Pilkey was clearly in a bad place when he was finishing the series and it shows pretty heavily.
That said, despite really doing nothing with Krupp, having one set of the kids still going on madcap adventures and the other set settling down and going 'hey, let's do something new' was a pretty sweet ending in that sense.Edith is fucking adorable

The only shitty writing was at the finale. All that build up and hints saying Jack would stay in the future to undo Aku's evil was just tossed to the wayside for a shitty Gurren Lagann ending that left a bad taste in pretty much everyone's mouths, both shipfags and haters alike.

It did a pretty decent job, at balancing them, honestly. The wacky stuff was never really considered game changing of a fixture in their lives, if that makes sense. It was a normal family that some weird things happened to every now and then.

Crisis worked thematically as a comics- exclusive thing, really. You could have Barry sacrifice himself, but it doesn't have the context of years of history and iconography, and how it symbolizes the Silver Age's closure. A big part of Crisis too was seeing these characters for what could be the last time.
It'd have the same impact as TDKR elements in BvS did to a lesser degree as it probably wouldn't be as poorly directed.
