Are beer battered chips just a meme?

Basically the beer doesn't do too much for the taste, but beer is pretty prime for making a really fucking nice crisp crust on the things you batter with it.

It's not the only batter which can do this, but knowing that it's beer battered is a pretty easy way to tell that the crust will be good.

Probably less important with fries/chips than things which actually gain a decent crust, though.

I can't imagine battered fries being that good but I'd try them.
