What book/issues did this arc take place in?
It's after Smythe's team up with Lady Octopus but before his brief appearances in She Hulk.

Well those first two movies were sold to the female fanbase, and including them probably significantly helped drive Marvel's Avengers to higher grosses, drawing in audiences who would ordinarily have bypassed the Avengers movie as a more juvenile power fantasy for little boys.

It's a clever strategy, but it remains to be seen whether the Thor movies were a big draw because of Portman, because of the more female-fantasy oriented storylines (fixer-upper from outer space, meeting his folks: the movie), because of a combination, or in spite of those things. Because the next one doesn't have any of those things on present appearances, so how the gross responds is going to be educational.

It is of course possible that, having used Thor as an early example of how they could make female-audience-friendly action movies (albeit with a vocal male fanbase who just moaned constantly about them), Marvel has now widened its general audience far enough that all of its movies are considered accessible to all audiences - which raises further interesting questions and possibilities that aren't really worth going in to at this stage. But if that is the case, then it really doesn't matter what they do now, so long as they don't start crapping out shit like Batman v Superman or X-Men Apocalypse.

Shrek 2 even back when I saw it relied too much on references just for the sake of references. Why was there an Alien reference? Why was there a Flashdance reference?

It sounds like Pixar has a bad one on their hands and they know it.

They've been pushing trailers for the Disney Frozen Olaf short that comes before Pixar's Coco. Sad part is, it has a better trailer than Coco itself.

Pulling out Frozen to push this movie is like Plan B. The emergency parachute.
