This was a disappointment.
Drago had no character. He was just some random evil person.
Killing Stoick wasn't necessary either. They;d killed the wildebeast, stolen their dragons and were about to enslave Berk. What extra motivation did killing Stoick add?
>What extra motivation did killing Stoick add?
HTTYD series is about a boys growth into manhood.
His father's death is there to serve as a catalyst, a final push into adulthood.
The series is pretty clearly an extended coming of age arc, one which looks like it will go further than the usual ones (which tend to stop the moment the character accepts adulthood, rarely exploring what comes after)
It forced him to grow up, to take charge and become a leader, rather than just a boy and his dragon. Also the feels anon, the feels.
>both films have ended with him dealing with a burden, a new lease of life and a loss
>mfw I realise what the loss of number 3 will be
>Astrid will comfort-fuck him after all 3
HTTYD 2 should have been two movies. Everything happened too quickley and without enough motivation and we were left woth a jumbled mess. It was a mess that was fun to watch and was one of the best sequels Dreamworks has ever done but a still a mess regardless
I know too much biology not to sperg out about the dragon's ecosystem
Also fridging Stoick wasn't necessary, and momma mononoke was a little out of left field. And how did the bad guy tame the alpha? But eh, it was ok
>Drago had no character. He was just some random evil person.
He did have a character, but it needed greater elucidation. He was basically the anti-Hiccup. He was mauled horribly by a dragon and suffered great loss (in the form of his family) at their hands. The world-view that he developed as a result was somewhat like an extreme fascist Machiavellian-Realpolitik, contrasted with Hiccup's straightforward Idealism. Whereas Hiccup tried to befriend the dragons and win their trust, Drago literally employed some fucking Triumph of the Will shit to just completely dominate them and turn them into subservient slaves. This is where I thought the contrast between how Hiccup trained Toothless (with an outstretched hand of cooperation) and how Drago dominated his dragons (by stepping on their heads) was clever. Hiccup lost his leg and has to reach out to connect with the dragons, whereas Drago lost his arm and thus his means of making that connection.
>and what method of controling dragons would a blind guy have?
>coming this summer
>the prequel to the hit trilogy How to train your Dragon
>directed by George Lucas
I got the impression the movie went through some kind of severe script rewrite that was never fully completed. You can really see that with Valka, her dragon is almost a non-entity except for doing cute stuff with Toothless and everything about her design and role in the story screams that she's supposed to be riding the Bewilderbeast instead.
>The smile on Astrid's face
>Dragons playing in the background
>those shots of the Bewliderbeast breaching
At the end of their whole bonding experience together, Hiccup was totally willing to fuck off and join Valka on her dragon rescuing journeys, leaving Berk and the duties of the chief behind.
Stoick's death forces Hiccup to accept his responsibilities as chief.
Probably for the best, I think she'd have a better grasp of how to run things, but I do see Hiccup growing into the chief role and becoming just as good as Stoick. It'll just take him some time to get used to not slacking off.
I know it's a tiny picture, but different Hiccup outfit confirmed for Dawn of the Dragon Racers
I really hope Valka doesn't take a side role in the next movie, she had some great moments right up until she tried to fight Drago and then she disappeared for the rest of the movie.
Valka is pretty badass indeed.
>tfw still stuck to making webms from youtube clips
I know Drago gets ripped on occasionally for his motivation being basically just power, but when you think about it a base desire like that has been the motivation of many leaders throughout history. What compelled Alexander the Great to never lose a single battle and conquer Greece, Persia, Egypt, all the way to India? Power. He believed he was the son of Zeus. He wanted the power to reflect that. Why did Napoleon conquer much of Europe? Power. Why did the Roman Empire conquer the known world? Power! If those people were instead fictional characters in a story, would people criticize them for their seemingly simple motivation? Probably. But the fact is in life our reasons for doing things are very often simple and related to our base desires, we're instinctual like that. So I think villain motivations tied to those base desires, such as power, are not actually bad but are some of the best. Not every villain has to be on some misguided quest or actually be a good guy, that's in some ways sort of a crutch. A villain motivated by a base desire like power is perfectly valid and indeed more common. And if I wanna go full 2deep4u mode, I can say that after Drago saw his village burned by dragons and lost his arm, after feeling completely helpless and powerless, he became obsessed with control and power, he never wanted to feel that helpless again, so the way to do that was to control everything, especially the dragons. To conclude,
>AUGHHHH AGHHHHH AUGHHHH
>have to wait 3 months for the second movie
That quote is true but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be lighter, it's pretty light as it is
Season 3 will be called Dragon Masters and the stuff about Hiccup's inventions and him and Astrid is all we really know about it so far.
I still haven't seen the first two seasons myself. I want to, but end up getting distracted by other things (video games, mostly). I might just wait until it's a bit closer until HTTYD 2 is out, to make the wait a bit easier.
That movie was awesome.
I liked that they threw a dude that can't be reasoned with Hiccup's way.
Still feeling hurt over Stoick. The universe can't stand Hiccup being 100% happy.
Strongest OTP in animated movies ever.
Luckly Hiccup takes a lot after Stoick too, even if he doesn't realize.
Came across these and thought you all might like them
Nah, Hiccup wanted her to come back to Berk.
Thing is, they both reach for freedom and boundaries to explore, and without Stoick's or Astrid's influence, Hiccup would totally end up becoming Valka 2.0.
Which is cool, but not really where I want the story to go.
He can do it, it's in his power. Astrid can certainly lend a hand.
But while Hiccup believes he can't measure up to his dad, he has always had that drive to help others that Stoick always speaks about.
He already does a great job running things. It's what he has been doing since HTTYD, and the academy reinforced that. Hiccup is just blind to his strengths (Astrid needs to poke him to remind him).
I wouldn't put much weight on that cover.
I love Dreamworks work with the franchise, but their covers are lazy as shit.
The Boneknapper cover had HORRIBLE photoshop.
That's the new special.
Nobody knows what Masters will or not have other than Hiccup inventing shit and more Hiccstrid.
Last picture of the set.
In other news, HTTYD2 has officially broken past 500.
>have pretty much given up entirely on Skyrim mods after spending hours on it
>going to calm down by eating ice cream and watching the movie
Feels good and absolutely fucking horrible man.
Step right up, taking all bets for what gets the ball rolling or what gets them to break the 2 season very close friendship plateau
Current favourite is Toothless being the eternal wingman, but there's still all to play for!
That will probably be the precursor.
Naturally full of Draconic and Stoick related cockblocking.
Something like the scene where he's casually sharpening his axe in the background, being as deliberately akward as possible
So it appears HTTYD can be split up into three acts, Act I is about 33 minutes from the beginning to the end of Forbidden Friendship. Act II is about 27 minutes, from there to after they get back from the nest the first time. Act III is about 29 minutes and is from there to the end. Which act was your favorite? Also vote for favorite scene http://strawpoll.me/2300474
No. Stoick is pretty great. All the main characters are when they get their screentime. Fishlegs and the twins are good in the series. Snotlout is more of a jerk but they also go into why he acts like he does. I think Spitelout is a lot like Stoick was in the first movie, actually. He knows what he wants and expects from his son and won't accept otherwise.
I really like the fact that Stoick is never presented as a meatheaded idiot.
Even when he's wrong, he generally acts with Berk's best interests at heart, and clearly thinks about problems intensely.
That the tv series reinforced this aspect of his character makes me like it that much more
>Dragon riding mod
>Hiccup's armour and flaming sword mod
>This playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh_doTIrFRo
Welp I've just figured out what I'm going to be trying to do this week.
The Social Network actually had a decent soundtrack. It wasn't a patch on HTTYD, but I think that had more to do with the fact that the academy doesn't bother watching animated films so it just won by default.
Every fucking time
>mod it so the main quest is bonding with toothless
>rather than being fucked about by the Blades/greybeards, you hunt down Alduin yourself
>Paarthurnax is so impressed by your lack of murderhoboing, and by convincing one of his brothers to turn away from the usual path of dragons, he helps you
They really need to step it up when it comes to the trailer.
Most of them for number 1 were wildly misleading (to it's detriment, the real movie premise was far better than what the trailers implied) and number 2's were a giant spoiler bomb
>tfw never saw trailers for either movie before watching it
I want to do the same for 3 if the trailers are just as bad but not sure I'll be able to resist
No, the movie has that mystic sway over me and many other people as well
No, they're just well written enough to grab people without resorting to blatant ship bait.
The writers being smart enough to use restraint, and instead write two people who are clearly secure in their relationship was a very smart move
The trailers got me hype for both movies, misleading or spoiler-y as they were.
I remember attempting to build hype among /co/mrades when the trailers for the first came out, because I could tell there was more to the story than it suggested.
/co/ expected nothing but popculture jokefest from Hiccup and Astrid.
Yes, my body was not prepared for the feels that the 2nd movie would give me. I was just holding out my tears
on Stoick's deathjust because it's embarrassing to see an old guy cry.
>instead write two people who are clearly secure in their relationship was a very smart move
Agreeing on this 100%. I like how their interactions were written. It felt so natural. Also, that last kiss was just the cherry on top.
How can people hate Hiccup and Astrid? Not unless they're some teenage fangirls from tumblr, then I can understand
She probably felt sorry for him cause she saw that he was trying. She also probably thought he was cute even if he was weak, I mean as guy to guy I can acknowledge he's handsome
A shitload of people hate Astridin the first movie because they take her at face value and fail to see beyond that.
And a lot of people have complained how they have rob her of her traits in the specials/sequel.
Idiots the lot of 'em.
I do want to see them as kids, around the age they were originally intended to have.
I suppose that they didn't have problems with him until he was of an age where he could pull hia wheight around.
The other kids soured on him quickly, Astrid distanced herself from him (the others too probably).
>two years until the second movie comes out
>your entire life can change
>you could die
>but HTTYD 3 will still be there for you
>there are some anons who won't live to see it
>She's the only one which doesn't mock him, or show contempt for his early fuck ups
I don't think it's because she likes him or feels sorry for him, I think it's because (like Stoick or Gobber) she's known Hiccup long enough that she just accepts that he's a fuck-up and that as irritating as it may be it's just what he is.
You don't show contempt towards the wind for messing up your hair, or the cold for making you shiver - you simply tolerate the fact that they are there. You don't curse the storm - you just sigh and clean up the mess it's made.
>Saw the HTTYD2 on the biggest screen in London.
>Tfw based IMAX experience.
It was always pretty obvious to me that much of her tough girl persona was something she put on because she was afraid that people wouldn't look past the pretty face.
Her behavior in 2 felt natural, she'd outgrown that teenage need to prove herself.
I like Astrid in gift of the night fury.
It was nice to see her in a non serious environment, and it was nice to see she's just as capable of catastrophic fuck ups as the rest of them
I gotta say, I kept expecting her to turn heel, or that she at least would have some kind of radical ideal that would chafe with Hiccup's. She and Hiccup were getting along so well the whole time I was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Same here. I loved that it added another dimension to her.
Yet how many times people complain of how out of character she is, how they girlyfied her or just made her bland to fit the role of girlfriend.
People either hate her because she's got an agressive side or because she has a loving one.
I hate people that think a character not progressing/staying one note means that they're out of character.
She just got more emotionally mature so she doesn't need to prove shit to anyone, she didn't lose her backbone.
People mistakenly believe that it was the flight thst changed her opinion of hiccup. But while it did its part, Astrid trully gained a new perspective on him with that "Yes". Astrid is the first person to see that side of Hiccup in-universe.
And yet she's a gold digging whore, and Hiccup would be much better off with Ruff.
>And yet she's a gold digging whore, and Hiccup would be much better off with Ruff.
Them's fightan' words
I-It won't be the same
>tfw you will never have a dragon as your best friend
>tfw it will never be toothless
I've read When In Rome and thought it was bretty gud as far as fanfic goes, anyone got any other suggestions?
>you will never be there with them
>tfw you will never have a mod for skyrim which replaces the main menu theme with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh_doTIrFRo
The release date was alright in my opinion.
It was just no one was expecting 22 Jump Street to be that fucking good.
It could have potentially done far better on July 4th though since that weekend was empty.
There's a difference between HTTYD 1 and 2.
HTTYD2 isn't a sleeper hit everyone expected it to do better.
It's done well but below expectations solely due to Murica not watching it.
No one thought HTTYD was gonna do well.
>the last film is about the Dragons going away
>we will never see babby night furies growing up with Hiccup's children
Did it bug anyone else that Drag had a Bewilderbeast too? For one thing, it felt too pat. It stretched my disbelief a bit more than it should. For another, I was really looking forward to some sort of aquatic dragon duking it out on the shore with the Alpha- I think two radically different designs and builds fighting would have been more engaging to watch.
Look at this majestic fucker.
Have some cute Hiccup with a baby
Do you want some feels to go along with that baby?
>tfw I've seen them so much that merely posting a single picture makes it all play in my head
I really like the newer dragons especially and I can't wait to see they come up with in the third film.
Cloudjumper's design is the best in my opinion.
After reading a few of the books, Drago has the most faithful adaptation of a dragon trainer's methods.
It's basically just yell and scream and sometimes sock it in the nose until it does what you want.
I definitely recall this being the case.
Dragons were treacherous little bastards in the books, and Hiccup was originally unique for not needing to be an asshole in order to win Toothless over
>banepost here for weeks on
>just heard of this on /tv/
>got here as fast as my Browsard would take me
>flew right over me and is now crashed
I should plan my things ahead
>tfw I respect a series too much to look for rule 34 of it
It is a curious feeling
I was like you once, young and innocent. But then I let curiosity get the better of me. And now I can never go back.
Yeah. Ruffnut in particular, but Tuff and 'Legs need more focus too.
Hell, I still want more Astrid episodes. We need to meet her parents.
That doesnt describe Free Scauldy at all she had plenty lines independent of Tuff there.
But yeah, its a shame that the moat she has are reactions to her brother or some other and Tuff is the one the camera focus more on.
So, which one you guys prefer to come out in the end? Rufflegs or Rufflout?
Both of them are drop dead gorgeous. Sorry you have shit taste.
Were there any complaints about the portrayal of the dragons across the films and television series? Specifically, were there complaints about them not being magical, powerful, intelligent, and/or evil, or about not all of them sticking to the four-legs-two-wings configuration of "classic" dragons?
There have been complains about their cartoony looks derived from Nico Marlet's style. And complains about how much Toothless looks like Stitch.
Also, every once in a while someone will complain they are too dog-like.
People liked Toothless more like a large cat and complained that they gave him dog manerisms on the sequel.
Nevermind that he behaves like both and the same was true im the first.
he had more cat-like mannerisms in the first one, like when hiccup is about to feed him the fish you mentioned, toothless is up on a rock in the same position that cats use when stalking prey
Toothless has cat, dog, horse and even panther manerisms. Claiming that he was more like x in either movie is futile.
Hell, Toothless playing with the amber sparks aboard Eret's ship was balantly cat like.
currently confirmed to be limited to a trilogy as far as the movies go, with 2 more seasons of the tv series in the works.
the 2 seasons look like they're going to bridge 1 and 2, and I'd kind of doubt that they'd make another one to bridge 2-3, given that the transition from youth to adult is more compelling that adult to slightly older adult.
Yeah, from the making of video of number 1, it looked like Dean and Sanders were both well aware that they might fall prey to a Shrekoning, and made damn sure that they'd be unable to turn it into a cash zombie.
IIRC, the original contract said that Dean got a trilogy, and given he's said it coincides with the book ending, it looks like it'll all be ogre by the end of the 3rd movie.
>Unless they split the 3rd movie into two parts
Why? I'd be ok with it. Most people complain about 2 being too rushed, so having the third one take all the time it needs to set up a good plot and give the series a good send off is fine by me.
I think it might have been nicer if they retained a bit more of the cat mannerisms than the dog's even though Toothless showed both in both movies, I can understand how being with humans for 5 years would bring out the dog though. Mainly just the panting and tail wagging.
Well if they do have
the dragons disappearthen they'd need 2 parts for sure.
>mfw we see the deleted scenes, get high quality webms and the special in November
>Not ignoring all obvious chemistry and compatibility with Astrid and Hiccup and just doing the Toothcup ship because reasons.
>being one of them
>not listening to the Heiliger Dankgesang while imagining Hiccup and Astrid together
Does no one has Ruff fanart?
>it doesn't wash out
I seriously hope you guys don't do this.
Was seeing through my plan part of your plan?
It us a land filled with madmen and women, where hedgehog like monstrosities roam free and interact with strange beings, often mutant aberrations that wield oddly fragile straight swords.
Legends tell of great men who steel themselves against the madness, and find great gems amongst the rubble. It is rumoured all sorts of Dragons fry free in the deep regions.
Do you have the courage to find out, anon? Dare you enter their magical realm?
How else was toothless going to go super saiyan with out the power of loss.
The first movie showed how smart Hiccup was and what a good leader he could be. By knowing and using the strengths of his friends. Using a strategy to defeat Red Death.
This movie had him rushing in like an idiot and winning with the power of friendship bullshit.
It died. Poor dragon.
Nah, properly-statted dragons are for humiliating the murderhobos who don't realize that diplomacy is an option when the dragon greets you in common.
Plus there was also that dragon quest a while back where /tg/, as a dragon, fucked a human woman, or at least it was implied.
It's hard to tell since everyone grew, but I think he might have. Hiccup didn't seem as big as he should if Toothless stayed the same.
Found it: avannak's tumblr, post 90142131433
>>>to add to that last anon it'd be funny if Hiccup actually tried to take the kid flying with Toothless instead and then seeing Astrid's reaction
>>Hiccup’s taken to hiding his baby in Toothless’s mouth when they land. Just so Astrid doesn’t see.
I hadn't read that before but while I was showering I was trying to imagine a possible context for it, and this was the exact scenario I got.
maby its to show death happens regardless.
and its over coming a death that allows one to grow.
also Drago was awesome.
dont you fucking go there....im having a good day and i dont need tears.
i understand the dvd release will feature deleted scenes.
essentially Dragon masters (season 3) will be between season 2 and movie 2 and establish the inventions, explorations, ect they come across.
it says it'll premire on netflix so i have no clue if its ONLY netflix or if its gonna be on CN as well.
which ever lets me get a torrent faster.
i thought i would hate HTTYD because i thought "oh look, an Avatar cash in"
then i saw forbidden friendship....
james cameron can suck it, Chris Sanders is my hero.
that seen melted my cold heart.
we're going to need story time
you'll enjoy the show.
speaking of which, anyone else become a fan of TJ Miller for his portrayal of tuffnut in all the filsm and the show?
Mother fucker is hilarious.
not until scientist get off their ass and start gene splicing.
astrid's dragon, stormfly a deadly Nadder.
fast, strong, vicious, exetremely proud and vain, but is sensitive about its appearance, likes playing with other dragons, and likes to show off is colors.
hmmm, they do match up pretty well.
I got some of that bro.
>be seeing cutie 3.14 red head in freshman year.(college)
>she likes animated movies, as do i since we both take art classes.
>i feel in love with HTTYD and chris sanders work in senoir year of highschool after thinking it was going to be the moses story garbage with pop culture references
>been looking forward to the show but it;ll be another year before it airs.
>me and her been on a few dates, made out a couple of times
>taste like cherries...
>we decide to watch HTTYD because...well duh...its great
>on my couch arms around each other
>romantic flight comes on
>we take the chance to make out
>we started fucking by the time hiccup started the match with hookfang
>it was fucking awesome
>lasted on 7 minutes the first round
>went on past the credits and into pixars "brave" because it was quede up on my PC
>finally drained by the time the mother was a bear, 4 fucking orgasm on both end.
>couch was soaking wet but we didnt care
and thats how i lost my virginity
>implying toothstrid isn't the best ship of all time
MAKE IT STOP
Personally, I didn't like the movie as much as the first, but tha wasn't it. It was more the "suddenly Hiccup's mom is alive and is exactly like her son and had tamed a dragon by complete accident and has lived with them twenty years" thing. It just screeched, in my mind. Plus it sorta takes away from the uniqueness of Hiccup in the first film he wasjust being a more succesful Xerox of hismom.
I still think they should have kept the main villain as his mother. Or at the very least played her off against Drago as a secondary antagonist. I just wanted some awesome scenes with her in this armour.
I would have enjoyed her getting a little more screentime to be badass in 2, though. I know the time is always tight in a movie but I always like seeing Astrid and Stormfly doing their thing.
I'd have liked that too.
Though it was gratifying that she wasn't just some lofty bitch overflowing with superiority; seeing her drop her spaghetti over seeing him again, as well as gush over some of the inventions he'd made, dodged the bullet I was very worried would strike home
Oh definitely. I'm imagining her thinking that most of the Vikings are just hindering the dragons' true potentials, and fighting with Hiccup about whether or not dragons should be the dominant species.
He'll become a big dragon
>Dawn of the Planet of the Dragons
>HTTYD is in fact a prequel for Reign of Fire
From a certain point of view
probably not the most practical design.
Then again Valka is a peace loving, dragon fucking, pinko communist hippie that likes to abandon her son to a life of shame and despair. So I guess her even comprehending a concept such as practicality is beyond her feeble mind.
The marketing in the movie was absolutely atrocious.
Showing the mom in fucking trailer was a stupid move beyond reason.
Fuck dreamworks. Yeah, this may be their best movie. But the 3rd installment will fail just like shreak 3. Unless they miraculously pull a 'Toy Story 3' which I highly fucking doubt. dreamworks is lazy as fuck compared to Pixar. They just want their paychecks.
Fuck dreamworks. Half-Assed fucks.
I think Dean will fight to make sure that doesn't happen
b\Because anon it was such shit. I expected a cool movie with post apocalyptic dragon shit, but instead I got massive disappointment.
I even rented the tie in game from blockbuster and it sucked so hard
