Comedy genius for 14 year olds.

As an animator he's okay, but he likes to use that cheat you see a lot of popular online animators use, which is basically do a bunch of funny faces and switch between them without really animating them. HDD, like so many others, are just glorified comic artists, not really great animators. A handful of frames in between each WHACKY pose does not a great animator make. Nothing has any actual weight to it.

I'd love to see cartoons from him that weren't just babby's first EDGE because I'm sure if he really wanted to he could make something great instead of something that would amuse his idiot audience. He knows his audience is dumb and likes to mock them, but it always feels like he has exactly the audience he deserves, and maybe he shouldn't be so smug considering he does fart jokes, SWAG jokes, and Mario taking drugs jokes.

He can definitely animate, but I would prefer he have someone else write his material. His particular brand of comedy doesn't really appeal to me.

I used to love HDD on Newgrounds when I was growing up. Stuff like Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Joan and Mark, and just his style of drawing were a big inspiration in my own creative work.

After the .mov series though, when I started seeing more of him behind the scenes, it gets real hard to defend his dick attitude as just "his stage persona. He's a nice guy, really."

There are still some bits I like, but in general, I agree that it's just shock for the sake of shock.

Every time you watch his videos you get this sort of "good for him" feeling. Like they can be very well animated but still not funny at all, almost like it's some art training thing.

Gamegrumps gave us a hint at how Jontron really is behind the scenes, especially during a lot of the Sonic '06 videos. Casual racism and homophobia, and the like. It never really seemed "malicious", though, and you could always argue he was never serious, and threw that stuff out for the sole purpose of getting a rise out of people. I went to Everfree Northwest (2012) out of curiousity and I actually met Max BTS after the con; I asked him about inspiration and he basically gave a small rant about people being "unoriginal" and "not as creative" as he is. He was also bagging on other cartoons at the time, and started telling me about how they wish they were as great as he was.

TLDR; he called out CN for having "shit shows" and was telling me how "Pen Ward is a stupid autist" and that "J.G. Quintel sucks" and the like.
As I mentioned before, there was also a screenshot not too long ago where Max bagged on Skylar Page (creator of Clarence) for groping females at CN's headquarters where he worked.

I met him at Animate, either 2012 or 2013. He never acted or did anything like that. None of his panels have been like that and I've watched several, met the guy irl too, and used to watch his blog quite a bit. Eh I think he's hit and miss. I feel bad cause I think Jerry was his best work and he hasn't given himself enough time or distance to make something that great again. A lot of creators create in a desperate bid for attention. It's the screaming cry of "LOVE ME!" from someone that never got enough attention as a child.

THOSE sorts of creators tend to oscillate between desperation and virulent self-loathing and overcompensation, and depending how those two aspects shake out, they either come across as vacillating, backpeddling, pandering hacks (the ones desperate for love and willing to do whatever it takes to be "liked"), or more dickish, asshole behavior which is sort of a combination of their own bitterness fused with trying to project a "I don't care!" sort of persona as a defense mechanism.

There are plenty of creative people who are nice, wonderful people - but those are also the types who tend to be quieter in general, and let their work speak for them. The creators who can't seem to shut up about themselves or their views in online forums, places like Twitter, or at Cons are usually the attention whore type who always seem to be utterly broken people.

The whole "Skylar Page" incident wasn't exactly a joke because it seemed rather insensitive at the time; keep in mind that females in the work place get this dishonorable treatment often, and this was the case of a damaged individual speaking out against him. Skylar is also a person with mental issues, so Max's comment was just adding salt to an open wound. Skylar's life revolved around his job, and getting booted was horrifying for him. I am not trying to demonize Max here, but there are some lines you just can't cross. I mean, how would you feel if someone bagged on you for fucking up something big in you life?

As for his attitude, I met him while walking back to my car, and I asked if he had a moment to answer a few questions; I do see some self-depreciation from Max put into his animation, but the fact that he was bagging on CN seemed a little conceited to me. It's just like that time Uwe Boll called out Michael Bay on being a shit director. Uwe Boll a shit, and Michael Bay a shit, but Michael is doing something right to make his movies successful. I honestly want to know how people who can barely put themselves above ground have the gull to mock someone in a much higher position. It's pathetic, appreciated sometimes, but overall pathetic. What makes me mad about Max concerning his comment at originality is that Max is just like most animators and he doesn't seem to mind being a tryhard for neo-comedy. He uses some of the same material that Egoraptor and Spazkid are well known for using.
Things like the "Pony.mov" series are examples of why I don't like Max. The writing is okay, and the animation feels smooth, but it's tries so fucking hard to cut the viewers eyes open with it's edginess and gross out humor. I can't fucking comprehend anything funny about it, because it's too fucking gory and random.

Keep in mind that I love animation, but Max's position at the forefront of le gore and sex comedy isn't winning me over.

So it was a joke, like a lot of his stuff was, you just felt it went too far. Believe me, I don't think he or a lot of people went as far with a negative interpretation as you and other people did. So he removed it but then he gets called a coward or if he apologized he'd get called shit for that too and if it was just a joke it's going to be taken as far, far more than anyone would ever intended. And yet, that thing he did with Jappleack where it turned into MLP as imagined by Grant Morrison actually worked. He stepped outside his comfort zone, quit relying on shock material, and then tied it all together pretty decently.
