the state they are now.
>>
>>64711641
No one's arguing that taking one side is retarded. But it still happens, and it's as shitty here as /v/'s console wars.
>>
>>64711524
The first one seemed fairly unrestricted by the rest of the MCU, and I don't see any reason why the sequel will be any different.
>>
Whedon was funnier in Astonishing X-Men
>>
>>64711687
If anything, Whedon praise is the fad. Whedon hate has been the default here for years. Even when Avengers was getting praise there were still a lot of people criticizing the dialogue and Whedon's tendency to give everyone the same speech style.

Since the day Avengers was released, the overwhelming consensus was "wow, that was actually coherent and not complete garbage" and "BRAVO JOSS". There wasn't much praise involved.

People have been criticizing his writing since Buffy. Don't make bullshit where there is none.
>>
>>64711696
People aren't disagreeing with you just to be dicks, they just don't agree with your perception. If anything, your statements are the contrarian ones, and you're the one taking this into pointless polarise arguing. You're becoming the thing you hate, anon.
>>
>>64711524
Yeah, I'd hate it if they ever got to meet (on the movies, I mean). Hell, I'd hate it if villains from GotG got to fight the superheroes from MCU. I didn't see GotG as a superhero movie, they were two completely different genres, and, for the most part, I completely ignored the fact that it all was supposed to happen on the same universe. Being aware of that feels weird.
>>
>>64711782
From the trailers I thought GotG would be goofy as fuck. But everything sorta did fit it. Authentic is a good word to describe it.

Where as tonally Avengers.. was that witty Whedon style. And it is alright but not fantastic.
>>
>>64711755
I don't think that's what he was implying.
>>
>>64711827
I was against them meeting too until another anon pointed out how funny the initial fight scene between them would be. The Avengers are all about getting knocked down and then uniting as a well-oiled machine. The GotG contrast this, being a team of weirdos that work relatively well together but constantly fuck up their plans and have to improvise on the spot.
>>
>>64711696
This denial is on a whole other level.
>>
>>64711827

>I was against them meeting too until another anon pointed out how funny the initial fight scene between them would be.

But that's where the fun ends. It's just a few minutes of fanfic-tier action, maybe three or four times they play off each other, and then just a slog of bullshit that devalues all of their stories.

There's a reason Alien vs. Predator was awful.

When you watch Avengers in a theater for the first time with an audience, it's hilarious.

For the sixtieth time home alone, the humor gets really fucking annoying. Most of the Cap lines, some Clintasha lines, the only bareable ones are Stark's, Fury's, and some of Banner's
>>
>>64711139
Rumor has it you can expect more of the same in Batman v Superman.

What really blew me away though was that from what I hear there was no lead up time to the announcement for Batman v Superman. Apparently when they announced it at Comic-Con it was only days after the execs at WB had decided to do it. Like someone said "oh, so what are we doing for Comic-Con next week? Uh how about a Batman and Superman film? Sure go with it"
>>
>>64711337
They don't, but the unrelenting seriousness doesn't work. Nolan's movies were serious but even they had lighter moments, usually the banter between Bruce and Alfred.
>>
>>64710883
Gunn might be funnier than Whedon but I think Gunn's pretty weak in the action department. All the fights were pretty generic and unimpressive. Even Avengers had some really cool action moments.
>>
>>64713262
True enough, for all their grit and "dark tone" they still maintained a sort of dry sense of humor that is perfectly suited to Batman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DtP3t-vY1A

I think Warners learned the wrong lesson from the Nolan Bat-films and the result is going to be a series of dreary, grim, overly serious superhero movies.
>>
I think Gunn has a better sense of character.
>>
It's settled then.

Gunn handles the humor, the Russo brothers handle the choreography, and they team up for the sentimental moments.

>PETER TAKE MY HAND

>On your left
>>
>>64712654
>now if you want to grouse that everyone talks the same way, that's fair

Yeah, this is what I wanted to get at too.

The characters are all so different but they're all capable of banter on the same level. At least Gunn recognized that in an intergalactic setting some saying and mannerisms were bound to go over someone's head.
>>
>>64710991
"He's adopted" is just something that literally anyone could come up with.

This is something I really dislike about him. All of his characters are the same variation of snark, snarking back and forth at each other, even if they've got no god damn reason to. It really comes across as a writer trying to prove he's funny with oh-so-witty one liners, whereas Gunn's humour in GotG was more character driven.

>>
>>64713881
>ha ha intern's intern, so funny, let's make him an actual character!
>>
>>64713561
This is how he defended Storms lightning/toad line in X-Men (one of the few things from Whedon's attempted rewrite that were kept in). He basically meant for the line to be delivered in the usual slippant, sassy tone that all of his lines are delivered... nevermind that Storm isn't the kind of character that would deliver a line like that. So no matter how it was delivered, it would've been a bad line.
>>
>>64713621
No, they'll still be a ragtag bunch of misfits succeeding from a combination of luck and brains. Or something. That's how they write these movies now.
>>
>>64712552
No shit its all thematically connected, but as a standalone film, GoTG works on its own.
>>
>>64711038
No, it wasn't written in the script but, after a few takes, Gunn told him to add it
>>
>>64714324
It bothers me that this movie will never have its own mythos. There's always going to be the same asgard, thor and loki, avengers bullshit overshadowing anything they could come up with. It's sort of awkward, like, what happens on the Iron Man 3 (why didn't the others come to help?)

Really, the MCU is a mess of genres molded into a barely understandable arc. While it's bearable, it's sort of annoying.
>>
>>64714648
Gunn has stated hopes of turning Cosmic into its own branch of movies, unconnected to the rest of the MCU.
>>
>>64714707

So when they want Star Lord leading the Avengers he'll get Wright'd?
>>
>>64714736

>>
>>64714780

That's actually a good point
>>
>>64714707
I doubt that could happen anytime soon. I mean, maybe they'd let him do some side stories that aren't part of the main narrative, but right now Feige is more likely wanting to push out Phase 3.

Maybe there could be actual one-shots that are just one-shots, and actually film length.
>>
>>64714780
or maybe with rdj leaving and chris evans looking to leave they will need poach him from the already successful franchise
>>
>>64715016
Marvel has stated they'll just replace the actors if need be. Besides, they have Bucky to take up the Cap mantle.
>>
>>64715085
Feige also said he's done signing people for ridiculously long contracts. He said he's far more interested in 3 film contracts now. Probably got tired of the Avengers cast bitching about not getting their dough.
>>
>>64715085
I doubt they can strike gold like they did with rdj and sebastian stan has about as much star appeal as a old bag of dead cum.
hopefully they work something out, depends how ant man and the rest of the upcoming movies go.

Don't you know that Superman is a serious and grimdark character?

That's why metropolis is gritty and grey.
>>
>>64714648
There was I time where I believed Marvel was more edgy than DC.
Now I don't.

>sebastian stan has about as much star appeal as a old bag of dead cum.

You could've said the same thing about Chris Evans and Hemsworth before Cap and Thor.
>>
>>64715359
Evans had a few starring roles, so he had potential. Hemsworth was indeed a nobody, though.

Troma was based in the 80's. Then their movies became too self-aware.

>It bothers me that this movie will never have its own mythos.

you are both right and wrong. whilst it will be in the same universe with asgard and midgard and what have you, the cosmic aspect of the marvel universe is a sub-universe in of itself. hell, cosmic marvel has been a dumping ground for a lot of "weirder" ideas for the writers at marvel

Unrelenting seriousness does a disservice to Superman as a character.

I WILL FIND HIM!!!

Yea... I'm saying those quotes were all funny...
>>
Can someone explain why everyone hates the "I don't see how that's a party" line?

Is it overrated as extremely funny or what?
>>
>>64716370
It's just a bad line. It's not even needed. Since when is BW snarky?
>>
>>64716418
I don't understand what's so bad about it though. Everyone laughed. It wasn't snark. It was humor.
>>
>>64716600
the line is out of place and even then delivered by a character who wouldn't say that. it's that simple.
>>
>>64716658
>>64716418
I don't think you guys really know what qualifies as snarky.
>>
>>64716736
Take away whether it was snarky or not, it's out of character for Widow and it wasn't even needed. Typical Whedonism.
>>
>>64716658
It's not out of place. Tony says "I'm bringing the party to you" literally right before she says that.
Why wouldn't she say it? She's not a serious character. She plays the straight man to herself so she can get a laugh by doing something wacky, though it is usually physical butt whooping comedy.
>>
>>64716736
You're sounding pretty snarky there, bud.
>>
>>64716789
Quit defending your shitty writing, Joss.
>>
>>64716370

It's just a shitty joke.

"I'm bringing the party to you"

"LOL THAT'S NOT A PARTY THAT'S A GIANT ALIEN SPACE SHIP DRAGON YOU SILLY MANWHORE"
>>
>>64716881
That's not how she said it at all.
>>
>>64711524
>>64711827
I dunno. The "Tony Stark can't fucking handle Gamora" bit from teh comics on the screen would be funny. Just have him break up with pepper again.
>>
>>64716736
the delivery wasn't even snarky. it was Joss just going "I'm gonna add a little humor, and it'll be with the chick." which isn't unnatural for him to do
>>
>>64716895
Yeah, that way would actually have been funny.
>>
>>64716789

Black Widow can be funny. She was funny in Winter Soldier.

Joss Whedon can't write funny women. He has too much reservation for that.
>>
>>64716942
It was a funny throw away line. It may not have been needed but it was funny. I guess what I don't understand is why it keeps getting brought up at all.
>>
>>64711524
Don't worry.

GoTG2 will likely also be untouched by Earth Antics.

It's going to be Avengers 3 when they're dragged to Earth to fight Thanos where shit will get bad.

Fuck, I retroactively like Avengers less now for calling dibs on Thanos.
>>
>>64716976

I just found it lame and "typical" of Whedon. It certainly didn't ruin my life, but it just goes to show how he wrote every character the same at his convenience.
>>
>>64716783
just absolutely terrible of him to write a dry humorous line for deadly serious character that can enjoy nothing
>>
>>64716822
>get this hothead out of here
>>
>>64716976
Because /co/ tends to blow tiny things out of proportion when it involves muh characters. It was funny. Sure, Widow doesn't usually do that sort of humor, but she was clearly just responding to what Tony said on a humorous manner. It was just a little joke.. you know, like people do when they're in dire situations?
Also because /co/ has a serious hateboner for Whedon, even they've liked, or haven't watched, everything he's ever done.
