Is this show overrated?
No, if anything it's underrated
>comfy cute show with some genuine moments
>consistently low ratings
>didnt have enough people interested for consistent AV club coverage.
At least there's 100 episodes still coming
the hateboner stems from /v/ anons who try to make every cartoon, comic, whatever made by a female into some sort of tumbr-hate festival.
it started off as ironic trolling but now its attracted actual idiots who believe this who have never actually watched the show. you can tell exactly who they are because they can't say anything beyond a series of buzzwords or funny leddit-tier swearword salads.
This. I totally respect arguments against the show that have valid points and well thought out criticism. But more often than not it's just someone yelling tumblr or calling it shit. It gets old as hell.
My issue with SU is that it desperately wants to be a classic magical girl show, but holds itself back with no major antagonists and most of the conflict being slice of life.
If the show was just about the Gems fighting evil, without Steven, it would be much better.
I have a feeling that that's exactly what Sugar wanted too, but the execs wouldn't greenlight the show without a male lead.
Steven was a part of it from the show's conception, he's based off of Sugar's brother. I think Steven holds them together, and the show would be kind of boring without him. Watching the gems be completely competent fighting monsters without conflict in my opinion isn't as exciting without some peril. I wonder how the show would be with Rose instead.
>Its just there with no real arc since its episodic. Its building up to absolutely fuck-all when the story is centered around a fatkid with "potential".
there's a million other cartoons that don't have arcs, go complain somewhere else.
Nah dude it's underrated.
Every thread about it gets overrun by dudes who respond to anyone complimenting the show with "Sugar pls go".
Someone will probably do it to this post too, even with this spoiler written in, because nothing gets people to do something more than implying that they shouldn't do it.
>>My issue with SU is that it desperately wants to be a classic magical girl show, but holds itself back with no major antagonists and most of the conflict being slice of life.
That doesn't "hold it back", that just makes it different.
I like the show a lot, but I can see that it isn't for everyone.
Just watch something else.
It's already interesting, it's just not interesting to you.
It's a show about world building and interpersonal development. Things aren't validated exclusively by how epic your external conflict is.
I think it's often pretty and the music is top notch.
The only real episode I thought was great was the second one with Steven's dad though. Most of the times you feel you should be enjoying the show but it's not really fun or that much entertaining.
-the characters aren't interesting
-the gems are useless (except steven)
-the gems are actually obnoxious assholes
-the music sucks (except 'Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart')
+the only good thing is Lars
>Only song he likes is LMDVIYH
I think it's under rated. If I had to pick a cartoon on the come up it would be SU as hard as shitposter want to keep it down.
>Not Lars and Sadie in tandem
Fuck way off, husbandotrash.
Not really. Every episode has action and adventures. The gems have all gotten time to shine and are far from useless but they hard hilarious ineffectual most episodes. Lars is a shit. The music is fantastic. The only gem whos obnoxious is HAMythest. The characters aren't interesting is more of a subjective thing.
Nobody is forcing you to read these threads.
I know that might seem like a standard copout response to criticism, but it's true.
If you don't like the show, just ignore Steven Universe threads
I know but sometimes you have to make some points you know?
>In fact the monster might not even be there if not for the crystal vault they live in.
I hope you don't get too caught up in that idea, seeing as it's pure speculation. Everything in the show suggests that the Gems are acting more like a clean-up crew. They're not just fighting monsters who happen to attack Beach City, they're going to long abandoned temples and structures that happen to be dangerous.
Is the reason Pearl coddles Steven so much because she's gay and will never have a kid of her own?
my god ed would the the perfect match for amethyst
She "loved" Rose just like you (Assuming you have them) love your closest friends. She doesn't like Greg because she sees him as a bad influence on Steven which is wrong but parents do that a lot. Assume the worse.
You know for some reason weed ruins most cartoons for me, almost like im too hyper-aware of each frame to appreciate it, itll just look choppy and cheap to me unless it's perfect disney-tier animation
I think so, but I was severely disappointed.
I expected cool adventures with an awkward kid growing into a helpful warrior that saves the universe. What I got was three women with special abilities that have to constantly babysit a clown as he fucks shit up for being an idiot and not listening. He's pretty goddamn obnoxious.
how can Greg be deadbeat when the gems keep steven away from him?
They don't hate him, they just don't see much in him. Like the time they didn't even think he had the light cannon and Amethyst just straight-up called him a mess. Anyone who says they hate him probably have a headcannon that they blame him for Rose's death.
If he really wanted his son with him he wouldn't have let them take him. They were his mother's friends, but he's Steven's dad and that counts for a lot more, gem power or not. We haven't seen the transition from Steven living at home to living with the gems yet though. It seems like something that should be addressed. Like, did they just show up one day and take him away? Or did they take him at birth and Greg was ok with it?
I think the gems and humans are more segregated in the world than what you'd imagine. Steven's dad probably accepted that eventually he'll have to become one of the gems and thought it was for the better.
Yes. /co/ wouldn't shut up about it when it first started, so I checked it out. It's not as good as everyone said it is.
That doesn't make it shit, though. It's got a great subtelty to its worldbuilding and manages to pull off neat, expansive story's in a fairy limited time frame. It's just not the bestest and greatest cartoon ever of all times and anon like a lot of people were saying.
>It's just not the bestest and greatest cartoon ever of all times and anon like a lot of people were saying.
I don't remember a lot of people saying that. Only like two or three were like "best CN cartoon in years". It's not like it was Rick and Morty-tier hype
The show has no laugh out loud moments at all, the fight scenes aren't very interesting, but it looks real nice and cosy.
It would probably benefit from either having a story arc or having 22 minute episodes, but because it's started off with low ratings from the off I don't think it'll ever get the latter. The fact that it's so formulated also makes it predictable, which can work in an outright humor show like P&F or RS, but with something that takes itself serious like this it doesn't work.
I have a feeling that Rebecca had her own idea for a show and Cartoon Network just turned it into Adventure Time 2 to try and guarantee success. What they don't realise is that Adventure Time was successful because it was new and different.
I'd probably give it a 5 or 6 out of ten, because it's just not interesting enough to warrant me giving it any more. I wouldn't turn the tv off if it came on, but I'd definitely check the other channels to see if something more interesting was on.
Every time someone compares SU to AT I take a minute to roll my eyes all the way around the inside of my skull.
The only similarities there are what you find in Sugar's influence with the ukelele playing and down-to-earth character development and junk. All the stuff that disappeared from AT the moment she left.
>Every time someone compares SU to AT I take a minute to roll my eyes all the way around the inside of my skull.
Pretty much this. I mean not even the colors are the same. SU's colors are paler and more relaxed while AT is more colorful. You can't even squint your fucking eyes and say they're the same.
First Seasons of Shows are more often than not one of the best. AT, RS, Spongebob, Dexter etc. Creators are often told to put in there best ideas first so as to hook the viewer from the off. Also as a series gets more seasons it becomes less creator-driven, which means that from season 2 onwords Rebecca Sugar will have less and less involvement in the show. She's gotta stamp her style on is ASAP otherwise it will have no hook.
The thing is, I can't even tell what genre it's trying to be, and even if it isn't a comedy then it doesn't mean that the jokes are allowed to fall flat. That's just lazy and inexperienced writing.
Why? It's on the same channel as AT and RS, Rebecca used to work on AT, it's a rival show to AT and RS, and some of the episodes are so AT like that if Steven dressed up as a yellow dog I would probably think it was AT
They're magic, of course they're full of themselves. They're doing the job they're supposed to do. They don't really care about the citizens liking them, as long as they're safe.
That shows contrast with Steven. He's caring about the people of Beach City and also half human, so part of the plot involves him trying to get the gems to care at least a little about the public's opinion of them.
>not having good storys, characters, action and environment right from the start
shit nigga what are you doing?
That's not the way to keep the viewer interested
>Why? It's on the same channel as AT and RS,
>Rebecca used to work on AT
> it's a rival show to AT and RS
It's a companion show, if anything. They're all Cartoon Network, there's no competing here. How does that even make sense? What would they compete over? Time slots?
>and some of the episodes are so AT like that if Steven dressed up as a yellow dog I would probably think it was AT
I'm asking you to explain how the fuck you could ever think that and all you do is say "It's on the same channel as Adventure Time" I mean what the fuck, are you reading what you're writing at all.
Nah. It's not even that highly rated. There's just an couple of people who feel like shitting up every single thread.
>The show has no laugh out loud moments at all
I disagree. Just last episode I laughed at 6 jokes and that was a pretty middle of the road episode. Tiger Millionaire I'd say is the flat out funniest episode.
Humor isn't it's only focus but it tells jokes worth telling. It does character drama leagues better than other shows right now where the only 2 stories anyone seems to be able to tell is who wants to bone who and the 2 "bros" fight and then make up at the end of the episode.
Atmosphere is what really sells the show though. Very traditional animation combined with a nice to look at painted world look, plus a unique soundtrack for every episode.
>Humor isn't it's only focus
Unlike some other shows I can name.
Like you mentioned, this isn't to say that the show can't be funny; to the contrary. But I REALLY appreciate how cheap gag humor isn't Steven Universe's focus.
show itself is okay, slightly above average
I love this girl though
>it's not interesting unless someone's getting beaten up or yelling about how they're going to beat someone up
I want anime fags to stop watching American cartoons and leave
why did they change the designs from the pilot
the new designs dont do shit for my dick
haven't watched it since episode one
pissed off by all the shitty design changes from the pilot
I couldn't get over the ugliness of the character designs, and that prevented me from trying hard to get into it. What I watched was alright, though. Yes I'm shallow.
It's not overrated since there isn't an enormous fanbase here. It's rated just about correctly.
I don't think Gems do reproduce, naturally anyway. They're essentially immortal and can regenerate from grievous bodily harm given enough time. I've been thinking that since the gems are clearly aliens that each one is a manifestation of some sort of planet protector spirit and only move on once their world no longer needs them or something. Rose had Steven as a way of getting the other Gems to better bond with humanity since they showed little concern for the people of earth outside of their gem duties.
Huh, that's what the doctor said about you when you were born. In fact, you were so repulsive, he had to slap your mother.
>go to comic shop
>realized what i was about to ask
>try to browes and find it on my own
>took long time
>he help me, "just browsing...comics...just..idk spiderman and batman"
>actually informative of current arc and stories
>ending up getting punisher and spider-man with shocker.
I didn't ask, i found Bravest Warrior comic and other CN stuff, it wasn't there..
I think it will be up in next rotation, he said every Wednesday is new comics on the wall..
>put my name next to Steven Universe in the previews book at my LCS
>He only gets one copy
>I was the only one to ask for it
>Someone asks for it before I come in
>Says no, since he only ordered one for me
I love having a based LCS guy. He legit gives a shit about all his customers and I think that's the best.
But doesn't it seem like Rose might have had a plan? Out of all the Gems they hint that she interacted with people and she had her own little base away from the temple. She built multiple light cannons and the other Gems never knew how to even use the one they knew about. It looks like Greg was at fault but that's only because Rose couldn't explain that the others needed to learn to care about humanity.
Well he wasn't really "At fault" but he says Rose gave up her own life to create Steven. I just figure if there's any reason for the Gems to resent Greg, it's because he helped her do that.
Yeah, but I don't think she told him either and if anything I think that made him hate himself even more than the Gems might dislike him. Think about it, Rose was the best thing in his life and the loss of her made a man already struggling pretty much shut down. He keeps the picture he has of her in storage where he doesn't have to look at it and be filled with guilt constantly. He can only keep it together for Steven because he doesn't have to deal with the stress of raising him full time. He certainly tries, if what Steven reveals about him in So Many Birthdays is any indication, but in the end I think he punishes himself by remaining a sort of dead beat.
Dude, whatever you're smoking, you might want to quit.
Anime has been lewd shit and best girls for years now, there are very few classic action animus and one of them is close to ending.
Dammit, I do hope Hunter x Hunter doesn't just end and they decide to just wait to animate each arc separately, like what they're doing with Black Buttler.
pic related in case there are people who haven't seen utena
>Google utena + pearl
I don't know what i expected.
I think it might be based on the concept of them being protectors, kind of like Earth Mothers of other worlds or some Goddess thing. All the depictions in the pyramid episode seemed to be feminine.
I got all the issues out of ANGR and as I was leaving in the KIDS section I saw a variant cover for issue one. So as I was checking out I rushed away from the pretty cute girl working the counter to get this pastel coloured children's comic and I was like PLEASE ADD THIS TO MY ORDER. Thank god she just smiled nicely and added it or I would feel really dumb right now.
You're not their demographic. A kid acting like a kid is fine for other kids. So it's annoying to you, fine, that's a valid complaint, but it's stupid to call him retarded because he's appealing to the actual audience.
to some extent, she sees Rose in him...Steven does have her gem.
I cant remember just how high all the gems think of Rose, but it's possible that Pearl really REALLY looked up to her from them all for whatever reason and Steven's well being might be Rose's final will. Rose gave up her physical form so Steven could be born after all.
And Steven's birth might be Rose's way to make Greg happy and in some twisted way Rose's 'dead' is Greg's fault, so that could be the reason why the gems think he's a mess and shit but then again they do love Steven and HOLY SHIT.
I went in wanting to like it, since I liked Rebecca Sugar's influence on AT. But after a few episodes, it just felt like a whole lot of nothing. The concept didn't hook me and the worldbuilding is whatever, and if those are the main draws... I mean, it's inoffensive and pleasant, but it doesn't leave me wondering what happens next.
She definitely seemed to be the leader from how the others talk about her, or at least was very powerful considering she built the laser light cannon.
I don't think Rose had Steven to make Greg happy, but she knew he wouldn't abandon Steven. I mentioned some ideas last night >>64402179
The crystal gems were pretty obviously getting a hard carry from Rose Quartz. I mean look how much Steven contributes even without powers. They're really just not very good at this. Except Garnet. Garnet's pretty legit.
uuuugh. you can't just do that with songs.
Well the japanese cast all sound like they're in their 30s so it evens out
>Seeing a generation as shit
>Not looking at the positives such as SU
Hey, I am a 90's kid and even though I dislike this generation sometimes, there are good qualities as well.
Always look for a pearl in the mud my friend.
He's got no style
He's got no grace
He's banal and facile
He's a fat waste of space
See his pug nosed face
