>>64549825 Most animation is pretty decent. Some jokes are pretty funny. However I just keep getting that underlying feeling of malice and bitterness like when I watch Family Guy. But that's probably personal.
>what if this nice thing that is suitable for kids... WASN'T suitable for kids?
Comedy genius for 14 year olds.
As an animator he's okay, but he likes to use that cheat you see a lot of popular online animators use, which is basically do a bunch of funny faces and switch between them without really animating them. HDD, like so many others, are just glorified comic artists, not really great animators. A handful of frames in between each WHACKY pose does not a great animator make. Nothing has any actual weight to it.
I'd love to see cartoons from him that weren't just babby's first EDGE because I'm sure if he really wanted to he could make something great instead of something that would amuse his idiot audience. He knows his audience is dumb and likes to mock them, but it always feels like he has exactly the audience he deserves, and maybe he shouldn't be so smug considering he does fart jokes, SWAG jokes, and Mario taking drugs jokes.
>>64550659 Max is him self a bronie. Contrary to the modern simplistic view of the autists whole occupy much of the internet, you can make fun of something without hating it. Hence the term 'make fun'. His playing heel at conventions and online was part of his persona.
>>64550696 That was just the end to the pony.mov series, they weren't all just one-off jokes, all the videos were connected. Along with another comic he did. Which is why JA comes back saying some shit about saving the universe.
He's a giant faggot. Listen to his podcasr with Yotam Israel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZyjRLx8VTw He blocks people on YT His videos aren't very funny, but in the end his fanbase became mainly ponyfags so I guess can't be too mad.
>>64551379 Didn't one of his characters in that try to pitch the idea of an edgy, gritty Mario parody just like the one he just madeand got a bottle smashed over his head for being a stupid, insipid piece of shit?
>>64551091 >Why does anybody ever ask "does /co/ like ____?" Wanna know a secret? The creators make these threads themselves. Even if the answers are negative they're still being talked about, and that's what attention whores like them crave.
Everytime I watch this guy I think "Hey this dude's pretty good!" then halfway through I think "Oh yeah, NOW I remember why I don't care for him." Enjoyable animation but the jokes and writing is always just soooooooo baaaaaaad. He always draws these characters in this whole rock/goth/kornkore/pseudo-punk thing and he just reminds me so much of like...Those obnoxious teenage rocker kids you always saw.
Nothing personnel, but he really needs a team to back him up if he wants to get somewhere.
>>64550136 This this and this. His whole humor is based on the old parody thing of making cute and innocent things sexual and violent. His videos just feel like him praciticing animation but without anything really of value he wants to animate.
>>64549967 Recently, Jon made a tweet saying that the Playstation Now, a service for renting PS games, was "retarded". A fan asked him to not say that word, and Jon replied "Oh sorry, I forgot you were retarded. My bad."
This errupted into a storm of hate being thrown at Jon, and HotdiggedyDemon, ever the champion of internet freeze peach, defended him. (I heard, at least. I never saw his tweets)
You may remember HDD from the Skyler Page fiasco in which he said "Skyler, if I've told you once, I've told you a million times, if you grope women, DON'T GET CAUGHT."
further poop: http://www.outragedatabase.com/2014/08/interview-with-jontron/
>>64552433 He should've kept his snarky comments with "I wish Rebecca Sugar molested a chick so they'd cancel Steven Universe". But then the man doesn't know any humor except for "look at me I'm being offensive, grant me attention!" so.
>>64552815 Gamegrumps gave us a hint at how Jontron really is behind the scenes, especially during a lot of the Sonic '06 videos. Casual racism and homophobia, and the like. It never really seemed "malicious", though, and you could always argue he was never serious, and threw that stuff out for the sole purpose of getting a rise out of people. (not exactly high comedy in my opinion but) then there's also that tweet about Hitler's K/D ratio.
This incident really let us see him, though. Jon, while mostly funny, is incredibly egotistical, and flies off the handle at any sort of criticism.
>>64553227 Get what? That character was plain stupid and an obvious self insert.
'Videogames are stupid and I'm a street thug! my whole character is about it!... but in the end I'm smart and know which pistol used Hitler to kill himself and I don't mind to get shot because I'm more than the joke everyone thinks I am:"
Fuuuck it man. But well, maybe is too deep for me.
Followup question: why is this 80s cop movie police chief making video game jokes on the internet?
I mean, that's a funny visual for a gag, an 80s cop movie police chief being a boss in any other job, but that's definitely not a joke that works when you try to make the series all dramatic and emotional.
>>64549825 I set up a thread not too long ago explaining my distaste for anything by Max and other stupid baby's first edge animators who relay on gore, drugs, and sexy thumbnails, as well as emphasized cussing and grossout humor that crosses the line and jumps between it like a schizophrenic beaner. If it isn't trying to be openly offensive, it won't be funny seems to be a rule for cocksucking fags like Max. Web animators usually suck, and Max is king of the dicks in this area. If I ever meet him IRL, I will knock his fucking teeth out for being such a goddamn prick.
Does anybody have that screenshot from when he bagged on CN creators? The one where he was telling off Skylar Page for that "incident'? And then he took it down. What a pussy. Can't even stand up to execs except for sitting in his corner with a keyboard. Hey Max, if you're gonna stand up to CN in any way, GROW A FUCKING PAIR, you spineless cum-licker
>>64549825 I like his animation, but he REALLY needs to team up with someone who can write something worth animating and actually funny. It could be that I'm too old to laugh at those kinds of jokes. I did enjoy his Zim parody for all its stupidity.
Pretty nice guy but a lot of people have the wrong idea about him, so when he actually does stupid shit, they add it to the pile of sins they have written down for him.Unfortunately his writing fluctuates in quality as much as people's interpretation of him. It's kinda impossible to defend him since most arguments end up with people just unable to see any other point besides their own and then feel justified about even the stuff they're wrong about because of the few shit things he's done/
>>64553854 I went to Everfree Northwest (2012) out of curiousity and I actually met Max BTS after the con; I asked him about inspiration and he basically gave a small rant about people being "unoriginal" and "not as creative" as he is. He was also bagging on other cartoons at the time, and started telling me about how they wish they were as great as he was.
TLDR; he called out CN for having "shit shows" and was telling me how "Pen Ward is a stupid autist" and that "J.G. Quintel sucks" and the like. As I mentioned before, there was also a screenshot not too long ago where Max bagged on Skylar Page (creator of Clarence) for groping females at CN's headquarters where he worked.
He also had the balls to make a snide remark towards Rebecca (Steven Universe) but both were taken down because he was afraid of getting in trouble due to CN's execs.
In the end, I find him to be a spineless prick wiht little talent and a big ego.
>>64554117 I met him at Animate, either 2012 or 2013. He never acted or did anything like that. None of his panels have been like that and I've watched several, met the guy irl too, and used to watch his blog quite a bit. Is this all recent or something because there's been no sign of any of this so far. And wasn't the whole "bagging" on Skyler Page just a joke? It feels like ages ago but I thought it was obviously just meant as a joke that got blown the fuck out of proportion by tumblr. The guy has consistently shown an incredibly low amount of self-esteem.
>>64549825 Eh I think he's hit and miss. I feel bad cause I think Jerry was his best work and he hasn't given himself enough time or distance to make something that great again. I do think some of his parody's are alright, but for the most part they're mediocre. At least the writing, His animation is good. It'd be cool to see him make something original again like Jerry. He seems to work better when he's not all comedy.
>>64554210 >What happens to creators and humility. >Is a requirement to be somewhat "famous" being a dick and not be humble in any way?
A lot of creators create in a desperate bid for attention. It's the screaming cry of "LOVE ME!" from someone that never got enough attention as a child.
THOSE sorts of creators tend to oscillate between desperation and virulent self-loathing and overcompensation, and depending how those two aspects shake out, they either come across as vacillating, backpeddling, pandering hacks (the ones desperate for love and willing to do whatever it takes to be "liked"), or more dickish, asshole behavior which is sort of a combination of their own bitterness fused with trying to project a "I don't care!" sort of persona as a defense mechanism.
There are plenty of creative people who are nice, wonderful people - but those are also the types who tend to be quieter in general, and let their work speak for them. The creators who can't seem to shut up about themselves or their views in online forums, places like Twitter, or at Cons are usually the attention whore type who always seem to be utterly broken people.
>>64554287 The whole "Skylar Page" incident wasn't exactly a joke because it seemed rather insensitive at the time; keep in mind that females in the work place get this dishonorable treatment often, and this was the case of a damaged individual speaking out against him. Skylar is also a person with mental issues, so Max's comment was just adding salt to an open wound. Skylar's life revolved around his job, and getting booted was horrifying for him. I am not trying to demonize Max here, but there are some lines you just can't cross. I mean, how would you feel if someone bagged on you for fucking up something big in you life?
As for his attitude, I met him while walking back to my car, and I asked if he had a moment to answer a few questions; I do see some self-depreciation from Max put into his animation, but the fact that he was bagging on CN seemed a little conceited to me. It's just like that time Uwe Boll called out Michael Bay on being a shit director. Uwe Boll a shit, and Michael Bay a shit, but Michael is doing something right to make his movies successful. I honestly want to know how people who can barely put themselves above ground have the gull to mock someone in a much higher position. It's pathetic, appreciated sometimes, but overall pathetic. What makes me mad about Max concerning his comment at originality is that Max is just like most animators and he doesn't seem to mind being a tryhard for neo-comedy. He uses some of the same material that Egoraptor and Spazkid are well known for using. Things like the "Pony.mov" series are examples of why I don't like Max. The writing is okay, and the animation feels smooth, but it's tries so fucking hard to cut the viewers eyes open with it's edginess and gross out humor. I can't fucking comprehend anything funny about it, because it's too fucking gory and random.
Keep in mind that I love animation, but Max's position at the forefront of le gore and sex comedy isn't winning me over.
>>64554918 So it was a joke, like a lot of his stuff was, you just felt it went too far. Believe me, I don't think he or a lot of people went as far with a negative interpretation as you and other people did. So he removed it but then he gets called a coward or if he apologized he'd get called shit for that too and if it was just a joke it's going to be taken as far, far more than anyone would ever intended. How would I feel if an internet animator tweeted a joke about me during that kind of situation? Wouldn't care. I wouldn't be able to be on 4chan if something like that bothered me. I think a lot of people read way too much into this kind of stuff and since they comprehend what it likely is, comprehend it as something else. That's when people start calling everything edgy or someone egotistical or pathetic despite all evidence. Seriously, the guy doesn't just self deprecate through his animations. His panels are non-stop him whispering criticisms against himself and thinking everything's gone to hell because of him. His blog used to be borderline depressing with the occasional wall of text about how he's unsure of himself.
I honestly can't compare him to Egoraptor or Spazkid either, those people are on such a different level of tryhard, oversexual, excessively violent "humor". I honestly don't see Max writing things for "random" humor either. In the end, I'm just going to have to heavily disagree.
>>64555317 Every twist he put on the characters is supposed to be "LOL Randumb" humor, which is why I hate it. Randumb humor is stale and using it is like beating someone's corpses non-stop for fucking years.
>>64555787 One video full of randumb humor doesn't turn series after series of no randumb humor into randumb humor though. The blood spray from the pinkie pie video isn't really randumb humor either. It's actually more slapstick than anything due to its hyperbolic nature and the fact it's established her body is just a dump.
>>64555236 >The intent and meaning of a statement is worthless, only the topical content and presentation This is what SJW actually believe. It's like you guys WANT to get mad, HAVE to get mad, because if you're not mad about something then you're empty. Why do this to yourself? Why not laugh? Why not be happy? Why?
>>64555866 But it's was way over the fucking line. Private and personal shit that should stay that way. As I said, the humor is fucking atrocious; enough WITH GODDAMN EDGINESS. MY FUCKING EYEBALLS ARE BLEEDING.
>>64555936 >>The intent and meaning of a statement is worthless, only the topical content and presentation >THIS IS WHAT SJW ACTUALLY BELIEVE
This is what they teach you in any fucking intro to lit class in any university. "Content trumps intent" has been the golden rule of critical theory and academic-level literary analysis for a decade, it's not some SJW thing.
>>64556086 No. In fact, the most edge we have here are people with their contrarian attitudes and /b/ desperately trying to cling to the old days. In fact, the new "edgy" are people who make hills out of crumbs, take everything personally on the internet, and have ever changing guidelines on what can and cannot be done, then claiming to be open minded and just when they're line of thinking borders the behavior of an exaggerated puritan bitch.
>>64556098 It's still not the point of the video at all. The guy can come off as a stoner, a retard, apathetic loser. It's not the focus of the video at all, just like how that Mario video didn't actually focus on Mario being a drug-addled rock punk, it focused on him being a miserable asshole who lives with his mother. Honestly, the rock punk drug shit comes off as background noise in some of these videos and not actually worthy of complaining about at all. It just seems to set off flags in people's head so they can instantly have something to complain about.
>>64556065 That doesn't make it a valid stance to take when addressing someone's personal statements on social media. FOR FICTION content trumping intent is fine when applied to the most basic of analytical writing (i.e. first year) but when you get into more involved critical thinking, you basically HAVE to move up to discerning the author's intent via analysis of content (intent>>>>>>>>content). After a while intent trumps content in terms of analysis, why the fuck do you think Shakespeare and Orwell are still bitched about to this day? >What does Shakespeare mean in this stanza? >What does Snowflake represent in relation to the Farm? Intent is ultimately more important even with fiction and ESPECIALLY when applied to actual statements by actual people on social media! Getting offended by something someone said online is basically a 'Look at me I'm an idiot' sign, doubly so when that person is a "comedian" and therefore is prone to making such statements facetiously. It smacks of deliberate blindness to motive in favor of blatant emotional gratification.
tl;dr Taking statements by "comedians" at face value as an excuse to get angry makes you a shitty human being. Also dumb and smelly.
>>64553337 He used the word "retarded", a word that people casually use in real life, it's just on far-left websites like tumblr and Something Awful that anyone would actually give a shit. Does it really bother you? Fuck. But he did handle it badly, he should have just completely ignored the Social Justice Warrior trash instead of giving them a reaction. They're like trolls, they feed off any sort of response, the only winning move is not to play.
>>64557022 Seriously? The guy isn't PC but that's about it. If anything, Arin was the one shrieking like a demon and freaking out over stupid shit. Both of them were equally rude to each other and it wasn't actual rudeness, it was friends just messing with each other because they don't have skins as thin as wet paper and they both find it funny. Damn, how does anyone misinterpret that?
>>64557036 Only if you're a member, because being a member requires you to bitch about the smallest possible shit so technically, shit is happening all the time. It's still the internet's corner for crybabies and pretentious hipsters. Every time they step into the public's eye now, it's just to once again prove they can't stop being smug jackasses.
>>64549930 As much as I enjoy watching Game Grumps, I feel like it's a real cop-out on Arin's part. I mean, he's one of the most well-known Flash animators in the world. He kickstarted the Newgrounds community and, like it or not, he's the face of independent animation.
So his abandonment of the craft feels like a slap in the face. It tells all the young animators out there that they should just quit and do something easier.
SWJs don't use it in a lit sense, though. They use it in a rhetoric sense.
And in a rhetoric sense, it basically translates to "It doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong, the only thing that matters is whether I win the argument." So they'll resort to presentation attacks in cases where they can't attack the actual meaning, because the goal is not to understand what the other person is saying and actually relate to them on an intellectual level, the intent is to discredit the other person's argument by whatever means necessary.
It's not explicitly an SWJ thing - it's actually the most common debate tactic for people on the Internet in general (which is why there's almost zero legitimate intellectual discussion online in public forums) - but it's definitely what you see from most online SWJs.
>>64549825 >Does /co/ like HotDigettyDemon? Max has put a lot of work into trying to learn new things like 3D, but his gagwriting is starting to age poorly.
There were a couple of decent bits in Luigi's Day Out but overall he's leaning too hard on being edgy in a medium that prioritizes funny.
You can't have anvils fall on everyone without desensitizing your audience.
And yet, that thing he did with Jappleack where it turned into MLP as imagined by Grant Morrison actually worked. He stepped outside his comfort zone, quit relying on shock material, and then tied it all together pretty decently.
Followed up with Quentin Tarantino's Dead Nigger Storage, which while technically interesting in terms of 3D/2D fusion, was a cringe piece of shit.
His future is going to depend on his work ethic or how willing he is to work under someone else who calls him out on lazier shit.
>>64563358 >>64563283 I'm making the same point. If you're trying to call Egoraptor a well known Flash animator, you yourself are arguing that he's good – in a niche where presumably there are lower standards (which newgrounds isn't really striving to disabuse)
>>64559780 Load of bullshit? I guess that's because you deserve a bowl of fucking ice-cream for raping a secretary right? So did you enjoy yourself at another's expense? Where do you work? On wall street shaking around a can of loose change? GTFO
>>64551071 I respect all of these things. I love the idea of collaboration but if you strongly feel that you can't collaborate with anyone and have your own set of standards, that is important as an artist to recognize that it is not a pissing contest, but yours and yours alone. Even if it's shit and makes people confused or depressed or just disgusted by the style you use.
>>64553337 Jontron doesn't really delve that far into "dark" humor that much at all. Tumblr SJW's just flew off the handles because he said "retarded", which isn't exactly a very dark or offensive word.
Even though he's said a couple in passing while he was on GG, he's said that he views racist jokes as lazy.
>>64564323 >Makes vacuous claims >gets called on it >WUAH, YOU HORRIBLE MISOGYNIST Even the most liberal studies which take anything to be sexual harassment put the number at 15%, which makes he often be dubious at best.
Less left-leaning ones put it at a whooping 4%. Most people wouldn't even know a woman who was harassed in the workplace out of the whole working population. And that's ignoring the fact that number include both women and men, further making your point be a bunch of self-victimizing stupidy.
>>64564382 That's not how you spell Motorcity. >>64559544 >>64559215 >>64559308 >>64555882 >>64559271 As for this; Yes, I did attend, but it was god awful. Do you think I attended because I like Ponies? I hate those fuckers with a burning-hellish-unbelievable hatred. I only went because I owed someone for their birthday. I almost got cancer at that waste dump. Meeting Max was something I did out of curiousity, and I fucking regret even that much. Just so we're clear, I hate Adventure Time, Regular Show, and all that other shitastic garbage CN bothers to label as a cartoon. IT's insulting enough to even call that anus puke they put on their channel a cartoon(s). I just took it as personal offense because Max is worse than anything adultswim could put up; Choosing between ponies, Max, and CN is like choosing a torture for me; rip your fucking nutsack off and pour a can of salt on your wound, drink a year's supply of semen and eat a year's supply of shit, or set yourself on fire after getting anal rape, and fuck your ass with a loaded-shotgun.
>>64564576 This happens a lot more than you'd think; and it's not just workplaces. Some of my dearest friends are victims of shit like this. Besides, %4 of what exactly? Ameica has 318 million people. 4% is still around 13 million. That's a lot of people afflicted still, and we can't ignore a minority even if we hated them. Get your head out of your ass and go to bed. Your mother must hate having to wake you up for school.
>>64555759 >2edge4me list Wow. Why is AgentXPQ even there? You might as well say zero punctuation is an animated series.
Good tier should be moved to god, god should go to shit (other than harry, who can stay), and a few others should move up. Singling out ego and ross is stupid two. Those fucking guys helped creat the whole web animation scene. Move them up.
>>64568770 >>64568953 Jon said himself he didn't like his work on Game Grumps. I also find it kind of weird that since he's left, they haven't so much as even mentioned him in a single video, not in passing, not offhandedly, not even in conversations directly relevant to him being on the show.
I think he may have wanted to distance himself from game grumps, and requested that they don't talk about him on it himself, or they're just mad about him leaving and don't wanna bring it up.
>>64552815 I met him before at a con and he seemed like a decent down to earth person, keeping his cool even though he was literally being mobbed by people. I totally understand his statement though, people need to be less sensitive sometimes.
>>64553337 I seem his as more of just a normal guy. I don't expect any internet celebrity to be a saint. We all crack jokes, especially when he's working on improv. For fucks sakes, we're posting on 4chan.
>aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit! aw shit!
He needs variety in his writing. I mean, look at the Northern Incident, why can't he make more things like that? It's always this "wacky edgy subverted kid show or video game" thing everyone is been riding on for years now.
