To kill The Batman, Light would need to know his full name and see his full face. Normally, Batman would not have a problem here - but we are talking about Light Yagami, who is playing 4th dimensional chess in a world where everyone else is playing that giant checkers game at the Cracker Barrel. Batman might be able to deduce Light's identity faster than L, but Light would be able to deduce Batman's identity just as fast.

No, new characters don't sell. The point is to force collectorfags into supporting the book long enough that the new character becomes known and gains fans so they can get their own book with a new name when the original comes back that won't be an immediate stealth mini. The other method of doing this is seeding a character in a team book first, but no one reads team books either right now.

No one reads books about new characters and comics are a dying medium that can barely support their existing titles as is.

Also, what is the limit of "in your face"? Just having a character who belongs to a minority but not actually having the character encounter any sort of experiences or whatever that are typical for members of that minority seems like you'd just be making them to show people that you totally do have these types of characters but not that you're interested in telling stories that they find relateable.

To use a subculture as an example it would be like having a comic with the first Gamer Superhero (TM) but aside from looking kind of dorky they don't actually talk about or reference games ever.
