I think you guys overrate the consistency of Watterson's work. There are many, many strips in the C&H history that are either the weaker variations on the same theme --which a non-daily cartoonist would generally not publish-- or recurring standbys like the dozens of strips where the joke is that Calvin gets mauled.

Idk I grew up reading Bloom County and even though the political/pop culture references flew over my head, I was still drawn to the weird funny little world that Berke Breathed had created.

I wonder why Calvin never played videogames. The comic took place in those decades, and it might have made a fun story arc for him to have gotten a video game system but get bored with it or something.

Sure, the jokes may have ended up a lot like the TV jokes, or the modern gaming webcomic, but it's not something that you'd have seen often then.
